ORIGINAL POST

I heard that Korean dance is very difficult and beginners often dance ugly. In fact, I am a little worried that it will affect my enthusiasm because I almost failed aerobics class. (But I don’t expect to dance for others, I just think I should cultivate some dancing hobbies. I think Korean dance is very beautiful.

If you’re talking about traditional Korean dance, it’ll be very location-dependent and whether you have a big Korean community in your city. If you can’t find any, anything ballet/contemporary/lyrical classes will at least train your body and develop your sense of rhythm. If you’re talking about K-pop, just about any dance studio in an Asian-heavy suburb will have kpop classes.

I live mainly in China (and also plan to work in Korea, the UK or Japan), but since the Korean ethnic group is actually distributed in Northeast China and North and South Korea, there seem to be many schools of this dance style, and I don't know which one is good for beginners (and will not hinder advanced practice). I heard that the teaching of many training classes is not very reliable.

Are you able to speak Chinese? The easiest most reliable way would probably be to browse Chinese forum recommendations by typing in the specific cities known for having a big population of ethnic Koreans. Otherwise as general advice (not Korean dance specific), I would browse websites and see which studios explicitly have a curriculum. If you go in person, it’s a good sign if they start with basic movements and talk about the lines of your body, intention behind each move etc. rather than jump into choreography.

The more classes on the timetable, likely the more popular and reputable. See if they upload any videos on their students or host cultural performance events. If they do, they’re likely more confident in their teaching ability.

Foreigner friendly beginner dance studios in Seoul?

Posted by Fubby2 · in r/korea · 3 years ago

Hello,

I'm currently on student exchange in Seoul and I figure that Korea seems like a great place to get started in learning to dance. I know about 1million obviously but it's pretty far away from me and so i was wondering if anyone else knows any dance studios that have beginner classes which foreigners can attend? I've looked online but most of the schools only have information in Korean and i think a lot of them are just for children.

If anyone has any advice please let me know!

1Million actually has a new studio in Daejeon now if that’s closer to you than the Seoul one! They’re the most beginner & foreigner friendly out of all the studios in Korea I went to; good luck on your search!

The company is called SA's latin dance company. I went to the first class last Thursday and I really enjoyed it :)

Just Jerk and 1MILLION don’t regularly offer K-pop dance classes. While 1MILLION recently started offering K-pop dance classes, they seem to only hold them once a week.

If you're visiting Hongdae, I recommend Rawgraphy Hongdae, and if you're heading to Gangnam, check out YN Company.

Taking a dance class as a foreigner+beginner

Posted by PureRelative8648 · in r/koreatravel · 5 months ago

Hey everyone! I’ll be visiting Seoul from May 2 to May 6 and I’d love to take a dance class while I’m there. I’m not a complete beginner but definitely not a pro either — just someone who loves to dance!

Do you know any good studios that welcome foreigners and offer drop-in classes or short-term options? Bonus if the class is taught in English or easy to follow without speaking Korean. I checked out 1Million Studio, but most of the classes seem to be fully booked already.

Any tips on how to book a spot (website, app, Instagram, etc.) would be super appreciated. Thanks in advance!

Salsa classes in Seoul?

Posted by tunava · in r/seoul · 5 months ago

Hi everyone!

I will be moving to Seoul for a year starting in the summer, and I am interested in taking salsa classes. From what I’ve read there seems to be a very big salsa dancing scene, but I’m a little unclear on which studios in Seoul offer classes, and if so, whether they tend to be on 1 or on 2 (I have only danced on 1 but am interested in either continuing and/or learning on 2).

I’ve found Jhonatan Dance Company, which does salsa on 1. Wondering if anyone has any other recs? I’ll likely be in Gangnam but am willing to make the commute if needed.

Thank you so much!

The (salsa) dance scene in Korea is mostly through "clubs" (동호회). Clubs are slightly different than dance studios:

  • Probably less expensive (the teachers usually just teach on the side; not a full-time job)
  • More social
  • Larger class sizes
  • Probably younger age group: 20-40s vs 50+. (In fact, clubs often have maximum age restrictions.)
  • Much later hours. I think earliest classes start at 7pm or so, and dancing can go on until past 2 or 3am. (Weekend classes might start earlier.)
  • Note: I've taken part in many dance clubs, but only one dance "academy." So I think this is an accurate comparison, but my idea of dance studios in Korea may not be totally accurate.

I think most if not all of these clubs switched to "on 2" several years ago.

The Salsa clubs in Seoul are concentrated in two main areas: Gangnam + Hongdae.

Here is the place I learned salsa several years ago (Hongdae): https://cafe.daum.net/latinboston

My friend is currently active in the Gangnam salsa scene. He thinks it's better in Gangnam. He likes their teaching style better.

I just looked up Jhonatan Dance Company and here are a few more differences:

  • Students at Jhonatan seem to be mostly foreigners. Students at clubs will be mostly native Koreans.
  • Jhonatan might teach in English, or at least be able to speak English? Classes at clubs will be in Korean. (Although you should be able to get by even if you know little or no Korean.)

Definitely a pretty niche thing for Mobile. Not saying there isn’t anything like that here, but the people who own Starlite Ballroom may be able to give you some advice on if there are any other dance places in the area for something like that.

I would love to learn K-Pop dancing but am too scared to start. How can I begin?

Posted by [deleted] · in r/kpophelp · 3 years ago

It has always been a “dream” of mine to dance like idols, maybe not on stage but just as a hobby. It seems so cool… but I have a lot of self-esteem and confidence issues and I do not have my own room (constantly in view of my parents since we have a tiny home). It’s also hard to look into the mirror because of this inner self-hatred kinda…?

Yesterday I went to KCON LA and saw so many people dancing at the MNET Booth where they set up a stage. They seemed to have so much fun regardless of whether they were a beginner or experienced.

Maybe someone has been in my situation before? I have this feeling that I’d gain a lot of confidence if I start dancing and doing what I want. But idk it just feels extremely difficult to start it off…

If you have a small space and would be self-conscious doing it in front of/ around your parents, are there times you would be alone or places you could go (ex. a friend's house) where you could learn and practice without that worry?

I'm a dancer and am fairly proficient (intermediate to advanced, class-wise) in a number of styles, and I started this way about 3-4 years ago and I will confirm 100% your confidence will shoot through the roof as you learn.

If you'd give some examples of groups or choreos you like I would gladly give you some more specific pointers and maybe some resources for learning; at this point, all I can say is you shouldn't think about "learning kpop dance," your main focus should be figuring out what styles you vibe with and learning those properly (which is why I ask your music/choreo taste). While it may seem like that would be more difficult or time consuming, the first two years or so I was dancing I failed to do precisely that and it made me plateau because there was just basic stuff I couldn't do — once I had proper resources though the progress was immediate and faster than it had been before.

Unfortunately I don’t have anywhere rn. My friends all can’t have visitors and one of my parents retired and is home almost 24/7. I am going to college soon so hopefully I can find a spot that I can reserve, but I’m not sure where that would be as I haven’t been there yet.

I’m more interested in boy group choreos and hip-hop despite being a GG stan :,) I very much despise the idea of dancing to girly-sexy choreo stuff since I’m not very feminine. But since I’m a beginner, they’re all much too hard for me to start off with. One of my goals is to learn ATEEZ - Guerrilla chorus and that’s so ambitious, but I know it’ll take a longgggg while til I’m at a level where I can dance it properly/cleanly/strongly(?) it’s just one of my goals for the future! if i start learning…

There was one dance I tried to learned which is Twice - FANCY. It was fun and easy but I only did it a couple years ago because I had to for a club challenge… and that’s it.

3 upvotes on reddit
SeraphOfTwilight · 3 years ago

You could do to pick from groups like Pixy, Everglow, Dreamcatcher, so on. Less difficult than say Ateez and NCT, but use the same styles more often than not and do so more comparably than say an Itzy choreo or something might.

My first song was Wonderland actually, so you aren't looking at something to crazy. My primary concerns would be that you'll really need your core and leg strength, and ideally you'll want to breathe through your diaphragm not your throat or chest.

What you're gonna want to look for are resources for popping and hip hop, potentially krumping and/or locking, and maybe house if you find footwork difficult. I personally use and highly reccomend an app called Steezy Studios for online courses and tutorials, but it is limited in which devices or software it works with and it's a subscription (a cheap one, but one nonetheless). There are plenty of individual pros and dance crews/studios who have their own channels on Youtube, but I don't know any for hip hop and popping off the top of my head.

Also, look for the choreographer demos for songs; often you can find them on Youtube by searching using key terms like that — "demo," "original choreographer," etcetera. Ateez's are done by BB Trippin & Anze Skrube, the former did Everglow's First, and a ton of choreos are made by Freemind.

You seem like you have deep confidence issues from your post. I’m not sure if this advice will help with this in mind but, maybe just bite the bullet and accept dancing in a space where your parents can see you? Or rent a studio/ gym space?

If you don’t want to do this, perhaps start with exercising first. You don’t have to become a gym junkee, but doing some ab, arm and leg workouts may help. In dance it’s important to have a strong core to help with things like balance or power, so having abs helps. Stretching is also a good idea to improve flexibility, hence improving your dance. You could set goals for yourself to learn your middle splits and things like that. Just some YouTube videos will help.

Other than that, do you have a mirror? Or perhaps you could use your laptops/ phone camera? So you can record/ watch yourself dance. Then it’s easier to make corrections and actually see what you’re doing.

Since you’re a beginner learn an easy dance first to get a grip of it. Something BLACKPINK is good because whilst their dances are fast the moves are simple and give a good feel for kpop choreo. Learn the whole song through (using explained tutorials since you’re a beginner) and repeat it 20 times at once. Keep doing this to not only improve stamina but ingrain the choreography into your mind.

After maybe learning one or two BLACKPINK choreos, try learning basic moves. Moves like how to arm wave, some simple footwork, body rolls, how to pop. Isolations and foot glides as well. Just google or YouTube these. Repeat these over and over again, and keep drilling them over some music for muscle memory.

Then, since you’re still a beginner you could use explained tutorials. If you want to upgrade, you could use a tutorial where there isn’t an explanation, just someone doing the dance. And if you want to upgrade further, copy from a dance cover or dance practice video. Some good channels for not just covers but tutorials are Ellen & Brian, and imlisarhee. Imlisarhee is amazing, but she doesn’t capture the details of the choreo as perfectly as Ellen & Brian. Ellen & Brian are also good if you want an explained tutorial, however they usually only do the chorus, unlike Lisa who does the entire song. But both are good and can be used hand in hand along with some other channels.

I think doing choreo you enjoy, or like the song to, is beneficial at this point. It’s good motivation. So at this point, I’d just choose any choreo I want to learn. Yes you might look horrible, but who cares? You’re doing it for fun, and if you want to improve, doing tough choreo is helpful.

Another tip: People don’t mention this enough but watch a lot of dance content! Watching kpop dance rankings, kpop dance reactors and so on, as well as utilising reddit will be helpful. It’s helpful to have your favourite idol dancers or dancers in general who you look up too. Someone like Momo, Seulgi, Ten, Jhope, Bada Lee. This will help you differentiate good and bad dancers as well as guide you in learning dance vocabulary. You may start to indenting problems in your own dancing, and because of this content and resources, you’ll be able to improve.

How I do it is that I find my fav Kpop song and watch the dance practice mirrored many times until the moves are in memory, then I stretch first, then slow the video down to go over the moves (only if it’s a fast dance) and once I get it, I just speed it up to Normal speed. It’s nothing to be scared off and I’ve been doing this for years and I’ve lost weight from it😅

start by dancing just in your room or another room where you can have a little privacy. don’t look in the mirror or care about if you’re executing the steps well. just move!! by doing that you’ll get comfortable with how your body moves and feels when dancing. try that for a day or two and see how you feel. then just keep moving your goals so they get more difficult as you go. start with something as small as “i’m going to learn five seconds of a dance today!” you’ll see that it will get easier and easier to move and you can dance just like everyone else at that booth!

i started in the same place as you. it’s hard to not compare yourself to other dancers, but remember that every single dancer starts somewhere. our fave idols even had to start at the beginning! you got this :)

I'd start practicing some easy TikTok challenges like Pop by Nayeon to get used to synchronize your arms and hands with the music. If you're starting from zero, it's hard enough. Also, it's not like you're moving your entire body, so you can stop immediately whenever you see your parents are coming.

Maybe you could use the bathroom to practice to move your feet too? I follow some profiles on Instagram who teach you isolations. They usually don't require a lot space.

I think you can achieve a solid base with these exercises. Don't give up!
