TL;DR
Gundam Series
The Gundam franchise is a staple in the mecha genre with various series catering to different tastes. "Gundam 00" is praised for its narrative and exploration of transhumanism [4:4], while "Iron Blooded Orphans" is noted for its accessible introduction to Gundam politics
[2:3]. "Gundam Wing" offers a nostalgic experience with its political war story
[2:9].
Neon Genesis Evangelion
Evangelion is often recommended not just as a mecha anime but as a masterpiece that delves into psychological and philosophical themes. It has influenced many viewers and remains a favorite despite its controversial ending [4]
[2:11].
Code Geass
This series stands out for its strategic plot and complex characters, particularly the protagonist Lelouch. It's often compared to other mecha anime due to its unique approach to storytelling and character dynamics [5:1]
[5:2].
Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann
Gurren Lagann is celebrated for its over-the-top action and inspirational message. The series is known for pushing boundaries with its narrative and visual style, making it a must-watch for both mecha fans and general anime enthusiasts [5:5].
Macross Series
The Macross franchise, particularly Macross Plus, is highly regarded for its character-focused storytelling and exceptional music by Yoko Kanno [5:1]
[5:4]. It offers a blend of drama and action that appeals to both mecha and non-mecha fans alike.
Additional Recommendations
Other notable mentions include "Escaflowne" for its unique blend of fantasy and mecha [5:8], "Patlabor" for its grounded approach to mecha
[2:6], and "86" for a modern take on the genre
[2:4]. Each of these series brings something distinct to the table, whether it's through innovative storytelling or captivating visuals.
Currently playing through AC VI and I’m wondering if there’s any series or OVA y’all would recommend.
Thanks
Gurren Lagaan is always a treat. Attack on Titan (yes, it counts as mecha) also draws quite the crowd. I enjoyed Iron Blooded Orphans (Gundam) as well!
Why would AoT count as mecha? It's definitely a great show but I don't see how you could reasonably classify the titans as mecha. 99% of them are essentially mindless.
But the 1% are piloted by over dramatic teenagers. Where they fight each other. And they remain the primary weapon in an ongoing war, piloted or not. Many times in Gundam anime, you're shown rank and file Gundam causing trouble, but we don't always see the pilot. Same general concept. It screams mecha, they're just made of flesh.
That does not even come close to counting as mecha. A series with no machines to pilot is somehow a mecha to you? I'm not mad about the take but it's just not true. I understand why you make the comparison but there is no "technically" about it.
Personally, Gundam is the best. My favorites are 00 and Iron blooded orphans. But there is a far less known one called broken blade that is very good. And it doesn't have any of that garbage 3d cgi shit.
watched ... gundam wing? thought it was basically dragonball with mechs, lol.
Macross for me, Plus having some extremely slick action sequences and music, especially. plot is ok.
Oh man, Gundam Wing takes me back to the days when I could watch Toonami and didn't have mortgage payments. While the writing was all over the place and usually not in a good way, I did enjoy how often Heero crashed and wrecked any mobile suit he got into, purely because that's exactly what would have happened if I got behind the controls of a giant death robot in my teens.
I should have specified. I don't like MOST of Gundam. But the Gundam series that I do enjoy are top tier. Like 00. I hate when they get too crazy and god like. Like unicorn. Or the original.
Based on the description, I thought you watched G Gundam. That one is actually DB with mechs
86. It’s not your standard big metal dudes mecha, but if you’re looking for an extremely well written, well animated, gritty, and emotionally compelling experience, then you’re in for a good time…. Followed by a bad time, but the good kind of bad time.
not really focused on the mecha part but I always recommend Evangeleon especialy since it has a similiar philosophical and bittersweet vibe to it similiar to AC VI, if you're not into that kinda stuff I also recommend Gundam
PS2, originally for both games. Loved the cel sharing of the second. The anime is really fun. Other than that one, my fav mecha anime is Gundam 8th MS Team. Mainly cause I grew up watching Wing and G so seeing front line grunts have a story was refreshing and eye opening rather than flamboyant machines and characters (though I absolutely love them).
So guys I have never watched any mecha anime
So I'm on a quest to discover the most thrilling mecha anime series out there. If you have any favorites or hidden gems in mind, please share them with me. So drop your recs on some of the best mecha anime(s)
Thanks if u replied.
Hey thanks for this, I've seen a lot of the older stuff but I missed some of these and it sounds like your taste is great. I've always heard Patlabor is a sign of good taste.
What is Gundam 00 like tonally speaking? Like if G Gundam is a 1 and Zeta/Ideon are 10, how upset am I going to be by the end of this thing?
Here are some of the most popular ones;
Code Geass is a masterpiece with one of the best main characters of all time and a suspenseful plot.
Gurren Lagann is one of the best mecha of all time. It has amazing characters, story and visuals while also being beloved by those who don’t like mecha. Probably the one I recommend most.
86 is a really popular modern one.
Gundam: The Witch From Mercury is a modern Gundam series.
Iron Blooded Orphans Gundam is standalone and an entry point for Gundam for many.
Macross is a classic.
Eureka Seven is a popular 2000s mecha show.
IBO and Witch from Mercury made me fall in love with the mecha genre. IMO, Orphans is the perfect introduction since the politics don't get extremely heavy til the end, and even then, they aren't overly complicated.
Eureka is shit not worth watching and i would like to add Evangelion(i know it's not a classical mecha but it's a masterpiece) and Break Blade(Movie edition)
This person mechas
I'd add Gunbuster, Macross Plus, Giant Robo and Knight x Magic to the list personally as well.
Oh and if you want the oldest one I know of Tetsujin 28
Patlabor rocks
You have excellent taste. Escaflowne and Big O never get mentioned.
Thanks! I’m just an old-ish mecha buff.
Gundam is a massive massive franchise. These days people mention iron blooded orphans and0080 as good entry points. And they are. But back in my day the Gundam entryway was Gundam Wing and G Gundam.
Gundam Wing is a child soldier political war story and G Gundam is more akin to a sports anime. Both fantastic in different ways.
And that difference in tone also perfectly exemplifies my other two suggestions. Zoids. Chaotic Century is the child soldier war story, and New Century Zero is the sports anime.
Speaking of sports mecha anime. IGPX was awesome.
And one last one that I almost never see mentioned that I really loved a lot was Vandread.
Someone else finally mentions Rahxephon, I never see this series recommended.
Rahxephon is weird and poorly paced. It has good moments - one particular arc absolutely got me. It's worth a watch... But I think I'd recommend it to addicts who really need a mecha anime.
Evangelion is amazing. It got me into anime as a whole
So what are some of the best mecha anime (in your opinion), and why? I tried getting into it when I first started anime but didn't like it at the time. Now that I've watched a decent amount, I want to give it a real try :)
Either Zeta Gundam, Votoms, Giant Robo the animation, Gundam 0080, Turn A Gundam, GaoGaiGar, Evangelion, or Gunbuster. It is hard to pick between them
Mobile Suit Gundam Unicorn is by and far my favorite, but it kinda requires having seen four other entries in the series beforehand. One of those four entries, Zeta, is my third favorite mecha, my second favorite being Gurren Lagann, and my fourth favorite being Code Geass. Those are all actually in my top ten favorite anime in general list.
Eureka Seven is also very good.
What's your top 10 if I may ask. Here are mine.
Evangelion
Code Geass
Steins;Gate
Gurren Lagann
Cowboy Bebop
FMA Brotherhood
Angel Beats!
Death Note
Naruto
Trigun
Mobile Suit Gundam Unicorn
Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood
Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann
Mobile Suit Zeta Gundam
SukaSuka
Casshern Sins
Steins;Gate
Code Geass
Fate/Zero
Yu-Gi-Oh 5Ds
My tastes are, like, kind of all over the place, I guess.
What are the four entries that you are referring to? I kinda want to start watching unicorn but I figure I have to work from the beginning. I'm assuming that you're referring to 0079, zeta, double zeta, and chars counterattack?
> I'm assuming that you're referring to 0079, zeta, double zeta, and chars counterattack?
It's technically ZZ, not double zeta, but yeah those are the exact four entries I was talking about. And in that specific order, too.
Macross is my favorite
Gurren Lagann! And FLCL might count. I also hear Eureka Seven is great.
I saw FLCL a few months ago and didn't really like it lol
Really though mental issues are more common in today's society than is commonly believed, don't feel bad.
But yeah, as was said above Eureka Seven, may be more up your alley if you don't like FLCL.
Gargantia is really good.
Are you referring to Gargantua on The Verdurous Planet?
What are your favorite Mecha Anime's? Or just some of the best you've watched?
Some of my favorites are Gurenn Lagann,Mobile Suit Gundam 00 and Neon Genesis Evangelion(Until that ending), But after watching Saint Seiya I could say that it's my all time favorite in this category. I recommend anybody who's into Gundam or Neon Genesis to check it out. Saint Seiya may be a bit outdated, but it has some of the most epic fights I have ever seen.
Edit: I can't believe there are so many mecha fans here Lol. Also, I guess nobody but me has watched Saint Seiya huh.
I mean, it is fun to watch and laugh at but there are better shows for that, looking at you Wings of Rean. To be fair I do tend to drop stuff I don't enjoy and I don't include those in these lists but even so it would still be near the bottom.
Super Robot:
Real Robot:
Giant Robot:
Fusion Robot:
Also, let's do a top 10 least favourite for fun:
Did you just put Gundam 00 and Wing at the bottom while you put G Gundam at the top? What is this trash?
Gundam 00 is one of the best Gundam series ever made.
00 is an okay mecha series at best, and a bad Gundam series. And it's better than Wing.
00 has some of the most atrocious dialogue in the franchise, really hokey mid-2000s character designs, and completely forgettable mecha designs. It tries to tackle transhumanism, a common theme in mainline Gundam, in a more direct way with Innovators being a much more sudden adaptation than NewTypes, but primarily fixes them as mysterious villains until the very, very end when they're revealed as fakes to push genuine Innovators. What it does do well, Saji's arc in season 2, or Setsuna's relationship with his home country, is simultaneously squandered: Saji's tied to Louise who has an mediocre arc, and Setsuna never gets enough solo time to explore the concerns of the middle east outside of his personal history. SEED Destiny is the worst Gundam, but 00 is the Most Anime in the worst way.
00 isn't even in the same ballpark as the better Gundam series like 0079, Z, ZZ, Turn A, 08th MS Team, Unicorn, or even IBO which is one of the better non-UC entries.
G excels at what it is: Big, dumb, completely over the top mecha fights. It is a series that divorces itself from the franchise as a whole, not taking itself seriously. It has a horse Gundam. It's a wonderful celebration of mecha spectacle.
Also, I don't mean to get down on you if you love 00. Plenty of folks do because it has parts that speak to them and that they enjoy. I just want to clarify why myself and others don't regard it highly in the Gundam pantheon.
Wing: An absolute clusterfuck of a story that is nigh on incomprehensible with roughly 10 characters switching sides every episode. The visual design is an absolute mess with each individual element being great but none of them fitting together into one cohesive art style.
00: Fuck Gundam 00. At least most people nowadays recognise that Wing is a bit shit but people, such as yourself, still consider 00 to be good. Multiple plot holes in both seasons, a complete lack of any story structure in the second season, several characters who lack any point to them, two of the factions in the first season wear similar uniforms and have a similar name making them really hard to distinguish from one another, terrible mechanical design, dull and unlikeable main characters (outside of Lockon, though his story starts off as predictable and is then ridiculous in S2), Trans-Am is the most cringe worthy example of Sunrise's devotion to Char, they used the same plot 3 fucking times in season 2 because they lacked any sort of imagination and just wanted to copy Zeta, they never to explain just what innovators are (and it isn't in the good 'a horror film not explaining its monster' kind of way),and a villain who's grand plan is incomprehensible. The only good things are the music and the fights, though I don't care about anyone in said fights so it robs them of any real meaning.
G: A fun wuxia inspired martial arts adventure story that plays into how camp it is. It has top tier visual direction, a varied cast with interesting motivations, one of the best death scenes ever, open super robot mecha designs, a robot horse that is driven by a horse, and a song in Cantonese about how great Hong Kong is as a tourist destination. It is ridiculous, full of heart, carefully planned, and totally awesome. It doesn't try to be anything else other than a fun martial arts tale and it doesn't care what producers, investors, etc think of it. Because of that it manages to pull it off excellently.
> Also, let's do a top 10 least favourite for fun: > > Gundam G Reco
This pains me.
Neon Genesis Evangelion, Full Metal Panic, Iron Blooded Orphans, Zeta Gundam, Code Geass, Gurren Laggan.
Zeta Gundam has two of my favorite OPs, such bangers
Not even Pixar's best Mecha anime tbh
ZZ Gundam (and the rest of the UC if you haven't), the Macross franchise, Big O, patlabor, GaoGaiGar, Votoms, Ideon, Dunbine, Nadesico, Escaflowne, Rahxephon, Eureka 7, Mospeada, FSS, Gunbuster.
Could list more but there be plenty enough in that list.
It might be antihype, but fairly justified tbh.
A lot of non-mecha watchers think it's one of the best mecha anime around and the reason for that is because it doesn't really play out like a mecha anime.
Except for the fact that Code Geass plays out exactly like every mecha anime ever.
For me, it is the original Macross, mainly because it is character focused, has good plot and character writing, and is visually pleasing.

P.S: For those who say that all mecha is trash, please save it, this is not the place.
I personally think 86 is very similar to Code Geass in a lot of ways. Code Geass started my lean towards mecha anime that has mechs in it, but aren't the centerpiece of the entire plot. (Oh no, the alliance has the super duper mech and we need to capture it! plotline for example.)
I love Mecha and Gundam, but my favorite mecha anime are:-
I started my journey into Macross from the Macross Plus. Then I watched Macross Zero and then the original Macross and the Macross Frontier.
I tried watching delta but I just didn't like it.
Watched the original, was a huge fan of Max x Miriya. Macross 2 sucked. Then I saw Plus and Zero.Plus is the best Macross I have seen so far.
For me it was Robotech after school long before I knew what anime was. Then Macross Plus. "Oh wow this is a Robotech sequel." Followed by a descent into anime.
Did the same except tried zero last of the bunch and it dropped after few eps, would you recommend it? I love plus, the original and frontier were good as well but dunno if i should try zero again…
>Macross Plus OVA
>
> - I'll never forget the president of our college anime club rushing up to us with a Laser Disc, announcing "I just got the last 2 episodes and booked the AV room tonight!" The Yoko Kanno OST in this OVA is beyond awesome. "
>
>I've been waiting for you
I prefer the movie over the OVA. But otherwise still the best Macross show IMO. I still love the music 20 years later.
Escaflowne is, and has always been, my single favorite show. There is something about it that resonates with me.
Glad to see a bold shout out to it here! Cheers 😀
Gurren Lagann is just such a masterpiece. Like it's hard to take it completely seriously because it's so ridiculous but the writing, flow of the show, and character design are just so good
It's so rare to see a show that can have you laughing, crying, and then motivate you to do anything you can dream of
Attack on Titan, meat mechas ftw.
It’s honestly hilarious in retrospect how it really did turn into a full on mecha show by the end.
Iron Blooded was something so much needed after the Seed, Destiny, Jupiter (forget actual name) series.
All hail Lelouch!
All heil Lelouch!
This☝️
If you haven’t seen any mecha anime but still interested in watching some then this thread might be good for recommendations.
Gunbuster and Diebuster
Gunbuster (1988-1989) is great look at the mecha transition between the 80s and 90s. Paving the way for Evangelion. Also it has a nice dose of hardcore sci-fi to it.
And Diebuster (2004-2006) is a balls to the wall sequel where you can see Trigger flexing its style before they left GAINAX.
RaXephon is a great successor to Eva and pretty underrated imo.
Full Metal Panic for everything from comedy, romance, tsunderes, the works.
Also Eureka Seven - skysurfing Mecha!
For Super Robot, I highly recommend Shin Mazinger. It's a re-telling of the original 70s Mazinger Z, a highly influential anime that essentially birthed the modern mecha genre. Shin takes the general plot of Z, characters, even a lot of the weekly monsters and takes it all in a new direction, while referencing other Go Nagai works.
For Real Robot(i;e the story is more serious and the robot is more "realistic") I'd recommend two things: Turn A Gundam, this is from the original creator of Gundam and while it has elements from other Gundam shows(namely some grunts and vehicles) it's totally separate from everything.
Unlike your typical Gundam, the sky isn't falling here, Earth isn't at war, well not totally. Usually space invaders as is typical in Gundam, but they're not fascist bad guys, in fact Turn A is not really battle heavy. The Moonrace aren't out to destroy the Earth, they want to resettle it, as they once did. A lot of the series is more political in nature, with the fights being short and sweet. The body count in this show is extremely low, especially for the main character, who only kills 2 or 3 people total.
Then there's Gunbuster, an anime that starts off as a mecha homage to Aim for the Ace, while quickly becoming a beautiful and powerful series in its own right. Combined with amazing mecha designs and great writing. It's from Hideaki Anno, who later did Evangelion. I highly recommend this, but for right now it's sub only, with a dub TBD.
Gundam Unicorn
Full metal panic is my favourite. The first mecha show I watched. Good overall plot and good romance. Will always have a special place in my heart.
Sell me into your favorite mecha anime, don't recommend me Darling in the Franxx / Evangelion.
I'm not really into Mecha animes, but I want to know if there's anything that's worth watching
I'm not sure I'd classify 86 as Mecha but it IS fantastic.
The main characters drive mechs and fight in them. Not sure how it doesn't qualify
Code geass is definitely a mecha anime I've watched and naruto
Naruto has to be my fav mecha anime
Mobile Suit Gundam Unicorn
Macross Frontier
Gundam Build Fighters
Mobile Suit Gundam: Iron-Blooded Orphans
Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann
Giant Robo the Animation: The Day the Earth Stood Still
Macross Plus
Juushinki Pandora/Last Hope
That covers a number of my favorites. I love mecha.
Also Mobile Suit Gundam: 00. Loved that one
The Gundam franchise has so many good entries in it! 00 isn't one of my top picks personally, but it's definitely a good one. I especially love its OPs and EDs.
The only 2 mecha animes I've watched (other than darling in the franx) we're 86 and code Geass and I absolutely love those two anime. Though the main genre of each show isn't mecha so do you think I'll enjoy any of the ones you mentioned.
Iron-Blooded Orphans for sure, 86 gives off very similar vibes as that one so if you like one you should also like the other.
The four main Gundam shows that I mentioned Unicorn is a sequel to in another comment (those being the very first series, Zeta, ZZ, and Char's Counterattack) are also the closest you'll get to Code Geass. Code Geass is what happens when you take Char Aznable from the first Gundam series, make him a bit more extra, and then make him the main character of a show.
If you are into Gundam, you have to mention Gundam SEED/Destiny. Sunrise became big after SEED/Destiny and is largely why Geass and Unicorn got the massive budget they did.
Macross Plus 🤤
Have to cosign Iron Blooded Orphans. Looks great, great story, doesn't require extra Gundam knowledge. It's a great stand alone story.
If there's one statement that grind my gears is the statement: "the best Mecha isn't about Mecha". HOW FAR UP YOUR ASS DO YOU HAVE TO BE TO SAY THAT AND BELIEVE IT? Yes Code Geass is good, but the Mecha is such an afterthought that I refuse to call it a good Mecha. To me, the best Mecha involves the balance between Mecha & pilot.
Here's a few examples I can think of:
There's more I can think of, but you get the point. And some of you many think, "but the Mecha are so unnecessary". So are sentient talking Cars, High School girls using tanks, a world of monsters, or a world of robots. Just because something is unnecessary, doesn't mean you can't make a compelling story out of it
Either way, Mecha is peak entertainment. You guys are just boring
I don't know why but this rant reminded me of the Count of Monte Cristo anime, they changed the setting into being in 5053, and the duels are fought in mechs, would recommend.
Mecha is one of my favourite genres of fiction, and I find this dichotomy between human drama and mecha action to be a common but odd one that we don't apply to other genres. If we are discussing an action movie, we don't generally say "action movies should be balanced between gun action and human drama", or of a romance novel "romance novels should be balanced between romantic scenes and human drama" or of horror "horror should be balanced between scary scenes and human drama".
All of those statements are and should be considered ridiculous, because in an action movie the action and the drama are not two discrete parts that sit next to each other and are unrelated(at least, in a competent action movie). Likewise, in romance the drama is the romantic story, in horror the drama is in the frightening situation, etc.
But in mecha, there is this discourse that X mecha show is about the drama instead of just being cool robot fights (the classic example being Evangelion, since Evangelion was widely popular among people who were not otherwise mecha fans and so needed to be differentiated from what people imagine as standard mecha fare). But I would challenge anyone to find a mecha show where the primary activity in the show is just contextless robot fights. In mecha shows, interacting with the mecha in some way IS the drama. And because all a show needs to be a mecha show is have mecha in it, this drama can take a variety of forms - a mecha show can be a space opera (Gundam), a superhero comic style action story (Mazinger), a cop comedy (Patlabor), a cosmic horror (Ideon), a psychological drama (Evangelion), a gritty military-political thriller (Dougram), a romance (08th MS Team) a tragedy (Bokurano) or anything else. But what they all have in common is that they all involve human drama inseparably tied up in interacting with a big robot. It's that simple. There's no dichotomy between the two.
Also, Attack on Titan doesn't get this drama/mecha dichotomy treatment, and that show is a mecha show. Specifically, Attack on Titan is literally just Gundam. If it were a Gundam AU it wouldn't even be the first Gundam show where an angry kid who likes getting into fistfights swears revenge against all Titans after he watches a Titan kill his mother.
I kind of wish 08th MS Team had focused more on the ground war/jungle fighting side of things. >!I think one of the most impactful arcs for me was the confrontation between the 8th and the lost Zeon squad in the village. Seeing how the respective sides handled that disaster of a fight and its aftermath definitely sat with me for longer than the final confrontation. I would have liked seeing more about the stories between the different sides' grunts since it seems like most Gundam series always culminate in some massive final battle.!<
You might have already seen it if you've seen 08th MS Team, but you'd probably be into War in the Pocket. The main characters are a civilian kid, an operative in a Zeon special forces unit, and a test pilot working for the Federation. It's a small side story happening at the same time as A Baoa Qu from the original series.
In 08th MS Team I am a big fan of the Gouf fight, since we get to see the standard Gundam fight setup (one ace against a bunch of grunts) from the POV of the grunts.
It’s actually astonishing how much emotion Armored core 6 has despite not showing a single human face in the game
I absolutely agree. I also love how it invites the player to create their own character designs in their head.
imo, AC6 has very good story writing + voice acting to back it up and allow to deliver on the emotions it wants to deliver very nicely
hail Rusty (best side character)
86
86 is tremendous
That it is
That it is...
BELIEVE IN GETTER
BRO KNOWS PEAK
Currently playing through AC VI and I was wondering if there’s any cool series, or OVA y’all would recommend.
The last time this was asked, I recommended series most alike Armored Core, barring Gundam:
Ghost in the Shell, Madox 01, Appleseed, Megazone 23, Macross, Arcadia of my Youth, Patlabor, AKIRA, Votoms, Cyber City Oedo, Angel Cop and MD Geist.
86 Eighty Six is a good non-humanoid mechame imo. It's probably my favorite one I've seen. Im gonna go watch a bunch on your list because I've only heard of a couple before!
Watched for unique mech design
Stayed for cute dork Milize
Lots of Gundam series. A franchise doesn’t go on for 40 years and not have great content.
My pick to start is Gundam Iron-Blooded Orphans. It’s self contained so there’s no need to know anything before it, and it’s also the closest Gundam series in feel to AC6.
A story about mercenaries and fighting against oppression. Themes of finding your own will and place in the world. Human Augmentation. Quick, zippy, and gritty combat (albeit, melee focused). Interesting and unique mecha design style. PILE BUNKER. etc.
I LOVE Gundam Iron-Blooded Orphans, but I think Aldnoah. Zero (basically the same premise) nails the mecha fights better.
In terms of the fights I disagree. Gundam IBO's fights perfectly captures the feeling of becoming an ace Armored Core pilot: nailing series of individual enemies with well executed attacks using flashy mechs custom made to your combat style. The protagonist zips around the battlefield and spends a lot of time brutalizing the in-universe equivalent of MT's in between flashy duels with other Gundam pilots.
Aldnoah Zero has interesting fights, but the dynamic is pretty much entirely inverted - the protagonist pilots the equivalent of a stock MT and has to use big brains to outsmart enemies with powerful and unique mechs.
And the corporate politics too, the mercenary work, and trying to keep everyone paid while keeping the mecha maintained, etc.
Gurren Lagann. The animation is insane, the mechs are badass, the soundtrack is amazing & the plot is batshit crazy.
not even really a mech anime
Watched Gurren for mechs and was horribly disappointed.
Gundam 08th MS Team is pretty good. Feels somewhere between Mechwarrior and Armored Core.
0083 is gundam's answer to top gun with some of, if not, best hand drawn animation in the franchise
