TL;DR
Back Bay and Fenway Area
For those looking to stay near the Back Bay or Fenway area, several options stand out. Deuxave is frequently recommended for its cozy vibe and fantastic food, making it ideal for a classy night out [1:9]. Another option is Sorellina, known for its pillars and dark mood lighting, providing a romantic backdrop for any special occasion
[3:2]. If you're interested in Asian fusion, Tiger Mama offers a quieter experience during weekdays with great food and drinks
[1:4].
Beacon Hill and Surroundings
In Beacon Hill, Ma Maison is a small French bistro that offers an intimate dining experience without breaking the bank [5:1]. Another affordable yet romantic option is 75 Chestnut, which provides a charming atmosphere just off Charles Street
[5:2].
Unique Dining Experiences
For something a bit different, consider Grotto, which offers a cozy feel and quality Italian food at reasonable prices. It's conveniently located near the Common garage, making it accessible if you're exploring the city [1:2]. Additionally, Cicada in Cambridge is a hole-in-the-wall spot known for its delicious food and amazing ambiance, perfect for a romantic dinner
[2:2].
Picnic Options
If you prefer a more casual and budget-friendly option, consider a picnic on the Esplanade. This can be a romantic and personalized experience, especially if you prepare a charcuterie board and bring a bottle of wine [5:7]. The Charles River Park is another lovely spot for a picnic, offering beautiful views and a serene environment
[2:1].
These recommendations cater to a variety of tastes and budgets, ensuring you'll find the perfect spot for a romantic evening in Boston.
Long-time lurker and Masshole, I need some help! Going on a date to the Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum, and I'm trying to figure out where to take my date for a romantic dinner after. I've looked at a lot of top restaurants list, and I'm looking for more of a quiet, intimate feel, not just fancy for the sake of it. I guess more Mida than Meritage. Also would love to stay in the back bay/fenway, but open to anywhere really. I'd love some suggestions, there are so many options it's almost overwhelming. Thanks in advance for the help!
Grotto has a cozy feel to it and it's not as steep price-wise as some of the North End places but you'll get quality food.
edit: very easily walkable from the Common garage. Drive in and park there, take the green line to the museum, green line back and walk to Grotto, easy walk back to the car.
What day of the week? Tiger Mama can be quiet Mon thru THursday - go sit at the Tiki Bar or ask for a table adjoining the bar against the wall - great Asian fusion food and drinks.
Citizen's for American Pub fare and great drinks
Basho for Sushi - will be very quiet
Orfano - upscale italian in the Pierce Building next to sweet cheeks
nathalie- a wine bar, not much food - all these are on Boylston St, a short walk away from ISGM.
Thanks for these. Thinking about parking close to Boylston, so this would work out well. Definitely going to check out the menus
No worries! Look at Harlo for parking, entrance on Kilmarnock, left from Boylston (as you head towards Longwood), They have specials on weekdays and weekends.
and as someone else suggested Audubon - great spot.
and if your date is going well, and you'll want to extend the night - Hojoko and it's record room out front is great spot as well
As a side note, good call on the Gardner museum for a date. I took my wife there for V Day last year and she loved it. The courtyard is so pretty and romantic
Thanks man! I've been there before and was fascinated with how unique it is. Had to go back, and definitely a fun place for a date.
Kinda expensive but I would recommend Deuxave
Deuxave was on all the lists I've seen. I'm hoping to find somewhere a little more low-key and cozy, but this is definitely on my list for a classy night out.
I can also say Deuxave was pretty cozy when I ate there. Its nice and dark and the food is fantastic
In person Duexave has a pretty cozy vibe - it's pretty small and there's cozy/cool lighting/architecture
Waiting for the Papa Genos in Brockton comments to roll in
Wife and I are visiting your fine city in about 3 weeks time, staying in Seaport, but will be spending plenty of time in the city and even heading to Salem for a day. What are your best romantic spots or activities in the city to do? Anything from low-budget/free to a little more high-class is up for consideration. Trying to impress my lady! :)
Very romantic hole in the wall spot is Cicada in Cambridge for dinner specifically. It’s a small space, so check if there’s reservations, but the food is affordable and SO delicious, and the ambiance is amazing!
bistro du midi is quite romantic setting, the price reflects accordingly
Provincetown Ferry is a classic day trip, though pricey.
Tall ships is cool
The Charles River esplanade (owls nest beer garden is a fun lil spot)
Does she like pizza? I know a perfect date spot.
Abso-fuckin-lutely!
Papa Gino’s in Brockton
Charles River Park is pretty nice on the Boston side. I picnic there would be sweet, but remember it gets hot during midday. Cost is free except for maybe parking.
Awesome! She LOVES a good picnic, that scores some points for sure. Good tip on the weather, even the middle of Sep. will be hot? We're there the 14th-21st. We are from Texas, so we get enough of the heat, but used to it.
Ah welcome! It probably won't be that hot by then but check the weather.
it’ll be bearable
My one year wedding anniversary is coming up in November and I am trying to get ahead of the game. Where would people recommend the most romantic restaurants would be in Boston? Any answers appreciated!
My husband and I really enjoyed Sorellina in Back Bay/Copley for one of our anniversaries. Lots of pillars and dark mood lighting if you’re into that, and tasty! Same owners as Mistral, which is also great and I see recommended a lot, but I personally preferred sorellina’s deserts :)
Mistral and Sorrellina are great choices!
I just had a very nice date night at June Bug in Somerville! Althea in central square is also a great date night spot
seconding junebug and also backbar (nearby) for a pre/post-dinner drink if you’re looking for a lowkey pairing.
but the real standout is sarma! if you mention it’s your anniversary in your reservation, they’ll seat you at their “special anniversary table” — a cozy corner booth where you can sit side by side. a thoughtful touch we really appreciated!
Highly recommend Ma Maison in Beacon Hill. Quaint and intimate French restaurant.
Heard good things was definitely on my list cheers!

Ah that answers that! Thanks!
I’m planning on taking my boyfriend to dinner for his birthday (which is close to Christmas) and was looking for a couple restaurant recommendations. Really trying to find something with that classic vibe, comfortable seating, nice lighting, yummy food, and not egregiously expensive. Maybe Back Bay area? Bonus points if the restaurant makes me feel like I’m in a Nancy Meyers film.
Once you said not egregiously expensive you eliminated 90% of the places that would fit the bill and don't completely suck.
guess i’m looking for that 10%!
Mamma Maria. North square looks pretty this time of year
What is egregiously expensive to you? Overpriced/bad value? Or do you have a budget?
I just mean not paying $100 for an 8oz filet. Willing to spend money but not “Moo…” money
Kowloon?
You beat me to it!
Sharpen those elbows
Sharpen those stabbing knives.
two thoughts:
foundry on elm in somerville, or Prima in Charlestown, both have cozy booth brassiere vibes and prima has a fireplace
Hi guys! I'm looking to surprise my partner with a romantic dinner somewhere within walking distance of the Esplanade that is not seafood based (otherwise not too picky on the cuisine). I'm considering areas like Back Bay, Beacon Hill, or something of the sort. I'm a broke college kid so it can't be anywhere tooooo high end, while hopefully still having a romantic atmosphere. I found the restaurant Lolita online and I loved the moody vibe it has, but I'm just looking to see if anyone has other ideas. Thanks!
75 Chestnut St., just off Charles St. Is very nice and not expensive.
Lolita is nice. Just don't go on a weekend night.
Nightshift Brewing has a beer garden on the Esplanade. You can see the food truck schedule here. You would need to be 21+, they check.
I would do a picnic honestly. Impress her with your charcuterie board skills. A blanket, a bottle of wine, a charcuterie board, and snuggles while watching the sunset….
100% this. If they are near Back Bay too, they could go to "The Smallest Trader Joe's in the Universe" and get stuff there. Maybe a little gimmicky and not as fancy as charcuterie but definitely good for the budget.
I agree with this suggestion. I've done picnics on the esplanade.
this is the move and also IMO is usually seen as more impressive to dates. Go to Formaggio and get a board made and bam, you're gtg.
Ma Maison on Cambridge St off Beacon Hill is a small French bistro that is not expensive for the area. It's very French and could be an option. That being said, I think the picnic option suggested above is the best.
I will be going to Boston in October and plan to propose to my significant other of 10 years. Does any one know of any nice restaurants in Boston? Price is not an issue. Thanks in advance!
Edit: Thank you everyone for the great suggestions! I will look more into this when I get home from work. :)
What's your vibe? Are you young, city-dwelling folks who keep trendy and like going to hip "best of town up-and-comers? types? Are you more suburban folks who like the classics done great (steak house, italian pastas, etc. in restaurants that have been around for a few decades?).
Are you looking for a "Boston Classic" meal? Or, something that's more like in line with the best meal you two enjoy, and you'll have that kind of meal in Boston?

There are so many options/directions to go in - if you provide some parameters, I can make some recs!
We are on the younger side. My boyfriend (soon to be fiancé) really loves lobster. Lobster bisque is his favorite food. He also really likes Connecticut lobster rolls. If you of any good places with lobster bisque, let me know!
Row 34 for the buttered lobster roll. It is a great restaurant but wouldn’t say it’s super romantic.
Neptune Oyster - incredible lobster roll and a charming space. Plus you can walk around the North End after and get pastries.
Totally seconding the Row 34 recommendation in the Seaport. One of the best raw bars in town and also a great seafood menu. It's upscale but not insanely expensive. It's in a super fun neighborhood for visiting. You can eat dinner then find tons of other spots to enjoy a celebratory cocktail or bar hop. It's about a ten minute walk to the pathway on the water of Boston harbor. You could dinner at row 34. Walk to the water after the meal and propose with the Boston skylines and Boston harbor in the background
Can’t recommend Talulla enough, if you’re willing to go out further to Cambridge. It’s very small/intimate (12 tables), has made it into several of the “most romantic restaurants in Boston” lists. The chef owns the restaurant and his wife is the sommelier. Giulia (also in Cambridge) is also phenomenal food, atmosphere, and service, although difficult to get reservations.
Fully seconded! I took my boyfriend to Tallula for his birthday and we got the tasting menu with the wine pairing. He absolutely loved it and said it set a new bar for him (from a French man with high standards). It's definitely romantic/intimate, but laid back. Every person seems excited for you to try the food. They're great with dietary restrictions, they made a different sauce for me (no live cultures) with ease and it was delicious. I didn't have a hard time getting a dinner reservation, but I booked a week or two out.
Tallula is a great answer and was my first thought. The food is great and it has a chill vibe while also coming off as higher end (which the food and beverage certainly are). I can help facilitate a reservation if you need help in any way, but usually there is availability
I think Sarma is the no-brainer option. It's relatively new (5ish years?). It consistently wins best of boston. If there's a national/international list of "best restaurants in each state, etc.) - it's almost always the one that is selected.
It's just a really great spot - with a awesome atmosphere. It's not formal or pretentious. The only downside is that it's not in the most walkable neighborhood. You'll definitely need to cab there/back.

I think u/Zealousideal_Foot562 makes all great recommendations as well. I'd just add:
Does she likes books? You can make reservations for hight tea in the boston library and its quite cute the surroundings of the library are very beautiful too :)
If your visiting Boston, you are probably gonna want to go to Boston restaurants like Mariel, Fox and knife, toro, Yvonne’s, prezza,
Don’t get suckered in by people telling you to leave Boston to go to neighborhoods outside of Boston. They really aren’t as good as the good places in Boston and as a tourist, I assure you that you want to be hanging out in Seaport, back bay, north end, downtown, Faneuil hall. And if you want a more neighborhood Boston feel, South Boston and South End.
Papa Geno's in Brockton is where you go for your first date, though. Gotta keep it reserved for that early relationship vibe.
885 Belmont in Brockton is a quiet, out-of-the-way Italian joint that is perfect for romantic dining.
Mamma Maria's in Boston's North End. It has a small intimate room for two above the front door. Great views and fine Italian cuisine. I got engaged in that room twenty five years ago. Good Luck!
This was my favorite suggestion as it fit our needs. Unfortunately, they told us that they do not book that room and gave me a hard time as if it wasn't listed right on their website as a private room lol
Dali has some tables tucked away in semi private alcoves. The balcony at Tresca in the north end is private and looks romantic. Never eaten there so I can’t speak to the food.
Check with Menton. They have a chef's room. I think it's generally for 6-10 people but they might be able to just put in a smaller table to create the effect.
It is super-cool in there, but not especially romantic or private (everyone in the kitchen can see into the chef's-table room -- although they're working and generally ignore you!). You have to walk through the whole kitchen if you need to use the bathroom. There is also a hefty minimum spend.
I have a date with someone a really care about this Friday and want to bring her somewhere we haven't been before. What are your recommendations for anything holiday related or a place that has good food or a fun activity with a romantic ambiance? So what do you say /r/boston can you help me out?
If you don't mind bundling up a little I always recommend the Harbor Walk in EB from Piers to Lo Presti, a cocktail at Reel House and dinner at Rino's or Angela's.
Was going to suggest Rino’s!
Silhouette Lounge
Great suggestion but we have already been there. Wanted to try something new. Thanks though.
Yeah my buddy's death metal band is playing there in a couple days he can hook you up with free pretzels
Hell yeah brother. How about a free hot dog or two as well?
Get stuck in line at snowport or SoWA, learn about her patience levels, and she learns about yours. If you guys make it thru without losing your shit... It's only upside from there.
Actually did that a few weeks ago at Snowport. Met up in line and she’d brought us both espresso martinis in coffee cups. Hung out and had a drink in line. We were only in the market for like 15 min before saying fuck this and going to get dinner/drinks. It was nice.
To answer OP’s question…Taco Bell Cantina
Ww have done taco bell more times than I care to admit. :)
Papa Geno's [sic] in Brockton.
Been there done that. I love their cheesy bread sticks
Beehive ( good food and jazz ) , Grace by Nia great food and jazz and you ll be in walking distance from kings bowling alley and a dart bar . Hope this helps. Be sure to call sometimes they ll squeeze in if online says there full.
Hi all. My wife and I will be visiting Boston for our second wedding anniversary next week. I wanted to take her out to a great restaurant for dinner since she’s a big foodie. Italian food is her favorite but she just genuinely eats everything. Looking for a calm, pleasant experience where we can talk and hear each other without having to yell. I’m okay paying extra for quality food/service.
Any advice is greatly appreciated!
Myers + Chang, Ostra, and Trattoria Il Panino are my favorite meals in Boston!
I have to second Ostra. Even the complimentary ciabatta is fabulous.
Plus, if your hotel/residence is within two miles of the restaurant they'll send a car for you at no charge.
I second Bar Mezzana as well!! My favorite Italian in the city. SRV is also excellent!
If you’re more interested in the north end, I like carmellina’s and mare as well
Fox and Knife in South Boston!
"Calm, pleasant...without having to yell"?!?!
For a romantic and old world atmosphere I recommend Mamma Maria in the North End. There are flashier and better restaurants foodwise, but it is simply dreamy. Everyone is charming and the rooms are beautiful! (it is in an old house on an old square...right near Paul Revere's House)
I also like Harvest in Cambridge. Modern but warm decor and impeccable food.
Is this the one with the balcony seating?? It is so romantic.
SRV or fox and the knife
Willing to drive outside of the city, too!
I hear that the Papa Geno's in Brockton is sure to put anyone in the mood
Is it good for first dates?
Seconding this! Love it there
Holy crap! This is PERFECT! Definitely the vibe I was looking for and amazing menu! Thank you!
Dunks in Government Center.
Maverick Square*
Definitely more romantic than the Ruggles Dunks.
Grotto on Beacon hill
Thank you! I really appreciate the recommendation!
You got it! Did you go?
And the best Italian imo
Taco Bell in DTX
