Italian Cuisine Recommendations
For those seeking Italian cuisine, several restaurants come highly recommended. Grotto in Beacon Hill is praised as the best Italian spot in the city with a cozy atmosphere [2:1]. Trattoria Il Panino and Mamma Maria in the North End are also popular choices; Mamma Maria offers a romantic old-world ambiance that many find charming
[5:1]
[5:2]. SRV and Fox & Knife are frequently mentioned for their excellent Italian dishes and pleasant dining experiences
[1:7]
[5:3].
Seafood and Local Cuisine
If you're interested in local seafood, Row 34, Mooncusser, and Banks Fish House are great options to explore Boston's renowned shellfish offerings [4:1]. Mooncusser is noted for its seafood-based tasting menu, making it a special occasion destination
[1:2].
Romantic Dining Spots
For a romantic setting, Sorellina in Back Bay offers a sophisticated atmosphere with mood lighting, perfect for an anniversary dinner [3:1]. Oleana, with its beautiful outdoor patio, provides an intimate dining experience
[4:2]. Sarma is another unique option where mentioning your anniversary can get you seated at a special anniversary table
[3:5].
Upscale and Unique Experiences
For those looking for upscale dining, Contessa offers a fantastic view of the Boston Garden and is known for its elegant setting [4:2]. Ostra is recommended for its exceptional service and complimentary amenities like a car service within two miles
[5:5].
General Tips
When planning an anniversary dinner, consider booking well in advance, especially for popular spots like Table 77 at Tresca in the North End [2:2]. Additionally, be sure to specify any special occasions when making reservations, as some restaurants offer special seating or services for celebrations.
Recently moved to Boston with my partner, and our 7-year anniversary is coming up. We have pretty high standards for food quality and tastes though and I don’t want the night to be a miss. Anyone know a great restaurant? Open to all food types/origins, but was thinking Italian, since we went to Italy this year. Any and all recommendations are appreciated!!
Mooncusser is a very good celebration dinner imho. Very seafood-based, tasting menu format, 2 1/2 hr experience.
Someone mentioned Sportello. Very good food but it's essentially counter seating (a few small tables) and not what I would consider a celebration dinner venue unless you're ok with the casual atmosphere.
Oleana on my list for sure.
Uni on my list for an omakase style 2+ hr dinner. Food is EXCELLENT and it's a nice atmosphere. Ive had many 'celebration' dinners there.
Thank you!
If you went to Italy this year, Boston Italian won't compare.
Yea, I haven’t tried an Italian restaurant here yet. But Cafe Paradiso in North end is comparable.
Sportello, Bar Volpe, Fox and Knife
Bar Volpe
Second Fox and Knife. Contessa is also very nice.
SRV
For a bit of context, we have been together for 4 years but are both students in Boston now. I was wondering if anyone could recommend any pretty nice places to go for dinner on our anniversary next weekend.
Table 77 at Tresca in the North End. It’s very romantic, but you need to book it months in advance!
Papa G’s in Brockton
Since you gave us nothing to go on you should take them to O Ya
Or Menton for the tasting menu with wine pairing.
Budget, ambiance, type of food you’re considering? How formal/informal?
Grotto in beacon hill. Best Italian in the city and a solid date spot. It’s dark inside tho
My one year wedding anniversary is coming up in November and I am trying to get ahead of the game. Where would people recommend the most romantic restaurants would be in Boston? Any answers appreciated!

Ah that answers that! Thanks!
Highly recommend Ma Maison in Beacon Hill. Quaint and intimate French restaurant.
Heard good things was definitely on my list cheers!
I just had a very nice date night at June Bug in Somerville! Althea in central square is also a great date night spot
seconding junebug and also backbar (nearby) for a pre/post-dinner drink if you’re looking for a lowkey pairing.
but the real standout is sarma! if you mention it’s your anniversary in your reservation, they’ll seat you at their “special anniversary table” — a cozy corner booth where you can sit side by side. a thoughtful touch we really appreciated!
My husband and I really enjoyed Sorellina in Back Bay/Copley for one of our anniversaries. Lots of pillars and dark mood lighting if you’re into that, and tasty! Same owners as Mistral, which is also great and I see recommended a lot, but I personally preferred sorellina’s deserts :)
Mistral and Sorrellina are great choices!
Wife and I are from Portland Oregon traveling to Boston for a family thing which happens to align with our 10th anniversary. What special occasion restaurants would you all recommend? We basically spend all of our disposable income on food and drink, so looking for that spot that blew you away. Hopefully somewhere that showcases local products, we are less interested in international cuisine that we can get at home unless it’s spectacular. We will probably Uber so location doesn’t really matter. Any ideas?
Contessa. Upscale place that has a fantastic view of the Boston Garden.
Oleana is run by the same chef as Sarma, but has a more intimate setting imo. Beautiful outdoor patio, too.
Mooo is pretty much our go-to when going for impressiveness. My wife's favorite based on taste is Mare Oyster Bar (awesome seafood dishes all around)
Let me jump on the Mooo bandwagon. It's our "goto" for a great night out.
Obviously only go if you're not vegetarian. Not many vegetarian options.
Make room for me on the bandwagon too. Mooo is one of my favs!
Applebee's. Get that Bourbon Street Steak with an Oreo Shake.
Ok nailed it, thanks. Should we go somewhere else for drinks after or just order another Blue Maui Punch?
6 foot Italian sub, white claw, and anal
That might get uncomfortable maybe switch the order or it might be too much.
White claw is gross
Mooo is good but it’s a steakhouse and tbh you can find a similar restaurant in any city.
In Boston if you want to enjoy local cuisine you want to be eating shellfish. I would suggest Row 34, Mooncusser, Moeca or Banks Fish House.
Hi all. My wife and I will be visiting Boston for our second wedding anniversary next week. I wanted to take her out to a great restaurant for dinner since she’s a big foodie. Italian food is her favorite but she just genuinely eats everything. Looking for a calm, pleasant experience where we can talk and hear each other without having to yell. I’m okay paying extra for quality food/service.
Any advice is greatly appreciated!
For a romantic and old world atmosphere I recommend Mamma Maria in the North End. There are flashier and better restaurants foodwise, but it is simply dreamy. Everyone is charming and the rooms are beautiful! (it is in an old house on an old square...right near Paul Revere's House)
I also like Harvest in Cambridge. Modern but warm decor and impeccable food.
Is this the one with the balcony seating?? It is so romantic.
I second Bar Mezzana as well!! My favorite Italian in the city. SRV is also excellent!
If you’re more interested in the north end, I like carmellina’s and mare as well
Fox and Knife in South Boston!
"Calm, pleasant...without having to yell"?!?!
Myers + Chang, Ostra, and Trattoria Il Panino are my favorite meals in Boston!
I have to second Ostra. Even the complimentary ciabatta is fabulous.
Plus, if your hotel/residence is within two miles of the restaurant they'll send a car for you at no charge.
SRV or fox and the knife
Fellow fine dining friends. Will be in Boston for our anniversary next month and would love suggestions. Are any Barbara Lynch spots worth it? Open to anything you throw at us.
Thank you.
Menton is great as is O Ya if you are into omakase. I hear great things about Tasting Counter too but it’s still on my bucket list
Bar Mezzana is really good.
I was severely underwhelmed at Menton for sure. I’d say Tasting Counter is probably the most solid fine dining option here and it’s a really good value ($300 10 or so course tasting menu, inclusive of beverage, service, and tax)
New York
O Ya is the only restaurant worth mentioning as far as fine dining goes. Tasting Counter is fine, but not as special. Lol yes…when I lived in Boston for two years I would just go to NYC for fine dining after being disappointed by every restaurant I tried in Boston.
I know this is adjacent to questions that are asked here all the time, so necessary apologies.
I've got a significant birthday coming up and my parents will be coming into town around then. They want to take me and my husband out to dinner, and I'm feeling the pressure to pick somewhere good that I might not usually go on my own dime. It doesn't necessarily have to be expensive or fancy, but I'm wondering where folks would go if money weren't an object for one night and they wanted to celebrate the inevitable march of aging.
We're not picky eaters with the caveat that my father usually hates "small plate" restaurants if he leaves feeling like he needs still go eat a pizza. My husband also can't eat beef so a restaurant that's exclusively steak is not the best fit, but fine as long as there's something else good on the menu. TIA!
Tasting Counter in Somerville is an interesting place---it's a 10? course tasting menu. Although ostensibly each guest gets the same food, it's possible to customize the experience when you make a reservation, by indicating that your husband doesn't eat beef (common thing for them).
Another option is No Relation, a nine-seat omakase (sushi tasting menu) restaurant.
Grotto has been a reliable place for us for many years. Great food, not too big a place.
O ya is probably the best restaurant in Boston, if you’re into sushi of course, but realistically unless your parents are absolutely loaded it’s gonna be around 1300 dollar bill for 4 people on their omasake menu. Last time I went that’s all they were offering, it’s absolutely delicious, but just be warned the price tag is very high.
Thanks for the rec and the caveat, we may have found the ceiling where money is actually a object haha.
Yeah but some awesome restaurants that won’t make you avoid looking at bank statements for the next week would be Toro and Kava, which are in the south end, Sarma, Bar Mezzano, Grotto and Abe & Louies. Toro and Kava are my personal favorites, Toro is Spanish tapas and Kava is amazing Greek food. Highly recommend all of those places though.
O ya. Menton. No 9 Park. Mooo. Enjoy!
Fox and the knife
I’m on the lookout for a nice place for my one year anniversary with my girlfriend and was hoping for some recommendations!
I was considering sending it on a really nice steakhouse like Abe and Louie’s or something but I don’t thinking that’s quite in the budget yet, probably trying to keep things in the 100 dollar range.
We’re both in our mid twenties so something fun and sexy but intimate and not full of college kids would be preferable. We also like trying unique and interesting rather than trendy things — e.g I was looking at Bogie’s place but it looks like it’s all booked out.
Thanks for any suggestions!
Papa Geno's in Brockton
Please note, it is spelled Papa Geno's

Taco bell is my go to, but that's bc I'm single.
I said sexy, not SEXY
Haha 😄 😂 Maybe start the day with a nic3 cafe place, like Tatte? Coffee, pastries, yum!! Then perhaps try something you know you both like to eat. I don't know too many fancy place tbh. I'm also mostly broke.
Sarma is dope and easy to keep under $100 unless you drink a lot.
If you want to push the budget, Brassica Kitchen by Forest Hills is incredible and has a great vibe.
Pammys in Cambridge or Mooncusser could be good options
Sarma
Hey everyone,
I’m new to this subreddit and to fine dining in general, but my wife and I have a big anniversary coming up. She has mentioned in passing that she would be interested in a fine dining experience, and I was wondering if anyone knew of any restaurants in Boston that would be suitable. The one thing I should mention is that she is not a fan of sushi or sashimi.
Thanks in advance!
Boston doesn't really have much of a fine dining scene to be honest, especially once you exclude sushi. My partner and I usually travel elsewhere for fine dining. Something like No. 9 Park is probably closest to the classic fine dining experience. If you relax the requirements for fine dining a bit, then some restaurants I really like are Giulia, Sarma, The Eaves (they're temporarily closed though), and Nightshade Noodle Bar. They all have fantastic food, but a more casual vibe.
Thank you! Is there a reason why Boston doesn’t really have a fine dining scene?
Nightshade noodle bar is north of the city but is fantastic if you are adventurous. The Boston dinning scene struggles. A lot has been made of the high cost of liquor licenses here. There is a cap on the number the city allows, so restaurants are forced to buy them from other restaurants at ridiculous prices (500k per license). This makes it challenging for independent restaurants to open here.
There was a period of time between like 2015-2020 where the Boston restaurant scene was pretty serious about bringing up the fine dining scene. When I was a cook at Menton, Kristin Kish had just left after spending a few years lobbying for Michelin to come review Boston. At that time there was L’espalier, Menton, No 9 Park, Tasting Counter, all of which I think would have deserved some Michelin praise. Since then, all but No 9 Park have closed. My theory is that Boston is a bit too meat and potatoes. None of those restaurants were getting booked out on a night to night basis and the prices were outrageous. People in Boston just seem like they’d rather go to the nice mid tier restaurants like Toro, Oleana, Alden and Harlow etc.
If you want like “true” fine dining you could do a Barbara Lynch place like Menton or No.9 Park or Tasting Counter. Oleana is a bit more casual and not so much an “experience” but would also be a great option
I had a great time there about 5 years ago, I still dream about the chilled cantaloupe lobster soup…
Oleana is not what it used to be with the new menu - I’d skip that.
I highly recommend Nightshade Noodle Bar in Lynn if you have a car. They do an insanely good tasting menu. Asta is also good.
Asta or Mooncusser if you want a tasting menu. For a la carte, I enjoy Grill 23, Deauxave, and La Voile for their wine lists
Went to Mooncusser last month and had a wonderful experience if you are looking for a tasting menu.
My wife and I had our wedding at Mistral and it was wonderful. We’ve been back a couple of times since; consistently very good.
I'll add a +1 to Oleana. The lemon chicken dish, hummus and baked alaska are particularly delicious although I enjoyed just about everything else that I've tried there.
Looking for a restaurant to take my parents out to for their 40th anniversary. Can be anywhere on the south shore since we are pretty central. Looking for a place a little on the fancier side!
Thanks for all the recs! We will definitely pick one of these…it’s nice to try someplace new!
Tosca, Alma Nove, Square Cafe
Alba
Tosca.
Alba's, Windsor House, The Oysterman, Salt Society, and the Quarry are all of my favorites for the South Shore.
If you want to go a little south Fisherman's view in Sandwich is also fantastic.
