Edinburgh, Scotland
Edinburgh is renowned for its Hogmanay celebrations, which are a major draw for those looking to experience a lively New Year's Eve. The city offers a range of events from December 30th to January 1st, including street parties and concerts. However, the weather can be quite cold, and there have been instances where fireworks were canceled due to high winds [3:1].
Vienna, Austria
Vienna is another excellent choice for New Year's Eve, known for its vibrant atmosphere. Visitors can enjoy events at Christmas markets and partake in the city's festive spirit. The combination of snow, drinks, and food stalls creates a charming winter experience [3:2],
[3:4].
Paris, France
Paris offers a magical setting during the winter holidays, with impressive fireworks displays for New Year's Eve. The city's iconic landmarks provide a stunning backdrop for the celebrations, making it a memorable destination for ringing in the new year [3:3].
Rio de Janeiro, Brazil
Rio is famous for its beach parties, particularly on Copacabana Beach, which attracts massive crowds for New Year's Eve. It's considered one of the best places globally to celebrate, offering a mix of vibrant nightlife, cultural experiences, and beautiful scenery. Booking accommodations well in advance is recommended due to the city's popularity during this time [4:2],
[5:8].
Sydney, Australia
Sydney is world-famous for its spectacular New Year's Eve fireworks over the Sydney Harbour Bridge and Opera House. The city's warm summer weather makes it an attractive option for those looking to escape the cold and enjoy outdoor festivities [4:4].
Unique Experiences
For a unique New Year's Eve experience, consider the Gold Coast–Tweed Heads area in Australia, where you can celebrate twice due to the time zone difference between Queensland and New South Wales. This allows revelers to enjoy two countdowns within an hour's drive [4:3].
Is it fun for a casual player? I'm in the mood for an MMO and I've been thinking of New World or Guild Wars 2.
I've been off and on for GW2 for years. I'm on it now and it's just super fun to me. Story is meh, but the world and the combat is just endless fun.
I quite enjoy the story. I've been playing it on and off since release and I'm only just arriving at the third expansion's story missions.
With the living world, there is a lot of story content to play through. The big advantage of this kind of MMO is that you can put the game down for a year or two (which I've done repeatedly) and when you come back you're not behind and you have no pressure to keep playing or cancel a subscription to get your money's worth.
I'd say it's especially fun for a casual player!
Its fun for a casual player. Just make sure if you're playing on console to join a crossplay server because just about all console only servers are dead.
They make a JP/KR/CN server yet? If not still a no go for a huge audience.
I know this game has its issues, but in a sense I'm glad it's still trucking along. I have no clue how it makes money, given that it's owners are quick to shut down unprofitable projects, but I should give this a proper chance one day.
My somewhat tinfoil hat theory is AGS is using New World as a play test/design space for their Lord of the rings MMO.
They cancelled that recently due to a business dispute with another company.
I played for the first couple weeks after launch and realized PvP would be its downfall. Any game that designs and enforces PvP as a core game mechanic inevitably snowballs servers into a single guild since no one wants to lose.
They’ve never been able to figure out a way to incentivize joining the weaker factions so the strong guilds all power-struggle in the dominant faction and then join the biggest guild OR switch servers and start anew.
Without creating a reason to stick around on a server or commit to growing a “losing” faction it inevitably snowballs into something that makes the entire 3-faction system worthless.
At least with the new expansion there’s a tacit renewal of the PvE aspect of the game which has been pretty neglected for the past few seasons after Aeternum. The PvP portion is basically “solved”.

Oh, are you a Guild Wars fan? I would not have guessed, lol.
Amazing! Ethiopia looks like a place I'd love to go one day! Great job capturing the vibes
When you decide to show up hit me up I will show you aroun, the local way.
I have some time off work over Christmas and New Year and have always liked the idea of celebrating a New Years abroad so figured this was the year. Looking to book from 27th December til the 2nd January. I'll be travelling solo and will stay in a hostel as I like to meet people and socialise.
I'm a 33 year old male, criteria is simply somewhere that doesn't completely shut down around this time, has good nightlife and knows how to throw a NYE party. Not all that bothered about weather, ideally I'd prefer somewhere that isn't arctic but being English I'm more than used to the cold over winter.
In the last year I've visited Barcelona, Lisbon, Budapest and Madrid but I'd happily return to any. From looking through this sub and elsewhere I've compiled a list of options:
Reykjavik - incredible fireworks displays, proper NYE celebrations
Edinburgh - Hogmonay
Vienna - beautiful city that I've always wanted to visit but not sure if it will be as 'lively'
Prague - good nightlife but lack of public NYE celebrations?
Berlin - fits the bill but seen it described as a warzone on NYE multiple times
So where should I go? Any other recommendations are more than welcome. Thanks :-)
Vienna is quite lively for NYE!
Paris during winter holidays is really nice, and they have have a great fireworks for NYE.
I went to Vienna over new year a few years back. Spent midnight at an event at one of the Christmas markets, we even had a bit of snow. Lots of drink stalls and food stalls though they could have done with more loos!
Glasgow was wild.
I've only been to Edinburgh for Hogmanay. It is a blast! There are plenty of events from the 30th - 1st and the buzz is great. Of course, as you know, the weather can definitely be arctic. The year I went, the fireworks were cancelled due to high winds.

Gold Coast–Tweed Heads, because you can actually do it twice.
So basically in Australia most of our states have daylight savings during the summer. One state that does is NSW and one state that doesn’t in Queensland (but in winter they have the same time zone). They border each other.
You may have heard of the Gold Coast in Queensland as it’s a touristy spot. But just south of that is its smaller twin city called Tweed Heads in NSW.
You can celebrate New Year’s Eve in Tweed Heads then you have an hour to go north of the border to the Gold Coast and celebrate it again. They do fireworks in both cities.
Also they have nice beaches and it’s summer in January here.
Sydney
My deck in the hills of west Austin. My neighbors are insane.
Honestly, not a bad spot. Excellent weather that time of year.
East side in austin. Fireworks for about 48hrs 😂
The comfort of my own home, watching it on TV.
Hi everyone! I’m a 25F from NYC and I’m planning to spend the week of New Year’s Eve in Rio with a small group of friends. I’ve heard it’s one of the best places in the world to celebrate.
I’m looking for any and all recommendations for:
Also, if there are any safety tips or things you wish you knew before going, I’m all ears.
Thanks in advance!! 💛✨
Cave um buraco bem grande na praia, entre nele, fique preso e vire notícia no noticiário local. É um hábito comum dos turistas que visitam o Rio
If you have nothing better to do, do some handstands on the beach, but don't dig 8ft holes in the sand maybe
You might enjoy the view of "Dona Marta Lookout". The view is almost the same as the Corcovado's. And it's totally free
The beaches are nice and totally free as well. But I think you already know it
You might enjoy the "Pedra do Sal", or Lapa. They're cool places, full of small bars, clubs, music and people willing to socialize
If you like to meet some popular places (really popular places), you can go to "Feira de São Cristóvão". You'll meet the roots of the Brazilian people, specially those who come from the northeast reagion
You might also enjoy the "Parque Lage", the Botanical Garden, etv
Pedra do sal é a maior furada que tem kkkkk só vale pela caipirinha barata
Pior que gringo gosta dessa porra
não vem não que ja tem gente pra caralho aqui
Just book your accommodations WAY in advance.
And I would only recommend a tour if you are into historical places and plan to go to the city center and docks area. Then it would be worthy going with a guide who speaks English and can explain to you the historical significance of the places and sights.
What kind of club are you searching for? It really depends on what kind of party you want
I live in Murrieta but I want to actually do something this year intead of staying home and watching the ball drop in New York on my TV. Anyone have suggestions? I know its a small town but still. I thought of going to San Diego but I don't want to drive so far. Anything above 200 might be too much but I'm pretty bored today
You're better off staying home.
Nothing good happens on NYE with all the drinking and driving.
But you do you.
Grape drop at city hall. I rmrbeer going when thy had the band safety orange playing. Good food good music cool grape thing that drop. Grab a hot coffee before hand. Good times
Cj’s at the Lake Elsinore Casino is having a bash.
I have a 3 year old at home and no babysitter, wife and I are just gonna lounge around and play a few games, she will still get some work done on her laptop and I am studying to be a pilot so I got a lot of reading to do.

Grape drop in front of old Town
I’m pretty new to nyc I still don’t have any friends but I wanna go out onto day for the parties where should I go ?
Times Square can be miserable is you aren't prepared and filled with bridge and tunnel. But you should do at least once in your life as a NYer
Honestly NYE is the absolute worst night to go out. If you really need to go somewhere, maybe your local low key pub or dive bar. I guarantee you’ll have more fun sitting at home watching TV.
I’ve never been downtown for NYE and I really just don’t want to spend NYE alone. I want to go out to bars and drink and enjoy my young adulthood as I haven’t until recently. My friends are either busy or just don’t want to go.
I wanna go and be included in the commotion and see the fireworks. How do I do this without feeling like a complete weirdo for being on my own? What do I even do?
They’re doing fireworks along the riverwalk again!
I’m sure it’d be entertaining to stroll, people watch, grab an overpriced drink or two and enjoy the fireworks. No one will think you’re weird.
Have fun with whatever you decide to do and happy new year.
Also find somewhere to sit and observe with your drink (non alcoholic or cover it up) as it'll feel way less awkward not having to push through people and walk aimlessly through a crowd because you don't have anywhere specific to be. I learned this as someone who does a lot of stuff on their own lol. You'll feel so much more anxious trying to seem like you're going somewhere when in reality you're just there to relax, observe, etc. Knowing you're not on a timer or countdown (no pun intended w/ it being new-years) you'll feel chill
There are dive bars in River North you can go to after watching the fireworks on the river. Try Snickers, Mother Hubbard’s or Mom’s Place. And don’t worry about feeling like a weirdo bc you’re solo - you have to live your life. So many people do things solo.
Don’t forget the Billy Goat!
The answer is Boss Bar 🤣
Boss Bar used to be a legit hole in the wall before its current upgrades.
You can do anything you want alone. Just take the leap.
leap and the net will appear!
Just don’t go near the lake alone….
Sorry wait like, for falling in? Or does some shady shit happen on NYE that I’m not aware of
There’s been a lot of shady deaths of men alone and somehow ending up in the lake. Just be careful.
You'd be surprised how many people are open to making friends with strangers. If it can happen on any normal night out, it can definitely happen on NYE.
Unless that's not what you want lol, then in that case, you can do anything alone.
FYI, some bars might have tickets for entry for NYE, so just do your research.
You can see some of the festivities on the Times Square Cam. Then see all the mess that's left over afterwards.
Yes, it’s probably the worst place to be on the planet other than a hospital room or Ohio.
Haha 🤣 why the hate on Ohio!!!! Ohio has some very very nice hospital rooms!!!! Just saying!! ✌️
Native New Yorker here and we all have various opinions on this celebration but this is mine.
It is fun for some but the event has changed over the last 50 years. The early '80s was the last time I would have considered it. So, here are some tidbits to think about:
If you love the cold, or wet-cold, don't mind being in a mosh pit with loud, (potentially) drunken folks shouting in your ear, think it is just fine that you are penned into steel-gated/guarded areas from which you cannot temporarily leave, don't mind wearing a diaper (watch out for the UTI's!) because you can't leave to "go" (Which restaurant or lobby hotel restroom had you planned to crash? Good luck with that.), and are ready to travel by rail (driving on NYD is really nuts in NYC) with similar partiers away from the scene? Go for it.
If you are from out of town, and do want the experience without the crowd issues, you can book a room (for next year) overlooking the festivities at one of the hotels on TS and enjoy the lights and people show. And, you will learn about all the security arrangements (post 9/11) that accompany the celebration.
What an answer! Thank you for the response.
You are most welcome! Happy New Year too....
very crowded I'd imagine
Just pee where you’re standing. That’s what it’s like. Because you can’t move
Recently moved to the city and don’t have many friends yet. Looking for a good New Year’s Eve suggestion for 31M single guy.
Not sure where you moved from but it's a real treat to be able to ring in the new year by dancing out in the sun with a few thousand new friends.
There's quite a few Meetups in SF hosting events for NYE. I believe SF Hangouts is doing a bar crawl. https://meetu.ps/e/NL71D/MhLy2/i
What exactly makes a NYE event worthwhile to you, as a single guy?
Just a fun night with a few beers and people to meet. Don’t even need to be out past midnight. An event where people expect to meet other people would be perfect.
I feel like most bars in the mission will be hot spots. El Chato will have DJ’s & a crowd.
An event where people expect to meet other people would be perfect.
You're not going to like San Francisco very much.
A couple of casual New Year's Eve parties that I know of:
Most bars will be open, so you could pick a neighborhood and do a bar crawl. If you don't drink alcohol, order soft drinks and mocktails.
For New Year's Day, you could tour the fancy hotels downtown: The Palace (huge Christmas tree), The Fairmont (two-story gingerbread house in the lobby), the InterContinental Mark Hopkins. Also check out Union Square. It'll be the last day of their extravagant displays of Christmas lights and decorations.
This is awesome thanks for the recs. Market street seems like it might be the move
Skip New Year’s Eve and go to the best party of the year on New Year’s Day filled with happy beautiful people who want to connect, Breakfast of Champions
Do you know how early people arrive to this? I saw that it starts at 4am. I have work on NY day but was thinking of checking it out early morning before heading to work.
At 4am it’s a very small crowd, at 11am another level full, by 1pm about 3000 people by 6pm 6000 people
Watch the sunset at ocean beach, others will be there to do the same, meet people and hang out or just go home and sleep
