Best Places to Buy Refurbished Laptops

TL;DR

  • Trusted options include Apple, Newegg, and local computer repair shops.
  • eBay and Amazon Renewed can be good if you research sellers thoroughly.
  • Specialized sites like Other World Computing or Back Market offer warranties.

eBay and Amazon Renewed

eBay is a popular choice for refurbished laptops. It's recommended to buy from sellers with high ratings and extensive positive reviews [1:3], [4:1]. Many sellers are professional IT asset disposal companies, which adds a layer of trust [1:1]. Amazon Renewed is mentioned frequently but has mixed reviews; some users advise caution [3:4].

Manufacturer Direct Outlets

Several commenters recommend buying directly from manufacturer outlets. Lenovo's online outlet has been praised for reliable refurbished laptops [1:2]. Apple sells refurbished MacBooks with the same warranty as new ones, making it a safe option [2:2], [2:5]. Dell also offers refurbished models on their website [3:5].

Specialized Refurbished Retailers

Other World Computing (macsales.com) is recommended for purchasing refurbished Macs [2:3]. Newegg is another trusted site for refurbished electronics, offering good pricing and customer service [3:1], [3:3]. Back Market acts as a storefront for refurbishers who agree to its terms, offering a 12-month warranty [3:2].

Local and Physical Stores

Local computer repair shops sometimes sell refurbished laptops, allowing you to see the product in person and often providing a small warranty [2:1]. Micro Center is suggested for those in the US looking for open box or refurbished deals [4:2]. Best Buy's Geek Squad refurbished section has been positively reviewed for quality and pricing [3:6], [4:5].

Additional Tips

When buying refurbished, it's crucial to check details like battery cycles and cosmetic condition [5:2]. Platforms that allow sorting by warranty or condition can save time and help avoid sketchy listings [5:1]. Always ensure that the seller provides clear return and warranty policies [5:3].

ORIGINAL POST

I want to buy a refurbished laptop but I'm not sure where to start. I’ve checked eBay and Amazon Renewed, but I’m wondering if there are better places people actually trust.

Any websites or tips you would recommend? Just trying to get a good deal.

I don't know what's best, but I've purchased two Lenovo refurbished laptops over the years - they have an outlet online. I never had issues with either purchase.

ebay with extensive research in the seller's reviews as sellers not as buyers.

It is only recommended if you have a very low budget though, what kind of budget are we working with ?

eBay sellers that sells a large number of refurbished/used business laptops are generally professional IT asset disposal companies and are mostly trustworthy-- they don't really pay much, if anything, for the used hardware, so they are pretty good about returns if anything goes wrong. eBay also has a strong buyer protection policy, but I havent had to dispute stuff through eBay.

What kind of laptop model and price range are you looking at?

When it comes to used hardware, a lot the listings are all over the place when it comes to pricing. So, you can find some very good deals, and there are also some ridiculously priced listings, which you can just ignore if you know what you are doing. Gotta do your research, don't buy the first listing that pops up on eBay or Amazon.

I haven't bought anything from Amazon Renewed, but my impression is that their pricing isn't nearly as good-- likely because Amazon charges sellers a lot for using their Prime service.

Where can I buy a legit refurbished MacBook?

Posted by TheDearlyt · in r/Laptop · 1 month ago

I need to replace my current laptop and I’m thinking of getting a refurbished MacBook to save some money, but I’m not sure where the best place to buy one is.

I’ve seen some listings on random sites, but I’m worried about getting scammed or ending up with a laptop in bad condition. Are there any trusted online shops you’ve personally bought from?

Apple sells refurbs, and they actually come with the same warranty as a new one. Plus, you can still buy AppleCare.

In the market for a new laptop. Has anyone had a markedly better or worse experience with Amazon's "Renewed" electronics and Best Buy's Geek-Squad Refurbished? Or a third option I'm not considering?

Back Market is another online site. Sells refurb electronics with 12-month warranty. Site seems to act like a storefront for refurbishers who agree to the BM terms. I bought a Samsung S10 there a couple years ago and was very pleased.

Probably would have bought my current phone there, too, but Samsung had an incredible trade in deal toward a new A54 5G.

Newegg.com has been my go-to for refurbished electronics for several years now. Good pricing, everything I've bought has worked, and customer service was great on an item I never received.

I found a refurbished laptop at Best Buy one day, it was a $1300 gaming laptop and I paid $900. It worked perfectly fine - better than expected, actually - and I've never had a problem with it. So that's an option.

I got my MacBook Air (M1) from a certified refurbisher and it’s been running like new for over a year now. Battery health was at 98% and it came with a 1-year warranty. I saved around $300 compared to Apple’s own refurb store. As long as you’re buying from someone reputable with clear return/warranty policies, it’s honestly a great way to go.

Refurbished doesn't always mean good. Some places will not even turn them on and just clean them or test but not clean them. Sometimes they will get them used and not clean or work on them then place them in a box and call it refurbished. I would honestly go used from an e-Cycling company or something as they will actually test them and more than likely clean them or tell you what you're in for compared to Refurbished with a Stock image from Google. But, I would honestly go with Apple Directly or VIP outlet or eBay for Refurbished.

Where should I buy a refurbished laptop?

Posted by [deleted] · in r/AskUK · 8 months ago

Looking to buy a new laptop for work/streaming. I want a 2nd hand/refurbished one for various reasons.

I’ve heard really mixed things about Backmarket and other similar retailers.

I don’t know anything about technology, I’m not fussed on OS or manufacturer. I just want something fairly lightweight/slim, with a decent battery life and doesn’t cost the Earth.

Any recommendations of retailers or specific laptops would be much appreciated.

I've got most of mine, which is 6 out of 7 now over the years, from eBay.

Refurb business sellers seem generally reliable, and 'one careful owner' types certainly are.

I think refurb shops tend to err on the side of caution. I've only ever bought 'excellent' and 'very good' returns and I'm convinced a big percentage of them are brand new, probably just open box.

When it comes to phones, I am with 3 and the man in the shop told me that if I ever needed a new phone, to go to Music Magpie and 90+% of the 'refurb' ones would be open box- distance sold and returned from change of mind during the allowed cooling off period.

But the stuff I buy for myself tends to be 5+ years old so can't be unused.

I bought direct from dell, I think it was the ‘Dell Outlet’. The machine was a better spec than anything you could buy new (presumably specced up for a business customer), and the warranty was handled well. They sent an engineer out to my house to replace the motherboard with no quibbling.

eBay - you can get something refurbished with a warranty, ThinkPad laptops are known for lasting forever and having lots of spare parts available. Was going to buy one that way until I got my 2013 laptop to stop crashing. You can filter search results by screen size, ram, etc so fine tune it to what need.

If you meet income requirements & are in the US, PC's for people have refurbished laptops. Amazon is another source, I suggest this because it's guaranteed.

If you buy used from something less reputable, I'd run UBCD to check it, preferably before buying. www.ultimatebootcd.com

I totally agree-- reputable eBay sellers are a good place to look.

Here's Fujitsu's eBay store, they auction off what appears to be laptops off business leases here. If you don't need the latest and greatest, this is a good place to look since it's direct from the company that makes the laptops: http://www.ebaystores.com/Fujitsu-Computer-Store

When a machine I bought from them had screen issues after a week or so, the promptly responded to my request and had it repaired.

Here's another seller I've bought from. They seem to have a lot of off-lease business laptops, too. https://www.ebay.com/usr/tech-trading?_trksid=p2057872.m2749.l2754

(falo do Brasil)

AI Answer

best places to buy refurbished laptops

Key Considerations for Buying Refurbished Laptops:

  1. Reputable Retailers: Purchase from well-known retailers or manufacturers that offer certified refurbished products. This ensures quality and reliability. Some trusted options include:

    • Amazon Renewed
    • Best Buy
    • Newegg
    • Manufacturer Websites (e.g., Dell Outlet, Apple Certified Refurbished)
  2. Warranty and Return Policy: Check for a warranty (ideally 1 year or more) and a flexible return policy. This provides peace of mind in case the laptop has issues.

  3. Condition Grades: Understand the grading system (e.g., Grade A, B, C) used by sellers to describe the condition of the laptop. Grade A typically means "like new," while Grade B may have minor cosmetic flaws.

  4. Specifications: Ensure the refurbished laptop meets your needs in terms of performance (CPU, RAM, storage) and compatibility with software you plan to use.

  5. Customer Reviews: Look for reviews and ratings of the seller and the specific laptop model to gauge overall satisfaction and reliability.

Recommendations:

  • Apple Certified Refurbished: If you're looking for a Mac, this is one of the best places to buy, as Apple provides a full warranty and quality assurance.
  • Dell Outlet: Great for Windows laptops, offering a wide selection of refurbished models with good warranties.
  • eBay: Look for sellers with high ratings and positive feedback, but be cautious and check return policies.

By focusing on reputable sources and understanding the condition and warranty, you can find a great refurbished laptop that fits your needs and budget.
