What Redditors are Saying

Best Kamado Grills

TL;DR The Big Green Egg (BGE) and Kamado Joe are popular choices for their durability, versatility, and lifetime warranties. Other options include the Weber Summit Kamado and the Akorn for budget-friendly alternatives.

Versatility and Performance

Kamado grills are praised for their versatility, allowing users to smoke, grill, bake, and even use them as pizza ovens [1:1][1:3]. They can maintain consistent temperatures for long periods, making them ideal for both low-and-slow cooking and high-temperature searing [1:5]. The ability to perform multiple cooking styles on a single device makes them a favorite among enthusiasts who appreciate efficiency and space-saving [1:8].

Durability and Warranty

One of the standout features of kamado grills like the Big Green Egg is their durability and lifetime warranty [1:5][4:2]. Users have reported using their BGE for decades with minimal maintenance, primarily replacing gaskets and grids [1:6]. This longevity makes them a worthwhile investment despite their higher upfront cost [4:7].

Popular Brands and Models

The Big Green Egg and Kamado Joe are frequently mentioned as top choices due to their quality construction and extensive accessory options [2:1][2:3]. Kamado Joe's Classic models are noted for their multi-tier cooking systems and ease of use [3:3]. For those looking for more affordable options, the Weber Summit Kamado and Akorn are recommended [4:1][3:2].

Cost Considerations

While ceramic kamados like the BGE and Kamado Joe are expensive, they are often seen as cost-effective over time due to their durability and performance [4:5]. Some users suggest considering used models or exploring brands like Weber for more budget-friendly alternatives [4:4]. It's important to weigh the initial cost against potential savings from not needing frequent replacements or repairs [4:11].

Additional Factors

When choosing a kamado grill, consider factors such as warranty coverage, included accessories, and the quality of exterior hardware [5:6]. Some users have noted differences in build quality between brands, which could influence long-term satisfaction [5:2][5:4]. If possible, visiting stores to see models in person can help make an informed decision [5:5].

What’s so great about a kamado

ORIGINAL POST

I have had a lot of grills and smokers. I just sold my custom offset because I just don’t use it. I currently have a kettle, WSM, UDS, traeger ironwood xl, and Weber slate. I always sell my pellet smokers and get a different one (I’ve had pitboss, GMG, Yoder, Recteq, and traeger). I just like trying new things. Well now I’m kind of tired of having all these grills/smokers lying around. I primarily use my WSM, slate, and kettle. The traeger was kind of not in the radar but got it for a good price. And that gets used 20% of the time, just depends on time of year.

Anyways I’m flirting with getting rid of the kettle, WSM, and MAYBE the pellet for a kamado. Some of these have to reside in my garage and I’d like to cook more on the back porch for entertainment sakes.

So I know kamados do everything ok but excel at nothing except stable temps. I’ve just never seen myself being a kamado person. But it kind of makes sense. Talk me in or out of it.

I have a stick burner, a gas grill and a kamado. The offset is great for churning out real bbq, a long slow cook that requires feeding throughout the day and makes a superior quality meat. The gas grill is for veggies mostly but sometimes I use it for fish or chicken, when I want to cook dinner but don’t want the convenience of an oven. My kamado though, that’s my workhorse. It’s just an akorn, nothing fancy. It makes an excellent kettle grill for burgers, steak, chicken, whatever. It’s also great at cooking bacon wrapped jalapenos, or smoked Mac n cheese. Where it excels is if I’m having a party and I need to throw on a couple butts for pulled pork but I also have to clean the house and get things ready, I can load it in the morning, fire it up, put the meat on and just let it ride all day and I only have to check it once or twice and that’s really only to make sure things are looking good (and to sneak a little piece of meat off) My offset makes better tasting pulled pork but my kamado lets me be free all day.

Does everything better than a cheap anything will.

Smoker, pizza oven, grill, rotisserie.

Lifetime warranty. Mine has been outside for 8 years and still looks new, less the gasket.

Last grill you'll ever have to buy.

Thanks for the reminder about the gasket... need to do that.

Right now, as I type this, I am eating an awesome piece of leftover pizza that I made on my Kamado. Wednesday, I will grill burgers on that same Kamado. Friday, I will smoke ribs on that same Kamado, and Saturday will be jerky. All of it will be amazing. Not just "pretty good"- amazing. I paid $300 for my Kamado 12 years ago. That's what's so great about a Kamado.

That’s one of the upsides of me downsizing to just one cooker for many things. I’ve done the build UDS, custom offset, etc… downsizing just seems to make sense. I’m not a professional, I don’t compete, I’ve just been doing it for years.

Big Green Egg owner here hailing from South Dakota. My egg cooks year round. It doesn’t know or care if it’s 100 above or 20 below. No insulated blankets necessary to maintain a consistent temp.

As others have said, it can go low and slow at 225 (or less) all day long without straying from the target temp or 800+ degrees for pizzas, a wok, searing, etc.

It’s extremely versatile and has a lifetime warranty. I’ve had mine for nearly 20 years and prior to that, I was buying something every couple of years (between replacing flavorizers, grates, igniters, or the entire grill because it would just rust out).

Yeah, the BGE isn't as expensive as it seems when you factor in how long they last. I've had mine for around 17 years, still going strong. All I've replaced are the gaskets and the cooking grid. Most of my friends have replaced their pellet smokers several times in the time I've had the BGE.

2 upvotes on reddit
WanderingMadmanRedux · 14 days ago

I've got a BGE. With accessories, yes, it can do a little bit of everything. I've:

Smoked (just about everything you can think of)
Seared
Reverse Seared
Rotisserie (whole chicken, wings, etc.)
Baked (Mac and Cheese, etc)
Pizza

Now, is it the best at anything specific, no... but it's better than having multiple different pieces if you are low on space. Your family will probably enjoy what you can cook in it if you are a capable cook. Nothing can fix it if you aren't.

42 upvotes on reddit
Angry_Mountain_Man · OP · 14 days ago

Yeah space is getting a little cramped. And most of my family doesn’t like heavy smoke flavor anyways. Makes sense

7 upvotes on reddit
WanderingMadmanRedux · 14 days ago

You can get heavy smoke if you want. It's one of those "jack or all trades" kinda set-up. You can get it to do whatever you want.

I've thought about building an offset to get more rack space, but the BGE does fine for now.

Unbiased Kamado Reviews?

Posted by haard17 · in r/kamadogrilling · 4 years ago

Hi all - trying to research Kamados right now. Really excited to get into the cooking community. In my opinion many of the sites that come up from a Google search are heavily biased or read as marketing puff pieces on the different brands?

Lots of 'paid sponsorship' blogging articles...

Anyone have recommendations of some reputable websites /Product information to review? I'll also be checking the grills out in person this weekend...

Thanks!!

In my opinion, all of the lower price kamado grills are more or less the same (pit boss, Louisiana, vision...). I’ve been told the Big green egg is good but hyped and overpriced. If I could afford it, I’d look at the Kamado Joe.

I have pit boss that I got for a really good price and I’ve been pretty happy.

Can’t go wrong for the price. Beats the hell out of a Weber kettle. I just threw mine out. It would fill up with water if I didn’t keep the cover on it. Buddy of mine let’s his sit out all the time and it’s fine. But mine did rot out after 3-4 years.

I would do it again, but I’m sure the higher end ones are better in every way. And I loved my Akron, so I’m ready to step up to something nicer

I have the Goldens Kamado and the Blaze Kamado. I have made numerous cooks on them and am well satisfied with their abilities. Both do their jobs well, low and slow or hot and fast and hold the temps well. I am terrified of cracking ceramic and these will not break. That said, their only drawback for me is a dearth of accessories unlike the KJ or BGE which have more than you could ever buy. Both of these (KJ and BGE ) are very good cookers and have very good warranties.

Kamado grills?

Posted by Both-Butterfly6381 · in r/grilling · 2 years ago

Hello, all. My husband enjoys grilling, but we have lived in apartments for the past few years. He still grills at cookouts with family/friends but he doesn’t currently have his own grill. We moved into a house with a yard a few months ago, and with summer approaching, he’s been dropping hints about wanting a new grill. Our anniversary is coming up so I thought it would make a great gift. He has mentioned kamados, specifically Big Green Egg. I looked at some online along with Kamado Joes but they are pretty expensive. I want to get him a nice gift but am wondering, are they really worth it? Are there any similar options that are more affordable? Any suggestions would be appreciated!

Kamado joe makes a product called the kettle joe that blends steel grills with ceramic grills, there is also the char griller acorn grill that is a steel kamado style. The ceramic grills can be very expensive but they are a tool that are a joy to use and are very versatile. They also often come with warranties much much longer than the steel competitors

I’ve seen the Kamado Joe Classic 1st generation at Lowe’s for around $800. You get a good amount of accessories for that price point. That will include the multi-tier cooking system and clean out tools.

If he's mentioning big green eggs he definitely wants one.

Is it worth it? That's too subjective. Mine is worth it to me because I use once a week usually and I love grilling with charcoal and smoking. Ya they're super expensive. I'm into my large for probably 1500 after accessories like the grid system and pizza stone. But it's worth it to me. They are tough as nails. Someone else said something about non transferable warranty and possibility of finding a used one cheap. Both wrong.

Similar more affordable options? Weber has a kamado now that looks good and is a bit cheaper.

Edit: I reread your post. Those style grills are great, but they are not cheap.

Everyone has their own preferences, so it’s honestly safer to let him pick it himself. I know it ruins the surprise, but I think it’s better to not be surprised with something that is perfect than to be surprised with something that isn’t what you like in a situation like this.

I have a Kamado Joe and love it. While it was very expensive, I think it was totally worth the price, I use it for basically everything. However, some people feel the same way about a Webber kettle which is a fraction of the price. Some people won’t go for either because they only want propane. The other thing is skill level. Kamado have a pretty steep learning curve since they are thick ceramic and take a long time to heat up AND are basically impossible to cook down if you overshoot the temperature.

Which Kamado should I choose?

Posted by thecaptain90 · in r/grilling · 2 years ago

Hello!

I would like to buy a Kamado for myself, primarily for BBQ (for long-term low-temperature cooking) I know that the Big Green Egg occupies one of the leading places, but it is very expensive (for me). Is there an alternative that is built from the same good materials, has good heat resistance, has many accessories and parts, and the warranty administration works well? (In case something goes wrong) Can you recommend such brands, or even more, that are worth dealing with?

The thing about the top readily available Kamado brands is they come with a lifetime warranty on the ceramics (if purchased new). My OG 2006 Big Green Egg had had multiple fire boxes and rings replaced, a new base, a platesetter. It’s 17 years old and still pretty much like new. So they are expensive upfront but I would say probably cheaper over time if you plan to keep it. If you are doing ceramic, I would do BGE, KJ, or Primo depending on what fits the bill for you. You will have a lifetime of trouble free use and a decent support network no matter where you live. The Weber Summit is a really sweet rig as well. It’s just as much $ as the ceramic versions and I believe the warranty is a only few years. That said, it’s made of metal and would likely last for many years without issue. Parts are cheaper than ceramic and weber has a massive dealership base around the country.

I highly discourage buying used ceramic cookers. They all break at some point and the warranty is a big part of the price and experience. I would buy a used Weber (if you can find one) without hesitation.

Good luck and just know you can’t really got wrong. Get in the game and have some fun.

Can usually find a good deal on a used Kamado Joe or BGE.

Or pay full price for a new one. Like I tell people, it's the last grill you'll ever have to buy. Cheap grills are made cheaply, and unless you're rolling it out of the garage every time you use it will only last a few years before needing replaced or replacement parts. I went through 2 chargriller akorns before I got my Kamado Joe. $600 worth of grills, turned to scrap. I live in a very hot and humid environment and they both rusted out after a few years.

Just make sure you don’t lose the original receipt like I did. I can still get warranty coverage but it’s a pain in the ass. If I hadn’t lost the receipt I could want into any dealer and get replacement parts without a problem.

I think they kind of count on you losing it eventually and the warranty is original owner only.

Kamado perspectives

Hi all, I’m about to take the plunge on a kamado after a few years using a Weber master touch and an only fire smoker extension for low / slow cooking.

I’m pretty much set on a Big Joe 3, but the KamaGear/Grden V2 Max is substantially cheaper - does anyone have views on both to help me work out the cost/benefit trade offs?

I have a non branded kamado that was about 400 and a BGE mini max. The performance of the mini max is far superior imo. Hold temps steadier, gets a lot hotter and doesn’t require nearly as much fiddling and oversight when doing a longer smoke.

May be down to my way of use, but the difference between the two is night and day.

Edit to add: also a lot easier to find the accessories for the bigger branded.

Firstly, I liked that it was a UK supplier/company though that does come with risks being a smaller startup

I have a joe JR and not the same but found the quality of build poor in comparison. I've seen bigger KJ's but I felt the hinge and small design details looked much better on the V2. It seemed like the gasket, chimney and air fit fit was also better.

The outside hardware of KJ and BGE (hinges, bands, etc) are better quality steel, another factor to consider is warranty, read the warranties before you buy. Another consideration is what is included in the purchase, price it all out and see the difference.

I have a cheaper large kamado (still £500). It's brilliant. Use it all the time. And love to cook on it.

I don't know how much better it could be improving some small exterior quality.

Definitely go for it whatever you choose.

Just get a Weber kettle and upgrade in the future if you feel it’s necessary

27 upvotes on reddit

Question. Is it really an upgrade? Ive veen doing everything on my kettle for years. What is the "upgrade"? This is an honest question. I have no experience with Kamados.

7 upvotes on reddit
Relevant_Beginning57 · 1 month ago

The real upgrade is that it's a double walled insulated cooker. Much more fuel efficient. With a kamado the charcoal is lower in the cooker and a heat shield is placed over it to keep direct heat from the main cooking grate. This allows using the whole 24" grate when smoking.

18 upvotes on reddit
B
bassjam1 · 1 month ago

The upgrade to me is solely around the top vent that you can flip open for some serious airflow. I can get my WSK 75-100° hotter than my 22" and 26" kettles which makes for some amazing wings. And when I shut the vents it's more air tight so it saves more charcoal for the next cook.

That's for grilling though. They have really good temperature control for smoking and barely use any fuel. Of course that low charcoal usage is offset by lower charcoal flavor compared to a kettle or smokey mountain.

3 upvotes on reddit
elguaco6 · 1 month ago

Basically just what the other guy said I use a kettle and do everything in it as well. That’s why I said if he feels it’s necessary. Cause I honestly don’t at this stage in my life. Kettle is amazing.

It is absolutely one of the best charcoal grills on the market. It has about the same heat retention and fuel efficiency as ceramic kamados like the Big Green Egg and Kamado Joe, but it's also lighter, more durable, and easier to clean. When compared to other kamado grills, the price doesn't seem as crazy. That said, a normal kettle is 90% as good at 10% the cost so in my opinion the kettle is the way to go all day.

If you're new to charcoal just get a regular kettle to learn how to light it, manage the temps and smoke. It will do almost everything really well.

BUT, the Summit Charcoal/Kamado is the best grill I've ever owned.

Open everything up and it can get stupid hot super fast. But its just as happy to hold nice and low for a loooong time while using very little fuel.

Being metal, without the thermal mass of a regular kamado, it's really forgiving and will recover very quickly if you let it get too hot. Plus it's not too heavy to push around the backyard if it starts to rain.

For me, it is the perfect grill (and quite different to the regular kettle - of which I have a few). They are expensive and might not suit everyone's budget, but I've never heard of an owner who regretted their purchase. If mine was lost, stolen or damaged I'd replace it with the same in a heartbeat.

Kamado BBQ in the uk

Posted by TomZong · in r/UKBBQ · 1 year ago

Hello everyone,

I'm really wanting to get into kamado style BBQ. The reviews I see on YouTube are predominantly American and therefore a lot of the kamado grills aren't available (that I can see) in the UK.

I'm looking for something under a grand if possible but don't mind pushing the budget if there's anything that comes highly recommended and will be long-lasting.

Does anyone have any recommendations on brands/where to buy them?

TIA

It's mostly sex appeal, us KJ owners are drowning in tail.

For real though, KJ is just a better engineered product than most. Everything from the ventilation cap to the fire box has been carefully considered and having had both a Costco Louisiana Grills K24 and a KJ its all those small quality of life things that make it worth it.

Apart from the build, there is the KJ eco system. You will struggle for accessories for that Louisiana Grill Kamado, even generic ones don't typically come in the exact size needed, at least not in the UK in my experience.

3 upvotes on reddit
MatlockandBatshelter · 1 year ago

They can all do the same things and they generally all have fantastic warranties (although definitely check this before you buy), it's just easier with some over the others.

KJ s definitely the easiest to use and, as you've seen has the most content. If you want to get help via YouTube etc you will find plenty of people using a KJ so you can follow along exactly.

It's easy enough to adapt the settings, but it's an adaptation you don't have to make if you own a KJ.

More importantly, it's the most popular brand. There are loads of compatible accessories . This is the main difference for me and makes it well worth the additional cost, in my opinion.

I think the Costco one is also a very good option, and I think it's compatible with the KJ accessories too, but I don't own one, so don't quote me on that.

Ultimately the difference comes down to a few hundred pounds, for something I'll likely use for over a decade. I'd go with the KJ and I'd get the newest model my budget would stretch.

https://www.nisbets.co.uk/buffalo-ceramic-kamado-bbq-grill/dr826

This thing has been great and aged well, if I had a 1000 pound budget again It would be a strong contender, you would also have change for accessories, digital thermometer with probes, rotisserie for boneless thighs , cast iron plates for steaks veg, pizza stone what ever suits your style of cooking

Nice! Is that kept outdoors?

I've been wanting to knock up a similar permanent outdoor setup, but I've been worried about the longevity.

What kamado grill and why

Posted by teacherguy18 · in r/smoking · 4 years ago

I’m sure this is often asked but I’m trying to decide on which kamado grill I should buy. I am interested in used (for the right price) but am leaning to new (if warranties are solid). BGE, KJ, Vision, Louisiana grills, Akorn are what Ive been researching. How are the new warranties? Do they replace broken parts? Thanks

I have a large bge but if I was to buy one now at that price point I'd likely go with the kamado joe instead. The turn top is a better design for exhaust flow, the hinge is a more robust design, and the ash tray is convenient. These are all things your can upgrade with third party accessories but why when you can get it OEM? sounds like a lot of people have had good luck with the akorn though I can't speak to it as I've had no experience with it.

I have an Akorn and would recommend it for anyone looking to start with a Kamoda. I got hooked by using a big Green egg at my uncle-in-law's. I will say the big Green egg seemed to get to temp easier, and hold it more steady. My Akorn I can't trust the probe in the dome as it's 50-75 degrees off from reality, so I use a probe on the grate. I've gotten better and maintaining temp after some trial and error, but the 3 times I used the egg I did not have as much trouble getting consistent temps. That being said I struggle to justify the 4x cost of an egg over an Akorn.

I’ve got an Akorn and had it about 6 years. Never had a need for replacing anything and works just as well as the first day I got it. Don’t know much about the others, but the Akorn is a solid choice.

Same. Interested in hearing people defend the outrageous prices of green egg or other expensive smokers.

(1) I'd say brand recognition is one major point. (2) The ceramics can get hotter and I think hold temp a bit better. (3) Perhaps a third reason is perceived longevity?

I've owned an Akorn for 5 years in MN. It's kept outside with a cover. I've spent less than $100 for new parts in the past 5 years, and most of that is to replace the gaskets every couple of years.

I’ve smoked a brisket for 14 hours on mine in the cold and never had to add charcoal. Couldn’t imagine there’s any sort of benefit to an all ceramic.

My guess is it's (was?) a lack of up front research.

Vision is the best by far. I did a lot of research when I bought mine, but vision seemed to be the best quality for the best price. It also has both a ash drawer that makes it really easy to empty and it connects to gas too if you want it. I highly recommend it

I'll edit this with a link to a similar discussion over at bge sub, in a moment.

So where does this cart come from?

Grilla Grills sells it on their website. Would look for holiday/Black Friday deals. I picked up the grill and cart combo package w/accessories for <$1k last Black Friday.

I put this base on my vision grill and love it. The weak stand and casters from the standard vision grill starting bending under the weight after about 6mos but I’ve had this grill base for over 3 years and it’s great and rugged.

Any idea if this cart will hold a Kamado Joe Big Joe 3?

AggravatingMango542 · OP · 3 months ago

Not sure. If you can find the dimensions for the base of the KJ3, I can try to get a measurement for you from my cart.

Kamado grills

In the market for one. Debating between a Weber E6 or Kamado Big Joe 1. I live in an urban environment so ease of cleanup comes into play and I do like the ash catcher on the weber. But Big Joe seems easier to move. Any help with choosing is appreciated.

Summit owner here, has this choice a year ago. I went the one that didn’t have parts that could break when moving it. That said, both are excellent cookers.

One difference to check is fuel type flexibility. It’s my understanding that you have to use lump in the KJ line of kamados. The Weber can use lump or briquettes, I use both. On the accessories front, I think the KJ line wins. So much more made by and for them. If you want to rotisserie, you’re pretty much out of luck with Weber.

Probably more to consider, but for me ease of use and mobility were key factors in making my decision. And I think temperature management might be a little easier to manage on the Weber since you don’t have to manage overheating the ceramic and overshooting temp target. Of course that can come with time/experience.

How does KJ's design not work with briquettes? I would think anything that can hold a pile of burning carbon could do so regardless of whether it is in briquette form or lump form.

Have a look at the Grilla Kong if you decide to go ceramic kamado.

If you're going KJ, look at the Classic 3 or BJ II, the upgrades are worth it

Have a Kamado and would vote for that, though I don’t have experience with the E6

For cleanup I’d recommend adding the kick ash can. Definitely makes things easier. Not sure what your “moving” entails, but keep in mind Kamados are heavy (couple hundred pounds)

I mirror jorgojr comments above with one exception, the KJ half grates work on the Summit and there is the Only Fire rotisserie attachment.

It’s a great cooker and I don’t regret selling my WSM for it.

Maybe take a look at the Kamado Joe Kettle Joe. It's a new hybrid between a kettle grill and a Kamado.

best kamado grills

Key Considerations for Choosing a Kamado Grill:

  1. Material Quality: Look for grills made from high-quality ceramic or insulated steel. Ceramic retains heat well and provides excellent temperature control.

  2. Size and Cooking Area: Consider the size based on your cooking needs. Common sizes range from 13 inches to 24 inches in diameter. Larger grills can accommodate more food but may take longer to heat up.

  3. Temperature Range: A good kamado grill should reach high temperatures (up to 750°F) for searing, as well as low temperatures (around 200°F) for smoking.

  4. Versatility: Many kamado grills can grill, smoke, bake, and roast. Look for features that enhance versatility, such as adjustable vents and a heat deflector.

  5. Accessories: Check for included accessories like a grill grate, ash tool, and cover. Additional accessories like pizza stones and cast iron griddles can enhance your cooking experience.

Top Recommendations:

  • Big Green Egg: Often considered the gold standard, it offers excellent heat retention, a wide range of sizes, and a robust accessory ecosystem. It's versatile for grilling, smoking, and baking.

  • Kamado Joe Classic II: Known for its innovative features like the Divide & Conquer cooking system, which allows for multi-level cooking, and an easy-to-use ash management system.

  • Vision Grills Professional Series: A more budget-friendly option that still offers great performance and features, including a ceramic body and a variety of cooking accessories.

Takeaway: If you're serious about outdoor cooking and want versatility, investing in a high-quality kamado grill like the Big Green Egg or Kamado Joe can elevate your grilling game. Consider your cooking style and space to choose the right size and model for your needs.
