TL;DR
Popular European Cities
London, Barcelona, and Madrid are frequently mentioned as excellent destinations for celebrating New Year's Eve due to their vibrant atmospheres and numerous events [1:1]. Vienna is another popular choice, especially for those who enjoy classical music and elegant festivities
[1:4]. These cities offer a range of activities and are known for their lively New Year's Eve celebrations.
Eastern European Destinations
For those interested in exploring Eastern Europe, Brasov in Romania is highlighted as a lively destination during the holidays, with open restaurants, shops, and Christmas markets [2:1]. Kraków is also mentioned, though it may be quieter on major holidays due to its Catholic traditions
[2:4]. Both cities provide a blend of cultural experiences and natural beauty.
Alternative Belgian Cities
While Brussels and Bruges are well-known, they might not be the best choices for New Year's Eve. Some locals suggest that Brussels can be overcrowded and overpriced, with limited options in the city center [5:6]. Bruges is described as being overrun by younger crowds. Instead, Ghent and Antwerp are recommended for their vibrant bar scenes and better overall atmosphere
[5:2]
[5:5].
Budget Considerations
Traveling around New Year's can be expensive, so budget travelers should plan accordingly. Hostels in cities like Prague may offer affordable accommodation, but prices can rise significantly during this peak season [2:2]. It’s advisable to check availability and prices on platforms like Hostelworld before finalizing travel plans
[2:7].
Unique Experiences
For those seeking unique experiences, consider less conventional destinations like Tallinn, which offers a charming holiday atmosphere [1:2], or Oradea in Romania for a more off-the-beaten-path experience
[1:3]. These locations provide a different perspective on European New Year's celebrations, often with fewer tourists and more local flavor.
I just found out that I will be free over new years and wanted to book a trip for a couple of days. I don't really know where to go though. I was thinking of going to Tromsø, but it is a bit expensive and I don't want to have to buy hardcore winter wardrobe lol.
anyone have a recommendation for a town in europe where one could spend new years, preferably with lots of solo travellers/ hostels and lots of stuff around to explore the rest of the days? doesn't have to be a big city + I would love to explore the balcans more.
We really enjoyed Tallin-it's beautiful over Christmas and New Year...
Please search Oradea, Romania on google. Maybe you like it and u can spend some days in this beautiful city. :)
Vienna
i live in vienna hahah
Well lucky you
As to be expected, there will be lots of different options and not sure how that helps with a decision! Plus travel queries should include basic info like where flying from?
London is wonderful at Christmas Also Barcelona or Madrid
Hi all,
I’m planning a trip from 15 Dec – 3 Jan (budget ~€30/day). Last year I spent the holidays solo in New Zealand, and it was incredible — way better than being at home. I’d like to do the same in Europe this year.
So far I’ve researched Prague, Kraków, and Lisbon — they come up often, but I’m worried about arriving between 24–26 Dec and finding everything dead.
About me: – German, mid-20s – Love a mix of nature and nightlife – Enjoy beaches but also snowy winter vibes – Looking for social hostels and great NYE parties
My questions: – Which cities feel most alive for solo travelers during that time? – Any hostels you recommend that are fun and social even in winter? – Best spots for a crazy New Year’s party?
Any experiences or suggestions welcome!
edit: i know the budget is tight but it's just an estimate of what I'd be willing to spend. there are hostels for around 15 euros per night, depending on the country. so staying in a range of 30 euros and slightly upwards is totally feasible.
Your budget is going to be hugely stretched over one of the most popular travel periods in the yeear, so your best bet is to just look on Hostelworld and see if you can even get anything for that amount of money before you start planning properly.
There will be very little to do in most cities over 24-27th, but a city like Prague will have people milling around.
I did check hostelworld already and as I've mentioned before, it is possible to get accommodation around 15 euros per night. the budget is still tight but also it's just an estimated range. I'd just rather spend as little as possible.
I wish you good luck and success, but only €30/day? In Europe?? During the peak season Christmas/New Year??? I'm afraid that just from daily consumption for food and drink, local transport and whatever else you have in mind, you will need at least €50 per day during this time. Hotels and hostels are a factor of 3 at normal prices - I don't think you can get anything for less than €60 per night. Still, good luck!
Yeah that’s true Europe around Christmas isn’t cheap even budget spots add up fast once you include food and transport
I think it's doable. you can totally find hostels around 15 euros per day, that leaves 15 euros for food and transport. it's still tight and I probably won't stick to the limit, but this is the price range I'm looking at
As I said, good luck with that! When you get back, give us some feedback on how it went, oksy?!
€15 will get you half a meal where I live (Amsterdam)
You might find cheap places in Krakow, but Poland is still pretty strictly catholic during major festivals, so everything (even grocery stores) will be closed on 24-25th. You can go to the church in the evening on 24th or early morning on 25th though and have a walk around the city, enjoy decorations in main square. 28th is Sunday, so supermarkets will be closed again. You can get cheap hot meal in bar mleczny on 29-31st though. Are you planning to visit one or two museums during your trip? Not sure about NYE party for free though.
yes, I'd love to see some museums, a couple of historic places and nature as well.
Hungary (my home and I dislike it) is pretty good in winter. Good fireworks, tolerable weather and cheap.
I don't know about 30 euros a day but in Romania some things stay open during the holidays. For example, in Brasov there will be some open restaurants, shops and the Christmas market and you can combine visiting the town with hiking in the mountains. That's what I usually do. It's definitely not dead at all. I made the mistake of spending Christmas in western Europe a few times and I'd say here in Romania it's less dead, especially in these tourist-y towns

London
€30 a day budget in London? Good luck with that. That's 3 pints in London alone
Hi! I was thinking of treating my family to a hotel stay in metro manila (open to tagaytay, batangas and areas near metro manila) that has a great view of fireworks. Breakfast is important to have a great spread to start the new year right. Would love suggestions and even tips on when I should book for a lower price.
Thank You!
Great spread ng breakfast = Grand Hyatt.
I believe there's usually a big celebration in BGC as well.
Oh I forgot about grand hyatt in my search!! Thank you

Hello, my wife (30f) and I (31m) are visiting Belgium for four days-arriving the 30th from Paris. During those four days we would love to jump from Bruges and Brussels but feel like since short on time have to choose one. On New Year’s Eve which would you recommend for a fun night out with some light partying at bars past midnight. Nothing club-ish but can use a bit of nightlife.
Bruges is not fun on NYE because it's mostly 16yo's being loud in the streets and bars. I haven't done NYE in Brussels yet, but certain areas might be dangerous... Ghent is a better option. Lots of bars, lots of people, better crowd.
From what I can see on the telly every year, you want to stay far away from Brussels on 31 December
Brussels is fun for NYE, maybe you're just a lame person
I'm from Brussels. People here will say it's dangerous but it's not. It's a vibrant city except on NYE. The Christmas market closes before midnight and many bars are closed due to higher costs on NYE (employees are paid more, DJ, bouncer). The clubs ask ridiculous entree prices for shit parties because they know there isn't anything else to do in the centre. Fireworks are at Heizel so none in the centre, but people will light off firecrackers that sounds like we're back in 1943. Last year I heard of tourists who ended up spending NYE in their hotel rooms out of lack of anything to do. We don't party in the streets as they do in other cities or countries, the city and the police won't allow big "unorganized" public gatherings
Idk about this but do you think the fact that we have the biggest NYE festival in Brussels could result in bar and everything closing sooner as a lot of party goers goes to the festival ?
The NYE festival at Heysel is mainly people from outside of Brussels and even Belgium. It's very expensive. But it's truly crazy fun. The French that go there mainly are very nice. They have different electronic genres even some psytrance and hardcore.
No, the bars stay closed because there's no profit with all the extra costs. And if they up the prices just for NYE, everyone will call them money hungry wolves. Source: I work myself in horeca in the centre
People tend to do more house parties since covid also. A lot of people don't want to go to that shit NYE festival, myself included
Yeah everything on new years eve is crowded and overpriced. For years now we go either for house parties or renting a bar with a large group of friends (though last time they cancelled because they couldn't find people to work).
Lol! A group of friends of mine also rented a bar for a private party and I went last year and it was the first time I actually enjoyed NYE! Will do it again this year
I was in Brussels 2 years ago and there were still fireworks near the park/royal palace so not sure when they changed it to Heizel and if it's permanent?
Honestly neither 😭 go to ghent or antwerp for nye.
Choose one and go to Ghent.
(This comes from a Walloon.)
I have some time off work over Christmas and New Year and have always liked the idea of celebrating a New Years abroad so figured this was the year. Looking to book from 27th December til the 2nd January. I'll be travelling solo and will stay in a hostel as I like to meet people and socialise.
I'm a 33 year old male, criteria is simply somewhere that doesn't completely shut down around this time, has good nightlife and knows how to throw a NYE party. Not all that bothered about weather, ideally I'd prefer somewhere that isn't arctic but being English I'm more than used to the cold over winter.
In the last year I've visited Barcelona, Lisbon, Budapest and Madrid but I'd happily return to any. From looking through this sub and elsewhere I've compiled a list of options:
Reykjavik - incredible fireworks displays, proper NYE celebrations
Edinburgh - Hogmonay
Vienna - beautiful city that I've always wanted to visit but not sure if it will be as 'lively'
Prague - good nightlife but lack of public NYE celebrations?
Berlin - fits the bill but seen it described as a warzone on NYE multiple times
So where should I go? Any other recommendations are more than welcome. Thanks :-)
I went to Vienna over new year a few years back. Spent midnight at an event at one of the Christmas markets, we even had a bit of snow. Lots of drink stalls and food stalls though they could have done with more loos!
Paris during winter holidays is really nice, and they have have a great fireworks for NYE.
Vienna is quite lively for NYE!
Glasgow was wild.
I've only been to Edinburgh for Hogmanay. It is a blast! There are plenty of events from the 30th - 1st and the buzz is great. Of course, as you know, the weather can definitely be arctic. The year I went, the fireworks were cancelled due to high winds.
My deck in the hills of west Austin. My neighbors are insane.
Honestly, not a bad spot. Excellent weather that time of year.
East side in austin. Fireworks for about 48hrs 😂

Sydney
Gold Coast–Tweed Heads, because you can actually do it twice.
So basically in Australia most of our states have daylight savings during the summer. One state that does is NSW and one state that doesn’t in Queensland (but in winter they have the same time zone). They border each other.
You may have heard of the Gold Coast in Queensland as it’s a touristy spot. But just south of that is its smaller twin city called Tweed Heads in NSW.
You can celebrate New Year’s Eve in Tweed Heads then you have an hour to go north of the border to the Gold Coast and celebrate it again. They do fireworks in both cities.
Also they have nice beaches and it’s summer in January here.
Hello,
I am thinking of spending New Year’s Eve abroad. Does anyone have any experience spending NYE in a different country as a solo female traveler? What countries would you recommend and what type of activities would be available during that time of the year? I am from the EU so I’d prefer recs for other EU countries, if possible.
I am more into slow travel, museums and unique activities, not much into winter sports, but I'd love to hear any stories you have!
I also want to mention that this would be my first time traveling abroad by myself! I have done solo trips in my country, and while those did offer some experience, I imagine going to a different country obviously comes with its own challenges. Any type of advice or opinion is welcomed and much appreciated!
I was in Madeira for New Years Eve solo and it was a great time, they hold a big street party and fireworks display in the capitol, Funchal. Very safe, the street party is for everyone including kids and grandmas and old British tourists. Basically everything stayed open and the best part was the balmy weather!
I have also spent NYE in Seville and Munich and definitely don't recommend either of those. Especially Germany where everything is closed. I was in Prague a while back and it was fun, everyone was out on the streets partying, but quite rowdy, so depending on the vibe you want it could be really fun or too much.
Do you mind sharing why Seville wasn't a good destination for NYE?
Yeah no problem - mostly people seemed to be having private/family parties at home, so since I didn't know anyone there it was a bit lonely. There wasn't much public stuff going on that I could find. But overall not a terrible experience, just a bit underwhelming
Bucket list for me is new years eve in Edinburgh to attend the Hogmanay Festival. Maybe this year!
I did it last year and it was rained out. The year before I did Bruges, Brussels and would do that again 1000x. It’s the perfect place to be the week between Christmas and New Years!
Was also my bucket list and went in 2018/19. Was considering going again last year which in hindsight was good I didn’t because they cancelled.
I did the torchlit procession. Then on the Eve had tickets for the ceilidh and afterward tickets for the garden for the concert and fireworks. Tried to meet up with a group of tourists from couch surfing but ended up just going alone instead. Felt totally safe. Chatted with a guy that was there with his dad and folks held hands for Auld Lang Sein. Even chatted with a couple of sisters in there 50s on my way too and then back to my hostel. And randomly got adopted into a group of Latinos after the show going to a club. Generally everyone was in good spirits if a bit drunk. Had no rain and was cold so just had to layer up but I’m used to colder temps around those dates.
I wasn’t in the street party part of it, so not sure if the ambience was different. In the gardens there was plenty of space, not crowded at all.
Did Hogmanay. Cannot recommend. Freezing, expensive and badly organised when I went. A female colleague of mine also went last NYE and regretted it as well.
Didn’t experience any racism and we’re both POCs. So if you’re looking for a relatively safe place to let your hair down, then Edinburgh’s a good shout.
But it’s cold and messy. Be warned.
Yes, I'd expect it to be cold and wet in January. I lived in the UK.
Just want to chime in: don’t come celebrate nye in the Netherlands. The dutch celebrate at home with friends and family and then go out after 01:00 (or have a house party). I always see a lot of tourists in my city (utrecht) expecting something fun but everything is closed on the 31st after 17:00 and on the 1st everyone is hiding in their house. 😂
i did nye in barcelona this year! went alone but came out of it with several new friends. saw the fireworks at plaça espanya with a new friend from my hostel, met another friend out and stayed out until 5am, then went to la sagrada familia on new year’s day! best experience ever. 🥰
That sounds like so much fun, I'm glad you had a good time!! I'll put Barcelona on my list, thank you ❤️
i have found that flights on christmas day are generally less expensive overall when traveling during the holidays. i guess there could be a concern about what’s available on the other end of the flight (trains/taxis from the airport) but i think in any major capital you’d be covered.
Hey everyone!
I'm planning to travel for New Year's Eve and I'm looking for great spots within Europe to celebrate. It could be iconic cities, hidden gems, or unique experiences (I’m open to cold or warm destinations). Ideally something memorable: fireworks, atmosphere, nature, party, or just cozy and different.
I’d love to hear your personal favorites or tips!
Thanks in advance
Abisko
I'm intrigued. What's so special about Abisko on new years eve? Tack på förhand!
Norrsken på nyår låter ok för mig
Edinburgh is known for it's New years celebrations (or Hogmanay). You need to book your accommodation well in advance though.

I did Lagos in the Algarve for last new year. Was actually a really good vibe. Seeing it in with Palm trees as the fireworks went off was kinda cool
If you want something different and cozy, try Hallstatt in Austria. It's like something out of a postcard, especially in winter.
A few years ago, I spent an epic New Year's Eve in Prague. We first did dinner at one of the river boats with fireworks at Charles's Bridge, and then we went clubbing.
