TL;DR
Top Valuable Cards
The 1st Edition Base Set Charizard is often cited as one of the most valuable Pokémon cards, especially when graded as a PSA 10 or Beckett 10 [1:1]. Another highly valuable card is the Illustrator Pikachu, which is considered one of the rarest and most sought-after cards in the Pokémon collecting community
[1:2].
Valuable Sets and Editions
Several sets are known for their high value, including the E-era sets like Expedition, Legendary Collection, Skyridge, and Aquapolis [2:1]. These sets contain cards that are both collectible and playable, contributing to their high market value. Additionally, anything featuring Charizard or secret rainbow rares tends to be highly valued by collectors
[2:3].
Factors Influencing Value
The value of Pokémon cards is influenced by factors such as rarity, condition, nostalgia, and demand. Early prints were limited, and mint-condition copies are rare, making them highly sought after [3:1]. The nostalgia factor also plays a significant role, as many collectors are driven by fond memories of Pokémon from their childhood
[3:4]. The market is similar to other collectibles like art or stamps, where certain items are seen as investments
[3:12].
Selling Valuable Cards
For those looking to sell valuable Pokémon cards, it's important to ensure they are well-protected, such as placing them in sleeves [4:1]. Selling options include local card shops, online marketplaces like eBay, or platforms like OfferUp and Facebook Marketplace
[4:4]
[4:9]. It's advisable to research the current market value before selling to ensure you receive a fair price.
Notable Collections
Some collectors have amassed impressive collections worth significant sums. For example, a complete PSA 10 thick stamp 1st edition set was recently valued at around $100,000 [5:1]. Such collections highlight the potential investment value of Pokémon cards, though they should primarily be viewed as collectibles rather than financial assets.
I'm curious. I watched a video that said the most expensive one was around $370,000 but I can't help but feel like there's crazier prices out there.
Illustrator Pikachu
There are lists out there that include these answers
Lots of niche tournament prizes, contest awards, original promo materials, etc from 20+ years ago
The most expensive card ever released is base set charizard graded as a Beckett 10. Specifically Beckett, as their 10 is higher than psas.
The only other cards I can think of which would come close are a set of Pokémon snap cards released in 1999. They were a set of 10 cards, with only 15-20 cards ever being made of them each and all the cards going towards the winner of a competition which was held. These each go for thousands of thousands, and there is in fact an auction going on currently for an ungraded one for about 400,000!
Or valuable sets in general? It’s hard to narrow it down on Troll and Toad. I just wanted to take a look at the most expensive cards.
Ultra prism is pretty valuable, in terms of actual value and playability. Theres a lot of playable cards in that set and because it was in print for such a short amount of time, the prices of sealed ultra prism products has gone up
Thanks, this is just the type of info I love reading about.
Ultramar prism actually stopped printing before the set was even released
Anything Charizard or secret rainbow rare, collectors LOVE Charizard
Look up skyridge cards
First edition Base is definitely a solid, but absurdly expensive option. The E-era (Expedition, Legendary Collection, Skyridge and Aquapolis) are other huge money-makers. The riskiest is probably POP 5 which can have 2 $400+ gold stars. However they’re 1-in-40 packs. And packs are over $100
I’ve always been curious about this why exactly do pokemon cards hold so much value even decades after they first came out cuz some of them sell for insane amounts of money like thousands or even hundreds of thousands of dollars which blows my mind considering they’re just pieces of printed cardboard. I get that rarity and condition play a big role but it feels like there’s more to it than that. Is it mainly nostalgia driving the prices or is there an actual collectible market similar to art, stamps or coins where certain cards are legitimately seen as investments? Personally I could never justify dropping that kind of cash on a card I’d rather just throw it into a few rounds on jackpot city and at least have some fun with it.
It makes me wonder if pokemon cards will always hold value or if it’s just a trend that could crash eventually. What do you think keeps the market so strong for them?
It's a mix of nostalgia and real scarcity wrapped in a giant still-growing brand really.
Early prints were small, mint copies are rare, grading makes "perfect" ones even rarer and a global fanbase keeps demand replenishing as new players age into money.
Hype waves spike prices but markets cycle, and most cards won't fund retirement. Iconic truly scarce pieces tend to hold up best, but it's best to treat it like collecting first and investing second.
I collected Pokémon cards when I was a kid. I had the first 151, all 1st edition (with the exception of mew of course, that was the cinema promo card), in a binder. I traded that whole binder for Digimon cards later and I dread to look up how much money that would be worth now.
Had a similar story, with both pokemon and MTG, including owning a few black lotuses. Not sure what happened to the pokemon, but the guy who thought me and my brother how to play stole all the rare cards saying they were trash and exchanged them for cheap ones
Yeah, the real money is in Cheetos that look like Pokemon. https://www.smithsonianmag.com/smart-news/this-flamin-hot-cheeto-is-shaped-like-a-pokemon-charizard-it-just-sold-for-nearly-90000-at-auction-180986273/
And collectible valuations are largely nonsense. Just because one guy paid a bazillion dollars for a card 8 years ago doesn't mean anyone will today.
The same reason that baseball cards were so valuable in the 90s.
Also, there's the fact that other people who don't care about the products want to get in on the action, so they see it as an investment (like art), and they're driving up the prices a lot more than if they were just left to the actual fans who liked it.
Lots of collectors, fond memories and a great book of business behind it. Baseball cards were super common as one of the most important American sports for a long while, and the collectors are less common now, but are trading on their long, fond history with the sport or they came into it as a business later on as it evolved.
Pokemon collectors, although some are young professionals who got into it, are mostly of the age where they are passionate about the subject matter and collect now. Plus, Millennials are a generation gaining a lot of wealth, and almost all of us have fond memories of Pokemon (cards, Go, games, etc.).
They hold value to people who have nostalgic feelings over Pokemon
Baseball cards, movie props, autographs...none of these things have much actual real world value
The value they hold is to the person who is buying it
Some cards they only make a certain amount of, and people like to collect things they perceive as rare. Some people are willing to pay a lot for them
Most are valued under $1. It's only the super rare stuff that people pay big bucks for to complete a collection.
Yup, 99 percent of them trade for pocket lint and regret.
Sell them on offer up or Facebook marketplace, that way you don’t have to sell at a % at card shows and places like eBay won’t take a % either. Personally I found Facebook marketplace the best
Definitely agree if your looking for absolute full value but sometimes if you have a local card shop they’ll buy pretty close to full value mine buys right around 90% and sometimes that’s a lot easier than listing and waiting days for a specific buyer
Dude my local card shop robs, they are worse than vendor %. I need to go to your LCS!
Do you have any suggestions on what type of card shops to look for
I've never had a brick and mortar shop offer anything close to 90%.
Try and find a local card show and get 80%-85% which is about the same as what you would get from EBay fees and you don’t have to ship multiple packages off
I know you said you aren't interested in selling online but slide me a dm if you change your mind I'll pay market value
OfferUp or Facebook marketplace, be sure to do research on what you’re selling and values before you do.
Put those in a sleeve. Raw dogging your “most valuable” cards is crazy work. You just lost money already
Top-Left: PSA 10 1st edition thick stamp, base set PSA 10 Charizard (last 3 sales: $40k each)
Top-Right: PSA 10 Family Event Trophy Kangaskhan PSA (last 2 sales averaged $25k)
Bottom: The holographic cards in my PSA 10 complete 103-card, thick stamp, 1st edition edition (last two sales averaged $118k)
Once again congrats on completing the PSA-10 Thick stamp set, EnlightenedBulbasaur. :)
Haha, thanks again. :p
103? Is there some variant that you're counting twice? Nice collection!
Pikachu with red cheeks and with yellow cheeks
Are those two separate Shadowless Charizards or are they the same card??
The same card.
By the way, all 1st edition cards are Shadowless, but not all Shadowless cards are 1st edition.
So the totem poll:
1st edition > Shadowless > Unlimited
My parents would flip a shit if they knew what my Pokémon cards would’ve been worth now (not saying that I’d have kept them in perfect condition anyways).
Thick vs Thin refers to the width of the "1" in the 1st edition stamp. The Base Set is the only set with Thick stamps (wide "1"). The Holofoil Rare cards have about 25% Thick stamps and 75% Thin stamps. As for the non-Holo cards, all of them are Thick stamps, with about 0.0001% Thin stamps (mostly production errors). Due to the lower number of Thick stamps in Holofoil cards, as well as consistency with the non-Holo cards being (almost) all Thick stamps, a full Thick stamp set in PSA-10 is quite impressive, and this might possibly be the only complete Thick stamp PSA-10 set out there.
More information about Thick vs Thin stamp, as well as other 1st edition stamps variations like Grey, 2D, 3D, Ghost/Phantom, "d", etc. can be found in this article I wrote.
I'm a high school social studies teacher lol.
I bought these cards when they were only a tiny fraction of what they would sell for now.
Man you could sell and invest and have this money do a lot more work for you than the cards are doing in cases. Fuck
In Japan, this card was released through the Parent/Child Mega Battle tournament held in May 1998. The prize was awarded to those parent and children teams who had reached a certain number of wins.
So my basic plan is to rank Pokémon species by how likely the species of Pokémon itself is causing the value to increase. I tried my best to isolate the coolness factor and rarity of the card, so places where Pokémon have the same basically the same card like
This list is by no means all inclusive and I’d love feedback and debate. I added some commentary on some of by hotter takes.
Some general thoughts before I get to the list, obviously the original 151 dominate. As I said this isn’t comprehensive, everything I’m listing is going to have a high tier. Within the tier, the Pokémon aren’t really sorted, unless mentioned, like charizard clearly being above the other S-tier.
S+: Unbreon- the sole S plus tier IMO.
highlights- gold star Umbreon, unseen forces Umbreon, first edition Neo Discovery, Moonbreon
Duds- arguably none, maybe classic collection Umbreon Star. The only real question is could Umbreon carry a whole modern set by itself like the number 2 Pokémon on the list, Zard has to do regularly? An argument could be made that Unbreon card values are immensely helped by the fact there are other eeveelutions usually in the set.
S: Charizard- I covered a lot of this in Umbreon, but the fact that all of the modern generations have 3+ awesome charizard chase cards actually hinders their overall chance at success. Obsidian flames and Darkness ablaze are two of the lesser sets in their generations. The most obvious recent counter point to charizard behind Umbreon is shiny vault Charizard gx >>>>>> unbreon gx. I wasn’t following as closely back then, so if anyone in comments knows if this has to do with pull rates, I’d love to hear it.
Also in S: Rayquaza, Lugia, Mew,
mewtwo- definitely the lowest of the S-tier and at a huge risk of falling out. Number one reason I kept it here cause gold star mewtwo is still such a banger. I think in the end what is holding it back is not the species but rather the fact that his biggest recent cards have been in sets printed to oblivion (CZ and pogo). I think that’s why people have circled back to Mewtwo GX secret #78.
S-: Pikachu- obviously still a super star, but as there have been so many Pikachu chase cards and attempts by the Pokémon company to make them chase cards, there have been some relative duds. I think the fact the vivid voltage is one of the least sought after SS sets speaks volumes (and should be at least a slight warning sign about surging sparks).
Also in S-: Espeon, Gengar, Blastoise, Venusaur
A+: Gyarados, Snorlax, Dragonite, Gardevoir, Giratina-O,
A: Celebi, Suicune, T-tar, Kyogre, Groudon, and….
magikarp- two bangers in the past three sets. The fact that magikarp 203 is THE chase card of PE and is only an illustration rare speaks volumes. Team up karp is the other big modern winner.
A-: latios, latias, vaporeon, flareon, Jolteon, sylveon, (one of the big what ifs of the sword and shield series to me is what numbers alt art vaporeon, jolteon, and flareon would have hit had they not been promos)
metagross- just my favorite Pokémon so arguably too high, but it’s my list and this is where he is staying
Honorable mentions: greninja, zapdos, moltres, articuno, Kingdra, all the other 151 (give them the right rarity and coolness factor and anything can pop. Examples include skyridge Starmie, shining kabutops, team up exeggutor and rowlet, Pokémon center charmander and magneton.) leafeon, glaceon, Salamence, garchomp, raikou, Suicune, entei
Finally a bot from r/Pokémon tcg sent me to this discussion board, which looks to be mostly people posting pictures of cards. I’m just looking for an audience for my work. If this isn’t the right forum, no harm.
Cheers.

Sorry for the huge list and I know its a ton of work but if they are clean I'd be willing to purchase a ton, thank you!!
Just wondering if my pokemon card collection is worth anything? I’ve seen the Charizard going for crazy money but I’m not too well educated in what makes one more valuable than the next?
The protective booklet they are in currently looks a little crinkled for its 20+ year ago but I assure you the cards are all in close to if not perfect condition. They have barely ever been removed from the protective book.
Thanks all 🙂
Those first two pages are great! Condition definitely will be what determines how valuable they are. Especially of the Zard, Blastoise, and Venusaur.
If only you could move the 1st edition stamps over to the base set.... Nice collection nonetheless and close to a thousand from what I see
Sorry mate what does this mean?
He’s saying your cards would be worth more if they were different cards
The 1st edition stamps that are on the latter pages. If they were on the first page it would change the value tenfold. That Charizard alone would go from a couple hundred to nearly 8 to 10 thousand or more, although it would need to be professionally graded. If they're really near perfect that's what you should look into. PSA grading Page 14 for example the symbol on the left is a 1st edition stamp and the symbol on the right is a set symbol. The first pages with no set symbol are most valuable if they had that 1st edition stamps. Still altogether I estimated the value near 1000usd
Man I wish I still had my collection, idk what happened to it smh
The one thing I’m glad I’ve held onto all these years 🙂
Same here dude
Hi Folks. I've been deep in the grading game recently. It became clear to me that not all cards are worth grading. And thanks to your feedback I've made some updates to the Pokemon card grading tool I've been working on, it's completely free: https://gradinghunt.com/
Let me know if you like the site.
Examples:
It's 100% free, has automatic weekly prices updates from trusted sources, I'm hoping other Pokemon graders will find value from it, like I have. Feel free to reach out to me if you have any questions too: https://gradinghunt.com/
Is the yellow return supposed to signify gold? Also youre picking up cost of normal cards and giving the PSA value of their masterball version. Ex.prismatic
Yeah yellow represents excellent
>Umbreon VMAX (Evolving Skies): Raw: $671 → PSA 10: $2875
Not to shit on your tool or anything. But where are you getting your pricing data from? The cheapest Umbreon VMAX (Evolving Skies) on TCGPlayer is $900, and that's in damaged condition. I'd love to know what is returning $671 for Umbreon VMAX, especially ones in conditions that are worth grading.
Hi friend - thanks for pointing this out. There was a bug in my code due to my own human error but I've fixed it now. Umbreon VMAX is now showing at 1343.82 $.
where do you find a raw moonbreon for 600? easy 1200 around me
Yooo thanks for pointing this out. Turns out there was a bug in my code (human error ugh). I've fixed it now and its showing 1343.82$. Glad you commented that
Cool! Would recommend population amd gem rate numbers.
I second this! I think it would be absolutely huge to have gem rate numbers. A high ROI is nice, but that combined with gem rate takes this tool to the next level!
This is great.
You should try to incorporate the gem rate into this as well to help find cards that are more likely to get 10’s than others IF graded. I know it depends on the specific card in hand but some cards (Magikarp) are hard to get 10’s in.
Thanks! Yep I've considered adding graded data - though I will need to then collaborate with PSA somehow (to use their data).
They do have a public API but I believe that it is rate limited. I’d think if you were going to incorporate it you’d want a cron job or something that runs on an interval and saves the results. Just my 2 cents though!
Can’t you just scrape? Or do they have an api
I am an avid sports card collector and always looking to yen a profit. I always come across Pokémon and have tried to understand and grasp just the monetary value really. I can’t seem to find some of the cards for sale or that have sold for a reference and don’t know whether to invest or not. Are these worth purchasing and how much would you pay? There are many others but I think these are the better ones of the lot.
That makes sense then why I can’t I find them.
You can’t find most of them because they are very fake cards, not even close to looking like the originals (the gold ones don’t even exist)
A lot of those cards look fake
But I don’t understand Pokémon enough to known exactly what I’m searching for. For instance when I isolate the Glaceon VMaAX, that specific card with 340hp has no sales record. I can’t even find a picture of it in images. I just can’t grasp Pokémon
most valuable pokemon cards
Key Considerations for Valuable Pokémon Cards:
Rarity: Cards that are rare, such as first editions or promotional cards, tend to be more valuable. Look for cards marked as "1st Edition" or those released in limited quantities.
Condition: The condition of the card is crucial. Cards graded by professional services (like PSA or BGS) can significantly increase in value. A grade of 9 or 10 is ideal.
Popularity: Cards featuring popular Pokémon, especially iconic ones like Charizard, Pikachu, and Mewtwo, often fetch higher prices due to demand.
Set and Series: Certain sets are more sought after than others. For example, cards from the Base Set, especially first edition holographic cards, are highly valued.
Market Trends: The Pokémon card market can fluctuate. Keeping an eye on current trends and auction results can help you gauge the value of specific cards.
Notable High-Value Cards:
Recommendation: If you're looking to invest or collect, focus on obtaining cards from the Base Set, especially first editions, and consider getting them graded to maximize their value. Always research current market prices and trends before making a purchase.
