TL;DR
Lambertville/New Hope
Lambertville and New Hope are highly recommended for a weekend getaway. These quaint towns offer scenic views across the Delaware River and are filled with charming shops, restaurants, and wineries [1:1]
[3:1]. The area is great for walking trails and exploring local attractions like Howell Living Farm for fall festivities
[2:2].
Cape May
Cape May is another popular destination, known for its beautiful beaches and historic Victorian architecture [1:9]
[4:1]. It's ideal for those looking to relax by the ocean while enjoying local dining and shopping. The area offers a quieter atmosphere during off-peak seasons, making it perfect for a peaceful retreat.
Montclair
For those seeking a getaway accessible by train, Montclair offers a vibrant arts scene and diverse dining options [5:5]. The town is walkable and has several cultural attractions, including an art museum and various events throughout the year
[5:1]. It's easily reachable via NJ Transit, making it convenient for travelers without a car.
Hudson Valley
The Hudson Valley region, including towns like Beacon and Cold Spring, provides picturesque landscapes and outdoor activities [2:1]
[5:6]. This area is particularly lovely in the fall, offering opportunities for hiking and visiting local farms for apple picking and pumpkin patches
[2:7].
Delaware Water Gap
For nature enthusiasts, the Delaware Water Gap is a fantastic option. It offers stunning natural scenery and numerous hiking trails [3:3]. Nearby attractions include Shawnee Mountain and Camelback Resort, which provide accommodations and additional recreational activities
[3:2].
Trying to do a weekend getaway for two days. We are based out of Jersey city, NJ.
Ideally wife andI would love to have see some exquisite views some fun activities and relax good food etc. I read up a little about rhode island (newport area) i.e the mansions the cliff walk wineyard. Also know a little about pocono mountains in Pennsylvania. Could we get any other suggestions ?
Longwood Gardens is wonderful….while in the area the Brandywine Museum (centered on the Wythe family) and Brandywine Battlefield are nice visits
Great idea! Not too far from Lancaster either. Don't do Lancaster on Sunday, many attractions closed. Weekend getaway, Lancaster Friday or Saturday, Longwood gardens Friday Saturday or Sunday. Beautiful this time of year. Daytime is nice, night visit best with Christmas lights
Great idea this time of year. I just stayed at Alpenhof B&B near there and it's an amazing warm and romantic getaway close to Longwood.
Mystic, CT. It is a fun weekend getaway and the nearby casinos add some excitement at night.
Fourth! Lots of stuff to see and do. Beautiful waterfalls, wineries, restaurants, B & B's.
Cape May
Alternately, Ocean Grove. More year-round but smaller and churchier.
Third! The Fox and Grapes B&B is a great place to stay too.
Idk I've gone in March and it was great. Colder, but empty and no annoying ppl. It helped we rented a place with a grill and a hot tub, though.
I'll second this. Lived in Syracuse a couple years, lots of beautiful places in the area.
fifth. They have some great restaurants I can recommend
Rhode Island near the coast can be nice, this time of year--quiet, without the summer tourists, but still nice enough to enjoy the sights. Also some nice places in Maine, which is really only about 5-6 hours from J.C.
The New Hope/Lambertville area is quaint, scenic, and a great place to spend a weekend. Lots of different things to see and do. Especially recommended if you've never been to that part of NJ--it's so much different than northeast Jersey.
Looking for a nice getaway for 2-3 days in October to enjoy the fall weather and festivities. We love the Smithville/Absecon area but been there many times.
Any other recommendations for a couple? Not wanting to drive as far as Boston, but anywhere in a closer range where we can enjoy prime autumn time. Could be a quiet weekend but we'd love to enjoy some fall-ish stuff involving apples/pumpkins/farms etc too.
I can do this one all day.
New Hope / Lambertville (across the delaware from each other)and about an hour and a half drive
Hudson Valley (Beacon , cold spring, West Point area)
NewPort RI. Not the best for foliage but it’s very nice in early October because the prices go down and it’s not as crowded.
Berkshires are great this time of year, and there’s a couple nice towns with antiques and galleries etc
Windham NY. More of a ski area but it’s nice this time of year
Greenport LI, lots of wineries etc
Tacking on to Lambertville, there's an awesome corn maze if OP wants fall festivities: Howell Living Farm
Northern Connecticut is beautiful! Has the feel of New England but is only 2.5 hours from Jersey depending on where you are
Bear my and Harriman state park
7 lakes drive is awesome during fall..
The Hudson Valley is lovely. New Paltz, Stone Ridge, etc.
Be sure to hit up Mohonk!
Catskill area is good, quiet and not too far.
Hello everyone,
Me and my husband are looking for 7/4th long weekend get away ideas. Ideally we're looking for a 1/2 nights stay, ~1-1.5h drive from South Orange, NJ and we'll have our car with us. We're pretty new to NJ so haven't explored much outside of our own neighborhood suburbs. We enjoy the outdoors, nature, hiking, wine, trying out local shops & restaurants so would like to have local hotels, restaurants & shops open over that long weekend. Any thoughts or ideas based on your own travels are greatly appreciated!
As the poster below said the Delaware Water Gap. Right over the bridge on Route 80 in Pa was a hotel. You could drive to Stroudsburg PA has a few Hotels to stay overnight. Nearby is Shawnee Mountain and a little farther is Camel Back. There are a lot of different attractions in the area also in that area.
https://www.camelbackresort.com/
This will take you to Google maps of hotels in the area - Stroudsburg Hotels
Have you been to the Delaware water gap? Lots of nature and cute local stuff
Hi, thanks for the quick response. No we've only explored Pittsburg in PA. Do you have any recommendations for where to stay and places to eat there? Many thanks!!
Thank you all for your wonderful suggestions, immensely helpful and appreciated!
Lambertville/New Hope. Charming towns filled with restaurants and shops. Great walking trails on both sides of the river. Lots of wineries in the area.
I’m from south jersey and I’m looking for cool places to visit in neighboring states in mid-November, preferably within a 5-6 hour drive. I usually just go to Florida when I’m on vacation but I’ve been a few times in the last year and I’m looking for new experiences. I’m late 20s, childless, like outdoor experiences, drinking, historic sites, etc. Any suggestions?
It may be a bit far, but Acadia National Park in Maine https://acadiamagic.com/ is one of the most beautiful places on the east coast- especially this time of year. Its about a 7hr trip, but lots of great places to stop on the way- Portsmouth NH, Boston...
Went to Bar Harbor for the first time this summer--very nice.
I have yet to go to Annapolis, but I hear really good things about it.
Washington DC, Niagara Falls, Thousand Islands, Pittsburgh, Boston, Baltimore... I’m also always looking for road trips. Lemme know if you wanna take a road trip together! :)
Washington DC, definitely DC. Unless you just utterly hate museums.
Their zoo is amazing. Go to the zoo.
Just got back from Hyde Park in NY. Toured the Roosevelt and Vanderbilt historic sites. Stopped at a winery on the up and a brewery on the way back.
It's not out of state, but I live in north Jersey and I love Cape May.
My wife and I have been upstate many times, and she wants a change. Do you have recs for a nice walkable little town, perhaps off NJ transit, to get away for the weekend?
We're thinking along the lines of Cold Spring, Beacon, or any of those cute towns on the Hudson River line, except in NJ. Thanks!
Check out Montclair! Nice ethnic restaurants - a bit of a walk from the train station if you are getting off the Watchung station. You can get off the Lackawanna station which is better.
It wouldn't hurt to rent car if you hit the Shore.
I've been to pretty much all the Jersey Shore beaches - you pay to get into some of the beaches. Seaside Heights and Ashbury Park are similar to Coney Island. My favorite is Point Pleasant - it caters to the adults with outdoor bars and an aquarium if you got kids. It's cleaner than the others. LBI, Ship Bottom, Beach Haven is much quieter - geared more for the older retiree crowd. Wildwood which is further out has a cool retro Doo Wop Museum - a friend got married there. Cape May is a bird lover's paradise with Victorian houses.
Yes, come to Montclair! We’ve got great stores and restaurants, a very good art museum, and lots of events. And it’s very walkable. For downtown Montclair, get off on the Bay Street Station.
Between Memorial Day to Labor Day you pay to get on almost every single beach except like four or five. Then there’s a few where you pay to park (sandy hook and island beach state park).
Asbury Park and Ocean Grove are great!
Can I ask this in reverse? What's OP's list of upstate NY train accessible, no car needed weekend getaways?
Cold Spring, Beacon, Poughkeepsie, Hudson... Pretty much any stop on that MTA line that goes up along the Hudson River is gonna stop in a scenic walkable town
Don’t have any suggestions but I love Cold Spring/Bear Mountain SO MUCH
Maplewood and Milburn are both pretty nice! Not sure about lodging though. They both have nice little downtowns with shopping, restaurants, etc. and both are walking distance to South Mountain Reservation with miles and miles of hiking trails.
You could also do Summit, which has an even better downtown scene than those two. It's a bit more of a walk (30 mins or so) but it is walkable to the Wachtung Reservation for hiking.
Montclair is well known for shopping and the arts scene.
There's also Morristown for a good mix of history, food and drink, and shopping.
I’m looking to do a quick weekend vacation like nothing crazy just to rest a little and ideally somewhere with good food some nice nature to walk and not packed with tourists or loud bachelor parties. Trying to stay within like a 2 hour radius from central NJ since we don’t want to burn half the weekend sitting in traffic. Been a weirdly busy month with a lot of life stuff like our wedding planning like our venue (we're going with Liberty House) our prenup (we might be going with Neptune) and a bunch of other stuff so we just wanna get away for at least a weekend or so haha. Would appreciate any local spot you've got! Not looking for 5 stars hotel stuff just somewhere that feels like a break
A couple of summers ago, my husband and I had an unexpectedly free weekend, so we hopped over to PA to Lake Wallenpaupack for an overnight. Went to a couple of nice breweries, hiked and swam a bit, and just had a really relaxing time. Highly recommend. We stayed at a little place with rustic hotel rooms - there are tons of hotel/motel/camping/cabin options out that way that won't cost you an arm and a leg.
Catskills. Way better than PA, Woodstock, hunter, saugherties, there’s some really nice little quiet places.
I second this. The Catskills are great! We went earlier this year. These are the articles I wrote about our trip if you need help with an itinerary. https://www.gardenstateglobetrotter.com/new-york
Yup. Family has a house in windham. It’s amazing. Tons of trials, lakes and great spots to see. No crowds. Not touristy. Bring bug spray 😊
New Hope, PA and the surrounding little towns on both the PA and NJ side bordering the river.
Would suggest the Woolverton Inn (Stockton, NJ) if you want to stay in a B&B. They have sheep!
New Hope is a complete tourist trap. Granted, while it does have a cute-buccholic-town-in-the-middle-of-the-suburbs vibe, it's location packs it full of daytripper tourists from New York, Philadelphia, and everywhere in between.
Only problem is New Hope packed with tourists
Check out Frenchtown, too. A weekend is enough to enjoy the river towns.
If you like outdoor activities check how far you are from the Delaware Water Gap, the Poconos, or New Paltz, NY
Came in here to suggest New Paltz. Once a year I rent an Airbnb nestled into the woods about a mile from town, overlooking the Shawangunk mountains. It’s so nice. And right off the NY thruway which is convenient.
Mohonk Preserve is an amazing place to spend the day too. The carriage trails, walking trails, tower, the hotel, and the rock climbing are awesome
New paltz and the Catskills are great in the summer.
Hi –
In a couple of weeks, I'll be taking a road trip from Maryland to upstate New York.
The route will take me along the NJ turnpike. On the way back to Maryland, I'd like to stop and spend the night somewhere: a quaint tourist-friendly downtown, or somewhere with hiking trails, or something similarly relaxing and picturesque.
Anything within 30 minutes of the turnpike is fair game.
Got any suggestions?
Thanks!
Lambertville
31 minutes from the Turnpike, disqualified
Like u/Starboard44 said in another comment, you're not gonna find what OP is looking for right along the Turnpike; quaint towns and beautiful nature tend not to fare so well right next to a huge freeway, let alone one through the most densely populated state.
The whole state is only 30 mins from the turnpike if you drive correctly
Lambertville/Hopewell/Princeton area is a great suggestion. Lots of nature and a few decent downtowns (from small to larger).
Also have the old steam train right across the bridge in New Hope.
Came here to suggest this. New Hope, PA is right across the bridge and is so great - especially in the fall.
Lambertville is not really within 30 minutes of the Turnpike, tho.
Princeton!
Google maps says 23 minutes from Turnpike Exit 8.
I appreciate the map restriction... but fyi the "quaintness" and distance from the Turnpike are usually correlated!
Princeton is cute
Lambertville/New Hope area. You can also walk along the canal too or hike in Washington Crossing park.
I'm trying to find some like cove haven with activities, but also more modern than cove haven all those poconos resorts. Can anyone recommend places?
While not the activities/resort scene there are a few BnB’s in New Hope. We had stayed at the Carriage House and it was nice and right near the main strip.
Crystal Springs Resort is nice. https://www.crystalgolfresort.com/
OP if you do Crystal Springs be sure to get a reservation at Latour
Thanks for all of the suggestions
New Hope and Crystal Springs are great options. You can always hit a shore point or even stay in a nice air bnb in a nice town in Bergen county. There’s a lot to do anywhere you stay.
I want to go away with my best friend for the weekend. We want to relax so bad- we were thinking poconos but also really want an outdoor hot tub or something lol. Any suggestions?
I really enjoy visiting Stroudsburg and Hawley in PA.
Your best friend?
Stay in a cityview room in Weehawken and do a Spa day at Sojo Spa? It's the biggest spa in NJ. 7 floors.
Try Cape May. There are so many hotels & bed & breakfasts, I love it there. Maybe there's something open!
Appreciate the input!
Want to be packed in like a sardine you can probably find a place down the shore. I'd say try out west jersey or Pennsylvania near a lake in an airbnb for a few days.
If you're into Electronica Music, lots of people are dumping their Electric Zoo 3 day tickets.
Requirements:
Lots of people are dumping out of Covid fears or Vaccine requirements.
Where to buy tickets:
/r/electriczoo
if you haven't booked something by now you've missed the boat
Cause they’re booked or now overly priced?
Both honestly. Last weeks of August/early September will be be pretty busy with everyone trying to squeeze a last minute vacation in.
Not in New Jersey but Lake George, NY. Beautiful lake and you might be able to find something.
Gonna give it a look! Thank you
