We don't do any politics or negative content on Best of NJ. We let other outlets rack up the clickbait/ragebait social media engagement, and instead just settle for positively promoting local businesses throughout the state (focusing on small independent spots and avoiding franchises and chains, for the most part). It gets fewer comments on Instagram but it's less depressing, so it feels like a net win.

Looking for suggestions for anniversary dinner

Posted by OffroadWheelchair · in r/newjersey · 2 years ago

My first anniversary is coming up soon and I’m looking for suggestions for a nice restaurant. Good food obviously but the environment is something I’d really like to be nice too. I’m on the border of Ocean and Monmouth but willing to drive a little bit. Thanks in advance!

EDIT: thank you all! I’ve never heard of the vast majority of the suggestions so this was very helpful! We are now deciding between a few of them.

Drew's Bayshore Bistro in Keyport - best food around. You can look at photos online to see if the ambiance is for you, but imo the food is worth it

It’s a bit more flexible than it appears, although the abandonment of a la carte dining is strange.

My wife and I recently did the three course, and each course had a decent handful of options; we each chose completely different and shared everything 50-50, so it was more of a tasting menu approach. The food itself is as good as ever, and the pacing was just spot on.

  • Rat’s restaurant, in Grounds for Sculpture (Hamilton).

  • The Frog & the Peach (New Brunswick).

  • Lokal Eatery (Jersey City)

  • Saddle River Inn (Saddle River)

I’ve never had a date night, but those places are top notch in the ambiance department, as well as good food, even at a premium.

Frog and peach is a fantastic option, place has very nice ambience and the food is killer. They often have a very nice tasting menu as well.

Quiet, romantic date spots in Princeton

Posted by Appropriate_Cable645 · in r/princeton · 6 months ago

Can anyone recommend places to go on a date in the Princeton area that tend to be quiet and have a kind of intimate feel in the evening? I'm looking to get together with someone where we can talk quietly without being overheard and not have to shout over music, but also have a little bit of an atmosphere going versus sitting somewhere in dead silence. Could be somewhere for drinks or a meal, or something outside that standard range possibly too. Bonus points if the setting allows for sitting close to each other rather than across a table. Thanks!

Ok, so if you have a car and are up for kind of an adventure, I really adored the Black Bass Hotel in Lumberville, PA. Might be more of a cozy Fall activity that you can pair with exploring New Hope…

For Princeton, I actually think Eno Terra is kind of a vibe (technically Kingston but not far). Agricola is great but I don’t know how date-y it feels to me. Mediterra is also nice.

I wish someone would open a low light tea house with a “small world after dark” vibe for cocktails and light bites.

The most romantic place in the area is The Boat House in Lambertville. It’s very small and no food but good drinks and intimate. Try it on a weeknight as it doesn’t allow people standing after all seats are taken.

A few suggestions...

  • Lorena's in Maplewood (classic French; right by the train station which could be convenient for some but wouldn't help you on the RVL)
  • Faugourg in Montclair (modern French; our go-to for a nearby fancy dinner; we actually like to go for lunch too and pair it with a walk around downtown Montclair for shopping, movie, etc)
  • Heirloom Kitchen in Old Bridge (American fine dining; prixe fixe or tasting menus; owner was on Top Chef and does collab dinner events and also owns a great restaurant in Asbury Park; if you do go, choose the "back counter" section, it's a second row chef's table which gives you a great view but also let's you have a semi-private dinner with your partner since your not on top of the kitchen staff)
  • Xunta in Caldwell (Spanish/Basque tapas; feels more authentic than most tapas restaurants; we love to bring first-time friends and family here because of the fun experience of ordering and sharing everything)

Good point about BYO. You can buy bottles of wine at Heirloom if you forget or aren't picky. And they do have seasonal non-alcoholic drinks that sounded good and would probably go well with a splash of something if you bring a small bottle

De Novo for a fantastic view over the Husdon, sometimes live band, food is above average Euro-Americana pub fare, valet parking only. $$$

Soba Noodle Azuma for a quiet Japanese local spot, authentic food and speed of service. No alcohol served here $$

Pintxo y Tapas, Spanish cuisine in a family style, lowkey vibe. Great food and wine variety, not too far from the spa. $$$

Higher end restaurants for a romantic night out

Posted by mmeola97 · in r/newjersey · 4 years ago

Ok so I'm in the kenilworth area but im willing to drive a bit if necessary. I want to take wife out to a really nice place. Like not button down shirt nice but suit and tie and dress nice. I'm sorry if I'm explaining this badly. I only just moved back to jersey and I don't remember the area really well. I'm in no rush cuz I have a lot of planning to do for other aspects of the night so if I need to make a reservation like a few months in advance that's fine. Anything helps thank you
