TL;DR Espinoza's Leather and Fox Creek Leather are highly recommended for quality motorcycle vests. Consider perforated leather or textile for hot climates like South Florida.
Recommended Brands
Espinoza's Leather is frequently mentioned as a top choice for motorcycle vests, especially in California. They offer customization options such as color stitching, collar and sleeve piping, and custom liners [2:1]
[2:4]. Fox Creek Leather is another brand praised for its durability and quality, with users reporting that their products withstand extensive use and even accidents
[2:10].
Material Considerations
When choosing a motorcycle vest, consider the material based on your climate. Perforated leather or textile can be advantageous in hot environments like South Florida, providing better airflow and comfort [2]. Espinoza's offers both leather and canvas options, which cater to different preferences and weather conditions
[2:6].
Customization and Fit
Customization is a significant factor for many riders when selecting a vest. Espinoza's Leather provides numerous ways to personalize your vest, ensuring it fits well and matches your style [2:1]. It's essential to try on various brands and models to find the best fit, as comfort and proper fit are crucial for safety and enjoyment
[3:6].
Additional Recommendations
For those interested in DIY projects, some users have shared experiences of making their own leather vests, emphasizing the versatility and personal satisfaction of creating custom gear [4:1]. Additionally, consider looking into brands that offer armor inserts for added protection, such as Corazzo, which has received positive feedback for its durability and protective features

was thinking the alpinestars GP Plus R V3 because i want a good jacket that’s going to last me a while and will increase my chances of not getting fatally injured in case of a crash. I’ll rather be safe than sorry
The Alpinestars GP Plus R V3 is a great choice for a safe and high-quality street motorcycle jacket. Here's why it's a good option and some additional safety considerations:

Recommendation:
The Alpinestars GP Plus R V3 is an excellent choice for a safe and durable street motorcycle jacket. However, before you buy any jacket, it's important to try it on to ensure a proper fit.
Here are some tips for finding a motorcycle jacket that fits well:
I hope this helps! Ride safe!
Airbag jacket is probably the safest - Rst have one, or alpinestars too (weirdly on sports bike shop some of the gp plus rv3s say they're airbag compatible, some don't?). I think triple A rating CE certification is the best, and ideally a full waist body zip, not 3/4, and matching trousers to zip to of course.
Just watched a fortnine clip about beginner gear and what was necessary. Jackets don't necessarily save lives (*according to him, statistically), but are good for saving skin... A back protector was his biggest recommendation as spinal injuries actually do have the potential to kill.
I think his list was boots first, then gloves and then a helmet... I wear all the gear all the time and tend to agree that a good protective jacket is worth it...
Have been riding about a fortnight. Have only got my helmet, gloves and just put in an order for boots.
Pants and jackets have been a struggle. I tried on my usual size pant they fit great. But found the armour to sit a little too low to protect the knees though. Armour also seems to slide in jackets I've noticed. Is this a thing?
No, try on lots of brands. Choose a product with a minimum of CE AA rating. Some have adjustable positions for pads, but some will just fit you better.
Do you keep the visor open or closed while you sleep?
Have you been saving that comment for a special occasion?
i thought this was funny
My brother in law sent me one of his videos, just got my bike back and looking for gear. He throws around the word statistically a lot. He said something like armour takes the KN force from 14 or something down to 6, but 4 is enough to break your bones so you may as well not bother. All I heard was 14 down to 6 and thought that could be a permanent disability reduced to a compound fracture, my in law is the type of guy who was looking for an excuse to not wear gear and he found one.
Yeah that video almost entirely mentions death statistics as if permanently fucking up your knee by not wearing good pants didn’t matter
Well I can tell my leather jacket seems to fit that description. It's the one I was wearing when I got hit by a car. Actually the jacket did better than me I just had to wash the blood of it me on the other hand had to have surgery on my wrist. It's a Fox Creek Leather. The jacket does have pockets on the inside for armour if you use that stuff
The best and safest jacket is the one you wear. Ask the 30 other jackets I've tried, I've bought/returned, and the others collecting dust. Research, research, research. Read the safety info (A-AAA abrasion rating, CE level 1-2, etc.) I've found the manufacturer's website can have better details. Read the reviews not just the "star rating". TRY THEM ON. If the jacket doesn't fit right it will not work right. If the jacket is uncomfortable you will not wear it. Ride safe.
Hey guys. Live in Hot South Florida and I want to buy a vest. Any suggestions on what brand to look into? Anything good from HD? Not sure what most MC’s use for their cuts. Is their any advantage to a perforated leather or textile? Any help would be greatly appreciated!
Yes, mass manufactured vest of overly processed Packistani yak hide is the best avaliable.
Sad that people today don't even know what quality leather is supposed to look or feel like.
Yea but if you’re newer and can’t commit to a $350+ cut, then this is the company I’d go with. Just watched my buddy go thru getting a new bike, definitely wasn’t going to be able to afford an Espinoza on top of a new lid and parts for the bike.
I’ve got a few of their vests and a jacket. Great value for the money.
In California Espinoza’s Leather makes reaaally nice vests. They are definitely in style here and a dyno bro + Chicano favorite. But you can’t hate on the quality.
Thanks I’ll check them out! Sounds right up my alley. I like quality. As they say buy once cry once.
If you don't find something you like there Bay vests are good too
this all day. espinozas is bad ass! they’ll custom make anything you can think of also.
Second for Espinoza’s, I just ordered my second vest from them. Get quality and service. They have a ton of ways to make them personalized from color stitching to the collar and sleeve piping and even stitching on the vest itself and custom liners. I can’t say enough about how great their quality is!
My canvas summer cut is made by them. A little short for a large but it’s built right. Love their stuff.
Fox Creek Leather.
I’ve got around 250k miles worth of weather on mine and it’s still great. It’s even been down once.
Wow that’s a testimony to the quality. Thanks!
What I’m rocking since last month. Not a ton of miles on it but Im liking it
When it comes to motorcycle jackets, a lot of ink is spilled over protectiveness, safety ratings, and what they mean. I'm not qualified to discuss that, and I won't be digging into the safety ratings today. But, jackets are fundamentally garments that you wear right? So I want to discuss a few traits that I think are terrible on motorcycle jackets, if you see a jacket that has one or multiple of the following traits, I think it is a good idea to stay far, far away.

Motorcycle Jackets with Velcro cuffs
There are plenty of jackets that seem to sell well with Velcro cuffs, like the Rev'it Eclipse. In my experience, everyone who owns a jacket like this complains about two things - The Velcro comes apart at high speeds (the wind is blasting it straight up), and that it constantly gets caught on your gloves if you wear mesh or textile gloves.

Semi perforated jackets with nonadjustable ventilation
My Dainese Mike 2 belongs in the hall of shame with this one - The arms are heavily perforated, while there's not a single vent or perforation on the torso. This means that you can't wear it on hot days because there's no ventilation on your torso and you can't wear it on cold days as your arms are getting a ton of air. Plenty of jackets are like this, and it effectively makes them a "no season" jacket. Either make the jacket fully ventilated (and thus a summer jacket), or fully not ventilated (thus a cold weather jacket), or hide the ventilation behind zippers!

Vest Thermal Linings
Some motorcycle gear companies seem to believe that your arms don't get cold. So they make jackets with thermal linings that a vest, no arm coverage. Yeah, no, those thermal linings are terrible. On a cold day, you'd put on a sweater under your jacket, and now your chest is too warm and bulky! Either full sleeved thermal linings or no thermal lining!

Waterproof liners that go under your jacket.
Let's say you are riding, and you suddenly hit some rain. If your jacket has a waterproof liner that goes under your jacket, you need to pull over, reach into your saddle bag or something to grab the liner, take your jacket off, zip the liner in, and put your jacket back on. By which time there's a good chance you're soaked already. Oh, and the waterproof liner on the inside means that your jacket will continue to soak up water making it even heavier and bulkier, and unless the pockets are waterproof the stuff in your pocket will get soaked.

Hoods that cannot be removed.
I personally don't know why people love riding hoodies, but if you're going to buy one, make sure the hood can be zipped off. Plenty of motorcycle hoodies have irremovable hoods, which means that when you tuck, the only thing that hood is going to do is act like a sail to pull you off the bike. At best that hood just flaps loudly and acts annoying. Oh, and if you get a riding hoodie, make sure that it doesn't have draw string for the hood - All that does is flap in the wind and hit you in the face.

Black mesh jackets
If the point of a mesh jacket is to get airflow in to cool you off on a hot day, a black mesh jacket is perhaps the worst type of mesh jacket you can buy. Sure, the air feels nice while you're moving, but the moment you stop or hit stop and go traffic, the heavy nylon sliding areas on the outside of your arms and your shoulders are just going to soak in heat. Get one in a color that isn't black, and you'll feel a lot cooler.

Waterproof jackets with non-waterproof zippers
I get why manufactures do this - Waterproof zippers are very expensive. But seriously, what is the point of waterproofing your jacket if you and the stuff in your pockets are getting soaked anyways because all the water leaked in through the zipper?
Yeah YMMV i have an AlpineStars black jacket with mesh panels, velcro cuffs and a liner, all seems fine.
If its pouring rain, I don't think you can realistically expect any jacket to hold up for too long. Maybe if you have one piece like Aerostitch, but otherwise you're gonna get wet. The waterproof liner is convenient though, I just use it as a windproof liner on colder days, but don't expect it to save me from any serious rain.
Yup, I have an Olympia armored mesh jacket and the waterproof liner doubles as a windproof liner if it's cooler than 65. I love it. And there's so much airflow without it that you can comfortably ride well into the 90s. These days I wear my Alpinestars perforated leather track jacket mostly for the additional protection, but the Olympia textile jacket is truly 4 season if you use a heated jacket under it.
Agreed, my AlpineStars mesh is awesome, it has perforated sleeves and velcro cuffs, I’ve never had an issue with it. This post seems like a lot of opinion of the OP, which is fine, but people should not take this as fact or steer away from a product because of it.
Do your own research people. I tend to find the good brands like AlpineStars, RevIt and Dianese make good products, other good brands as well.
Never had any issue with Velcro cuffs. I’ve had alpine stars and Joe rocket jackets and never had it come undone at any speed.
Alpine star jacket is always been ok for me never had an issue.
Hmm I don’t have any issue with the Velcro sleeves on my Revit wind 2. Love that jacket.
I constantly take the highway on my motorcycle and have used the Rev’it eclipse throughout the summer. I’ve had zero issues with the Velcro sleeves.
The cuffs on my Eclipse kept coming open so I replaced the velcro on the flap with some 3M adhesive velcro, which solved the issue.
The best jacket is the one you actually wear. No point buying a $100 steal of a deal if it’s uncomfortable or you feel super dorky and never wear it.
tank tops. they don't provide enough protection no matter how good your gunz look with those sweet bicep-wrapping barb wire tattoos.
I once (once) rode with a group who showed up in a little as a tank top.
One dude however, in pretty good shape took it off so he could flex while doing wheelies down the highway.
They were decent at wheelies and dodging cars, but shit at corners.
I was lonely in my riding, and young, so I didn't immediately leave. However after the police set a trap (full on 2 cops blocking the road in front and 2 boxing us in behind) and detained us all for a while, I came to my senses and we went our separate ways
No, no, I AM impressed - i don't want us road rashing our sweet biceps just for the glory and to make the ladies want us (more).
Iv never really been a best guy but when I saw this it may have changed my view.
The leather collar is supple and comfy around the neck, plenty of pockets for my nick naks, and the weather wool is something else.
I LOVE my full patriot jacket but when it’s too much, this will be just right.
Thank you the Nicks team.
I have the same vest in small, slightly used. Willing to sell it if someone is interested
The vest looks amazing! I really love a good vest. I missed out on these when they did this run. Maybe I can catch the next one. I live in Texas, so I can get great use from a vest! Hoodie under it when it's cold. Vest only when it's cool. It's really a versatile option that works very well for Texas weather.
I'm in the process... well I started making a full leather vest a while back. I haven't worked on it in a while. But all the pieces are cut and ready. I've stated sewing it. Just need to finish sewing it. It's Natural Waxed Flesh, with pig skin lined pockets for some soft warmth. Hopefully I'll have it ready for fall.
Woah, that DIY vest sounds awesome, whenever you finish it, throw it in with a couple pictures of your waxed flesh Mocs! 🙏
Heck yeah. I'll share when it's done. It might be a while though lol.
One thing I’d love to see in the future, maybe a leather vest with the plaid Heat Straps hard wear wool
That looks good. I’m waiting for something in monarch than I’ll get it
Is this new? I think i missed the boat on these
This is not new, I was fortunate enough to get my hand one stragler looking to be adopted
I no longer ride, so I don’t need this jacket anymore. These jackets are SUPER high quality and this one has a lot of life left in it. I once got run off the road by a terrible SUV driver and went into a 25 ft slide and stood up unscathed - me AND the jacket. The minor discoloration inside is just from all my time riding in torrential rain. It’ll probably wash out.

OMG super interested! It's so hard to find a good looking motorcycle jacket for women. And I'm a size medium! Just DM'd you.
I understand bull riding is dangerous and no vest is going to make it “safe.” There’s always going to be risk, and I accept that. But I’m looking for the vest that offers the most protection possible—something that prioritizes safety over mobility or comfort.
I don’t care if it’s heavy, stiff, or overbuilt. I just want to know what gear gives you the best shot at walking away from a wreck. Thanks!
RR
Crooked horn in my opinion I have taken several hookings and stompings and never had anything worse than getting the wind knocked out of me.
I know they’re meant to be for off-roading but they’re my now go to for street riding especially if it a hot day
What's a good alternative for riding on a really hot day?
Your best bet is an all mesh jacket. If you're looking for cheaper options, scorpion has a decent one. I think it's called the Exo or something.
Anything with good ventilation. Heck I'm fine in leather as long as we're moving along.
when I used to commute, I would put these frozen ice blanket things (a sheet of individual frozen cells of gel) on my chest, inside my jacket. it was very effective for about 15-30mins. if it's really hot I would use one on my neck too, but that gives you a brain freeze real quick in the beginning.
Rev'it made a vest and neck set too but the cells were too small and thawed too quickly to be effective.
you can also look into fan jackets that Japanese construction workers wear. Makita makes them, the fans blow air into the thin jacket and keep air circulating inside. I'm sure you could just buy some battery fans and stick em in your riding jacket.
Full set of gear.
They dont do shit for slides. Its impact protection, not slide protection. If you wear a slide-resistant hoodie over it, it'll be fine.
A slide resistant hoodie? So a jacket. Hoodies are so loose they will ride.
You can get motorcycle hoodies with abrasion resistance and even elbow shoulder and back protection.
There's actual motorcycle hoodies, mate. Made with kevlar etc. They look like hoodies but are more tight around your body and provide excellent sliding protection
They will pretty much act like a somewhat airbag, they will help with the fall/impact. Then the leather jacket will do the work for/during the slide. Together they are good, but this alone, without a jacket is pretty much useless on the street, unless you’re planning on jumping from one rooftop to the other on your CBR in a residential area
Mx
For offroading. They're primarily concerned with impact resistance, which is most of your issue on dirt. On the street, you're more worried about abrasion resistance, though impact still plays a part for sure.
This vest will help you in a fall, but it won't help you much if any in a slide.
I
Castelli Espresso Vest if you want pockets on it. Tons of color options as well.
Big fan of the voler wind vest
normal version, every color might you need
3 large expanding pockets that don't sag
Dwr on front vented strech material on the back
Had one for 3 years, very durable after getting dirty dirty with mud an grim
Ornot's packs down small. Two-way zip. Good.
Tried on the Cafe Du Cycliste Edith gilet, loved how light and packable it was
I like my MAAP Draft Team vest
Been wearing this vest for a few years, it’s been through some great shows and events with me, a real champion.
That Lovejoy Division patch is sick
Leechpit in Old Colorado City near Colorado Springs. I stop in whenever I’m in that part of the country.
Is that The Thing back patch an old shirt? I want to make a Thing themed battle jacket next. It’s my favorite horror movie ever made.
Same! And yes, from Fright Rags, was a favorite shirt and now I always wear it! sometimes some of the horror shirt sites will have closeout for X-Small and XXXX-Big shirts for discounts, perfect for patch’s.
Yooo where’d you get that gas station boner pills patch?
Picked that one up when they played with X-Cops and Belushi Speedball early this year, amazing show. Looking forward to seeing them this year at Muddy Roots!
I’m jealous! The belushi speedball patch kicks ass too! My buddy is going to muddy roots I might have to see if he can pick one up for me 😁
Hahaha I was about to ask too
Skinny Puppy! Nice!
Gas station boner pills 🔥

Key Considerations for Choosing the Best Motorcycle Vest:
Material: Look for durable materials like leather or high-quality textile. Leather offers great abrasion resistance, while textile vests can be lighter and often come with weatherproofing.
Safety Features: Ensure the vest has built-in armor or pockets for armor inserts (shoulders, back, and elbows) to provide protection in case of an accident.
Visibility: Consider vests with reflective strips or bright colors to enhance visibility, especially for night riding.
Fit and Comfort: Choose a vest that fits well and allows for freedom of movement. Adjustable straps or side laces can help achieve a better fit.
Storage: Look for vests with pockets for storing essentials like your phone, wallet, and tools. Zippered pockets are preferable for security.
Style: While safety is paramount, you’ll also want a vest that matches your personal style. There are many designs available, from classic leather to modern textile options.
Recommendations:
For Leather: The Harley-Davidson Men's Leather Vest is a classic choice, known for its durability and timeless style. It often includes pockets and armor compatibility.
For Textile: The Joe Rocket Atomic 5.0 Vest is a great option, featuring a lightweight design, CE-approved armor pockets, and reflective accents for visibility.
For Visibility: The Milwaukee Leather Men’s Reflective Vest offers excellent visibility with reflective strips and is made from durable materials.
Choosing the right vest depends on your riding style, climate, and personal preferences, so consider trying on a few options to find the best fit for you.
