TL;DR
Urban Decay All Nighter
The Urban Decay All Nighter setting spray is frequently recommended across discussions for its ability to keep makeup intact for extended periods. Users have praised it for lasting up to 14 hours and maintaining makeup even under masks [1:7]. It's also noted for being versatile enough to use as a primer, which can help with oily skin
[3:3].
Charlotte Tilbury Airbrush Flawless
Another highly recommended product is the Charlotte Tilbury Airbrush Flawless setting spray. Many users consider it their go-to due to its effectiveness in keeping makeup from smudging or transferring, even when wearing masks or hugging others [1:1]
[3:4]. It’s described as "bulletproof" by some, indicating its strong staying power
[1:4].
Ben Nye Final Seal
Ben Nye Final Seal is highlighted for its robust performance, especially in challenging conditions like underwater photography or hot stage lighting [1:8]
[4:4]. It's alcohol-based, so caution is advised to avoid irritation, but it's known for providing a durable barrier against sweat and movement
[4:10].
Additional Tips and Alternatives
Some users suggest using setting sprays in combination with other techniques, such as applying a light layer of translucent powder before and after makeup application to enhance longevity [1:6]. Other alternatives mentioned include Milani Make It Last for an affordable option that performs well
[2:1], and Mehron Barrier Spray, which is similar to Ben Nye's offering
[4:9].
Considerations for Sensitive Skin
For those with sensitive or dry skin, options like Morphe's setting spray are suggested, particularly for its dual use as a primer and setting spray [5:1]. However, users should always patch test new products to ensure they do not cause irritation.
i’m tryna find a really good setting spray that will hold my makeup for shifts at work while wearing a mask LOOL. today i wore the morphe continuous setting mist and for the most part is good but i want something better.
Urban Decay All Nighter and Charlotte Tilbury Airbrush Flawless are my go to setting sprays. Best practice, go in with your spray after putting on foundation/concealer, and one more time at the end of your makeup application (I do my final spritz before applying mascara, which is my last step).
omg thank u!! i’ve heard really good things abt the charlotte tilbury spray but wasn’t sure if it was worth the hype, ty again!
I love the CT one as well. The only setting spray that works for me
Definitely worth it. In my opinion it’s about as bullet proof as a setting spray can be, and I wear a mask all day every day at work.
Charlotte Tilbury and Milk Makeup are the only mask proof setting sprays I've discovered.
I hear the Ben Nye Final Seal is supposed to be bullet proof.
I used this for my underwater photography. Makeup didn't budge.
As is Krylon's. It makes sense since both brands have theater makeup. Hell, Krylon makes spray paint.
can confirm, I did summer marching band (DCI) for 5 years and it lasted for shows in the southern humid heat! came here to recommend :)
As others have recommended, the Urban Decay All Nighter setting spray but also the technique of putting on a light layer of translucent powder and then setting spray before you put your makeup on, then put all your makeup on and then set again with the spray. Lasts longer due to the base layer being able to hold any excess oil from your face.
Definitely Urban Decay All Nighter. That stuff keeps my makeup on 14 hours later. Not sure what’s in it maybe magic. But it’s hands down the BEST.
Ben Nye! Your makeup will not budge and it doesn’t feel gross either.
Does anyone know of a makeup setting spray that actually works? Even if I use waterproof eye liner and mascara it always melts and flakes.
I use the black elf one. Just as good as or better than the urban decay.
I also use tubing mascara as it never runs even when my old waterproof mascara did.
I use Urban Decay All Nighter. Seems to work well for me.
I swear by Milani Setting Spray
Works great as a primer too
Co-signing this, works just as well as the expensive brands!
Yeah I never looked back. I can be in the wind, have allergies, sneeze a ton and sweat and my wings stay!
Charlotte Tilbury
One/Size
My makeup always smudges and goes on everything I touch! help! Right now, I'm using Nyx Long lasting matte spray and, for example, when I talk on the phone, my case in covered in foundation after. Is there a spray that will really keep things in place or am I doing something wrong or expecting too much of a setting spray?
Charlotte Tilbury setting spray is my holy grail. Urban decay all nighter is my lower priced alternative.
alright, so ill start off with UD than lol thank you!
Do you have oily, dry, normal or combination skin ? It can also helps us to know what advice to give.
Do you use liquid, stick or powder foundation ? Do you use powder after applying moist products to "lock" them ? Do you use primer for the foundation, and the eyeshadows ? Primers really helps for eyeshadows for my oily lids. For the mascara, do you use waterproof or not ? (I don't use waterproof, and my mascara tends to smudge a little bit at the top, under my eyebrows thanks to my hooded eyes, but I really like my mascara, and it doesn"t exists in waterproof).
I have oily skin (now more combination thanks to skincare), but I user UD All Nighter BEFORE putting on make-up (following Robert Welsh advice on how to prep oily skin for make-up), and I use it also after.
I think I have kind of oily skin. I've never used a primer. Ive always used liquid foundation and set with a powder. I don't use water proof either, but I don't usually have any issues there. Just with my foundation (and sometimes my liner). I just want to be able answer my phone without it being the same color as my face after lmao So you putting the setting spray FIRST? Before anything else, like a primer?
Yes and no. I use it before primer to lock sebum from my oily skin. If you don't have oily skin, it's not a useful tip.
But, yes, you should try a setting spray, the classic OG is the UD All Nighter, I think you can find it in mini, or in holiday pack if you don't want to invest in a full size one.
It can also depends if you're living in a hot country, dry, humid, etc. And, it can also be a reaction between your skincare product and your foundation. Your skincare can break-up your foundation too.
Yeah, it's a nightmare to find the right stuff ! I hope you'll find a solution to your problem !
Agree that Charlotte Tilbury has the best one. I’ve tried a bunch and no other comes close.
urban decay all nighter or the milani make it last
Thank you I'll try them out

i'm so tired of my makeup smudging on my friends' and bf's shirts when we hug, it's so embarrassing 😭 affordable to mid range ones please
edit: thank you sm for the suggestions! 🤍💗
Setting spray isn’t going to stop this…that’s not what it’s for. You will need to start by using a lighter hand when you apply your makeup and/or setting with powder first.
Setting spray isn’t going to save you from makeup transfer if your makeup is on too thick or you have not set it with powder if the makeup is dewy. Setting spray works best when you’ve found the right amount of makeup and setting powder first. It’s intent is to preserve makeup not make it transfer proof.
this! since dialing back my foundation & getting some more “transfer proof” products, only then did setting spray work lol
I’ve never used a setting powder before. What’s a good one? And does it go under or on top of the setting spray?
My personal all time fave is the Coty Airspun! (yes it has a perfumey scent but that goes away basically immediately)
I usually do tinted moisturizer (instead of foundation), concealer, cream contour, then setting powder, then bronzer and blush and then setting spray (Urban Decay All Nighter).
Ben Nye Final Seal. No other setting spray has ever worked for me, but this. I hear it's what funeral homes use on bodies. It's alcohol-based, so make sure you don't have any open cuts and keep your eyes firmly shut when you spray.
This! Aka Barrier Spray. I wear it over face paint and go out to sweaty concerts and it stays SUPER well!
This. Mehron Barrier Spray is similar if unable to find Final Seal. Although the Mehron isn't as fine of a mist.
Omg I was literally thinking this was referring to Mehron. Mehron barrier spray is what I use.
Came here to bring this one up. It was literally designed so that you can dance and sweat under hot stage lighting and not have your makeup run. It works especially well if you put it on after all your cream products, dry it with a fan, then put on your setting powder and powder products. Nothing is moving on your face.
This worked for me best! I tried the travel size first and liked this better than Morphe setting spray. I will be purchasing full size.
Yep. I live in a hot, humid climate and use this every time I wear makeup.
I have dry skin but it's pretty under control however my skin is pretty sensitive. I neeeed something that is super waterproof so that I could be in the water.
UD all nighter setting spray
onesize
i have eczema on my eyes and my holy grail of keeping face products on is the morphe setting spray. oldie but a goodie, especially the one in the gold bottle because it can also be used as a primer spray. you spray your face down almost every other step, set with your powder (as a dry skin girlie powder is not your enemy half the time) and your makeup will not budge.
This year is probably gonna be the first school year where I wear concealer or a foundation to school to cover up my acne but I don't want it to be cakey or anything, and i just want it to stay in place and not get it on my clothes or anything, which setting spray would be best for this
NYX is good for a drugstore setting spray.
Going to try it(black bottle one) instead of jumping right into Charlotte Tilbery, but haven’t ever used any! Watched that transfer proof is great. My aging skin that has changed subtly since I reached 40(now 44) is now drier & have had to get great moisture regimen care that I researched a ton. & I’ve been advised by my daughter and younger adults that I need to get with the times on the dewy glow, non cakey regimens just by asking them questions then where they get their glowy foundation, liquid blush, light setting powders, etc 😂
I’m 58 and I use setting spray! NYX and/or Urban Decay and mmmmy skin is dry!
Best drugstore setting spray?
This is a good Setting Spray Combination as many has said.
NYX PROFESSIONAL MAKEUP Marshmellow Smoothing Primer + Makeup Setting Spray, Matte Finish
Was going to say this. Either the matte or the dewy finish are both fine. :)
is it scented?
I've been using the NYX setting spray for months now. It primes and refreshes your makeup. I've tried a bunch of different brands, but this one keeps my makeup looking fresh all day without feeling sticky or heavy. Plus, it's super hydrating, thanks to the aloe and cucumber extracts. For the price, you really can't beat it. Every time I use it, my skin just looks dewy and vibrant.
I like the Milani. I have the make it dewy and the sunscreen version. Both work well for my acne prone oily skin
I like the Milani one. I prefer the dewy finish but they also have a sunscreen and matte one.
Another vote for NYX matte finish setting spray and it's on sale right now! This is my favorite!
In the past I’ve had All Nighter by Urban Decay, and Hangover by Too Faced, I seem to remember preferring Hangover. But it’s been a while since I had a setting spray and wondered if anyone had any big recommendations?
Makeup Revolution infinite matte setting spray
Charlotte Tilbury Setting Spray
Urban Decay all nighter
As a make up artist, I’m not a big fan of setting sprays but there are ones that work to help make your make up stay on. These are the ones that have alcohol higher up on the ingredient list because it creates a seal on the face and it seals the make up in. The thing that works best if you really need your make up to stay in place is hairspray but I don’t recommend doing that every day because that’s not good for your skin. Lol
PUR Minerals Lit Mist (I believe they have matte version too) is undefeated in my book. And cruelty free!
I like Skindinavia.
Milani Make It Last is legit one of the best setting sprays I've ever used, and it's affordable! It really does a great job of locking your makeup in all day. They have different options for different skin types, too!
all of my setting sprays either move my makeup or they just make me look so oily. does anybody have any recommendations for a spray that’s not too matte but not oily looking? i’m desperate lol i need something to lock in my makeup and make me look glowy but not greasy. please help!!! thank you so much loves💖🤎💕
Nothing beats the morphe mist imo!! It takes away the powderiness yet helps my face stay set all night!
Agree with the Morphe one. Plus it’s a continuous mist so it’s not as jarring to put on like other sprays!
"Designer" brand - Urban Decay All Nighter Setting Spray
Went into a hot tub in the rain with a full face of makeup & it didn't move!
Spilt coffee on my face while trying to drink it and my makeup still looked flawless.
"Drugstore" brand - NYX matte finishing spray.
Hiya! Makeup artist here, my favs to use are the Urban Decay All Nighter, and MAC fix+. I've heard good things about the Morpe one but I haven't used it myself. But it seems like the issues you're describing with your makeup aren't something that can be solved by just a setting spray. :)
If you think about it, spraying a setting spray over the top of your makeup will definitely help to melt any products together ON TOP of your skin, but it's not going to do anything to help it actually stick to your skin underneath.
Usually makeup breaks up through the day due to oils coming through from your skin, underneath your makeup. This is why using a good primer is so much more effective than just a setting spray when it comes to the longevity of your makeup. (some of my favs are the maybelline fit me primers, milk hydro grip, and ELF putty primers.
I love using setting spray after I've done liquid foundation and concealer, and then I let it dry for a few minutes before powdering lightly over the top. I find I use less setting powder when I do this, and the makeup looks smooth and lasts all day.
Hope this helps!
This is so insightful! Is any of those good on dry skin? Been avoiding setting sprays in fear they might dry me out too much
Look for anything that says "dewy" or "hydrating" on the bottle :) MAC Fix+ is very hydrating but lightweight. Makeup Revolution sells one called "hyaluronic fix" that's a lot cheaper but a good alternative!
Agreed with the Urban Decay one (it’s my favourite) and the Mac fix +
The youtuber/influencer NikkieTutorials came out with a skin care/makeup prep line and I'm IN LOVE with her primer! It's called Where it All Starts Cream. It does magic!! Not only does it make my base look flawless when I apply it, even after 12 hours of wear, I have very little movement - and that's after spending that 12 hours in Disneyland in early fall (so still 85+ degrees) lol Highly recommended giving it a try!!
Also here to promote Urban Decay All Nighter. You can seriously sleep in your makeup & wake up looking pretty much the same as the night before. (Obviously sleeping in your makeup isn’t the best, but I’m JS it’s amazing.)
What a super helpful reply! Investing in primer tomorrow.
I like the Urban Decay sprays, they're a little pricey but good. The NYX matte setting spray is good too, at a lower price point. I've also heard great things about the Morphe one, but personally the scent gives me a headache so I don't use it.
NYX matte spray, in a black bottle :)
Just curious to what everyone’s favorite setting spray is, and why? I’ve been using NYX for years but I’m thinking about branching out.
Urban Decay All Nighter. It's worked well for me! Used it for my wedding, too, and I feel like my makeup really lasted.
The urban decay one would burn my eyes so bad because it contains alcohol so I had to stop using it. Any recs for setting sprays without alcohol?
My mom is the same! I've also used the Morphe continuous setting mist - which I believe has no alcohol. That one worked fine for me as well.
This. I put off trying it for so long because it was pricier than drugstore, but one bottle lasts me aaaaaaaages! One of the drugstores where I am sells a 2-pack for just over the normal price of one, and that’ll do me for another year!
This is the ONLY setting spray I've ever tried that actually made a difference for me!
Same. I got through a July outdoor wedding in 95 degree heat with no major meltdowns. Also highly recommend the CoverGirl Outlast Stay All Day primer, I never much like CoverGirl but my mom tried it too, it’s wow.
Milani Make It last
Love the make it last!! The dewy version can make my foundation splotchy because of the oils in it.
The matte one specifically has been great for the summer for me.
Haha I personally liked it from the start! It DOES have alcohol in it, so it's not for everyone. My mom, for example, can't use it because she has dry skin, and it makes her makeup look worse.
Try doing it before you do your makeup
I really love the Morphe Continuous Setting Mist. I wear Estee Lauder Double Wear so don't really need any help with lasting power, so I use setting spray primarily to really melt my base products into my skin and give me a hydration boost. It looks so beautiful with the ELDW and gives me a beautiful, glowy look that I love.
If you’ve got oily or combo skin, you know the struggle—makeup starts sliding by lunch, your T-zone shines like glass, and touch-ups get old real quick. A good mattifying setting spray is the real MVP, and thankfully, you don’t need to drop $30+ to get one that actually works.
After trying a bunch, here are the best drugstore setting sprays I’ve found for keeping shine in check and locking your look for hours:
This one’s a solid staple if you want long wear without the tight, dry feeling. It claims 16-hour hold and actually comes close. The mist is super fine (like, you barely feel it), so it won’t disturb your makeup. What I really like is that it’s alcohol-free and has cucumber and aloe, so it feels cooling and gentle even on sensitive or breakout-prone skin.
If you’re looking for a dupe for Urban Decay’s All Nighter, this is the closest I’ve found. It uses micro-fine charcoal powder to soak up oil and keep your skin looking matte without being flat or cakey. It also holds makeup down like glue, even through heat and sweat. I reach for this one on long days or when I need makeup to last through events or nights out.
This one surprised me! It’s sweat-proof, water-resistant, and legit lasts through a workout or a humid summer day. It dries down quickly and doesn’t feel sticky. I think it’s a great pick if you’re active, going to a festival, or just prone to extra oil production midday. Bonus: it keeps your skin looking fresh without needing blotting papers every hour.
A drugstore OG and still a favorite. This is a straightforward matte setting spray that controls shine, blurs pores a bit, and helps makeup stay put for hours. What I love is its versatility—you can use it before makeup for a little oil control, and again after to lock everything in. It’s lightweight and dependable, especially if you want something no-fuss that just works.
Don’t let the word “dewy” throw you off—it gives more of a soft matte finish that’s ideal if you have an oily T-zone but dry cheeks. It doubles as a primer too, so you can use it before and after makeup. It’s got hyaluronic acid and green tea, so it keeps skin balanced and fresh. Think: glow without grease.
This one is for those who want bulletproof hold. It’s a heavier-duty setting spray that actually rivals high-end ones like the Charlotte Tilbury Airbrush or the UD All Nighter. The finish is matte and almost airbrushed. I wore this through a 90-degree outdoor wedding and my makeup didn’t budge. If you’re after longevity and don’t mind a slightly stronger scent, this one is impressive.
No more melting makeup. Just long-wear glam that lasts all day for under $15. Curious what everyone else swears by—drop your faves below 👇
Thank you!
best waterproof makeup setting spray
Key Considerations for Waterproof Makeup Setting Spray
Waterproof Formula: Ensure the spray is specifically labeled as waterproof or water-resistant to withstand humidity, sweat, and tears.
Longevity: Look for products that claim to extend makeup wear for 12 hours or more, ensuring your look stays intact throughout the day.
Finish: Decide between a matte or dewy finish based on your skin type and desired look. Matte finishes are great for oily skin, while dewy finishes work well for dry skin.
Skin Type Compatibility: Check if the spray is suitable for your skin type (oily, dry, combination) and if it contains any skin-loving ingredients like aloe vera or vitamins.
Application Ease: Consider how easy it is to apply the spray evenly. A fine mist is preferable for a seamless finish.
Recommendations:
Urban Decay All Nighter Setting Spray: This is a cult favorite known for its long-lasting, waterproof formula that keeps makeup in place for up to 16 hours. It has a lightweight feel and works for all skin types.
Make Up For Ever Mist & Fix: This setting spray provides a waterproof finish and is great for both setting makeup and refreshing it throughout the day. It also has a hydrating formula.
NYX Professional Makeup Setting Spray (Matte Finish): A budget-friendly option that offers a matte finish and good staying power, making it suitable for oily skin types.
Choosing any of these options will help ensure your makeup stays flawless, even in challenging conditions!
