What Redditors are Saying

Best Makeup Setting Spray for Oily Skin

TL;DR

  • One/Size On 'Til Dawn: Highly recommended for its strong hold, likened to hairspray [1:7], [2:2], [3:2].
  • Urban Decay De-Slick: Popular choice among those with oily skin [1:2], [2:1].
  • Skindinavia Oil Control: Specifically formulated for oil control [3:5].

Popular Recommendations

Several setting sprays have been frequently mentioned across discussions as effective for oily skin. The One/Size On 'Til Dawn is praised for its ability to keep makeup in place throughout the day, even under challenging conditions [1:7], [2:2]. Urban Decay's De-Slick is another popular choice, known for its oil-controlling properties [1:2], [2:1]. Skindinavia's Oil Control spray is specifically designed for managing oily skin and has been a long-time favorite for many users [3:5].

Additional Tips for Oily Skin

Beyond setting sprays, users have shared additional strategies for managing oily skin. Using a mattifying primer and setting powder can significantly help in controlling oil and keeping makeup intact [1:4], [5:5]. Some recommend using a light layer of setting powder before applying foundation and setting spray [3:1]. Additionally, maintaining a skincare routine that balances oil production without over-drying the skin is crucial [2:1].

Considerations for Sensitive Skin

For those with sensitive or acne-prone skin, choosing a setting spray that doesn't exacerbate these issues is important. The Charlotte Tilbury Airbrush Flawless Setting Spray has been noted for not worsening acne, although it is fragranced, which may be a concern for some [5:6], [5:9]. MAC Fix Plus is also suggested as a gentle option, though it is more hydrating than oil-controlling [3:3].

Product Availability

Many of these products are available at major retailers like Ulta, making them accessible for purchase with discounts or coupons [5:1]. Always consider testing products in-store when possible to ensure compatibility with your skin type and preferences.

Best Setting Spray - Oily Skin

ORIGINAL POST

I’ve had oily skin my entire life and any time I wear foundation, it’s bound to come off just because my skin is so oily no matter what I do. I use both a matifying primer and a foundation that’s absolutely incredible on my oily skin (which I just recently discovered). The only problem is if I even so much as touch my face, the foundation comes off and seeps into my finger prints, which results in me leaving foundation covered fingerprints on everything I touch if I’m not regularly washing it off my hands. This has been an ongoing issue for as long as I can remember no matter what setting spray I used. Obviously I know the easiest answer here is to stop touching my face, but I get chronic sinus headaches and the only relief I ever get is massaging my sinuses.

I currently use the One/Size setting spray (which I thought was going to be amazing) but it literally doesn’t help at all. I touch my face slightly within an hour and I get foundation on my hands. I do also use an elf setting powder but even using both of them can’t stop it.

So please, I’m asking for my oily skinned humans to let me know their favorite setting spray is for oily skin.

I used Urban Decay De-Slick setting spray for the longest time. But I really don’t know of anything that’s going to make your makeup transfer-proof if you’re literally massaging your face. Might just want to think about carrying something for touch-ups.

Sadly this is what I use now and I feel like it doesn’t work on me at all since my foundation immediately transfers off after using it. However I haven’t tried reapplying it throughout the day which might help!

Does your foundation ever set? I'm oily and using a self-setting liquid foundation is the best texture on my skin.

A harder working setting powder (I've heard Huda is good, personally I use the Kosas Cloudset) will be worthwhile. Every few hours ( I go about 4 hours between touch ups ) blot down with a tissue and reapply the powder and setting spray.

Honestly, and it may sound dumb, I never thought of just reapplying a harder working setting powder!

Hey ladies! My skin tends to get oily throughout the day. I am currently using makeup by mario setting spray and I love it but it's not good at oil control. I use a jelly grip hydrating primer and that helps blend my makeup better. Any suggestions to help me out? I also use the Huda setting powder and that helps a tad too.

I tried the Mario setting spray and it’s decent. Probably won’t purchase it again but I do love his setting powder. I have like every single setting powder and always grab Mario. I have huda beauty setting spray (not a fan in general) and her setting spray literally looks like someone spit on your face the way it comes out. She needs to go back to the drawing board on that one. Tried and true is Patrick Starrr ONE/SIZE setting spray. It’s like hair spraying your face but your make up stays and I go back in with Mario powder to really seal it in and keep the shine away.

i loveee the danessa myricks blurring balm as a primer, and de-slick by urban decay for setting spray as a fellow oily girlie! these two tame my oil like its nobody’s business. also, skin prep is super important beforehand. if i know im gonna be out all day with a full face i also use the laroche-posay effaclar mask followed by a cerave oil control moisturizer😋 i make sure not to completely dry out my skin since this can have an opposite effect (if your skin is dry, it’ll compensate by releasing more oil to hydrate itself) but this routine has worked so good for me!

This has been driving me insane, everyone has different answers, I have acne-prone, oily, and sensitive skin, so I’m extremely careful with makeup in general, I can’t find anything for myself, and it’s been extremely depressing not having any makeup suit my skin.

Skindinavia oil control has been my HG for years! They make UD setting sprays but you can get an 8oz with a code for about the same as a 4oz UD. I specifically use the oil control and it works great. They usually have a deal where you get 2 travel sprays to try of their other formulas too

i also have acne prone oily skin and i’ve struggled with looking like a ball of grease for awhile😞 it was also the worst when i used foundations like the new huda one BUT ive found a way to fix it and make it look nice!

after my skincare i use a light layer of setting powder, followed by setting spray, and after that dries the porefessional primer from benefit! i do my regular makeup routine and then use whatever setting spray i have on me! i’ve never had a problem with longevity but this has really helped me maintain a more natural finish to my makeup!!

anyways, that’s just something that’s helped me. if you’re looking for a nice matte setting spray the one size is very long lasting, i wore a full face of makeup to disney world in florida and my makeup stayed on all day! the l’oréal infallible setting spray is nice too and is about twenty dollars cheaper i believe, so i prefer that for everyday wear. the milani setting spray is nice too!!

A little tip to get the most effective use from this would be to do a spray layer after everything on your face is done except your mascara. Do a setting spray before your mascara. AND THEN do a light layer once your mascara is on.

I found that it stops my mascara from accidentally running/smudgey from the spray, and then also acts as almost a primer on my "naked" lashes. ZEROOOO crumbly or flaking under my eyes with this method, which would sometimes become a problem with my oily skin plus heat.

I think you're going to love it!

I use Skindinavia (bridal) and in 2 layers. After base then as a final seal.

For base, either Danessa Myrics blurring balm or Neat 3B Face antiperspirant gel.

I’m in a tropical country so you can guess how hot and humid things are.

I use Danessa Myricks balm in a lighter shade as concealer bc of how well it works to help lock things in place with even Saie Slip Tint being so dewy & having hot flashes as part of my PMS. Upsalite is so nice 💕

2 upvotes on reddit
adventureremily · 2 years ago

When I need things to be damn near waterproof: Mehron barrier spray under the foundation, PPI Blue Marble SELR on top. Locks things down, but can be irritating to sensitive skin and not ideal for daily use (very drying).

Day to day: start with a good moisturizer and let it dry down, then a primer and foundation with the same base (i.e., silicone with silicone, water with water), then NYX Matte Finish setting spray. I don't use powder if I can help it as I find it tends to over-dry my skin and cause even more oil later.

In the worst parts of summer, I'll use a face antiperspirant underneath everything too.

I normally use Morphe (and recently tried Fix+) but I feel like I need something better because by the end of the day my face is so shiny. I don’t love a totally matte look but I know I’ll be shiny at some point throughout the day. Does anyone with oily skin have a recommendation?

If you aren't using a setting powder, like the other commenter said, it's super helpful in controlling oil.

I haven't used the Morphe setting spray, but MAC Fix+ imo is more of a hydrating spray than a setting spray, especially if you're looking to control oil. I use it when I'm looking too dry/powdery and matte.

My favorite setting spray is the one from Charlotte Tilbury, but other sprays to consider:

Urban Decay All Nighter (I didn't like it so much but others swear by it)

One Size on til dawn setting spray (haven't tried it but I've heard others rave about it)

For something available only at Ulta, their Wannabe Free Setting Spray (the original one, not the matte or SPF one) isn't half bad. It's alcohol free, fragrance free, relatively budget friendly ($12), and it does a fairly good job. Not quite as good as Charlotte Tilbury, but it's close. You can also consider drugstore options like Milani Make it Last and Maybelline Lasting Fix; I've heard others say they're good.

I currently use a setting powder from Colourpop! Not my fave but just want to get my money’s worth.

I’ve tried the One Size but it’s SO dry, it almost feels like a hairspray. I like when setting spray is wet so I can feel it if that makes sense. I will look into your recommendations, thank you so much!

p.s. I didn’t know that about Fix+! good to know

1 upvotes on reddit

BestBoyDonny · 2 years ago

It totally makes sense; I like those kinds of setting sprays too! The Charlotte Tilbury setting spray definitely feels wet when applying, as does the Ulta brand setting spray. If I recall correctly, the UD setting spray is also wet feeling but it's been years since I used it.

Some people do use Fix+ to set, but for my oily skin, it does absolutely nothing other than add some mild hydration and "melt" products onto my skin so they don't look so dry. The CT setting spray gives a similar effect but it actually sets my makeup.

Do you think the CT is okay for acne prone skin?

1 upvotes on reddit
B
BestBoyDonny · 2 years ago

I'm super prone to acne (I have hormonal acne and my skin is easily clogged and irritated, which results in even more acne) and CT setting spray doesn't make it worse or anything. I've gone through about 5 bottles. I'd only stay away if your skin is sensitive to fragrance since it is super fragranced.

I would take a look at your skincare..if not dehydrated, then your base. I have oily skin and i stopped using setting spray because i found out it's skincare and primer or pre setting with powder. My favorite is the fenty invisimatte powder. Buut if you still want that spray, i suggest Nyx or Skindinavia.

My take is that controlling shine is just not what setting spray is meant to do. Its job is to keep your makeup from breaking apart when your skin gets oily.

Some way to keep your makeup from getting too shiny without making it totally matte at the start include:

  • Powder underneath foundation and setting spray over
  • Mix a little bit of liquid highlighter into a very matte foundation, topped by setting spray

Setting sprays for oily skin?

Posted by violetx38 · in r/MakeupAddiction · 2 years ago

I’m looking for a setting spray that won’t irritate my skin and makes my makeup last on my combination skin. My skin is pretty dry after cleansing, but starts to get oily in my t zone after a few hours, and by the end of the day I feel like my makeup is sliding off my face. I like the urban decay all nighter, but it gives me a rash on my neck and around my eyes. Any suggestions are much appreciated!!

Benefit the porefessional super setter spray leaves a nice matte / pore blurring finish and has a super light feeling on the skin. It’s a true mist, not a heavy spray like some setting sprays so good for sensitive skin imo. It’s my favorite setting spray I’ve tried. I’ve used NYX matte finish spray too and liked that one as well for a less pricey option.

UD De-Slick is my spray of choice.

1 upvotes on reddit
PurpleSolitudes · 2 years ago

I would recommend trying the NYX Professional Makeup Matte Finish Setting Spray. This setting spray is formulated with a shine-stopping matte finish that helps to control oil, while also keeping your makeup in place for up to 8 hours.

Another option to consider is the Skindinavia The Makeup Finishing Spray Oil Control. This setting spray is specifically designed for oily skin and helps to reduce shine and keep your makeup in place for up to 16 hours. It also contains a unique oil-control complex that helps to reduce the appearance of pores.

If you have sensitive skin and are prone to rashes, try the Milani Make It Last Setting Spray Prime + Correct + Set. This spray has a lightweight formula that is gentle on the skin, and it also helps to control oil and keep your makeup in place for up to 16 hours. Additionally, it's infused with vitamins B, E, and arctium majus root to help soothe skin and minimize irritation.

Best setting spray for oily skin?

Posted by tuesdayshirt · in r/MakeupAddiction · 6 years ago

I got soooo tired of my makeup fading away during the work day that I decided to finally try a setting spray. I read some reviews online and went with Milani Make it Last Charcoal Matte spray; it had a lot of good reviews and honestly it pains me to spend over $13, so there was no way I was going with Urban Decay’s spray.

Anyway, fast forward a week and I’m breaking out. I don’t want it to be the spray (maybe I’m just getting close to my period?), but if it is I’d like some options on other good, low-cost sprays for oily, acne-prone skin.

I have the same problem as you. I bought the UD de slick mini spray and haven't found it to help me. It's been 15 days of uses and I haven't noticed a difference. But I haven't broken out and I'm suppose to get my period in a day or so. Also my makeup uses might affect it's performance? I also wear light makeup- concealer, eyes stuff, contour, blush, etc. But no foundation. (Love my freckles to much to cover them up)

Anyways,I'll by trying some of the suggestions in the comments. Thanks for asking the question for me

I am oily and found Milani's spray to be better than UD's De-Slick, believe it or not. De Slick certainly works, but Milani's provided the same effect of "melting" my powder and giving my makeup some more lasting power but for 1/3 the price.

Another drug-store option I really like it JOAH Beauty's setting spray. It's sold only at CVS. I think it's about the same price (maybe $1-2 cheaper) than the Milani spray though I do believe it's a larger size (I'm not at home otherwise I'd confirm since I have both in my makeup bag).

Also, I know it sounds counter-intuitive but you might want to give the original Milani spray (the one in the see-through bottle) a try instead of the matte one. I have tried quite a few setting sprays, high end and drug-store, and the "normal skin" or "dewy" setting sprays actually work better for me, despite the fact that my face produces enough oil to power a car that runs on alternative fuel. When I try to fight my face and suck moisture from it using a ton of matte products and blotting sheets, my foundation seems to wear off much faster and look patchier at the end of the day.

Thanks! If I keep having issues with the charcoal spray I'll try the original a try -- it does sound counter intuitive, but if it works it works!

Absolutely! I LOVE the NYX Angel Veil Primer! It's smoothing and keeps my oils in check. Unfortunately it's so expensive now! I also really like the Elf Putty Primer. I've never combined setting sprays but I do combine primers. I use a small amount of Putty Primer as the pothole filler only on areas with really big pores like my nose and cheeks. I let that sink in and when that's set, I apply the NYX over it as an overall smoother and that's worked really well for me. I also like to do a very light spray of setting spray on my primer and then I apply my bb cream/foundation etc. I feel like sealing every layer with a light spritz of setting spray works wonders.

You probably already know this but be sure to double cleanse and exfoliate so that your pores don't get clogged up. I do a chemical exfoliation every 1.5 to 2 weeks and a gentle physical exfoliation once a week. It depends on your skin type but make sure your skincare is works for your because that makes a huge difference. I hope any of this helps 😊

Not from Ulta, but I'll share anyway just in case!

I use KimChi Chic Stage Proof Matte setting spray, and I love it! Nice sprayer, not stinky, SETS, and keeps the oil down. It's $16 on their website.

Ulta is doing their 21 days of beauty and the MAC setting spray will be half off. Check the ad for the specific date it will be on sale. Sorry I don’t know the date off the top of my head!

Other than the MAC setting spray, I’ve had good luck with the PIXI makeup setting spray. You can find it at target and Ulta. And if you get it from Ulta you can use their usual $3.50 off coupon.

Hope that helps!

Milani or Nyx have really nice matte sprays. Elf is okay but it stinks 🤢. I will say though definitely check for price per oz. A lot of drugstore sprays are much smaller.

Agree, I like the nyx matte spray. They have a mini for $4 that you can test out first

Seconding this! I've tried Urban Decay All Nighter, Milani Make it Last (the regular/original, not matte), NYX Matte setting spray, MAC Fix+, and I'm sure a couple others but the Makeup Revolution Sport Fix is my favorite! It lasts all day and my oils barely shine through. The others I listed left me feeling oilier than I liked by the end of the day.

Hiya! Makeup artist here, my favs to use are the Urban Decay All Nighter, and MAC fix+. I've heard good things about the Morpe one but I haven't used it myself. But it seems like the issues you're describing with your makeup aren't something that can be solved by just a setting spray. :)

If you think about it, spraying a setting spray over the top of your makeup will definitely help to melt any products together ON TOP of your skin, but it's not going to do anything to help it actually stick to your skin underneath.

Usually makeup breaks up through the day due to oils coming through from your skin, underneath your makeup. This is why using a good primer is so much more effective than just a setting spray when it comes to the longevity of your makeup. (some of my favs are the maybelline fit me primers, milk hydro grip, and ELF putty primers.

I love using setting spray after I've done liquid foundation and concealer, and then I let it dry for a few minutes before powdering lightly over the top. I find I use less setting powder when I do this, and the makeup looks smooth and lasts all day.

Hope this helps!

This is so insightful! Is any of those good on dry skin? Been avoiding setting sprays in fear they might dry me out too much

Look for anything that says "dewy" or "hydrating" on the bottle :) MAC Fix+ is very hydrating but lightweight. Makeup Revolution sells one called "hyaluronic fix" that's a lot cheaper but a good alternative!

Agreed with the Urban Decay one (it’s my favourite) and the Mac fix +

The youtuber/influencer NikkieTutorials came out with a skin care/makeup prep line and I'm IN LOVE with her primer! It's called Where it All Starts Cream. It does magic!! Not only does it make my base look flawless when I apply it, even after 12 hours of wear, I have very little movement - and that's after spending that 12 hours in Disneyland in early fall (so still 85+ degrees) lol Highly recommended giving it a try!!

Also here to promote Urban Decay All Nighter. You can seriously sleep in your makeup & wake up looking pretty much the same as the night before. (Obviously sleeping in your makeup isn’t the best, but I’m JS it’s amazing.)

Nothing beats the morphe mist imo!! It takes away the powderiness yet helps my face stay set all night!

Agree with the Morphe one. Plus it’s a continuous mist so it’s not as jarring to put on like other sprays!

I like the Urban Decay sprays, they're a little pricey but good. The NYX matte setting spray is good too, at a lower price point. I've also heard great things about the Morphe one, but personally the scent gives me a headache so I don't use it.

I actually picked up the NYC matte a few weeks ago (I had ran out of my usual All nighter) and I just went into Walmart. I love it and have been using it ever since! Can't beat the lower price point either!

*It's cheaper if you get the bigger bottle on Amazon. I haven't been able to find the larger bottle in stores.

"Designer" brand - Urban Decay All Nighter Setting Spray

  • Went into a hot tub in the rain with a full face of makeup & it didn't move!

  • Spilt coffee on my face while trying to drink it and my makeup still looked flawless.

"Drugstore" brand - NYX matte finishing spray.

  • I haven't had the same situations to test it but it seems to be just as good!

best makeup setting spray for oily skin

Key Considerations for Choosing a Makeup Setting Spray for Oily Skin:

  1. Oil Control: Look for sprays specifically formulated to control oil and shine. Ingredients like witch hazel, salicylic acid, or mattifying agents can help keep your skin looking fresh.

  2. Long-Lasting Formula: Choose a setting spray that promises long-lasting wear, ideally 8-16 hours, to ensure your makeup stays in place throughout the day.

  3. Finish: Opt for a matte finish to help reduce shine, as opposed to dewy finishes which may not be suitable for oily skin.

  4. Skin Type Compatibility: Ensure the product is non-comedogenic (won't clog pores) and suitable for oily or combination skin types.

  5. Hydration: While controlling oil, it’s also beneficial to have a spray that hydrates without adding excess moisture, helping to balance your skin.

Recommendations:

  • Urban Decay All Nighter Setting Spray: This is a cult favorite known for its long-lasting hold and oil control. It helps keep makeup in place for up to 16 hours and has a matte finish.

  • NYX Matte Finish Setting Spray: A budget-friendly option that effectively controls shine and keeps makeup looking fresh without breaking the bank.

  • Make Up For Ever Mist & Fix: This spray provides a matte finish while also being hydrating, making it a great option for oily skin that still needs some moisture.

Choosing any of these options can help ensure your makeup stays put and looks great throughout the day, even with oily skin.
