What Redditors are Saying

Best Pokémon Card Sets to Collect

TL;DR Hidden Fates, Crown Zenith, and Darkness Ablaze are popular choices for collectors due to their valuable cards and themes.

Hidden Fates

Hidden Fates is a highly recommended set for collectors. It contains multiple cards that could be worth hundreds in the future [1:5]. Although it's not as readily available in some regions like Europe [1:8], it remains a sought-after set due to its potential value and popularity among collectors.

Crown Zenith

For fans of Pikachu and Eeveelutions, Crown Zenith is a great set to consider. It includes several Pikachu and Eeveelution cards, making it ideal for collectors with these preferences [4:1]. The set features cards like the Galarian Gallery Pikachu and a secret rare textured Pikachu [4:3].

Darkness Ablaze

Darkness Ablaze is notable for featuring the first-ever VMAX Charizard card, which makes it an attractive option for collectors looking for iconic Pokémon cards [1:2]. Pre-ordering this set can offer cost savings and ensure availability when the set is released.

Detective Pikachu and Sun & Moon Sets

Detective Pikachu is one of the easiest sets to complete due to its smaller size and high availability [1:1]. Additionally, earlier Sun and Moon sets are recommended for their cool cards and insane pull rates [1:1]. However, caution is advised when purchasing single packs online, as they may be mapped from booster boxes [1:3].

Investment and Grading Considerations

While collecting Pokémon cards can be a hobby, some collectors are interested in grading and selling cards for profit. It's important to note that opening packs with the intention of making money might not always yield returns [5:3]. Instead, focusing on collecting sets you enjoy and potentially grading valuable cards can be a more rewarding approach [5:1][5:2].

Pre order darkness ablaze it has the first ever vmax charizard card. If you pre order it can get it cheaper. Also there is a holiday 2020 set coming out in September when pre orders go live will be a good set to buy.

Detective Pikachu is by far the easiest to complete rn due to its high availability and it’s somewhat smaller set. Tho, I highly recommend completing one of the earlier Sun and Moon sets with its Insane pull rates and cool cards

what SM set would you say?

Beargamer2122Stories · 5 years ago

Well, burning shadows, maybe. Although, it’s a hard set to get ahold of. How about Sun and Moon base? If you’re going to try that, DO NOT buy single packs online. It’s most likely mapped from a whole booster box. Buy a sealed booster box or go to the store to get some (not right now, obviously).

Shining legends are real nice, been grabbing some of those packs and burning shadows,

HF are still relatively cheap considering the shortage but before doing that I recommend looking in all your local shops you might be lucky.

Darkness ablaze seems like it could be a great set fingers crossed.

Go to TCGplayer.com

Go to the Pokemon American price lists. Look at them one by one - all the Scarlet Violet sets - and sort the list by most expensive (market value).

That will give you an idea of the top chase cards in each set.

While you’re there, click over to sealed product in each list and see what the going price is for packs.

Some sets are so hot right now that you likely won’t find them for a reasonable price.

What sets should I be looking for right now?

Posted by SWarren3852 · in r/PokemonTCG · 7 months ago

Never really been into Pokémon cards but looking to start collecting since I used to play the video games and I enjoy watching pack opening videos. I’ve been looking around and there’s just such an overwhelming amount of sets to choose from that I don’t even know where to begin. Any suggestions are appreciated!!

First thing to know is that there is no good/best/should/must have, only what you like that you can afford to lose money on especially if pack openings are involved. With the hype atm though singles are looking to be the best option.

Start with research into figuring out what you want to collect as it's your collection, your budget and therefore your choice. These tips and resources may be of use with that:

  • Decide on a collecting goal before buying anything. It doesn't have to be full sets or opening packs as buying singles (favourite Pokemon/artist etc), PSA cards, sealed etc are all valid options especially as pulls aren't guaranteed in any product.
  • Watch smpratte, Fourth Star TCG, TCA Gaming, TheCatsMeowth, Danny Phantump, WakeRunCollapse and Hungry Kabbigon to see what's around to collect both old and new plus English and Japanese.
  • Buy what you like and it doesn't have to be what everyone else is buying plus try not to get sucked in by hype or FOMO.
  • Set a budget and stick to it as this hobby gets expensive especially if you think you might want to play as well. If you are going to play then set a playing goal, collecting goal and overall budget and remember that opening packs isn't good for players due to the unpredictability of pulls and the need for specific pulls from multiple sets plus read this.
  • Prices tend to be cheaper online so do your research on possible places to buy. Avoid Amazon though as it doesn't have a good reputation.
  • Keep a regular eye on Pokebeach for news and get used to using Bulbapedia as well. If you're after cards for a specific Pokemon then use the search bar on Bulbapedia and add tcg as part of a search to get a list of cards printed for it. Pokemon's set gallery can help as well for picture of sets starting Sword & Shield onwards.
  • Keep an eye on what is being played via Pokebeach, Limitless TCG, Omnipoke and Celio's Network as card playability will affect prices for both buying and selling including non ultra rares.

Starting a Collection. Need some advice :)

Posted by AAlly00 · in r/PokemonTCG · 9 months ago

Hello everyone,

I’ve been a big fan of the Pokémon animated series and used to collect the cards as a kid. Unfortunately those cards are gone now and I’ve grown back to loving the franchise. I’ve recently started collecting cards and don’t really have a direction to go in. Did some research and ultimately decided to start collecting my favorite Pokemon instead, that being Pikachu. I also considered eve and their evolutions.

I was wondering what’s the best set to buy that contains some of these Pokémon but still affordable as I was informed it can cost a pretty penny to collect these Pokémon. Another thing being where would be the best place to buy singles? There’s not a lot of card shops near me so any online resources would be great!

Thanks for the help :D

TCGplayer is best for singles ✅ if you want to open packs, there’s a couple eeveelutions and pikachus in crown zenith. the new english set surging sparks is pikachu themed, and the new japanese set terastal festival is eeveelution themed (and will become our next english set prismatic evolutions).

unfortunately the newest sets are a little hard to get at the moment, but crown zenith should still be affordable!

What set should I try to get?

Posted by Frenzygamesq · in r/PokemonTCG · 6 months ago

Starting to get back into collecting after 6 years and am wondering what set is the best to buy with the best price. Looking on all platforms but most interested in etbs, booster boxes, or the packs that have the big promo card in the middle. Can be Japanese or English, mostly looking to get a good chase card and get it graded to make my money back and a little on top.

if you’re looking to open packs to make money you’re barking up the wrong tree. don’t be a scalper. it’s not about the money.

1 upvotes on reddit
Frenzygamesq · OP · 6 months ago

Not trying to scalp only trying to sell cards after grading them and only if they are 10s I will be keeping most if not all that look nice as well and that are 9s. I know that the business is good and only will be selling them for average prices found and not anything above market value for 10s, if people didn’t want to buy PSA 10 cards then I would be keeping them for me, the money is a nice bonus and a return of the money that I invested in the pack.

Scalper

1 upvotes on reddit
Frenzygamesq · OP · 6 months ago

So everyone that sells expensive cards they don’t want to keep are scalpers? So every YouTuber that sells their duplicate cards that they pay money for to be graded is a scalper? Idk what yall are talking about. Every other subreddit is chill about this. If that card is worth a lot but I like it I will keep it, something scalpers don’t do.

1 upvotes on reddit
Frenzygamesq · OP · 6 months ago

And btw it’s not scalping as I actually enjoy collecting cards, it’s investing, I’m just trying to see if there are any good sets that have cool cards with a chance of pulling one that may be worth flipping.

What's the coolest set(in your opinion) to collect. Forget prices etc and focus on the actual set, including normal cards.

Posted by 111ThatGuy111 · in r/PokemonTCG · 8 months ago

I collected pokemon 25 years ago roughly, unfortunately I went to a rough British school and they were banned and we forgot about them. I think during one lunch break I scrambled all of my cards and walked off. There were definitely "shinys" in there, which I am super bummed about.

Anyways, fast forward and I've just started the twilight masquerade set as my son(2) picked TM and I've stuck with it. I'll give it to him on his 18th birthday as a gift. Only a few singles to get now.

So, regarding the title. Regardless of price, because I won't be selling, what's your favourite set. Aside from the original set.

Curious to know of some suggestions. I'm also a complete noob into this industry and have only watched a few videos and some basic research on everything.

It's whatever you want man!

You can look up the pull rates for rare cards from different sets. Some are more generous than others. You can also see entire card lists for each set to figure out which cards you want. If you're interested in value, I personally use tcgplayer.

1 upvotes on reddit
PersonalSherpa · 3 years ago

Go to sites that show set card lists and look at the rare cards. Make a list of chase cards and buy the sets those cards are in.

1 upvotes on reddit
markfoster314 · 3 years ago

With $50 you can honestly get a pretty good base set collection going. I went on tcg and picked up like half the cards in the set for like $30. Been buying lots from local collectors to sort of fill the rest out.

Those were the cards I had when I was younger so it was good nostalgia to see them all again and gave me a good place to jump off of when it comes to other sets or rarer cards.

You can also probably get like a 10 card booster box of one of the newer sets if your more into the thrill of opening packs. I bought a couple booster boxes of the newer sets and had some good pulls but also got to relive some of that fun of being a kid. Probably not the best way to go about it if you’re looking at it from more of an investment standpoint but from and enjoyment standpoint I think it’s worth it

1 upvotes on reddit
jimmydaylong · 3 years ago

Kinda of a loaded question. Depends what your budget is. Every set is gonna have a “chase card”. Sets over the last 2 years have been cool with the Vmax cards and the alternate art cards that can be quite valuable. Maybe your a millionaire and can go in hard on some popular vintage sets

5 upvotes on reddit
Raffaele520 · 3 years ago

It's actually the same question i had last month when i was wondering what box was better overall.

In the end i bought 6 evolving skies packs, where I've found absolutely nothing (1 V and 1 dialga holo), and a Exeggutor promo bundle (4 packs) where I've found a Vstar and a secret rare card.

Ok that ultimately is RNG and is a extremely small sample size, though I'm not confident anymore choosing packs standalone when shopping online

Pokémon is gambling. Gambling is designed for the house to win. If you gamble with the intent to hit it big you’re an idiot. It’s just meant to be a fun hobby.

I personally enjoy the act of opening product. That’s why I do it. If you want to just own specific cards you should just buy singles. If you want Pokémon to be some sort of investment then you treat it as one. Buy product(or singles) when their value is low in hopes that they will increase over time.

The population of people who became rich opening packs they bought themselves for themselves are probably in the same group of people who were struck by lightning, twice in the same day, while scratching a million dollar scratch off.

It’s not a money move. It’s a hobby.

Posted by Wonderful-Sound-8662 · in r/PokemonTCG · 7 months ago

so i just started collecting i use to when i was way younger but decided i wanted to get back into it. I'm not sure which sets are the best to get atm with everything being super expensive atm I kinda wanna make sure whatever I am getting into it slightly worth it. I know not every pack is gonna be a hit or anything like that but some really cool looking cards is what im after im not a reseller or someone that sells their cards I'm just in it for the collecting aspect i bought a psa10 mew card i really liked the other day and one box of terestal festival so far still waiting on it to come in. so any ideas which i should go with? jp or English doesn't really matter to me as I'm just in it for the artwork of the cards and how cool it would look to have a binder full of some stuff. I'm also into grading as well so any cheap high grades that look awesome would also be cool :)

If you don’t care about the value of the cards and genuinely just want the nice arts, go for Korean cards.

1 upvotes on reddit
Informal-Pair-306 · 7 months ago

I just started 6 months ago and spent over £2000. Unsure if this is modest even by beginner standards.

I would say never buy products higher than retail price until you’re sure you want something if it’s no longer in circulation.

Look for Japanese cards on eBay from highly rated sellers which come out really cheap compared to English as well as better card quality in some cases.

Buy from Pokemon centre where you can and trusted well-known large retailers in your country.

Search the official TCG Pokemon page and check out all the cards. Buy the products of the artworks you want for the thrill of opening packs.

Lastly, I’d buy Stellar Crown and Brilliant Stars ETB’s as they’re still widely available and have cool artwork.

1 upvotes on reddit
6am_Kram · 7 months ago

I would recommend SV base set and Twilight Masquerade! Amazing cards/artwork! Honorable mention to Paldean Fates and Stellar Crown. I like Japanese cards but something about being able to read the cards is important to me too. I have some Japanese cards. My rule is if i really like the artwork and it is way cheaper, i buy the Japanese version. Ive never graded cards before, i never feel the need to tbh. I have seen some companies other than PSA that make really cool graded slabs that go along with the artwork of the card tho!

6am_Kram · 7 months ago

Another note, don’t pay scalper prices! Always check that your sealed products are retail price. However, that might be harder to get with Japanese boxes.

Best pokemon card sets to collect

Key Considerations for Collecting Pokémon Card Sets:

  1. Set Popularity: Some sets are more popular due to iconic cards or nostalgia. Sets like Base Set, Jungle, and Fossil are highly sought after by collectors.

  2. Rarity and Value: Look for sets that include rare cards, especially holographic or first edition cards. Sets like Hidden Fates and Shining Legends have valuable shiny Pokémon.

  3. Artwork and Design: Many collectors appreciate the artwork. Sets like XY Evolutions feature classic designs that appeal to long-time fans.

  4. Competitive Playability: Some sets are more relevant in competitive play, making them desirable for players. Sets like Sword & Shield and Sun & Moon have introduced powerful cards for tournaments.

  5. Investment Potential: Consider sets that have shown appreciation in value over time. Vintage sets tend to hold their value better than newer ones.

Recommended Sets to Collect:

  • Base Set (1996): The original set that started it all, featuring iconic Pokémon like Charizard and Pikachu. Highly collectible and valuable.

  • Hidden Fates (2019): Known for its shiny Pokémon cards and the highly sought-after Shiny Charizard GX.

  • Shining Legends (2017): Features shiny Pokémon and has several valuable cards, including Shining Mew and Shining Rayquaza.

  • XY Evolutions (2016): A nostalgic reimagining of the Base Set with updated artwork, making it popular among collectors.

  • Sword & Shield Series (2020-Present): Includes several sets like Vivid Voltage and Chilling Reign, which have introduced powerful cards for competitive play.

Takeaway: Focus on sets that resonate with you personally, whether for nostalgia, artwork, or investment potential. Always check the current market trends and values, as the Pokémon card market can fluctuate.
