TL;DR
Z Grills
Z Grills have garnered positive feedback for their performance and reliability. Users appreciate the ease of use, where you simply add pellets, select the temperature, and monitor cooking via a phone app [5:1]. The grill is praised for its ability to produce tender ribs and prime rib with consistent results
[5]. Additionally, Z Grills are noted for their durability, with users reporting long-term satisfaction and minimal maintenance issues
[5:5].
Weber SmokeFire
The Weber SmokeFire (ELX4 Sear+) is recommended for both smoking and grilling. It excels in longer cooks like ribs and pork butt, as well as shorter ones like salmon and burgers [4:5]. The Weber provides more direct heat/flame, making it suitable for various types of cooking. Users suggest using Weber pellets for optimal performance
[4:5].
Yoder Smokers
Yoder Smokers, particularly the 640S model, are highly regarded for their durability and versatility. They can smoke and grill/sear effectively, making them a comprehensive solution for those who want a single grill that does both well [4:7]. Although initially perceived as expensive, many users find the investment worthwhile due to the grill's quality and retrofit capabilities
[4:7].
Camp Chef Woodwind Pro
The Camp Chef Woodwind Pro with the sidekick sear is another popular choice. It offers versatility with features that allow for both smoking and grilling [4:8]. This model is appreciated for its ability to handle various cooking tasks efficiently.
Considerations for Choosing a Pellet Grill
When selecting a pellet grill, consider what you prioritize in your cooking experience. Pellet grills are often likened to Swiss army knives; they can perform multiple tasks but may not excel at specific ones compared to dedicated tools [4:3]. If you're looking for a grill that can do it all, brands like NutriChef and others offer portable options that provide flexibility
[4:3]. However, if you want specialized performance, investing in a high-quality model like Yoder or Weber might be beneficial.
My girlfriend just got me my first grill guys, I haven’t grilled before but I seen a friend use a pellet grill and the food was absolutely delicious. Can you guys give me some types on grilling? What type of pellets I should get that gives the food the best flavor? Sorry, I’m just been very excited to get into the grill life!
I love smoking chuck roast.
Shred, and make some killer shredded beef sandwiches.
https://youtu.be/oGBw3RQALkE?si=lt3oJJCXfCFSearh
Super easy and delicious
I got one last fall and am very pleased. How about bacon wrapped shrimp, roasted sweet potatoes, baby back ribs and so on?
Bacon wrapped shrimp...That's my #1 favorite food wrapped around my #3 favorite food
Sounds like a good idea!
Remember to clean out the fire pot under the heat deflector regularly! A shop vac makes it super easy and fast.
Welcome to the family! You will now find every excuse to crack open a six pack and smoke something every chance you get.
Edit: Bear Mountain Pellets have yielded the most smoke and best flavor for me. The pitboss competition blend is also good and you can get a 40 pound bag of those at Lowe’s for around $18.
I can already imagine it now, and I heard of those yielding a good flavor too, I’ll have to check those out
This is too true. All of my money the past 2 weeks has been in beer and meat. I also just got the exact model 2 weeks ago.
Looks like a great setup. Take care of her and she'll last you a lifetime!!!♥️
Recently got my first ever Z Grill and am beyond impressed. I previously used a Masterbuilt Electric Smoker and a Weber Genesis both of which I liked but not as much as I like my Z Grills grill. Smoked my first batch of ribs and they came out absolutely amazing! 4 hours no wrap at 225 for 2 hours, 250 for 1 hour, and 275 for 1 hour. Sauced for the last 30 minutes. Perfect on the bend test. Perfectly tender and came off the bone with a slight bite. Everyone who tried them loved them. Also did a prime rib recently and it was 10/10! So glad I invested in this grill!
I bought about the cheapest zgrill pellet smoker about 5 years ago and it’s still going strong. Nicely done!
Thanks! That’s awesome to hear! I did a ton of research before buying and am happy with my decision thus far.
Honestly, country style ribs. They cook very well on the grill and taste amazing.
That sounds amazing, I’ve never tried country-style ribs on mine! Do you go low and slow or crank the heat a bit? Any rub or sauce you swear by? I’m definitely adding this to my weekend list.
I didn't go so low as to smoke them, but did 300 to 350 and seared them afterwards. I cooked to just above safe eating temp for pork to avoid drying them out.
I don't have a favorite brand, but I like using a maple bacon seasoning on them plus a little bit of coarse salt.
Can I have the details on the smoke you did? I want to do a turkey meatloaf soon
I used the Meat Church meatloaf recipe. Basically make a meatloaf with a binder, onions, etc in this case 3 parts beef to 1 part sausage.
Wrap it and freeze it
Take it out of the freezer throw some worcestershire sauce and seasoning on it, and smoke for 4 hours to 160.
bacon, amazing ribs maple recipe.
That sounds insane, crispy bacon + maple ribs? Absolute flavor bomb. Did you smoke them low and slow or go oven-style? I need this in my weekend BBQ lineup!
no no, its just bacon. though i think now i need to do maple ribs.
https://amazingribs.com/tested-recipes/pork-recipes/best-maple-bacon-recipe/
Tri tip, smoke it until 125 and then sear. So good
So many good things but it's always something so basic like a cheeseburger that makes me the happiest
Right? My favorite thing at the moment is BBQ chicken thighs. Easy, cheap, and tasty.
Those are so cheap and easy! Their always a winner. That's a regular thing at least once a week. Don't know why people get hyped up on wings when thighs are where it's at
Ok I am going to upgrade my pellet cooking. I want the best so give me your thoughts… Good & Bad… Cheers!! 🔥💨🥃
Most owners I’ve seen (including a good buddy) struggle with lower than 225 of true grill temp but pretty much any other pellet grill will go to the 160-180 range. I believe Recteq also specs it at 225 lower limit
I’ll reiterate what’s already been mentioned here: pellet grills are like the Swiss army knife; they can do it all but might not hold up well to specific made tools. But if you’re not a MasterChef who micro-monitors the temperature of their cooking, you can get by with a good do-it-all grill just fine.
Having said that, I’ve found the NutriChef Portable Grill to be decently good at all tasks. Like the jack of all trades, it can grill, bake, braise, and roast well. Plus, it comes with two wheels, so you can move it around your backyard or even take it to picnics if you wish.
Yoder 640S. If you want to grill/sear for dozens of people, itself a rare use case for most, then step up to a bigger Yoder. They certainly have them.
I bought mine specifically because it smokes and grills/sears well. That, and it’s the last cooker you’ll ever need to buy due to the durability, reliability, and as importantly, the retrofit-ability.
I was appalled at the cost when I first learned of Yoders (my last grill was less than $300), but after a few months of research, the Yoder was the only choice. Thought I was going to buy a Traeger flagship model at first, and then worked through all the other usual suspects.
I have a 640S. Love it. Can grill and use the direct flame part, and have the cast iron griddle add on as well, but I do use my propane grill still as it is there and cheaper/easier/quicker still to use. If someone could only have one, I would do a Yoder, but even then would suggest getting a propane/gas grill to use for grilling.
Love the griddle!
Will have to give that grill speed/cost comparison some analysis.
My old gas grill heated up fairly quickly.
But the Yoder heats up surprisingly quickly as well - especially with the diffuser plate removed. And my pellet cost is low due to buying by the pallet from Cookin’ Pellets when it matters, and by using the Kirkland (Pit Boss) blend when it doesn’t.
In the end, yeah - if there’s room or interest for only one, getting one that does both is key - and there aren’t many out there that do.
As an aside, Yoder (as is) will almost produce Neapolitan pizza (941F required) but not quite. For that extra 75F or so, they do offer the pizza oven accessory.
I own one but keep forgetting to use it. Did flatbread without it and those came out great.
The journey never ends…
Yodey makes very high qulaity grills! That's why you generally can only find them as specialty BBQ supply stores.
I’ve been really happy with my Weber SmokeFire (ELX4 Sear+) for this purpose.
It’s been awesome for smoking ribs, pork butt, and turkey (longer cooks).
Really great for shorter cooks like cedar plank salmon too.
I’ve done tons of great reverse sears, including ribeye, NY strip, tri-tip, and pork chops.
And I’ve been really happy with it for weekday burgers and sausages with the temp cranked to 450-550°.
The Weber provides more direct heat/flame to it’s well-suited for this type of use.
Some tips if you go with the Weber:
I’ve had the Weber for about 7 months now and use it between 1 and 5 days a week. Not a single problem to date, and just about every cook has come out great.
I have the ELX6 and agree with your comments. The other option is to get the Camp Chef WW Pro with the attached grill.
I love my Camp Chef Woodwind Pro with the sidekick sear.
I second this. Can cook anything and multiple items at once.
Pellet grills aren’t all that great for grilling other than maybe the Bullseye, but it’s not that great of a smoker so you comprise on that front a little - it can’t do lower heat, and puts food close to the heat source.
So if you’re thinking you want a pellet grill that can smoke a brisket for 15 hours on Saturday then whip up burgers quick on a Tuesday night for the family you’ll struggle. Some pellet grills offered from Pitboss, Camp Chef and others do advertise direct flame grilling - the flame area is pretty tiny, and when you go high heat you need to ensure the grease collection tray is clean or you’ll have a fire.
Best bet is a pellet grill that also has a propane sear box or cast iron griddle.
Also when you say “the best”. This can be many things. Something like a Yoder is built like a tank but may not have all the features of a grill half its price. But that grill at half the price won’t be constructed of the same gauge or material of metal. You can buy a Rolls Royce, but maybe you actually wanted a pick up truck.
Like a Swiss army knife or a Leatherman, they can do it all in a pinch, but specific made tools are better. I have a pellet grill, 2 kettles, and a griddle. And looking at another, shhhh.
The ribs look awesome brotha! I got a zgrill last year from Home Depot for like $429 with a cover and I love it. Things a beast!
Thanks! I am really impressed thus far. I held off on buying for a while as I wasn’t sure if it would be better than my MES was and it was absolutely the right choice. The MES was great but this grill is a huge step up! Plus not having to load chips into it every 30-60 minutes is a huge win too!
I have had mine for about 4 years now and love it. It gets used all the time and has been a solid machine.
I’m excited to see all that I can make with it. We live in the Midwest so I’m curious to see how it performs in the middle of winter.
Nice!! Welcome to the wonderful world of pellet cooking 🔥
I’ve had my Z grill for 5 years. Thing is a tank. Replaced the igniter a couple years ago, but that’s just a $8 part on Amazon! Enjoy!
Thanks!!
Good for you! I too love using my pellet grill. It's so easy, add pellets, select temp, ... monitor on my phone.
Agree!
I'm a intermediate griller, haven't smoked before in my life. I want a pellet grill for grilling, smoking, baking, and just general cooking. I also don't want to skimp on quality.. I'm willing to spend 1k on this for my outdoor kitchen. Would love any recos!
For your first? Get a Pitboss on clearance for ~70% off at Lowes. Then upgrade once you’ve determined pellet grills/smoking is for you.
agree with this, go cheaper for the first one if new to pellets because you might not like the flavor it gives. now if you're familiar and had food off one before then go for better off the bat.
i got a cheap camp chef and like it enough over the past year to want to upgrade and then sell my unit.
100%. I got the Lexington from Walmart. Smoked every meat known to man for a year.
Just bought a charcoal grill last weekend, I just prefer it
I prefer charcoal as well but the pellet grill just makes it so easy with a ‘good enough’ result.
I'll throw in GMG. They seem the least talked about grills around here.. I have a daniel boone and it has never given me any issues. Solid build construction as well!
Edit: Since people were mentioning issues..
My GMG is a 2018 model. Been running strong sun, rain, or snow... Since then. No paint or QC issues to report here personally.
Was waiting for someone to bring up GMG. I have the same one and it has been a great grill for about 6 years now. About to upgrade to the Recteq RT-700 but for the price, you can’t great GMG for a beginner grill
I’d also say the same thing. I bought a Daniel Boone Prime back in 2019. Never had issues with it besides the probes being questionable. Upgraded last week to a RT-590 and shipped on Monday.
GMG was a great starter for me.
I’ve gone through 3 igniters, an auger motor, and had to sand down the inside of the lid because the paint was peeling off in my food. I’ll never recommend GMG to anyone.
I have a 2020 GMG DB and it's a piece of trash. Makes weird loud noises, struggles to keep a steady temperature, the paint also started bubbling and peeling off.
Have you contacted GMG regarding these issues?
Do you have your grease tray positioned properly? That can make the grill temp probe tweak out sometimes I've noticed if it's off by a bit.
Hey all! So, I absolutely love smoked food and I’m looking into finally buying a smoker but this would be my first one so I’m not exactly sure. Could anyone recommend a specific type? I’m really leaning towards getting a pit boss as they seem pretty affordable but I’m just not sure what to look for. Thank you!
What's your budget? Take a look at the yoder ys640s. Great pellet grill!
Went with Traeger Prо 575 recently with this general cоnstraint. I’m very happy. Think Z Grills and Camp Chef may have mоdels as gооd оr better but I gоt paralyzed by research and ultimately just decided I knew I’d be decently happy with the industry leader. Yоu can alsо check the pellet grills recоmmended by reddit users list

I am also looking
I'm looking at the woodwind pro 36. You like yours? And can you get up to and above 500F?
I'll take any insights you have, good bad and ugly. Ty
https://www.foodandwine.com/lifestyle/kitchen/best-pellet-grills Weber Smokefire EX4 Pellet Grill is the best overall
I'm looking at buying a new one and finally replacing my VERY old GMG.
Contenders:
What's the vote?
Top based on my research:
You’re looking at 3000+ for any of these pits, but if you want the “best of the best” Pellet cookers, these are going to be it.
I moved away from Pellet, but personally if I were to buy one again it’d be LSG or Pitts N Spits.
Yoder, reqtec, gmg/camp chef, any other brand, traeger.
Get woodwind pro, I have the xxl pro vertical but has the smoke box too. It’s miles better than my Pit boss
Wwpro will give the best flavor compared to any pellet grill out right now, if you are looking for built and durability yoder for example will be good.
Wwpro can easily last 10+ years btw
Lone Star grillz and wood chips just entered the room
My vote is Recteq.
Looking into my first Pellet grill what are some of the best models 700 or less
I was in the same boat ended with a used 1000d3 I got on market place for 200 after a good cleaning and I sprung for the heat deflector and a new broiler I was all in around 300$ and could not be happier beats the 600$ plus I was going to spend now I can spend that on meat and pellets lol. Happy hunt and happier grilling and smoking
I love my KC Combo. Use it at least every week, oftentimes every day on the weekends.
But, when it dies, I'm looking real hard at the masterbuilt gravity series
I have had a few PB grills/smokers and love them. Are you going grill/smoker (horizontal) or mostly smoker (Vertical). If horizontal, I think the optimal under your limit is the 1150 DX Wood Pellet Grill at lowes... in my mind the best options of WiFi/Bluetooth, PID controller with 5degree increments, etc.
Yea I looked at these I want a horizontal ones I have the Weber smoky mountain now had it for 10 years nothing to go wrong with it lol just wagon something easier and to grill with as well my old round Weber grill on its last leg
Not pitboss in my opinion
Agreed. I’d steer clear of a pit boss I got one in December and have had nothing but problems with it.
What types of problems have you had? Just curious, I’ve owned two PBs, most recent being purchased in December. I was worried the quality wouldn’t be the same as my first but have found the quality to be the same and haven’t had issues with it at all.
I was wondering might spend the extra money get a better brand thanks
I just need opinions and advice looking to buy my first pellet grill trying to spend around 1500-2000 at the most. Need opinions not only on what grill provides the best results but also durability.
Buy Weber Searwood and call it a day. I had it for a yearand it impresses me and my guests every time.
Camp Chef WW pro, Recteq dual fire or Traeger ironwood xl. Wait a week and there should be some deals to be had.
Weber Searwood XL
Weber searwood xl.
The Traeger woodridge is a great option and its only about $1200. If you're willing to push your budget another $200, you can get the Traeger ironwood xl, which is the absolute best imo

Key Considerations for Choosing a Pellet Grill:
Temperature Range: Look for a grill that can reach high temperatures (around 500°F or more) for searing, as well as low temperatures (around 180°F) for smoking.
Cooking Area: Consider the size of the cooking surface. A larger grill (around 500-800 square inches) is ideal for cooking for a crowd, while smaller models are suitable for personal use.
Build Quality: Choose a grill made from durable materials like stainless steel or heavy-duty steel to ensure longevity and better heat retention.
Hopper Capacity: A larger hopper (20 lbs or more) allows for longer cooking times without needing to refill pellets frequently.
Wi-Fi or Bluetooth Connectivity: Some modern grills come with smart technology that allows you to monitor and control the grill remotely via an app, which can be very convenient.
Ease of Cleaning: Look for features like a removable grease tray or ash cleanout system to simplify maintenance.
Recommendations:
Traeger Pro Series 575: This grill is highly rated for its versatility, ease of use, and excellent temperature control. It has a cooking area of 575 square inches and a hopper capacity of 18 lbs, making it suitable for various cooking styles.
Camp Chef Woodwind Wi-Fi 24: This model offers great features like Wi-Fi connectivity, a large cooking area (570 square inches), and a slide-and-grill feature for direct flame cooking. It's perfect for those who want more control over their grilling experience.
Pit Boss 700FB: A more budget-friendly option, this grill provides a good balance of features, including a 700 square inch cooking area and a 20 lb hopper. It's a solid choice for beginners and experienced grillers alike.
Choosing the right pellet grill ultimately depends on your cooking style and preferences, so consider what features are most important to you!
