TL;DR
Natural vs. Synthetic Ingredients
The term "natural" in perfumes can be misleading, as even natural perfumes are composed of distilled aromachemicals [2:2]. Some users argue that synthetics can be more sustainable and less allergenic than natural components
[2:9],
[3:7]. Moreover, natural ingredients can sometimes lead to adverse reactions due to the complex mix of molecules they contain
[2:4],
[3:6].
Recommended Brands
Several brands are recommended for their use of natural ingredients. Hiram Green, For Strange Women, and Wild Coast Perfumery are noted for their natural fragrances [2:1]. Acqua di Parma uses natural ingredients but may not have the best longevity
[3:2]. The Guerlain Aqua Allegoria line also offers photorealistic fruit scents, although they may require frequent reapplication
[4:2],
[3:12].
Fruit and Floral Scents
For those seeking fruity or floral scents, Pulp by Byredo and Debaser by D.S. & Durga are recommended for their fresh fruit aromas [4:1]. Guerlain's Aqua Allegoria line, particularly Pamplelune, is praised for its juicy grapefruit scent
[4:4]. ELDO's I Am Trash offers a unique overripe fruit fragrance
[4:6].
Natural Perfume Companies
Splash of Scent is a new company offering 100% natural perfumes [5:1]. Other companies mentioned include Midnight Alchemy, Solstice Scents' natural line, and Providence Perfume
[5]. These brands cater to individuals who prefer natural essence/resins/oils/herbs with minimal synthetic additives.
When choosing natural perfumes, it's important to consider personal sensitivities and preferences, as well as the potential trade-offs in terms of longevity and complexity of scent.
Un Jardin Sur le Toit smells so natural. Huge fan. It’s like apples, pears, and grass.
Le Labo - Rose 31 , to me it smells like the stems of fresh roses, such a great fragrance.
any of my ateliers. pacific lime, bergamot soleil, trefle pur, ORANGE SANGUINE, cedrat envirante. reiner oud rain smells like I'm in a jungle by a fireplace surrounded by woods and exotic fruits
Orange Sanguine is just pure zest, smells just like a freshly opened tangerine/clementine/orange. The best!
absolutely! I can buy a 200 ml for $170 and get a free of my choice 30 ml atelier travel spray. tempting :P my fav atelier is pacific lime and santal carmin, though. I'd get the 200 ml pacific lime if they had it and add the orange sanguine 30 ml - would be perfect
Clementine California too!!!
waiting on that there sample still! :D
Un Jardin Sur Le Toit is great! Mine would probably be Fico di Amalfi—fresh cut figs right under the tree.
Un jardin sur le nil - Hermés
I love this whole garden collection from Hermés. I keep that one in my desk at work because it's very pretty and fresh.
I don't own it, but Diptyque Philosykos is definitely wins for the most natural smelling fragrance I've sampled. It smells exactly like fresh figs.
Wondering if people on this reddit think about perfumes made with natural ingredients VS isolates. Meaning perfumes without all the synthetics or additives. Do you have any favorites? Do folks care about this here?
"Natural" is fairly meaningless in the context of perfume. These "natural" perfumes are typically made with essential oils, which are distilled aromachemicals. It's still made of chemicals.
(Also, many "natural" brands use synthetic aromachemicals anyway, so.)
Or when they use "natural isolates" for aldehydes, lactones etc. Why not just use aromachemicals at that point. Pointless greenwashing.
In some rare cases molecules like benzyl acetate, phenylethanol etc. extracted from botanical sources are rumored to smell objectively better, which I understand if they actually compared the two and objectively chose the better product.
Of course, but brands that aren't marketed as "natural" may do that too. I think many brands use a combination of natural and synthetic ingredients.
It's still made of chemicals.
Everything is made of chemicals!
Gasp!
You're more likely to have an adverse reaction to naturals than to synthetics, by virtue of the fact that naturals contain many more different molecules.
In this context, "additive" has no meaning. Everything is "added" to a perfume—it's not like food where you can bake a loaf of bread with or without preservatives, dough conditioners, etc.
Hard agree here. Essential oils are the worst. They’re untested and not studied.
Whereas widely accepted fragrance additives have been studied a lot. The IFRA https://ifrafragrance.org/ puts out detailed information about the industry and sets standards. You’re better off with traditional fragrances.
The Perfect Scent by Chandler Burr discusses this and is worth a read for anyone into perfume. I won’t duplicate points already made but will add that synthetics can sometimes be more sustainable than “natural” sources.
almost always more sustainable and less allergenic too
It's just a marketing gimmick called "greenwashing", and you're much safer with perfumes that have passed the VERY strict regulations of the IFRA.
I'm generally skeptical of fragrances that completely swear off any synthetics or isolated aromachemicals. Both synthetics and natural ingredients have their pros and cons and from an aesthetics perspective it usually feels like the perfumer is limited from using the full range of techniques for pretty dubious reasons. All natural fragrances on a whole tend to be short lasting (less of an issue for me), and have a tendency to smell heavy and "muddy" to me. That being said, I have some fragrances I like from Hiram Green, For Strange Women, and Wild Coast Perfumery and I think those houses are all natural.
In general though, I prefer houses that use the optimal ingredient for the effect they are going for, regardless of its origins, as long as it is safe and ethically produced.
The title says it all? What brand truly cares and uses natural ingredients?
Acqua di Parma is known for using natural ingredients. A lot of their fragrances also don’t have the best performance, but they smell wonderful.
They may use some natural materials, sure. The photorealistic top note effects (healthy citral+limonene dose) and "light, airy freshness" (IES, hedione and musk overdose) comes from very clever blending and modern perfumery principles. Nothing wrong with that at all, but not strictly natural and requires heavy synthetic involvement. Natural extracts tend to have stronger terpenic/phenolic aspects which are not as desirable these days.
I don’t disagree with that. I don’t know of any modern fragrance that is totally natural. Do you?
Yeah they have some of the most photorealistic fruit scents, I just reapply every few hours lol
Without doubt. They do have a few with good performance. Their Signatures of the Sun and Note di Colonia lines have some good performance. Their Oud uses real oud and performs very well!
If you are sensitive or you're concerned about allergies, you should know that natural components are far more likely to give you issues than synthetics.
Also important to note that the fragrances that have a high degree of naturals are not necessarily more pleasant to smell. They're heavier, denser, a lot less legible.
They're heavier, denser, a lot less legible.
This. They're harder to get right, and the effortless "lightness" and "negative space" we enjoy in modern perfumery is very, very hard to achieve with 100% botanicals.
Many 100% botanical people game the system by using "fractionated extracts" which are basically aromachemicals but tediously extracted from plant extracts rather than through other industrial means (often petrochemicals). The environmental benefits are dubious at best, but so is the whole premise of 100% botanical perfumery.
Exactly, in some cases, synthetics are more “caring” (using synthetic vs real civet or animal musks, not using endangered trees or unsafe materials), in others, naturals are (supporting small growers by using natural rose vs synthetic). Some “natural” “clean” brands are cash grabs, whereas others are focused on artistry.
Safety is also a major issue with many naturals. Plants will ABSOLUTELY poison you, irritate you, give you cancer or chemical burns. Essential oils are the result of an inter-species evolutionary arms race going back millions of years.
People like to see "contains natural lemon oil" but are terrified of big words like "1-methyl-4-(1-methylethenyl)-cyclohexene" which is just the IUPAC name for limonene, which is just one of DOZENS of constituents of cold pressed lemon oil. And lemon is not even one of the more complicated botanical extracts.
Greenwashing is rooted in dishonesty, intellectual laziness, superstition and ignorance.
I will only address the natural ingredient part of the question; https://hiramgreen.com/
If they only used natural ingredients it wouldn’t last very long
Scarcity is one of the problems, and its intertwined with ethics. Many of the highly-prized natural perfume ingredients have been used by non-European/American and indigenous people for centuries, then perfumery raided the natural habitats and exploited the people. Scarcity goes beyond "hard to get" when you're talking about things like Mysore sandalwood and oud that have cultural and religious significance.
Other big problems with naturals:
So, looking at a brand that uses all natural ingredients and assuming that they "care" is a funny way to look at it. For many of them it's purely a marketing angle based on misinformation and fear-mongering, they don't "care" about chemistry best practices, environmentalism, sustainability, or preventing harm to the people who produce the raw materials.
hello im looking for a perfume that has a natural scent which perfume you know most smells like a fresh fruit? i tried incanto charms but it was synthetic
Guerlain Aqua line. Pamplelune is juicy fresh grapefruit.
Yep any of the Aqua Allegorias. They’re my favourite but they don’t last.
Magic Hour by Vivamor Parfums
Top: Piña Colada, Exotic Fruits, Ginger
Mid: Rum, Cinnamon and Guatemalan Cardamom
Base: Moss and Amber
Erba pura?
Came here to say this lol
ELDO - I Am Trash is pure overripe fruit to me.
Pulp by Byredo smells like mashed up, ripe fruit and berries. Debaser by D.S. & Durga smells like fresh figs.
Hi all! I was hoping for some recommendations on your favorite natural perfume companies.
Ones I have tried are-
Midnight Alchemy
Solstice Scents- natural line
Providence Perfume
I may even be okay with some that use mostly natural essence/resins/oils/herbs with some synthetic thrown in.
Regular perfume, even indie ones which are full on synthetic end up making me have a terrible headache/nausea. Its frustrating lol!!
My favorite notes/perfumes are:
Vanilla (gourmand, not musk)
Rose
Gourmand
Feminine Incense scents ( not too harsh, pulling masculine cologne scented)
marshmallow
campfire
florals( as long as they arent too perfumy, with musk/powder, but are more real smelling)
cocoa/chocolate
white chocolate
pine
woodsmoke
This makes it hard to find more natural types since I love the gourmand vs powdery/musky/mens cologne type incense
But alas, I am still searching! :)
Id love to find a company on etsy as I have a ton of giftcards on there, but am open to anywhere!
Thank you so much for reading!
You can try thins one as well - new company, and 100% natural: Splash of Scent, on Etsy or at https://splashofscent.com
Cheers!

I did a similar post yesterday, but with celebrity perfumes. It was so fun and I loved seeing all the perfume picks people had, especially with perfumes I’ve never heard of! I always find it fun coming up with “top # lists” for perfumes, and I LOVE hearing others share their passions through fragrances.
The theme for this thread is: what’re your top 7 favorite designer perfumes?
Not counting Guerlain, Tom ford, or any of the prive designer lines:
Chloe Nomade
Givenchy Extravagance d’Amarige (long discontinued)
Givenchy L’Interdit rouge ultime
D&G Devotion Intense
Valentino DBIR Extradose
Alien (original formulation)
Bvlgari The Au Blanc
Chloe nomade is 😗👌 I only bought a 10ml because I couldn’t test it IRL, but I didn’t realise how much I loved sandalwood until I smelt nomade. It was like a spiritual awakening lol.
Chloe Nomade is my signature scent, I love it so much
This is fun! Love seeing everyone’s picks. Mine are:
Edit: Focused on designer frags accessible at Sephora/Ulta (except for Narciso Rodriquez 🥲) & didn’t include any private / higher end lines!
How is soleil neige? Always wanted it but could never find a sample
Hard to explain but to me it smells very clean, a bit musky, a bit floral, like a body lotion you’d find at a very nice hotel. I would not consider this a “warm” perfume, there is something cold about it. If you’re US based, it should be at most Sephoras!
The Flowerbomb twice is iconic
It’s just so good I couldn’t stop thinking about it
Dior Hypnotic Poison
Versace Crystal Noir
Burberry Goddess
JPG Scandal Le Parfum
YSL Libre Intense
CH Good Girl Supreme
YSL Black Opium Le Parfum

I hate chemical smelling/synthetic fragrances since I get a headache from them so I wanted ones that are the opposite.
Hiram Green does all natural perfumery. Not cheap but excellent.
If you can figure out which notes bother you, that would help. I also get headaches from certain smells. The “fresh” smells in the detergent aisle of the grocery store can give me a migraine, and I cant go anywhere near a bath & body works!
Try Jo Malone
Do you have any examples of offending fragrances for reference?
Azzaro Wanted and Montblanc Legend are definite no nos for me
Perhaps it isn’t so much synthetic notes that you hate and more so a specific ingredient (tuberose, ambroxan, patchouli, etc.). You should check out the notes from the fragrances you can’t stand to find out common themes. Nowadays most fragrances are made with either a blend of synthetic and natural ingredients or only synthetics. They are often such high quality that you wouldn’t be able to recognize that chemists reproduced the chemical synthetically.
Well in general you are going to get more naturals the more expensive you go, they are more expensive raw materials so you aren't typically going to find a high amount in typical designer type fragrances. Also some skilled perfumers can make very natural smelling accords using aromachemicals.
Exactly. And even then, its up to your nose to be able to decipher those notes because some notes you could be anosmic to.
I want a really unique fruity ish fragrance that doesn’t smell like a fragrance if that makes sense, but rather like a natural smell. And not tooo expensive either. Thanks for the recommendations!
Mandarino by Laboratorio Olfactivo - Orange
Summer of 84 by Kerosene - Grapefruit
Amethyst by Lalique smells like cold, tart purple berries, not at all sweet!
Thank you!! It sounds amazing :) and pretty affordable too
Clean Sparkling Sugar is peachy and natural to me
This or Skin. Skin is less sweet IMO
White Peaches by Shay and Blue
Nature Insolente - Maison Matine
Pretty citrus melon that is light and sits close to the skin. Lacks staying power but also doesn’t cost a fortune.
Alot of people dont like fragrance, and I kind of understand. What smells natural and unintrusive one you own?
Philosykos smells like a fig tree. 🌳
Philosykos is my answer as well. It's light and natural-smelling.
I love the smell but it only lasts 1 hour on me :( sad
Oh no 🫠 The EdT doesn’t last on me either, but the EdP luckily lasts around 5ish hours
This is one of the only perfumes I can’t find a tester on to sample 😭
Terre de Hermes smells like I rolled around in a desert eating citrus fruits and a some point light a fire
Diptyque Eau Rose EDT. Smells like rose, a light and kind of watery scent.
I love this perfume! Wish that it was more affordable though lol
It is expensive, but there’s also a 50ml, which is what I got!
I have a perfume made entirely from a 60yr old Mysore Sandalwood oil. It’s something you use very sparingly and it smells like heaven. Hits every note a natural Sandalwood should.
It’s called Santa Maria from Startup Aromas. And it’s sold out.
Nice. Indian sandalwood is the best in the world.
I don’t know own any bottle of Diptyque but I find most or at least half of their offerings are natural smelling in the sense that they smell very earthy, leafy, alive and green

Key Considerations for Choosing Natural Perfumes:
Ingredients: Look for perfumes made from natural essential oils, botanical extracts, and organic ingredients. Avoid synthetic fragrances and harmful chemicals.
Scent Profile: Natural perfumes often have unique and complex scent profiles. Consider what notes you enjoy (floral, woody, citrus, etc.) and explore brands that specialize in those.
Longevity: Natural perfumes may not last as long as synthetic ones. Check reviews for longevity and consider layering with unscented lotions to enhance the scent.
Brand Transparency: Choose brands that are transparent about their sourcing and production processes. Look for certifications like organic or cruelty-free.
Packaging: Eco-friendly packaging is a plus. Many natural perfume brands focus on sustainability, so consider brands that use recyclable or biodegradable materials.
Recommendations:
Herbivore Botanicals: Known for their clean ingredients and beautiful scents, their "Citrine" and "Jasmine" perfumes are popular choices.
Lurk: Offers a range of natural perfumes with unique scent combinations. Their "Scent 01" is a favorite for its fresh and earthy notes.
Skylar: This brand provides a variety of light and fresh scents, with options like "Coconut Cove" and "Vanilla Sky" that are well-loved.
Aether: Their "Aether" line features complex, layered scents that are both unique and long-lasting, made with high-quality natural ingredients.
Choosing a natural perfume can be a delightful experience, as it often reflects personal style and values. Don't hesitate to sample a few to find the scent that resonates with you!
