What Redditors are Saying

Best Perfumes for Sensitive Skin

TL;DR Opt for perfume oils, solid perfumes, and brands known for lighter scents like Jo Malone or Diptyque.

Perfume Oils and Solid Perfumes

For individuals with sensitive skin, perfume oils and solid perfumes are often recommended as they tend to be less irritating than traditional alcohol-based sprays. These alternatives can provide a softer scent experience that is less likely to trigger allergic reactions or headaches [5:1], [5:4]. Brands like Kuumba Made offer fragrance oils in various scents, such as Persian Garden and Tunisian Patchouli, which may appeal to those who enjoy woody or floral notes [5:7].

Brands Known for Light Scents

Jo Malone is frequently mentioned as a brand suitable for sensitive noses due to its light and refreshing fragrances. Popular choices include Orange Blossom, Mimosa and Cardamom, and Wild Bluebell, which are known for their subtle sillage [1:1], [1:3]. Diptyque is another brand praised for its deft blending of scents, making it wearable even for those prone to headaches from stronger fragrances [1:4].

Specific Recommendations

Several specific perfumes were highlighted across discussions for their suitability for sensitive skin and noses. Philosophy Pure Grace EDT is noted for its clean and light scent [1:5]. "Not A Perfume" by Juliette Has a Gun is designed specifically for individuals who experience headaches from strong scents [2:5]. Chloe EDP is also recommended as a safe choice for those with sensitivity issues [5:2].

Alternative Formulations

Exploring alternative formulations, such as those without alcohol, can be beneficial. Dior offers some newer perfumes without alcohol, such as the Miss Dior Mini Miss solid perfume, which might be worth trying [5:5]. Additionally, Lush's solid perfumes, like Goddess and Karma, provide options with unique scent profiles that could suit sensitive individuals [5:7].

General Tips

If you have sensitive skin, consider applying perfumes to clothing instead of directly on the skin to minimize irritation [3:2]. It's also helpful to test different formulas and concentrations, as what bothers one person might not affect another [5:3].

ORIGINAL POST

Hey yall! I am looking for a new everyday scent that’s not too strong as I am very sensitive to smells and develop migraines from them.

I can’t even go to the store to try them or I’ll be laid out for a whole day.

I love Chanel No.5 and wear it on special occasions (just a dab on the back of my neck, otherwise I’ll get a migraine).

I am looking for something light and refreshing to put on everyday.

Have you sampled any Diptique? They’re typically pretty light soft skin scents, especially the EDTs.

No_Nefariousness2513 · 2 months ago

I agree, fragrances often cause me headaches but Diptyque blends scents so deftly that somehow I can wear the florals and patchoulis I used to avoid.

I haven’t! I’ll look into the EDTs, thank you!

Try Jo Malone, they were designed for sensitive noses! My favorite is Orange Blossom, but I also love Mimosa and Cardamom. I'm not a fan of the English pear and freesia, wood sage and sea salt, or nectarine blossom and honey.

I also really enjoy Rosie by Rosie Jane and wear it when my other perfumes become too much for my nose. It's subtle but sweet and lasts all day for me!

I hope you find something, OP!

I immediately thought Jo Malone, too. I love Wild Bluebell — it stays pretty close to the skin in terms of sillage, and I can’t stop pulling my wrist up to my nose to get extra sniffs.

And I’ll also offer another vote in favor of Orange Blossom.

Do you think you would do better with a skin scent? Something that usually smells a bit musky and like your skin but better, sitting close to the skin or would you prefer to stay floral?

I like musky scents!! I prefer floral for fancy occasions and more clean / fresh / natural for everyday

If you’d like to try some skin scents, I just got back from a fragrance testing spree at Sephora! Some people love Juliette Has a Gun Not A Perfume. It’s a single molecule scent. I personally hate it, but it has a huge cult following. It’s very polarizing, it either works with you or it doesn’t. If you do like it, you might also enjoy their Pear Inc, which is essentially the pear version of it.

I expected to dislike Glossier You because of how I felt about Not A Perfume, but surprisingly, I loved it. It was like a skin scent with the slightest hint of fruit without being sweet. I was also pleasantly surprised by Phlur Missing Person. I’d describe it as an almost nonexistent scent in the best way possible, but some people are anosmic to it. I can’t wait to try that one on skin!!

Clean Reserve Skin was slightly sweeter and more powdery than the others. Powdery is not for me. And My Burberry Blush is a fruity floral, but it was very soft and gentle, I imagine it would sit very close to the skin as well.

I can’t wait for my next batch of Lucky Scent samples to arrive! I have some other skin scents there as well. =)

Perfume suggestions for someone with a sensitive nose?

Posted by [deleted] · in r/beauty · 1 year ago

I’m completely new to the world of fragrances and have been thinking of buying a discovery set to dabble into.. but I have a sensitive nose. I tend to get headaches from candles, laundry detergent, dryer sheets, bath salts, etc. I think that I would enjoy something that is light, earthy, or citrusy. Maybe floral as well as long as it’s not too strong. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated :)

If you like masculine leaning scents I really enjoy acqua colonia, wakening woods of scandinavia! It’s fresh, earthy and a bit spicy. It’s a cologne so it’s not too strong and it’s quite affordable.

i recently put two&two together that my favorite perfume was causing a slight allergic reaction for me & as I just finished it I am hoping some of yall have good recommendations on what might work better for sensitive skin? I don't know what specific ingredients my last one was other than synthetic oils & no alcohol because it was in arabic.

Also if anyone has just general perfume recommendations similar to these notes that would be amazing!

Perfume sensitivity and favorite perfumes

Posted by Seeker_Of_Self · in r/FemFragLab · 4 months ago

Hello everyone,

I suffer from some sort of scent sensitivity, and I’m not sure what exactly in perfume formulations triggers it. I suspect alcohol content, but would love some insight if you have any. I would usually buy a perfume, love it for a couple of weeks and then it would start giving me headaches. It’s sad.

Having said that, two perfumes were an exception for a long time. Dior Purple Oud and Glossier You the OG formula.

Which brings me to the recommendation request. If these two are my favorite perfumes, which other perfumes would you suggest for me?

Kayali Yum Boujee Marshmallow did that to me. I got through maybe 2mL of a 10mL bottle before I started getting itchy throat and sinus pain. I find perfume oils to be the least irritating. I’ve gotten roller balls from Nemat and can wear Amber and Vanilla Musk. Extrait and EDP work for me, but lower concentrations like body spray and EDT are dicey. All that to say try different formulas and see how they work for you. It’s hard to give recommendations because what bothers me might not bother you, and vice versa.

2 upvotes on reddit
Seeker_Of_Self · OP · 4 months ago

Actually I’m the same. Perfume oils are the least irritating and body sprays like the ones from bath and bodyworks smell rancid to me. That’s why I’m guessing alcohol is the reason.

It’s funny because I’ve been using a BBW body spray recently. I just spray on my forearm with the nozzle pointed towards my wrist, and I keep it away from my face. I haven’t had issues. I wonder if I was inhaling too much of it before.

Someone else mentioned perfume oils. Maybe you could try solid perfumes as well? The ones I've tried are usually very softly scented. As long as your skin isn't sensitive to fragrance. I don't have fragrance allergies, but I'm sensitive to smells and can easily become overwhelmed by strong scents.

Try Kuumba Made fragrance oils!! A million lovely scents and they project pretty well for oils. Try Persian Garden since you like You OG and Tunisian Patchouli is woody with orange since you like Purple Oud.

You could also try Lush solid perfume. Maybe Goddess (oudh and jasmine) or Karma (another orange patchouli).

Indie perfumes for sensitive skin?

Posted by lilacwishbone · in r/Indiemakeupandmore · 7 years ago

Hey, my skin is quite dry and sensitive. I have no allergies, but it just doesn't take much for my skin so scream at me. I therefore don't really wear a lot of perfume, and the only ones I do own are leftovers from free samples, haha. I do sometimes wish I wore perfume, though. Is it even possible to find a scent which is ok for sensitive skin? Sidenote, I absolutely cannot stand the smell of coconut.

I have really sensitive skin but the only perfume oils I ever have trouble with are ones with a lot of spice like cinnamon and anything with coconut oil in it will break me out. I avoid putting perfume behind my ears and on most of my neck, too, but my lower arms are usually fine.

A lot of brands will warn which perfumes contain ingredients that may cause irritation, too. I avoid those in bath products for sure but can usually wear the perfume so long as I'm careful not to apply too much or right out of the shower.

Welcome! I'm not sure exactly what you are sensitive to but you can also wear perfume on your hair where it won't be touching your skin, in a scent locket, or on your clothing. Just keep in mind not all perfumes stain, but some can.

3 upvotes on reddit
Spitfire_Elspeth · 7 years ago

Unfortunately, as a fellow sensitive skin indie perfume wearer, it's basically trial and error. In my case, I've determined that specific scent ingredients will irritate my skin. Cinnamon and other spices are a pretty common skin irritant, and a lot of fall spice/"pumpkin spice" scents will leave red welts on my skin (BPAL's Bengal and NAVA's Pumpkin #4 were the two worst - painful raised red welts everywhere the perfume oil touched me). I'm also allergic to oakmoss, which is a component in a lot of fougeres and earthy/masculine scents (and a common allergen - the EU actually has rules about using it in cosmetics because of that). If I steer clear of those two things, I'm fine.

Keep track of which scents give you bad reactions, and see if they have any notes in common. If everything you've tried from a specific company makes your skin sting/itch/turn red regardless of how it smells, you might be reacting to something in their carrier oil and may need to avoid that company's entire product line (ex: if you're allergic to coconut oil, misery awaits from a number of indie companies). If it's just the spicy scents, or just the scents with citrus oil in them, or just the earthy scents or just the floral scents, then it may be just specific kinds of scents or specific ingredients you need to avoid.

Any Subtle Citrusy Scents?

Posted by Richard-Harden · in r/FemFragLab · 3 months ago

Hi, I'm new to fragrances in general since I have a sensitive nose. I'm just a bit curious - are there any light/subtle citrusy scents? I'm leaning more into oranges and maybe orange blossoms if there are any that aren't too heavy on my nose. If not, is there any way to like, make a scent lighter? Like do I just spray less?

welcome to the community! :) i have a sensitive nose too, and for most fragrances i spray once on the wrist and dab both wrists, elbows, and my neck! that being said, it might be worthwhile to look into some body mists / sprays, as i find they are often lighter even while being heavyhanded.

for light citrus scents, i really enjoy selections from jo malone like orange marmalade! unfortunately, my favourite citrus-fragrance-producing line was discontinued in my country, but if you are in europe, atelier cologne is a wonderful brand to look at as well!

Noyz lost and found is an Italian lemon and slightly woodsy scent. It’s not a powerhouse.

Tocca Stella is a blood orange and light floral.

If you are very sensitive I’d start with 1-2 sprays on the trunk of your body below your chest so you aren’t smelling them so intensely

A lot of perfumes give me headaches, especially strong florals and heavy patchouli. Everyone’s triggers are different though, and what’s fine for me might not be for you. Identifying the safest notes and brands will help you so much. I figured out that most vanilla based and citrus frags are ok for me, but sweet or vanillas are headache-inducing for others. Start by making a list of the ones you know are bad and compare notes to see if you can figure out what is triggering you.

I have trouble with florals.

When I get a new scent, I spray it on a cotton round and keep it near me for a while before spraying it on my skin. Some scents will take several days before I feel like I can tolerate them. Some scents never end up working for me.

I’m the same, and I just do 1 spray- very light, and if I feel headachey I don’t wear any. It’s frustrating to love perfume but be so sensitive to headaches. Try by/Rosie Jane- they tend to work well for me and are clean and light.

Look into natural perfumes. They don't last nearly as long (at least the higher notes,) but I actually prefer that. Teone Reinthal is my favorite house (TRNP) but I don't think she ships to the US anymore.

I would recommend going for scents with low projection. And staying from scents heavy on the synthetics like iso E super. I am also sensitive to strong scents. I like Kayali, Jo Malone, Snif, Kyse, and 7 Virtues. I also wear a lot of body mist sprays because they are less strong. You may also try the assorted skin scents.

There won’t be one correct answer to this question. It’s all subjective and depends entirely on what YOU are sensitive to. Things that bother me, may not bother you. And things that don’t bother me, may really bother you.

So my best advice for this would be to try fragrances that are known to sit close to the skin for most people, and limit the amount of sprays. Also, don’t spray wrists or chest/neck. Instead spray inner elbows.

Oh boy, perfume is one of my special interests 🙈

My sensitivity to smells has gotten more intense as I’ve gotten older, so I tend to opt for “lighter” fragrance profiles as a result.

Histoiries de Parfums is a French house with scents inspired by figures and the arts throughout history. They have discovery sets and also sell individual samples - two of my favorites from them are 1899 and 1969.

Scent Split is really good for decants, they offer many big name and niche brands in smaller sizes so you can sample them! Some brands that I’ve tried from them are Diptyque, Byredo, and Le Labo.

Luckyscent also offers samples of a lot of brands, but theirs are only 1ml (IIRC). They also carry many discovery sets, and tend to have more reviews posted.

The sub /r/indiemakeupandmore is great for indie brand recommendations as well! :)

I love this. I made another similar comment but I like your format a lot more. I would just like to add one thing:

fragrantica will give you a breakdown of all the notes so you can get more familiar with your likes and dislikes when testing samples.

I would also like to strongly recommend samples before you buy a larger bottle instead of blind buying anything expensive. It’s fun to explore and you find some great winners this way.

I’m also really sensitive to smells, so I tend to go for more vanillas or clean scents. I really like For Strange Women’s London Fog (black tea, vanilla, bergamot). They (and a lot of perfume companies) also sell samples so you can try them out on your own skin first, since they smell different on everyone.

It looks like their site is down for updates until tomorrow but here ya go! https://forstrangewomen.com/

Best perfumes for sensitive skin

Key Considerations for Choosing Perfumes for Sensitive Skin:

  1. Fragrance-Free or Low Fragrance: Look for perfumes labeled as "fragrance-free" or "hypoallergenic" to minimize the risk of irritation.

  2. Natural Ingredients: Opt for perfumes made with natural ingredients and essential oils, as they are often gentler on the skin compared to synthetic fragrances.

  3. Alcohol Content: Choose alcohol-free options or those with lower alcohol content, as alcohol can be drying and irritating for sensitive skin.

  4. Patch Testing: Always perform a patch test before applying a new fragrance to ensure you don’t have an adverse reaction.

  5. Light Scents: Consider lighter scents, such as citrus, floral, or green notes, which are generally less likely to irritate sensitive skin compared to heavier, musky fragrances.

Recommended Perfumes:

  • Jo Malone London Wood Sage & Sea Salt: A fresh, light scent with natural ingredients that is well-tolerated by sensitive skin.

  • L'Occitane Lavender Eau de Toilette: Made with natural lavender essential oil, this fragrance is soothing and gentle.

  • Acqua di Parma Colonia: A classic citrus fragrance that is refreshing and often recommended for sensitive skin.

  • Herbivore Botanicals Rose Water Mist: While not a traditional perfume, this mist offers a light, natural rose scent and is very gentle on the skin.

Takeaway: When selecting a perfume for sensitive skin, prioritize natural, hypoallergenic options with minimal synthetic ingredients. Always test a small amount first to ensure compatibility with your skin.
