TL;DR
Adjustable Bases
An adjustable base is a popular recommendation for those looking to alleviate snoring. Elevating the head can improve breathing posture and potentially reduce snoring [2:1]. Many users have found that an adjustable base with features like anti-snore settings can be beneficial. For example, the Nectar Luxe Hybrid with an adjustable base has been praised for its effectiveness in reducing snoring
[2:2]. Additionally, brands such as Ergomotion and Legget & Platt offer reliable adjustable bases
[2:6].
Mattress Types and Recommendations
Latex and hybrid mattresses are frequently recommended due to their balance of firmness and comfort. Latex mattresses, such as those from Engineered Sleep, provide good support and are often more affordable than other options [1:3]. A full latex mattress or adding a latex topper to an existing mattress can significantly improve comfort and support
[5:3]
[5:5].
Several users also recommend specific brands and models:
Pillow and Mattress Combinations
The combination of a suitable mattress and pillow setup can also affect snoring. Some users have found success with specific pillow arrangements, although this might not be sufficient for everyone [2:3]. It's important to consider both elements together to achieve the best results.
Budget Considerations
While high-end mattresses like Tempur-Pedic can be costly, there are budget-friendly alternatives that do not compromise on quality. For instance, the Nectar Luxe offers a similar feel to more expensive models at a fraction of the price [5:4]. Additionally, purchasing during sales events can help reduce costs while still obtaining a complete setup, including an adjustable base
[5:2].
In summary, addressing snoring through mattress selection involves considering adjustable bases, exploring latex and hybrid options, and balancing budget constraints with desired features.
I have had broken sleep for about 14 months now. Decided a little over a year ago it was time to get a new mattress because mine was developing indents after 6-7 years. What a mistake. I have tried a total of 12 beds and can not make anything work. I'm a side sleeper 6ft about 210lbs. I believe my physique is causing me big issues. My shoulders are around 4-5 inches wider than my hips on each side. If the bed is soft enough for my shoulders, it's destroys my lower back. If it feels good for my back I can't tolerate the shoulders, and I'm not talking just soar and it goes away in the morning. This is lasting pain. My old bed was a beauty rest world class renaissance plush. The only bed on the list below that worked for a bit was the beautyrest silver. However after 3 months it killed my back as it softened up more. I have also tried memory foam toppers on firmer beds, but I just crash through the topper as they don't hold my weight. Please help!!!!!
LIst of beds I have tried
Beautyrest silver plush
DLX hybrid medium
Nolah evolution medium
Helix dusk
Sealy posturepedic Costco medium
Sealy posturepedic pillow top Costco plush and firm
Costco sterns
Lisa legend
Costco purple
Bear hybrid elite soft
Puffy Lux
If I were you I'd look at Serta HOSPITALITY, I did two yrs ago and haven't been disappointed, you wont find the Serta HOSPITALITY mattresses in stores. Only online.
At least take time to call Engineered Sleep. And, read up on the construction of their Latex Duo Plus series. But talk to Davis regarding your issues and they can customize an option for you probably. And, their latex is more affordable than other brands I looked at. Latex is wonderful.
Curious if you have tried an adjustable base with any of these?
I have not, was trying not to have to buy a new bedframe.
How do u afford to continue buying bed after bed????
They are all within return policy. Pretty easy to tell if something will work or not within the trial.
Have you tried Beautyrest Black? Possibly a medium firmness for your weight +side sleeping position?
So I'm a snorer. Fall asleep on my side then roll to my back and saw logs. I've done sleep studies, humidifiers, different pillow setups, taping a ball to my back, etc. No apnea, no stop breathing moments, not overweight.
My wife hates our mattress as it's aged. Currently on a pillow-topped king spring mattress with two divots where we sleep, no matter which direction we orient it.
Looking to kill two birds w/ one stone and see if I can help my snoring while getting a long overdue new mattress.
Budget: would like to keep it to $4k, but will consider more, and will def. go for less
Hot sleepers, but me more so than her. She gets flashes, I just run hot.
I don't think I like memory foam that much, but I'm fine with it and found our old Nectar mattress to be fine, nothing special but didn't hurt me.
And I think we need a split base//mattress just so she doesn't have to elevate.
Just looking for educated recommendations as to what we should start considering.
Thanks.
Nectar luxe hybrid with an adjustable base that has the anti snore setting. I got mine from Mattress Firm. That setting is saving my marriage. 😆
The adjustable base and an elevated sleep position should definitely help with snoring. Have you ever been able to try sleeping in an elevated position to see if it improves your snoring (airplane, car, reclining chair, or propped up on pillows)? Might be worth trying out first to see if it helps your situation. Sleeping elevated does improve breathing posture so I would be surprised if it didn’t help.
As for a mattress, we really like the Nolah Evolution mattress for primary side sleeping. We have the plush version and it feels amazing. It is soft and provides a nice sleep in the mattress feel, remains cool throughout the night, and still provides great support.
Will do. I sleep with one very thin pillow so propping myself up has been hard to do comfortably enough to fall asleep. I’m also a thrasher when I sleep (worst case of life-long RLS in the world) so the pillow fort never stays in tact.
And yes, seated sleeping or sleeping on my stomach eliminates my snoring. I just don’t stay on my stomach once I’m asleep.
I’ll check out the Nolah you recommend.
Sounds good and I think a basic Erogomotion adjustable base would serve you (your wife) well. You can purchase an adjustable base from almost any mattress manufacturer. Ergomotion actually makes a good portion of them. The big players in the space are Ergomotion, Legget & Platt, and Sven & Son.
As far as the adjustable goes, what features do you value? I would assume elevating the head and feet. Anything else? Such as auto snore elevation, massage, lumbar support.
Quite adjustability. Auto detect would be nice, but as long as my wife can either wake me or just adjust it up if I’m snoring once per night I’d be happy. So it’s not a must. As it is now she has to wake me up 3-4 times and it’s screwing with my sleep. Never once have I woken up and felt rested.
We’ve never had a massaging or auto anything mattress in the past so I’m still of the mindset of if I didn’t like the massage recliners of the 90’s I’m not gonna like the massage mattresses of the 2020’s. All seems gimmicky to me and I’m of the mindset of buy once for life; but know mattresses are a wear item, unfortunately.
Completely agree on the massage, so you’d need 2 twinxl head and foot adjustables…
You said she would value cooling with the hot flashes. What position does she sleep in? And is there a firmness you guys are looking for?
Yes to adj bed, even if you dont end up using all of its features its still worth it. Make sure to dont get a garbage memory foam mattress with it as a package. Look for coils+ latex or full latex.
We’re shopping for mattresses right now and husband has really bad fibro with overnight pain. I’m flexible with firm vs. soft. He’s really needing a firm option with the ability to comfortably elevate his upper body, neck, and head.
We’re in the U.S.
What are the best mattresses and pillows you’ve used? Any links you can share?
I swear by the tempur-pedic adapt firm. I had tired four other mattresses in the span of 10 year by the time I finally ponied up and bought it. I still have painsomnia but no where as horrible as it was with the other mattresses! I bought mine from Costco so it was as cheap as it was gonna be, and if you hate it, returns are way easier.
Not sure what tempur pedic I have (it’s in storage while I’m trying to find a place). Friend of mine gave me it, after her husband with MS passed. I couldn’t imagine spending $2k on a mattress, that was until my body slept on it. I’ve had all kinds of memory foam mattresses in my adult life, including the purple non memory foam. The tempur pedic will be the brand I replace mine with when I need to in 10+ yrs, it’s THAT good. I understand tho, it’s not in everyone’s budget, but your body and daily pain is worth it.
We have a Purple mattress. I have fibro and my husband has scoliosis we cannot do mattresses with springs. Somebody recommended this bed to us and we bought it about 5 years ago. It's so comfy, and doesn't cause any pressure points or soreness. Highly recommended.
I have a nectar mattress with adjustable base and casper pillows, and I’ve gotten compliments from everyone all the way down to my cleaning lady.
I'm in Canada I have an Endy mattress money is firm which I need for my back..I've tried so many pillows I currently have a hush pillow but not sure if I l8ke it
I love my Sleep Number. It's expensive even with just the lower-end model because the other models were too soft. I have fibromyalgia and psoriatic arthritis. The thing with me is when I have more joint pain, I want firm because it's my spine and hips, and neck. When it's muscle-like pain, I like a softer mattress. We didn't go with the adjustable base because they didn't have a full king option (if that's possible). They only had a split king. Im eventually going to want an adjustable base cause that "zero gravity" setup on the bed was so comfortable. Didn't have a spare $5k total for a bed so skipped those options, lol.
My big takeaway when I was looking was that I had to try every one to see if I'd be comfortable. I forced myself to try it for 5 minutes or so.
My wife and I are looking for a new mattress. I am desperate to find something that I can get a full, solid nights sleep on. We already do not sleep well (sometimes insomnia for me, wife has back and hip issues) and a good mattress hopefully will help. We are back and side sleepers. We have an almost new Sleep Number and it is really not doing the job; sorry we purchased it. Any suggestions? Thinking we want something durable, soft, plush. Reviewed Consumer Reports and they rate Casper mattresses among the top; never heard of them
I've been sleeping on the Costco Casper cooling 12" foam mattress for a week now and am pleasantly surprised.
Back and side sleepers need different firmness. I’d go with a mattress where you can have one side be soft to medium for side sleeping and med to firm for back sleeping. There are companies that have a zipper on the pillow top so the cushioning can be adjusted. Depending on you and your wife’s weight that will also dictate how a mattress feels to you. Ie plus size people feel mattresses are softer because of the weight versus a very light person will feel a lot of mattresses are hard. I also think the super expensive mattresses are over rated. It’s a business and they try to upsell with a lot of extra “features.” There is such a thing as good quality springs and foam but I think the super high end are over rated. I’ve had so many types over the years. I’d also go with a hybrid or innerspring versus all foam (they sleep hot) if I were you. Also an adjustable base is amazing as well. Just my two cents :) Would love to know what you end up with when you get it.
Good info. Any thoughts on brands to look at?
I have been a side sleeper my whole life until recently. I have a $200 crappy memory foam mattress I bought 13 years ago. It has become so uncomfortable that I have to sleep on my back because it’s too painful to sleep on my side. When I sleep on my back, I snore. Please tell me what mattress to buy. My budget is preferably under 3k, but I will pay whatever it takes to get something really nice.
First and foremost, I’m sorry you’re going through these sleep challenges. We have some crazy sales for Memorial Day including free head up adjustable bases and great discounts off all types of mattresses. You can absolutely get a whole set up for less than 3k. I manage 2 Mattress Firms in Florida and I would love to help you. Let me know if you’d like my contact info.
Sleep on Latex changed my life! https://sleeponlatex.com/
Are you saying the mattress topper? We bought a $3,000 mattress but this thing feels like a brick so far 2.5 weeks in
I have a full latex mattress, but others have said the toppers greatly improve existing mattresses.
agreed. latex is the way to go. I bought a high end mattress and I saved it by putting latex on top of it.
My wife and I almost bought a $4000 TempurPedic but we realized some Nectar offerings feel just as good for way way way less. We got the "Luxe" for around $1500 and we still love it over a year later.
Look into an adjustable frame. There are a lot...I went with a SmartFlex SF50 after a bunch of research. Then pick whatever mattress that will work with it.
An adjustable base would help with your snoring!
What mattress brand is your favorite? Which one of their mattresses? I really don't like my mattress now, and am looking to get a new one. Thank you!
Edit: Looking at cost and quality, I'm thinking maybe a Nectar? Has anyone tried one? Thoughts?
If you are using CPAP treatment, get whatever mattress you are happy with. I'm serious, just make yourself comfortable and don't worry about it.
I would think an adjustable bed frame that lets you tilt the head up (like a hospital bed) would help more with apnea.
If your apnea is adequately treated, any mattress (or even the floor) will do.
I like the low-cost memory foam mattress I bought on Amazon: https://smile.amazon.com/gp/product/B06XC3RC3F/
It's definitely done a lot for my back problems, but a good quality pillow (and CPAP of course) did more for my apnea than the mattress really did.
Yes, we have one of these too and really like it.
Okay, real talk- if sleep was a sport, I’d be going for Olympic gold. 🤪
I genuinely believe sleep is the ultimate superpower. It fixes your mood, your body, your brain… and possibly even your relationship with Monday mornings.
So now, I’m on a mission to find THE BEST MATTRESS out there. Not just “good,” not “budget-friendly,” but sleep-on-a-cloud, dream-like-you’re-in-a-movie, snore-like-a-baby level GOOD.
If your mattress makes you forget your problems (and your alarm), drop the brand name below. Bonus points if it’s so good it makes you cancel Friday night plans just to go to bed early.
Looking for recommendations, please help this sleepy soul! 💤🛌
oh my peeps. I tried wakefit, it is not that good. Tried Sleepwell ortho after that, amazing! Heard sleepy cat is also good but havent tried.
Wakefit
wakefit ain't that good, it's just a chesp option.
Duroflex is good, it has memory foam.
Thanks, will check it out
Go for Duroflex. Bonded foam in between. Soft foam on the outer side.
Sleepwell ortho pro profiled since aug, 7.5 out of 10.
I was just diagnosed with an autoimmune disease and want to treat myself. I spend a solid amount of time in bed already due to health reasons and predict this won’t be changing in the near future moving forward. The only one I’ve really researched is Sleep Number because there’s a brick and mortar store near me and is of course, most popular. I’ve read mixed reviews. I suppose that’s any product though. Sleep Number prices sort of feel like I’m paying for the name vs the actual greatness of the product.
All that to say, I’m open to all options and am curious what brands you guys have tried, loved, and will never return.
Edit to add: looking for an adjustable base option as well.
This post links to an overview of Sleep Number and airbed brands (basically, Sleep Number is questionable because of reliability of parts and expense for repair), as well as a "brands to avoid" post.
If you spend a lot of time in bed, you could look at mattresses with an interchangeable comfort layer. That's the layer that will wear out first and it may be cheaper in the long run to replace the comfort layer as needed instead of the whole mattress. It also allows some flexibility in case your needs change. (I have an autoimmune disease and my weight has fluctuated quite a bit these past few years.) Engineered Sleep and DLX are two well-liked brands that offer this kind of model. I have an Engineered Sleep but not the interchangeable comfort layer model.
If you have the budget, an adjustable base might also be nice. They let you have a sitting up position, and more variety in how your body gets held when you sleep.
Love the idea of an adjustable base option. I’ll check these out. Thank you!
Do you have any recommendations on adjustable bases? I see some on Amazon that are uch more affordable than the ones sold by the mattress companies..... Thanks for all of your helpful posts. I'm sorry you have your illness. I have empathy and appreciation for that.
Personally, I wasn’t a fan of Sleep Number. It felt like I was laying on an air mattress, and I had the i8 which at the time was their second to top of the line.
The other thing I want to mention was that I worked for them, and their mattress warranty isn’t like a typical warranty. You can replace pieces of the bed, like foam inserts, covers, hoses and air pumps. Let’s say the foam insert is bad, it’s lumpy, caved in and isn’t supportive anymore. You would need to order a replacement, and if that replacement is on back order or out of stock, you’re SOL until it comes back in stock. I had a customer of mine who almost every three weeks would come back into the store to cuss us out for updates when we had nothing to do with it. I think it took like two or three months for him to get a replacement foam piece.
Whew, that sucks. Thank you for letting me know.
The brand doesn't necessarily matter, but I always recommend all latex mattresses over any other component, not a hybrid, so no coils, no gel or foam or memory foam of any kind. Latex mattresses last for decades, and you can use them with adjustable beds. Problematically, very few stores carry latex beds to try out, so it's kind of a leap of faith to buy one. They're very easy to research online though.
Sleep EZ latex mattress it allows you to stack layers to create the perfect firmness. And in a king you can split layers for each Individual side like a sleep number bed.
61F, overweight, solo sleeper and I’ve always loved my King Tempur Pedic bed.
I have CRPS that started in my left foot 26 plus years ago. It’s now in both lower extremities. Plus I have moderate to severe arthritis in my spine and hips. I don’t sleep much from the pain but I spend quite a bit of time in bed every day 18 plus hours a day. I share my king size bed with my husband. It’s a Temperpedic we bought 5 plus years ago. We will need it to be king size. We are both side sleepers.
Any suggestions on what mattress we should get and what we should stay away from?
Ugh mattress shopping is SO difficult and confusing. I am in the market for a new one as well. I currently have a Ghost that I really like, but it is due to be replaced. When I bought the mattress I also bought an adjustable frame from Amazon which is a game changer. I do believe that they make split frames for king beds so people can adjust their side.
My time to shine! PURPLE MATTRESS x10. I don’t remember which one I bought but it wasn’t the standard. It was one of the hybrid versions. The beds are extremely more expensive than a general mattress but I say well worth it. It used to take me like an hour when I woke up to get out of bed, I wouldn’t physically be able to move because of my pains, and how bad my back was. The purple mattress helped tremendously and it didn’t like fix everything or cure me, or relieve the pain per se, but my back generally felt better after waking up. I still had all the pains and aches but it was like between being crushed by a boulder and being crushed by something less than a boulder lmao. (Idk how to explain it, but there was a difference)
I think I understand. I was looking at Purple Mattress but that price tag!
Very much so expensive, but well worth the investment. They have a 15yr warranty as well
We had to get 2 twins, because this shitty disease. Splurged on adjustable frames.
I bought a tempr mattress and it was worth every single dollar
Following, since my CRPS spread from my right arm to left glute & leg this past fiscal year…
Hello i'm in the market for a new mattress and wondering if there are any trends and personal experiences for best mattresses for people who practice our sport. im looking for coil spring or hybrid. not 100% memory foam.
for example The brand brooklyn bedding has an athlete specific mattress called the spartan, so i'm wondering if other brands engineered something specific for athletes or some that the triathlon community can recommend. Thanks in advance.
https://brooklynbedding.com/products/brooklyn-spartan-hybrid
I always make sure to buy a bed from Cervello and pillows from Saucony and bedding from Maurten. They know how to get top performance from an athlete.
Seriously though get a mattress that is comfortable for you. I don't think there is one best answer. IMHO you are overthinking it a bit.
Cool thanks.
Stay away from any mattress advertised by influencers on social media. Buy from a reputable brand that's been around and don't be afraid to spend some money. You spend 1/3 of your life asleep and it dictates how you feel the rest of the 2/3.
Just spent a few days sleeping on an 18 year old mattress at my parents house and could barely move my back and neck for a week. I'm also 200-220 lbs and destroy shitty mattresses pretty quick even with frequent rotating and flipping.
Macy's did, and maybe still have some for 70% off and if you're a member/ have cc there's always tons of rewards and coupons on coupons. A lot of mattress companies are also regional so depending on where you are, there's possibly a local company you can support.
Yes I'm not afraid to spend but there are so many options
Just get a good bed and don’t pay extra for marketing bullshit.
Edit : that Spartan bed with waves made for better blood flow is fucking insane. Do you actually consider buying that?
I feel like “Spartan” is the least comfortable way possible to describe a mattress. I clicked the link expecting cardboard on a concrete floor.
Ya Ive never heard of this tech but also sounds like a marketing gimmick. Going to the store tomorrow to test it out
marketing works wonders
Haha I was expecting something along the lines of a water bed, to get used to being on the water or something like that.
LOL - do Ironman not do a mattress ? I know they did a branded shower head. Works well with my IM Tie and pen set. And my IM car mats.
Are you planning on taking your mattress with you to races so you can sleep as normal ?
Just get a normal mattress. Otherwise non athletes won't be allowed into your bed.
Lol ya it's just for myself
Best mattresses for snoring
Key Considerations for Choosing a Mattress for Snoring:
Firmness Level: A medium-firm mattress is often recommended as it provides adequate support for the spine while allowing for some contouring, which can help keep airways open.
Material: Memory foam and latex mattresses can be beneficial as they conform to the body and reduce pressure points, which may help with snoring. Look for options that offer good breathability.
Elevation: Consider a mattress that allows for adjustable elevation or use a wedge pillow to keep the head elevated, which can reduce snoring by keeping airways clear.
Motion Isolation: If you share a bed, look for a mattress with good motion isolation to minimize disturbances from movement, which can help both partners sleep better.
Cooling Features: Snoring can be exacerbated by allergies or discomfort from heat. Look for mattresses with cooling technologies or breathable materials to enhance comfort.
Recommendations:
Purple Mattress: Known for its unique hyper-elastic polymer grid, it offers excellent support and breathability, helping to keep airways open.
Saatva Classic: This hybrid mattress provides a good balance of support and comfort with its coil-on-coil construction, and it comes in different firmness levels to suit various preferences.
Tempur-Pedic TEMPUR-Adapt: This memory foam mattress conforms well to the body, providing pressure relief and support, which can help reduce snoring.
Zinus Green Tea Memory Foam Mattress: A budget-friendly option that offers good support and comfort, with added cooling properties from its green tea infusion.
Choosing the right mattress can significantly impact sleep quality and potentially reduce snoring, so consider your personal preferences and any specific needs when making a decision.
