TL;DR Some of the best Minecraft mods include Thaumcraft, Tinker's Construct, Create, and Minecolonies. These mods offer unique gameplay experiences ranging from magical exploration to advanced engineering and colony management.
Thaumcraft
Thaumcraft is widely praised for its uniqueness and creativity in design, offering a standalone magical experience that can keep players engaged without any additional mods [1:2],
[2:1]. It provides an intricate progression system and a rich world of magic, making it a favorite among many players
[2:2],
[2:5].
Tinker's Construct
Tinker's Construct is another popular mod, known for its tool customization and enhancement features. It allows players to create and modify tools with various materials, providing depth and replayability [2:3]. While not as deep as Thaumcraft, it's considered essential by many players who enjoy crafting and building
[1:10].
Create Mod
The Create mod offers a unique steam-powered technology experience, allowing players to build complex mechanical contraptions [3:3]. It's praised for its intuitive design and aesthetic appeal, providing an alternative to traditional "electricity" based tech mods
[5:6]. The mod has gained popularity for its innovative approach to automation and engineering
[5:4].
Minecolonies
Minecolonies adds life to solo worlds by introducing NPCs that interact with the environment, allowing players to manage and grow their own colonies [1:1],
[1:9]. This mod is ideal for players looking to add depth and community dynamics to their Minecraft experience.
Quality of Life and Utility Mods
Several mods are considered must-haves for improving gameplay quality and utility. Mouse Tweaks enhances inventory management by allowing easier item transfers [3:1],
[4:1]. Sodium and Lithium optimize performance, ensuring smoother gameplay and higher frame rates
[3:2],
[4:5]. Inventory sorting and AppleSkin provide additional convenience and functionality
[4:3].
These mods cater to different playstyles and preferences, making them some of the best choices for enhancing your Minecraft experience. Whether you're into magic, engineering, or colony management, there's a mod out there to suit your interests.
THAUM CRAFT THE GREATEST STANDALONE MOD IN TERMS OF UNIQUENESS AND CREATIVITY OD DESIGN (in my opinion) even has interesting progression in its guide book thing unlike every mod I’ve ever played
im a train nerd so either immersive railroading or the create mod
Check out Little Logistics for 1.18.2 and above, the mini locomotive is amazing
Probably The Legend of Notch: Reincarnation, an old, old mod that turned the entire game into a big RPG. Maybe it's nothing very original, but I loved playing it regardless, haha
Terrafirmacraft and thaumcraft, sadly neither had been updated for anything after 1.12
I know it's not a mod but if you want to find the same feel of terrafirmacraft there is a game called Vintage Story that is pretty good.
It's also one of my favorites, I love the variety of tools you can make and enhance
1.7.10 TC with the add-ons are the absolute best. Arguably constructs armoury and iguanas tweaks are the best. After 1.12 it's downhill. Tetra surpasses TC personally for later versions.
Forget the actual name but it was an old custom boats/airships mod. You built your craft and used a champagne bottle to finalize it. Had engines and cannons and I made all kinds of warships.
The other is Minecolonies. I've always wanted a way to liven up my solo worlds beyond just villagers. Minecolonies has people who actually interact with the world.
Minecolonies has made a lot of progress since it started, but it's such a nostalgic mod to me because I still remember playing it back on 1.2.5. It has been around for so long that it's actually impressive that it gets regular updates. Idk is it's new people developing it now, but still.
Same that and twilight forest are my top of all time. Hope tinkers gets over to 1.20 eventually so I can add it to my server.
I tried playing it recently and the hoops I had to go through to install and play it with the way the launcher works now were unbelievably annoying. It was one of those old mods that didn't use Forge, rather you had to directly insert the mod into the Minecraft.jar (which is now extremely difficult due to the version system with the post-1.6 launcher). It took me two days of trying to get it working.
I had to find some sketchy third party client to even get it working, honestly it's not worth the trouble. There's probably a Yogscast video of it
There’s thousands of mods in Minecraft community but which one is the greatest of all time.
If we count any mod then it's got to be Too Many Items (father of NEI, grandfather of JEI)
If talking about content mods, it's harder and depends a lot on personal taste but I'd personally pick Thaumcraft. Back in the day there really was nothing remotely like Thaumcraft 4, and even now 10 years later while there's some very good mods in their own right that take a few pages from its book (no pun intended), they're still so far away from it. It's one of the only mods you could just have entirely on its own, nothing else installed, and still have an incredible experience with it.
Spot on, on all accounts. The number one answer would be TMI, NEI, JEI, and REI.
Content mods would be Thaumcraft (but I would also add Tinker's Construct to be in the running, too.)
Tinkers is actually my personal 2nd place too and by a decent margin. Can't play a modpack without it and never gets old, only thing about it is that its not nearly as deep as thaumcraft
First, yes. Though Create has become my favorite content mod. There are many that come close, but something satisfying about the steamtech of it.
Thaumcraft is still my favorite mod out of all of them. I miss it
Can't deny the size of thaumcraft, but god I hate this mod, everytime a modpack requires it to finish I'm like "fuck, guess I have to deal with this dogshit again", and I don't think it's thee biggest, my guess would be orespawn or smt, I'm not a big fan of it but it was so big back then
IC2 gave us gregtech, thaumcraft gave us thaumcraft 4. None other mods could really be an answer
twilight forest might be there too, but the mod is only complimentory to other mods, not much by itself
Good taste. For me, IC2 and Twilight forest are the mods I've enjoyed the most.
Well TIL. Apparently a a big inspiration for Factorio was in fact these minecraft mods.
Jei doesnt count or else it would obliterate every single mod ever no question
Which is why both should be included in a modpack lol.
Love those two mods, I’m playing with the both right now in the 1.12.2 pack by tekkit.
I'd always download this, the mod that shrinks you down, and little blocks. It was so much fun to build arenas and let them duke it out.
In my opinion, BetterPVP would be the best choice. It includes Xaero's map, constantly displays your tools and armor status, offers waypoint features, and is highly customizable.
if we're talking about just stock minecraft with only one mod: sodium. modern minecraft runs like garbage without it
Is sodium a server side only mod?
REI and its peripherals (REP, etc.) are better if you're using fabric (fabric is much better for performance). JEI, etc., are all ports from the forge. The performance difference isn't that great, though, to be honest, and they do look slightly different.
Such a good backpack mod. Very useful in any stage of the game, removes the hassle of inventory management by being able to carry massive amounts of items, amazing utilities with upgrades, and it felt like finding my first diamond all over again when i found a jukebox backpack zombie playing creator :)
A must-have cuz it doesn't have any cons, only pros:
Edit: as a reply to yall i dont play on mod packs (only craftmine) so its not that important for me
If I could only pick one mod, it would have to be MouseTweaks. I am so used to it by now, it feels very wierd when I play without it.
Heard of that mod. Tried it, it was actually useful but I always stuck to Vanilla mouse features my entire life so it was kind of time consuming to get used to.
I genuinely forgot that dragging while right clicking to send everything into a chest wasn't vanilla, I get so triggered trying to put stuff into inventories in vanilla now.
I think libraries are a given, like you get one mod, and you are able to run it
i agree, but for players like me that returned to the game years later it’s tedious to go back and forth from Minecraft to the wiki to look at craftings
i had to manually download JEI because for some reason, when I was tryna download it via Modrinth App, it didn't show one for Neoforge 1.21.1 (latest Create update is for Neoforge 1.21.1 for some reason)
honestly imo its more fun to just discover stuff, and recipes and stuff normally
Litematica is a must if you like redesigning your builds in creative
Dynamic lights is nice to have
The aether, although a great mod, doesn't really add anything "must have"
There are 3 mods that i missed when I moved from modded to vanilla, mouse tweaks, inventory sorting and apple skin
Other that I miss and would love are backpack mods on vanilla but they would need to come with a complete update on minecraft inventory
Mouse tweaks was the main one I was thinking of too.
I would also need JEI or whatever the newest one is if only just for the searching inventories trick. If you double click the search bar it darkens anything that doesn't match what you've typed in, including the special @Mod type searches.
I actually can’t play at all without mouse tweaks and zoomify
no mods are must have. apart from some performance mods I never play modded, and even performance mods I dont use often since they take a while after an update gets released to adapt to it.
Saying that performance mods take a while to update to the latest Minecraft version is complete bullshit. The only performance mod I can think of that takes a while to update is Optifine, which isn’t really used anymore for newer versions of the game. Sodium and Lithium always have a version that works with the latest Minecraft version. 1.21.8 released today, and there’s already a version of both of those mods that works with it.
Mouse tweak mods thou.
Do love mouse and inventory tweaks.
Where is that guy that always says "play the game however you like"
That guy doesn't have to be here. I'd say these mods are a mods that do not really add any content that changes the game, sso you can sitll play the game however you want. If you want to add more mods, then sure. There is no real downside to adding these mods in my opinion.
They are all client side by the way.
No idea
But from a girl, play the game how you like
Even if how you like to play is crashing mc threads for various results.
There are so many mods that imo should have been implemented in vanilla years ago. Mouse tweaks, appleskin, and the mod that sorts your inventory with the middle mouse button, these are an absolute must. I haven't touched vanilla minecraft in years because modded is simply better in every way.
Imagine telling your kid self back in 2011 that modded Minecraft looks the way it does currently. Even if you’re not into turning the game into 3D Factorio, the amount of QoL and utility mods we have is absolutely insane.
Imagine knowing you’d be able to “render” hundreds of chunks in any direction with Distant Horizons all while getting crazy frame rates with things like Sodium. And smaller things like all the inventory tweaks like auto transfer, auto sorting, etc.
And on the “turning the game into Factorio” side we’re looking even better. If there’s an automation functionality you can think of, there’s almost certainly a mod that lets you do it plus lots of stuff you didn’t think of.
Applied Energistics 2, Refined Storage, the Integrated Dynamics suite, and now Create of all things, let you connect everything you’ve built together, allowing you to automate anything you need.
And speaking of Create, while it may usually not be the most powerful or performance-friendly option, that mod is just goddamn cool. The amount of cool stuff you can do with that mod is just unbelievable. (Side note: I wish Buildcraft were still around in modern versions. With some updated textures it would work great with Create)
There’s drama in the community sometimes, but it’s important to remember for a moment how good we have it. We get all of this for free on top of a game most of us got for less than $20 over a decade ago. It’s definitely by far the single most valuable entertainment purchase of my entire life.
modded minecraft is the best thing that happened to the game industry
Hard agree. Modding games has always been a thing, but modded Minecraft just has a special sauce. Like people joke about adding too many mods to skyrim and turning it into a different game, but with Minecraft there are tons of mods that literally turn it into entirely different genres of games. Do you want an open world action RPG with skill trees and randomized loot? You want to build a giant automated factory that makes products with dozens of steps at the press of a button? Do you want a cozy farming game with realistic weather and crop requirements? Do you want to just build cool stuff? Any of it can be had with Minecraft mods, and lots of those are not mutually exclusive with one another
minecraft has been a factory building game for me since about 2 months into when i started playing it
honestly, a big part of why i never got super into tech mods back when i picked up modded Minecraft was that it felt like a lot of magic boxes? yeah, like, multiblock magic boxes, but still. imagine showing circa 2014 me Create contraptions.
Magic boxes are easier to make, and the model for them was basically the vanilla furnace, the original magic gray box that processes stuff at the cost of coal.
And when create came out it was praised for being so unique. And since its basically just mechanical power with oversized gears its intuitive, genuinely different from everything running on "electricity", and has a cool aesthetic.
I'm just kinda sick of create being everywhere. And i have a soft spot for Mekanism which is admittedly extra magic boxes that also scream at you.
I totally get the Create oversaturation being a problem. But personally I was away from modded minecraft for a while, with my last interactions with Create being around the time that it first released. So now coming back and seeing the craziness of frogports/factory gauges and trains and steam boilers on top of the funny spinny mod has been really cool
Oh buildcraft was great. That and IC2 were my go-to mods
Same. Even better was the combination of the two with an addon to convert IC2 power to buildcraft power. It made getting a quarry to max speed trivial
I still play tekkit2 it still gets updates also
Not to mention with the way minecart java is set yup you can just play older editions so any older mods still exist.
So true! There have been so many times I’ve gone to add a mod to another game only to see that it hasn’t been updated for the latest version or for the last several versions and there’s no way to downgrade the game
11yo me was struggling to render tekkit classic rofl
buildcraft my beloved
Hi all! I'm new here, and I need some help with modded Minecraft server hosting. There are five of us, we have about 550 mods. Our budget is like $50-$60 per month. Any recommendations?
Thank you.
I run bmc4 and rlcraft on a beelink ser8 minipc. I highly recommend. High ram, powerful cpu, and 1 tb storage.
That's super cool! I never heard of this till now, thanks :)
Check out Homerun Desktop
wtf you doin 550 mods what are you doing
I host servers on dedicated hardware, currently running a ATM server with 500 mods no problem, I sell basic hosting via EBAY but for a large Modpack like that you are looking at £20 per month for hosting.
Breakdown:
Base rate £5
6x CPU cores + 16gb Memory £15
Your own box... just a crappy PC, seriously, less than 8 years old, and buy a domain for $12. Then PM for the rest for the steps. Its easy, fun, and cheap.
For a bunch of mods like what OP mentions, I'd say cpu with 3ghz or more, 16GB of DDR4 memory or more/faster and at least sata ssd for storage.
I'm also a proponent of self-hosting servers when the prospective players are all friends. No need to waste money on hosting when your privacy isn't at risk.
Edit: would even add that buying a domain isn't necessary. You can easily pass on the IP:port to the friends for them to copy/paste into their minecraft client. If it's a private server, there's no need to spend money on public facing esthetics
Thats what I did, I using mcsmanager to run the server though :/ really complicated but I was recommend to by a friend.
You can also use NoIP or FreeDNS, which has a bunch of free domains you can make a subdomain from.
Used to do that with friends as it was easier saying the address aloud than a bunch of numbers
recently set one up with pelican, cheap? yes, was it easy and fun? no, though part of it was my fault for missing one step lol.
It feels like a whole other game. I love the overgrown feel and isolation travelling in dense brush gives me. It is awesome. I am playing with The Wasteland mod, Better Biomes for 7D2D and The Descent - Procedural caves. The decent is amazing because it doubles the game. You have the overworld POI's and then the underground POI's. It fantastic.
Is there a way to install this without much hassle? Maybe some mod pack with those included?
There is a Wabbajack modlist called Smorgasbord by FNS, which includes all of them (The Descent with its addon POI mods - The Vault Pack, Mega Pack, and Dwarven Citadel, Urban Decay, and Better Biomes.) It also has a bunch of other QoL mods and other interesting mods that add stuff like EFT Extraction Pack and IZY's guns. Another great part about the list is it is highly customizable (unlike a lot of other WJ lists) and FNS is a responsive, helpful guy.
I is not really a hassle, you simply download load it manually from the mod nexus, extract the files making sure it is not folders in folders. It needs to be the mod name and then inside that folder the ModInfo.xml file. Then you know it is extracted properly. Then just paste it into the mods folder. C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\7 Days To Die\Mods It is new and as far as I know not in a mod package but you could try mod collections and try using Vortex but not sure how that would work out as I manually add and remove mods.
wow I installed both mods and holy crap, the forest now feels like a real forest! Best of all im on steam deck and it doesnt lag down my system at all! Cant wait to find some caves next, but the main world's vegetation at least in the grassy biome is so filled with vegetation that are so diverse and randomized that it really feels like when I go for walks in a local preserve.
Can you install the Better Biomes on top of Darkness Falls (DF) without breaking DF?
And the procedural caves are actually POIs? I miss the old school caves from the early alpha days, I definitely need to check this out!
Yes and no, no they are not truly POI's from the base mod (that seems to be just cave passages, I could be wrong, it seems more of a frame work mod) but there are add-on mods that add in POI's underground that the caves lead up too and branch off of from them, one with the Fallout Vaults, One with Mines and Dwarven fortresses and another with bridges and buildings. You can find these mods on Nexus by looking at the requirement list, it shows mods that use that mod.
I am so going to combine those with the EFT-mod to make the gameplay crisp. That sounds awesome, thanks for the post
Looks sick. Whats the status bars mod?
The Wasteland Mod, comes with it's own Fallout inspired UI and game elements.
It is awesome, designed to be end game though (tier 5+) but you can dip your toes into it, just don't go to deep or else.
What would you judge to be the best mod(s) of all time? I'm going to consider a few factors:
00:07 - Ad Astra
00:44 - Sophisticated Backpacks
01:07 - Twilight Forest
01:40 - Iron Chests
02:05 - Traveler's titles
02:15 - Deeper & Darker
02:41 - Industrial Craft
03:05 - Applied Energistics 2
03:26 - L_Ender 's Cataclysm
03:51 - The Aeter
04:12 - Farmer's Delight
04:26 - Mowzie's Mobs
04:42 - Ice & Fire
05:06 - Create
05:45 - Botania
Do you agree with this list?
I would swap iron chests with danks, sophisticated storage or storage drawers(depending on what factor you value more) and instead of Ad Astra maybe advanced rocketry(I know a little outdated, but imo way cooler).

Buildcraft and Immersive Engineering
Lemme hear it. Can be objective or a personal opinion. No rules of size/content/purpose.
I remember trying to make my own pack before Forge existed.
I spent about 10 minutes reading about how to resolve conflicts between mods, and then gave up.
When you consider that FML and OreDictionary are also parts of Forge, I have to agree. Also don't forget that Forge is what does this stuff when you join a server. It was supposed to be in the official API, but it never happened.
Forge is truly the greatest mod.
EDIT: I stand corrected. Right in my screenshot it says that it is "Brandon's Core" that does this, not Forge. Oh well, I'm still impressed by Forge.
Buildcraft.
First mod that could move items from one spot to another and could pick up items. Completely revolutionized both modded and vanilla
Buildcraft is the mod that got me into Minecraft in the first place. Watching the Quarry run on an old Yogscast series (Tekkit or Voltz, I forget) tipped me over the edge into the "I have to play this game" zone.
It was Tekkit, Voltz didn't run BuildCraft. It did, however, give us... The Sjincident.
I agree. Not the most useful, but what it did at the time what revolutionary. Inspired almost every other major tech mod that came after.
Thaumcraft. No mod has immersed me so fully into it. It's really beautiful with by far the most gorgeous and well-done book, really amazing textures and models that to this day blow most mods away and just a really nice overreaching theme to the entire mod. And it all feels cohesive together with well-done mechanics that seamlessly interconnects every part of the mod. A lot of magic mods I've tried feel really confusing, unclear or some parts of the mod feel "one-up"py with super furnaces and end all armor sets, but all of Thaumcraft's mechanics and features always felt thematically "right" to me. I would suck Azanor's actual dick I could.
SAME!!!
When I first saw what thaumcraft could do, i rejoined minecraft instantly. Before i knew about it, i was mostly interested in other games but maaan! AAND its updated to 1.12!
Yeah Thaumcraft pretty much is minecraft for me.
JEI. Without its recipe viewers, modded Minecraft and new mods would be virtually impossible to get started in.
It's one of those mods that you don't even think of most of the time. It's just there in nearly every pack and you don't even realize how good it is until you no longer have it. It and its predecessor NEI (before JEI replaced it) are one of the first mods I add whenever I sit down to play Minecraft. The best part is that it's a client side mod so it even works on vanilla servers.
I found that out very recently. I was trying to add ProjectE to a pack to test something, then loaded it up and it didn't work. A few days later, I got super confused that GregBlock had added the Philospher Stone. And it had a default recipe??? No... I had just dropped ProjectE in the wrong folder. Makes the recipes show up client side but not work in an actual crafting table.
I'd lump NEI in there for earlier editions of minecraft (1.7 and earlier), along with any other similar mods.
A good while back I remember 1.12.2 being the version to play modded minecraft because most mods were available on it. What version is it now?
1.7.10, 1.12.2, 1.16.5, and 1.18.2 are the most popular atm. I suggest looking through available mods in each version and choosing the one with the mods you like. I personally prefer 1.16.5
I mean, everyone just plays modpacks, so pick a modpack you want to play and it will be on a certain minecraft version?
The vanilla content in most modpacks is incomparably insignificant relative to the modded content anyway. Just pick a modpack and play! Or, if you want a specific mod/version of a mod, pick based on that!
I feel like this was true until 1.18, but the new vanilla worldgen really makes modpacks feel different compared to previous versions.
Interesting, I have never played a 1.18+ modpack, perhaps you are right! It will certainly be interesting for me to see how it changes things, but for now there are a ton of 1.12 and 1.7.10 modpacks for me to play :)
That's fair, it has one of the largest repositories 9f mods in existence, many of them being extremely high quality.
Still barely any mods as cool as Reika mods or Witchery
1.16 was king for a bit there, but it actually looks like 1.18.2 is giving it a run for its money, and I am here for it!
We got back Botania, ProjectE, Tinkers, Mekanism, Immersive Engineering, RFTools, Thermal, BoP, BYG, Minecolonies, EnderStorage, Mystical Agriculture, Pam's Harvestcraft (kinda, some of the recipes i havent managed to get working, but i know the modules for it are still being ported over!), and even Ender IO is working on coming to 1.18.2!
I'm sure there are tons more I'm forgetting as I'm not in front of my PC atm, but if you haven't tried 1.18 modded, now is a great time to jump in! Valhelsia is a great kitchen sink style pack to check out if you wanna get a feel for what's put there. It does have create, but you can ignore it entirely (. . . On curseforge anyway, drama going on with other launchers and stuff, that I don't wanna get into because I'm trying to stay positive!)
I'm sure I'm missing some other greats, but I know that many of my 1.12 faves are in my packs for 1.18, and new mods are coming in that are pretty awesome on top of it like Corail Woodcutter (which I swear should just be a vanilla feature as it fits in so seamlessly)
Now if we could get Draconic Evolution & Thaumcraft on 1.18.2 I'd be a happy, happy girl!
>Now if we could get Draconic Evolution & Thaumcraft on 1.18.2 I'd be a happy, happy girl!
Same here. Thaumcraft is the big thing still binding me to 1.7.10, although there is no complete version of gregtech for newer versions either.
I feel you and I think the same that 1.18.2 will be the new mainversion since 1.19 features are already mostly backported via mods.
But on the other hand dungeons+ for example thinks he will just move on from 1.18.1 to 1.19 and I have seen a few others too.
It's sad in my eyes that so many ideas of Modifikations are split up on different versions/launchers and even mods/Plugins.
Tldr: I think 1.18.2 will be the new main version with backport mods.
Part of me hopes so! I still haven't actually played 1.19 outside of the snapshots. Kept getting excited by my favorite mods returning and making new modpacks!
