TL;DR Refurbished electronics from Best Buy generally come with a limited warranty, but the specifics can vary depending on the product and whether it is Geek Squad certified. Manufacturer warranties might not apply unless specified.
Best Buy's Refurbished Products
Best Buy offers refurbished products that are either Geek Squad certified or regular refurbished items. Geek Squad certified items undergo a more rigorous testing process compared to regular refurbished items, which may only receive basic checks [1:1]. However, the reliability of Geek Squad refurbished items can be hit or miss, with some users reporting issues
[2:5].
Warranty Details
The warranty for refurbished items at Best Buy can differ. Generally, refurbished items do not carry the original manufacturer's warranty unless explicitly stated. For example, one user noted that Epson provides a two-year warranty on their refurbished projectors, but this warranty does not apply when purchased through Best Buy [3:1]. Best Buy itself typically offers a 14-day return policy for refurbished items, which is shorter than Amazon's 30-day return policy for similar products
[2:1].
Return Policy
Best Buy has a straightforward return policy, allowing returns within 14 days of purchase. However, there have been instances where store managers refused returns on damaged refurb items, suggesting trying another store or contacting corporate for resolution [4:1].
Open Box vs. Refurbished
It's important to differentiate between open box and refurbished items. Open box items at Best Buy often retain the manufacturer’s warranty starting from the date of your purchase, while refurbished items may not [5:1]. Open box items are generally seen as more reliable compared to refurbished ones
[2:5].
Recommendations
When considering purchasing refurbished electronics from Best Buy, it's advisable to check the specific warranty details provided at the point of sale. If a longer warranty period is crucial, consider buying directly from the manufacturer if they offer extended warranties on refurbished items. Additionally, ensure you understand the return policy and inspect the item thoroughly upon receipt to avoid any potential issues.
Hi everyone, my son‘s iPad that I bought refurbished for Christmas for him just stopped working yesterday morning. We took it to the Apple Store and after running all the tests, the tech said that the display must be shot. It’s out of the Amazon marketplace seller’s warranty date, so they aren’t being any help. I was looking online at the Apple refurbished store and they don’t have what we were looking for, but now I am looking at Best Buy. There are two refurbished options, one is Apple certified geek squad and the other one is Apple certified. The geek squad option is not available for the item we are looking at, but does anyone have experience with Best Buy refurbished? It doesn’t say anything about it being from a marketplace or a third-party seller
Best Buy doesn’t have any 3rd party sellers so you don’t have to worry about that. I’ve bought a few refurbished items fromnBest Buy over the years. GeekSquad refurbished items are usually returned or repaired items that go through a specific test and check process and if there’s any accessories missing they replace them. Regular refurbished items are usually returns that get a once over, basic checks and put up for resale. Might be missing some box and accessories. Consider this equal to “used” really.
I’ve had good luck with both these options. I’ve gotten headphones and SSD from geek squad refurb and they came with all accessories and looked to be nearly new. The regular stuff quality ran between looking new or missing stuff like boxes and manuals, maybe a little scuff here and there, but all worked fine.
Apple also has some stealthy refurb items that are sold by Best Buy and Micro Center, but are actually fully refurbished by Apple themselves. You can usually spot them because they have a 1ye warranty instead of the usual 90 day.
As of August 2025 third party sellers are now allowed to sell on Best Buy, but they’re vetted and their name should be listed, and they have to match Best Buy return policy, and you only have to bring the device back to the store and deal only with BB if there’s an issue
Thanks for the info! Very helpful
I have bought refurbished on Amazon and Best Buy. I like their easy return policies, though the regular one for BB is pretty short. On Amazon, I bought a iPhone SE 2 gen June 1, 2025 as a back up. I made sure it was sold by Amazon and not a dealer using Amazon. Walmart apparently if ordered online has zero warranty they will honor. I didn’t order from Walmart after reading the horror stories in the customer reviews.
Yikes, I will make sure not to order from Walmart. Our last two devices before this were bought from Amazon, which is why I thought there wouldn’t be an issue. Clearly I was mistaken and should’ve bought the warranty. Definitely won’t be making that mistake again. I’m considering going the Best Buy route since I’ll be able to pick it up in store and open it with them so that there aren’t any issues
We have purchased refurb electronics from Amazon for years, without any issues.
I bought a refurb Apple Watch, zero problems.
I bought a refurbished Acer laptop from them a few years ago. Other than the minor scratch it had on the outside, it was basically brand new. I had that thing for a few years. They don’t sell third-party that I’ve ever seen.
They do now…..as of August
Thanks for the response!
I just bought this exact same spec macbook from Best Buy refurbished. I paid $850 for it. Most definitely worth the price.
Best Buy has a return policy of 2 weeks. When bought new, the new owner has two weeks to decide if they like it or not. I would think you have 2 weeks as well after purchase.
Best buy had it on sale for $850? If so, wow! That is a great deal
Yeah, I didn't even intend on buying a computer that day. I was checking out refurbished macs and saw that one. There is some of the finish coming off the front of the laptop from what looked to be a small sticker or something, but that was the only mishap with the computer. Even the Best Buy employees were surprised at how good of condition it was in. One of them said, "If I would have known we had this computer for this price I would have bought it". lol
If it's a Geeksquad refurb it's very hit or miss. I've had better luck with their "open box" models. Got an M3 Pro last July for $600 off and it was virtually brand new.
Same, only refurbs id get would be from apple or microcenter. Open box is definitely more reliable from best buy, I got a m3 Max for just over 2k and its practically brand new.
It's a used laptop. "Refurbishing" consists of cleaning it. They have a good return policy.
Can echo this. They will clean it, reset it (if it wasn’t already) and test it to make sure it powers on. That is it.
Best Buy’s return policy isn’t as good as Amazon (30 days for Amazon vs 14 for Best Buy), but I have NEVER had an issue with returns with Best Buy. Honestly, they are great and I generally prefer it over Amazon any day
Refurbished on Amazon is 90 days btw
It’s basically a lottery. I once bought a refurbished Macbook from them with a deep dent on one of the corners. Returned it within an hour. Professionally inspected my ass
It also says buy new : $1129.99 below the pricing. Did you try clicking there and see if the new sealed has same pricing?
Takes me to the same page. Open box for this model is 1500 so not worth it as new m4 costs the same.
Steal of a deal imo
Apologies if this is not the right sub to ask this..
So I am eyeing for one projector. BestBuy have it, refurbished. If I buy from BestBuy I will get it delivered in 2 days. If I buy it from Epson I will get it in a week. Epson gives 2 years warranty on refurbished projectors. If I buy it from BestBuy will I still have this warranty.. Say that refurbished projector stops working after 90 days ...
Refurbished no, open box yes
ohk... it says refurbished on BB site. I will skip it then.
Hello, are Best Buy stores supposed to take refurb returns? Had an issue with a damaged refurb monitor I received via online order and store manager refused return and said Best Buy stores can’t return geek squad products
You can return it. The problem is they probably just trying to blame you for it being broken. If not try another store or contact corporate for them to send a prepaid label.
If you buy an open box unit from Best Buy, does the warranty start from the first purchase(ie original owner) or from the open box purchase?
You have a 1-year warranty from your purchase
For a monitor that had 3 year protection? I registered it and it gave me about 2.5y of warranty
Help chat said it comes with same warranty as a brand new product. I am just cross checking here if anyone has encountered otherwise, after burying open box from best buy. Thanks
I would ask best buy but also if you can get the serial number ask Samsung to get confirmation on what best buy says.
Is this common.. Will bestbuy be able to give a serial number? Also, generally warranty is valid from date of purchase. In the case of open box, is the date of purchase for warranty that of the "final purchasers" date of purchase!
I did some digging on this. It typically depends on the product you are getting... But best buy usually does good by the customer within a certain period of time. Also buy a product in excellent condition due to if there was an issue it's most likely already been fixed. When you get an open box you should be able to inspect the item and most likely collect the serial number. Your best way of receiving warranty details would be from best buy tho.
So my dad was having issues with his equipment, and I helped him with the warranty process but instead of returning the old kit to Starlink like I told him, he got confused and returned it back to Best Buy 🤦♂️ I don’t even know how they allowed him to return it, he was weeks passed the return policy.
So now we have our money back, and replacement equipment delivered today.
How should we proceed?
Many many moons ago I worked for Circuit City as a teen. In our system if we looked it up there was a code RTV..Return To Vendor. The City had deals set up for infinite return of product for repair..depended on the manufacture. Pretty sure Starlink set up something like that. All of there dishes unless thoroughly destroyed probably can be repaired or salvaged for parts. Its how extended warranties worked. Return a Sony TV from 3 years ago. We simply gave you a credit for what you paid you go get whatever. Company returns to Sony gets X amount for the item.
They in turn rip it apart salvage and fix returned items with salvaged parts selling it as refurbished. Everyone makes money everyone wins.
😂 something my dad would do.
They’ll be able to track it all, don’t worry. The onus is on BestBuy now because they received the product back.
Did you explain it in the ticket that you opened to get the replacement equipment? Either they will work it out/get your proof of return and make you pay for the new equipment or they will charge you for not returning your equipment whenever that system realizes it was never received...
Yeah, at worst they charge you for the replacement kit, so you're back where you started, definitely let them know what happened though.
Support ticket time
If he has any of the extended warranty stuff from Best buy then it's fine. I have it for my computer and it applies to anything else I buy from them.
Is there people that buy expensive electronics such as a tv and purchase the extended warranty just to return it/ exchange it right before the 2 years is up So they can keep upgrading electronics for cheaper? Does it flag you or deny you at some point
Is there any reason not to ?
Short version Buy a tv with the GSP 2 year warranty return it 1.5 years later to buy a new model ? Just wondering if it happens/ is possible Thanks
Yeah... that's not how geek squad protection works on larger items like TVs and appliances.
Tvs 43” and up is in home servicing, and is determined by an agent if it can be fixed or not.
I figured I personally have a friend that gets the astro headsets with the gsp and exchanges them for the new ones as they come out I guess for the super expensive items it's not possible
Headphones make sense but how does one do that for a TV or a big ass refrigerator
To be honest, depending on the brand, headphones can easily be more expensive than a TV.
Yeah that's more on the lines of what I was thinking was possible!
You...you don’t get an extended return policy, you get a replacement plan for the same item.
Now, I’ve seen people (me included) that get a replacement plan on a monitor or headphones, and when it’s about to expire you use the plan to get a brand new pair. The plans usually cover wear and tear/use.
I was curious, does extended warranty cover renewed or refurbished items?
I am assuming not.
Check the terms of the card, frequently they do if the item comes with a warranty.
I’m gonna be straight with you. I’m always never mentioned it and acted like the item was a new item. Unless otherwise stated in the invoice. Most of the time it isn’t stated.
Great to hear. Thanks
Citi at least does not cover refurbished items.
That was the card i was going to use, to get the 2 years 😭
I Purchased an Amazon Fire TV back in 2018 with a 4 year warranty. (Amazon - Fire TV with 4K Ultra HD and Alexa Voice Remote - Black Model:B01N32NCPM SKU:6023200) Its uses a standard Micro USB Cable, but its probably in the original box as I have plenty of cables I just use. The issue is the Amazon Fire TV has a massive lag to it, and is slow as hell. What's needed to do an warranty? Also if they don't sell this specific one anymore, what would they do? Do they need the original box and cable? I'm not sure if Amazon has their own branded cables. I can't find the box or cable, but probably could if I made a day outta it.
Edit: previous comment deleted. TVs are sent out for repair first.
Not correct. Tv plans are for repair initially - and compensation for a COMPARABLE unit if deemed to be replaced. It is not always what the customer paid.
Comparable not to exceed original price paid. Its the general flaw of Black Friday shopping
My mistake. I read fire tv and assumed stick/cube/streaming media. Above is correct
