Insomniacs after school, easily one of the most wholesome heart-warming romance animes
Really such a nice change from most romance anime out there.
That one was great! Very relaxing watch, lovely art style and some bits and pieces about astrophotography (I'm into that topic). Also lack of usual clichés, love triangles and dumb fanservice.
After season 3 ended, I ended up reading the entire Manga. It became one of my top mangas.
*spoiler >!my only issue is how Miko and Ishigami end up repeating the cycle of trying to get each other to confess after what they all went through. It would've been better to realize what was happening and just confess in the end.!<
Horimiya got me into the romance genre so that’s probably the one I’d pick for that reason. Objectively I know that it shouldn’t be number one, but man I enjoyed it.
Also, The Angel Next Door Spoils Me Rotten and Shikimori’s Not Just a Cutie deserve a mention.
Horimiya is the most feel good anime I’ve seen. Even just the friendships make me smile, everyone is so perfect I love it lol
You guys know what got me into romance genre? Future diary!
Jesus christ, that one make me cry so hard, I cant watch anything Clannad/Clannad - After Story - related 😂😭
Toradora.
The fight scene in Toradora is up there with any battle shounen
Yeah Horimiya, they get straight to the point and they way she stays homes and clean, gets jealous, demanding of him is very much how some women act.
I didn't even watch Clannad but I would put it over Bunny Girl
Hi! I want to watch some cute anime shows/movies with my bf. I was wondering you guys opinions on the best one. If they’re sad that’s a bonussss, love a good tear jerker!!
+1 for Darling In The Franxx
Hi Score Girl
My Happy Marriage
A Silent Voice
You guys might also enjoy these tragic action romances (and one comedic):
Battle Angel (the 1993 anime and 2019 movie)
Dangers In My Heart. Hands down. Made me tear up almost every episode later on in the series. First 2 episodes have some cringey elements, but it's extremely wholesome and meaningful the rest of the way.
How is no one recommending Horimiya and The Dangers In My Heart?
Kimi ni todoke
•Angel next door spoils me rotten
•Bunny Senpai (don’t know exact name)
•Alya hides her feelings (people say it’s gonna be banger)
•Darling in the franxx (expect tears)
•Kono oto tomare (it’s about music, music here is great at that, but character development is soooo good, slow burn romance, manga is awesome)
Thats first what comes to my mind. I probably missed something good, so in case I remember, I will add to this list 😉
Thank you!!! I’m going to add these to my list!!
Been avoiding this genre for a while and have pretty much watched everything else, who’s got some good recommendations thanks in advance !
Fruits Basket (2019), The Angel Next Door Spoils me Rotten, My Dress Up Darling, The Galaxy Next Door, Honey Lemon Soda, Horimiya, 365 days to the Wedding, Our Love was Always 10cm Apart.
The single greatest of all time is Maison Ikkoku.
You misspelled cowboy bebop
Didn’t know Cowboy Bebop was considered a romance anime…
Kaguya-sama: Love is War
Clannad
Fruits Basket 2019
The Dangers In My Heart
Oregairu
Chihayafuru
Is your lie in April good?
I just finished watching this... made me happy and sad... you'll appreciate it more if your a musician...
Yes... especially if you need an excuse to cry.
High School Dxd or Yousuga no Sora
Toradora for the story and the complexity of the protagonists Kimi ni todoke for the growth of all the protagonists Dangers in my Heart always for the growth of the protagonists and because the two of them are both "special"
Toradora mainly because it was the first romance anime I watched, and it was so good
Maison Ikkoku is the gold standard.
I personally alke my dress up darling
Clannad. And although not a romance, Eureka Seven had a great romantic payoff.
I’ve been looking for some good shows to watch since I feel like a lot of the ones I watched recently just weren’t great.
Here’s a few that I’ve watched (in alphabetical order):
Akagami no Shirayukihime, Akatsuki no Yona, Ao Haru Ride, Clannad/After Story, Horimiya, Inu x Boku ss, Itazura na Kiss, Kaguya-sama, Kamisama Kiss, Kimi ni Todoke, Maid-Sama, Nana, Ore Monogatari, Rent a Gf, Sakura Trick, Sankarea, Say I Love You, Tsuki ga Kirei, Vampire Knight, Your Lie in April.
Plenty more of course, especially when you consider how many have romance as a sub genre.
Thanks!
Golden Time
Saekano
Bunny Girl Senpai
Ore Monogatari!!
My Little Monster
ReLIFE
I loved Ore Monogatari and I mentioned it in my list. Bunny Girl Senpai was alright personally and I dropped Golden Time and ReLife. I’ll probably need to get back to those 2 eventually.
Toradora
I remember dropping it because of the main girl but I heard the ending was super worth it so I may have to pick it back up again soon.
Golden Time
Oregairu
After the Rain
ReLife
ReLife: Final Arc
I enjoyed Saekano !
I strongly recommend Kamisama Kiss. It has a beautiful romance with great progress. 2 seasons and a fantastic ending.
Edit: forgot to mention that the story is also very good with a great female lead.
Oh I included that in the little list I mentioned in the post. I remember absolutely loving that one when I watched it years back.
I missed the name in the list XD sorry about that
I've watched "My dress up darling", "Horimiya" and "Rascal does not dream...", currently planning to watch "Kayuga-Sama: Love is war".
What else can you suggest me to watch and overall what's your favourite one?
My favorite romance anime is Tsukigakirei.
The relationship felt real, the OST is incredible, the animation style is unique, the ending is my favorite out of any show and it skips over most tropes in romance anime.
Second and third favorites below.
Toradora
Kimi Ni Todoke
I’m confused. I found Tsuki ga Kirei so much more genuine than Toradora and Kimi No Todoke oh my god how can anyone bear all these miscommunication plots is beyond me. Seems more directed at high schoolers than a mature audience.
Other shows on Tsuki Ga Kirei level imo are:
Your Lie in April Golden Time Shirayuki hime
I loved Tsukigakirei.
Kimi Ni Todoke I adored. The MC was wholesome as can be. Just a genuine girl that cared about people and that resonated with me. The second season was infuriating, but the ending made it all worth it. If a show can make me mad like that, then I love it.
Toradora I love Taiga and the complexity of the cast. They all love someone and it doesn't get reciprocated with the exception of Ryuji and Taiga. It was painful, but I loved them.
Your Lie in April is my favorite anime, but not for romance. I haven't seen the other two.
I watched this when it came out, not done a rewatch and I still think about it when I’m thinking of some of my favorite anime. Has some real emotion to it.
I watched it two weeks ago. It was incredible. The ending was one of the most beautiful things I can remember. It was so heartwarming. I absolutely adore it and everything about the anime. ❤️
Another vote for Toradora!
I haven’t seen a ton of anime yet, but so far, none of them compare to the emotional rollercoaster of Toradora!
And good news—it’s the r/anime annual rewatch, starting today, so join the fun!
Kimi ni Todoke. It’s a slow-burn, relatable, cute, and wholesome anime that can be surprisingly hilarious. However, it’s definitely a romance not a rom-com. Featuring fantastic side characters, its well-executed drama and character development keep it engaging. Despite adapting not even half of the manga, Season 3 is on the way. Sawako stands out as my favorite shoujo female character and one of my overall favorites in all of anime. She is just so precious.
One of the best romance animes I’ve seen. Hands down. Iirc, they’re coming back with a new season right?
Guess I should definitely check it out (right after Toradora). Thanks!
Insomniacs After School became my favorite romance, its just feels so natural to watch the story unfold.
Fruit Basket Great Story Awesome Music And One Of The Best Ending To Romantic Anime Ever There I Said It
It was really cute. Idk best but I really liked it still
Here’s my top five:
Clannad
A Lull in the Sea
Love, Chuunibyou and other Delusions
Toradora
Love is War
Honorable mention: Rascal Does Not Dream of Bunnygirl Senpai. I probably would’ve enjoyed this series more if I didn’t read the LN first, which is why it’s not top five
Tsuki ga Kirei (So simple, so pure, so wonderfully executed.)
Kimi no Na Wa (A normie choice for sure, but it delivers where it counts)
White Album 2 (I'm twisted, I know, but it's the best damn love triangle I've seen.)
Rascal Does Not Dream of Bunny Girl Senpai (A sentimental favorite as it was the gateway show to me embracing my weebness.)
Tamako Love Story (While the preceding series gets a "good try, KyoAni." from me, this one just hits it out of the park.)
Honorable Mentions (no particular order):
I love Kaguya-sama, but I consider it more of a romance-themed comedy than a straight-up romance (For now - let's see what S3 brings us.)
Kokoro Connect has an interesting set-up and colorful characters, but I have some issues with the execution of some story bits.
5 Centimeters per Second is a little too real and was a little too rough around the edges for my soft, soft heart.
Horimiya was lovely and sweet, but the anime adaptation was a little disjointed in its execution. The manga is a better experience.
Just Because! - Quiet, deliberate, atmospheric, real. Saddled with the dumbest plot contrivance I have ever seen.
(Love is Like) After the Rain - This one goes places you might not expect. A real love story without a romance. An affirming message. Beautiful visuals and music.
Fellow Tsuki ga kirei lover, wish there were more like it
Such a great show, full of the typical awkwardness as kids but very sweet, very relaxing. I think out of all the romance anime I've watched Tsuki ga kirei had me rooting out loud for Azumi the most
Man fr. Still trying to find a romance anime that’ll make me feel what Tsuki ga kirei did
Bunny girl does a great job of depicting a realistic relationship even though there's supernatural things happening. The best part to me was that Mai and Sakuta aren't perfect people or protagonists but they are perfect for each other and balance the other out.
Apparently I don't actually watch very much romance anime, but here is what stands out:
Fruits Basket (Reboot)
Cross Game
Aoi Hana (mostly because of the manga, but I wouldn't have read it if I didn't watch this first!)
Bloom into You
Lovely Complex
Bloom Into You
Adachi to Shimamura
Kashimashi girl meets girl
Citrus
Sakura Trick
Fellow yuri enjoyer :)
I've dropped tons of romance anime and really need to watch a good romantic or shoujo anime. So far I've dropped Clannad, Love is war, Ancient Magus bride, Maid same, Juliet boarding school, wolf girl and dark prince, and many more that I don't even remember.
And my all-time favs are my girlfriend is a shob*tch, Ao chan can't study, Air, Tsuredure children, Chivalry of a failed knight, Kamisama kiss, Ouran high school host club, fruits basket, wotakoi, scum's wish, Charlotte, Inu x boku secret service, toilet bound Hanako kun, chobits, future diary and my love story. I'll watch anything as long as it's either a good rom-com or romantic thriller with drama and romance with action.
Your Name
Your Lie in April
Can't believe nobody mentioned the dangers in my heart, peak romance.
Just watched it thank you for that it was the best
Glad you enjoyed it! Have you seen bunny girl senpai? I also thought it was a great romance and one of a kind.
Honestly. It went from weekly manga gimmick to unironically one of the best romances.
Bro said he dropped peak romance 💀
I can understand that, Some of the peak Romance anime are really emotionally demanding (Clannad series, Your Lie in April, etc.)
Also mentally demanding. With Clannad you need to watch 1 season of mind numbing garbage before you get to the watchable stuff.
All the ones you’ve dropped are ones that you need to watch a bit more to like, so just try love is war again and but some others are my dress up darling, quintessential quintuplets, 177013
to be fair, clannad is not just a romance anime. OP avoided the feel train lol
Adding on to this guys recommendations toradora, 228922 are also good
I can vouch for "Angel next door spoils me rotten"... My favourite rom anime to date. Can't wait for S2. I will have to check the other one out though.
Edit: I HIGHLY recommend Insomniacs After School. Just started it but oh boy is it wholesome.
Romance anime is my favorite genre, and I pretty much watched all I can find, so tell me your favorites and I’ll watch it if I haven’t already.
This is 100% niche but I fucking loved My Little Monster (tonari no kaibutsu-kun). Mostly because I’m a big stem nerd and this anime deals with studying/school.
As for guilty pleasures... Amnesia. For all the wrong reasons.
My Little Monster \o/
Also, I loved its opening so much!
Clannad + Clannad after story. The feelings in after story just feels real and I can't imagine how people who have tp go through something like that feel.

Top 10 romance anime:
I have watched romance animes like "sign of affection" and others, but I think there are better ones out there.
My top 5 romances are:
{Kaguya-sama: Love is War}
{Clannad} + {Clannad Afterstory}
{Fruits Basket 2019}
{Chihayafuru}
{The Dangers In My Heart}
Honourable mention to {Bloom Into You} though I'd honestly recommend the manga more as the anime only adapts half of it and it's the latter half where it really shines. It is definitely one of the best yuri romances out there.

Is kaguya sama worth it tho? I watched the first few episodes and felt like it was a never ending game.
Definitely. The romance does take a bit but the character writing is amazing. S3 + The First Kiss Never Ends movie are two of the best arcs in romcom back-to-back, in my opinion.
There is also a lot of depth to their game but it does take a bit for that to be shown. It is primarily a comedy-focused anime with a major dramatic development at the end of every season with the exception of s3 which has two drama arcs and the movie which is pretty much all drama with a little comedy.
Clannad and chihayafuru are in my Overall top 5 anime, such amazing shows. Still waiting for chihayafuru season 4 though :(
this, and it's not even close. every single episode in season 2 and most in the second half of S1 evoke more emotion and have more meaningful personal and romantic progress than most romance anime's final episodes.
it's unfortunate the first 3 episodes being bad (MC's "low" starting point and cringe/gross classmates) turned a lot of people off of it
my runner ups:
{ReLIFE} (don't miss the 4 OVAs after S1) I love this for a lot of reasons other than the romance, but I also really loved the romance in it.
{Rascal Does Not Dream of Bunny Girl Senpai} (not at all like what the name suggests) great banter and chemistry + they actually trust each other and talk about and resolve problems/misunderstandings like normal people.
{Your Name.} (amazing romance movie)
{Kimi wa Houkago Insomnia} (insomniacs after school) very natural romance, very little "typical anime bullshit" - one of my favorites because of that.
{Spice and Wolf}
^(ONA | Status: Finished | Episodes: 13 | Genres: Comedy, Drama, Romance, Slice of Life)

Your Lie in April! (if you can steel your heart a bit - unforgettable)
Also absolutely LOVED Your Name.
Honorable mentions: Kaguya sama, Fruits Basket, Nisekoi, and the very slow burn and barely romantic Apothecary Diaries (only because the pairing is so great)
How the fuck is no one mentioning horimiya
Side ships went nowhere and the series kind of meandres into a straight up SoL after the midway point. Horimiya is just 'fine'.
I agree 100%. Everyone acts like it’s the best romance anime out there. It’s pretty mid. Now Fruits basket and Toradora- those are supreme.
RIGHT!! Horimiya supremacy!!! I love that they get together right away and there’s still so much growth in their relationship!! So dang adorable!
