Outdoor Adventures and Scenic Spots
New Jersey offers a variety of outdoor activities perfect for couples. Sandy Hook is ideal for biking or walking, providing scenic views and fresh air [1:2]. For those interested in hiking, Sourland Mountain Preserve and Round Valley Reservoir offer beautiful trails
[4:2], while Parvin State Park near Vineland provides a peaceful escape into nature
[2:4]. If you're visiting in November, consider exploring Northern NJ parks for hikes with vistas
[5:1].
Unique Date Ideas
For something unique, Grounds for Sculpture in Hamilton is highly recommended; it's an outdoor sculpture park that offers a unique blend of art and nature [5:2]
[5:6]. The Warwick Drive-in Theater provides a nostalgic movie experience under the stars
[3:4]. Another interesting spot is the Somerville traffic circle where WWI ended, offering a quirky historical anecdote
[5:3].
Cultural and Entertainment Options
Couples can enjoy cultural experiences such as catching a show at venues like MPAC in Morristown or Count Basie Theater in Red Bank [3:1]. For music lovers, Asbury Park offers live music and a vibrant atmosphere
[4:1]. Additionally, the NJ Symphony Orchestra hosts pop shows that can be a delightful evening out
[1:3].
Seasonal Events and Festivals
During late November, Clinton hosts "Dickens Days," featuring horse-drawn carriages and carolers dressed in Victorian attire, creating a festive and romantic atmosphere [5:5]. This event is perfect for couples looking to immerse themselves in holiday cheer.
Indoor Fun and Games
For indoor fun, Monster Mini-Golf in Edison or Eatontown offers a playful date night option [1:2]. Escape rooms and paint-and-sip sessions at Pinot's Palette provide interactive experiences that are both entertaining and engaging
[4:3].
These diverse options ensure that couples in New Jersey have plenty of opportunities to create memorable experiences together, whether they prefer outdoor adventures, cultural events, or unique date ideas.
My husband and I are looking for fun experiences, date night ideas in lieu of our typical dinner dates. Any suggestions on cool places, or experiences?!
We've already done a couple of weird NJ stops so that gives you an idea of what we're into.
Edit: we live in the Middlesex area and don't mind a longer drive even if its for a day trip 😀
More ideas (courtesy of my GF).
Monster Mini-Golf in Edison or Eatontown.
Biking or walking in Sandy Hook. Did that the other day when the weather was nice.
Woodbridge has a community center that has a decent mini-golf course and there's a few good restaurants nearby (Woodbridge Brewery near the train station) - This one I actually came up with (proud of myself for thinking of this).
NJ is full of green spaces- check out your local arboretums, gardens, and nature centers. The Audubon groups often have beginner birdwatching walks for cheap or no fee.
See if your library offers free passes to anything. Mine has one for Storm King. If you’re a Bank of America customer, they have a museums on us program that gets you in for free.
Get some puzzles or board games! You can even rent a dm to try out a role playing game like dungeons and dragons.
Ocean community college has laser light shows
The NJ symphony is amazing. They do pop shows and also play soundtracks live with the movie showing in the background
Find a live rocky horror picture show or go to your local schools play or musical
Do a scavenger hunt or geocaching
Escape room or rock gym. Some malls even have nerf arenas
Try something new. Take a random lesson for a sport or hobby. Fencing? Curling? Sailing? Shooting range? Archery?
Camping?
This is awesome! Thank you so much for sharing! We do play DnD so maybe we can try renting a dm! Also i did not know BOA offered the museum passes, very good to know! Thabks again!
Indoor or outdoor Mini golf, medieval times in lyndhurst, the pool at harrah’s in AC, historic new hope, historic smithville, Columbus farmers market/flea market, aquarium, zoo, museum, Dinner cruise (spirit of NJ cruises or river lady in Tom’s river as examples)
A rough idea of the area you're in would help. I mean, if you live in Atlantic City, you're probably not going to want to travel three hours up to Sussex County just for Date Night.
We honestly don't mind a drive as we'd just make it a day trip. We live in the Middlesex area.
I'm constantly on the hunt for date ideas. One of my girlfriend's primary love languages is Quality Time, so date ideas are a big deal with her.
These are in Monmouth County and within driving distance of that. These are mostly brainstorming ideas. Some are restaurants, sorry.
Red Bank, NJ - Killer restaurants, good bars for an after-dinner drink and when the weather is good, really good to walk hand-in-hand and sit by the water on one of the benches. I've personally tried, and can recommend Greek Spot, Bistro, Teak, Ellis Backyard, and Dublin House (after dinner drink). We walked around and wound up on a bench near the water making out. My favorite date night place so far.
Count Basie Theater - Have seen a few shows there. Any theater in the area is a good way to spend a couple of hours followed by a drink/walk/restaurant visit.
Grounds For Sculpture in Hamilton Twp, NJ - Take the tour and then eat at Rats French Restaurant on-site (if the weather is nice, the patio is really cool).
Fox Hollow Vineyards in Holmdel, NJ. Been here a few times. Pretty cool.
Columbus Flea Market and Farmer's Market and Iron Plow Winery in Columbus, NJ. Good for a drive, wander around the flea market and then have a drink or two at Iron Plow Winery.
Movie night - Can't go wrong with a good movie. Saw Equalizer 3 and Dumb Money. Next move is Napolean.
Asbury Park, Ocean Grove, Bradley Beach, etc. boardwalks - When the weather is nice and it's not jam packed full of people during the summer months, great place to get outdoors.
Long Branch, NJ - The Wine Loft, Beach Bee Meadery, boardwalk and a few good restaurants there.
Picnic in Joe Palaia Park in Ocean, NJ. Supposedly Holmdel Park is REALLY good for a picnic and a good walk.
Thompson Park in Lincroft, NJ - We've been bicycling there a couple times.
Uncle Vinnie's Comedy Club - Saw a few shows there.
Eastmont Orchards
Kunya Siam Thai Restaurant - Atlantic Highlands. I'd never had Thai food, so it was a good experience.
Golden Nugget Flea market then go to New Hope and Lambertville Station
Smithville, NJ - Christmas lights. Dickens on 11/25-26. https://www.historicsmithville.com/
Peddler's Village (Restaurants and walk)
New Brunswick - Frog and the Peach
Westfield - Addam's Tavern - Elm St
Westfield - 1958 Cuban Restaurant
Cranford supposedly has good restaurants
Tomasello Winery - https://tomasellowinery.com/
Horseback Riding - https://rideatlegacy.com/
Game night one of our houses with friends.
Great Adventure in Jackson - Haven't been there since I was 13 yrs old.
Escape Room
Cooking Class for two
adventureaquarium.com
turtlebackzoo.com
Beverage Makers - https://discovercentralnj.com/beverage-makers/
OH MY GOD! You are the real MVP right now!!! Thank you so so much for this!! You're also an awesome partner to your gf for having such an awesome and extensive list!
Full disclosure, because I never claim credit for someone else's work. My GF came up with over half of these. I'm actually God awful at coming up with date ideas and have only recently really made a concerted effort with coming up with and planning dates. Whenever I see one of these posts, I always try to help with ideas because I know how hard it is to keep the relationship interesting and fun.
This guy fucks
I don't really know if this is weird or not but I mean who cares right? My wife and I (in our 30's) moved to Vineland a little over two years ago and my God is it boring. Nothing's ever really going on and if we do find something interesting it's like 2 hours away in North Jersey. Yes, I know we moved to a pretty "rural" place but anyone have any like date suggestions? I don't mean like restaurants or anything, just like things to do. We came from close to the Philly area so we're not looking for anything over there. Some of our interests: flea markets, hands on classes, walking trails, swimming. Honestly the best thing we've found around us so far is Wheaton Arts and we've seen it so many times now that it's getting a bit stale. So I guess I'm looking for some hidden gems around the Vineland area, I'd say the furthest for travel would be about an hour or so. Any help would be great!
Check out Pitman. Nice walkable downtown with restaurants, pubs, shops and even the Broadway theater that has some really good shows. Broadway (the Main Street) is really hopping on a weekend night when the weather is nice and there’s a show.
Seconding downtown pitman and adding downtown Mullica hill. Lots of cute shops
My friend just opened an art studio in Pitman. Check out Bette Clark school of Art 💚
I came here to suggest Basto Village, if you've never been. 🌲
Smithville. It's about 15 mins outside of Atlantic City. Perfect to walk around, eat, shop. There is also the Noyes museum down there and a wildlife refuge. There is tubing/canoeing/kayaking at The Palace down by Mays Landing on Rt 168/322. Down by you is Parvin State Park that has hiking trails and other things.
Cape May Zoo is great and only about35-45 minutes from Vineland. Downtown Cape May is only another 20 minutes from there.
You're close to Belleplain State Forest which has some great trails.
We've done the Cape May Zoo with the kids and it was a great time! Thanks for your suggestions, we'll have to check out the State Forrest!
Wildwood. It's the perfect time of year to come down for a beach day and then to hit the boardwalk at night. There's also The Silver Bullet dolphin watch. It's a speedboat that also looks for dolphins. It's a lot of fun. They same company does parasailing, if that's something you'd be into.
Have you done the rail car ride in cape may, it’s a fun time and it byob
The Edelman Fossil Park just opened up and is a stone's throw from Pitman
A good hiking/mountain bike trail is the Maurice River bluffs. If able, I’d recommend getting some mountain bikes. There are endless trails around here for hiking and biking. A lot of people are involved in powersports, like atvs and such. Millville has a motorsports part where you can go to watch races, drive go-karts and things of that nature. You can take your off road toys there too. Right around the corner from that is Glasstown Brewery. It can get packed but it’s a fun place to go. If you’re interested in the glass scene, Salem Community College has summer classes open to the public where you can blow glass yourself. Check out their website, just about everything is on there. They also hold the International Flameworking Contest there once a year, it’s pricy but it’s a good time. I believe the Brass Tap still does trivia nights every week, or at least they used to. That’s a nice place that you can go to chill and make friends.
Oh wow! Thank you for all of these suggestions. We'll absolutely be taking a glass blowing class!
There is a Pitman Craft Fair Saturday May 17. It is really great. There are shuttles from parking lots to downtown. Go to: https://www.pitmancraftshow.com
High end ethnic food.
Activities:
Drive-in movies in far south New Jersey. https://www.delseadrive-in.com/
The Warwick Drive-in theater ends up being closer for me
Theres kind of a hidden spot along the creek in Old Bridge that has an all you can eat Pasta Dinner
Medieval Times
Is that still worth it if you don't drink? I've heard some people say they only enjoyed it cuz they were drunk.
See what is playing at whichever one of these is nearest to you. All are in date-restaurant-rich areas:
MPAC in Morristown
Count Basie Theater in Red Bank
Newton Theater in Newton
Papermill Playhouse in Millburn
>Hi all, so me and my bf are in our early 30s. So far from reading other posts, Ive got Top Golf, Go kart racing, and Comedy Club. We're not really interested in museums or gardens. I am also open to some good restaurants/cafes. Doesn't have to be expensive, can be any range. I would love to know where do you guys like to go or do? I know NY is close by, but that is being saved for another trip. Thank you in advance!
Sourland Mountain Preserve and Round Valley Reservoir, Nomad and Brick Farm Tavern, Bent Spoon and Princeton Record Exchange.
Sourlands is so underrated
I love sour land but that first little section is always filled with families and old people hiking up in like flip flops. Other than that it’s a great place. My dog loves the boulders.
Omg the Record Exchange used to be my jam!
Sounds like a great day
Love sourland
With it being summer, there’s always carnivals/fairs going on, outdoor mini golf, Laurita Winery. However it’s been pretty rainy lately so some indoor activities include escape rooms and Pinot’s palette to do a paint and sip!
• point pleasant is fun for jenks, aquarium, boardwalk games, mini golf
• asbury park is fun for live music. there’s a big grassy area outside where you can just listen to the music without actually going inside (i.e., a free way to do it)
• six flags has a safari if you’re into that
• princeton university has a lot of fun eating places & has a lot of cheap sports games in the fall/winter/spring
Best BBQ too in Asbury is Mutiny BBQ, but they sell out early. Mutiny on the beach is good too. In Brielle there's Due Amici for great Italian, in Toms River there's Brooklyn Bistro as well. Quick, fun NJ chain is Bubbakoos for great burritos. Those are all around the area.
Check out the sandbox at the seastreak - it’s fun for a beach day. Live bands, food trucks and great drinks.
yestercades!
Hi everyone,
I’m from England and I’ll be visiting my girlfriend who lives in New Brunswick next week. I only get to see her every few months so I try to make the most of the time I have and plan unique, romantic dates when I do visit. She is born and raised in NJ so planning dates/activities to that she hasn’t done already is not easy.
I was wondering if anyone has any suggestions on what I might be able to do at this time of year? I’ll be visiting from November 18-26.
I don’t mind having to drive, even if it’s to a neighbouring state, if the place/activity is good. So far I’ve planned to take her to the Luminocity Festival in New York City, but I don’t know what else to do.
Thank you, in advance, for your help :)
Grounds for Sculpture in Hamilton, NJ. Pick a day with decent weather.
Princeton University Museum.
Grounds for Sculpture is AWESOME! Definitely consider this. Close to NB and super unique and fun! :)
The museum is closed but Princeton University and the town itself are beautiful and worth experiencing on their own.
Princeton museum has been closed for a while, they're undergoing some pretty big renovations.
Yep, unfortunately they’re closed til 2024. New Brunswick has its own art museum though, the Zimmerli associated with Rutgers, though with a much less prolific collection
Agree with the Grounds for Sculpture they have something Called Night Forms that actually starts in the 25 its interactive light and sound instalations...cutting it close but if you can it's Def worth checking out
Was going to say this. Princeton in general is nice to visit and explore. Other great towns to visit would be Morristown, Jersey City, Hoboken, Ridgewood, Montclair. There are more I’m missing that are great.
Also riding bikes along the D&R Canal. You can rent in Frenchtown I believe. While your up there can check out Lambertville and New Hope PA. Very cool little towns on the river.
Lots of hiking in Northern NJ parks. Although less scenic now that the leaves have fallen, there are plenty of vistas to be hiked to.
If the weather is nice you could try Beneduce Vineyard in Pittstown, or Burnt Mills Cider in Badminster. Both make their own on site, have great outdoor areas, usually have music on the weekends and some kind of food offering.
Somerville, NJ is a cute town with a nice downtown. Lots of good places to eat!
And you can take her to the very spot where World War I ended!! It's on the Somerville traffic circle now, in a parking lot behind the Burger King. In 1921, it was an estate where they found President Warren Harding playing golf and got him to sign the final peace treaty ending the war with Germany. Not very romantic, but great for trivia night and would make a funny story for when you two get married (he took me behind the Burger King and showed me..... where WWI ended).
https://www.atlasobscura.com/places/the-spot-where-wwi-ended-bridgewater-new-jersey
I second this! Good restaurants, cute bakeries, and the arcade there is fun
Lots of hikes in north jersey. Monclair is a nice town too.
On the 25th and 26th an adorable Victorian town, Clinton, hosts "Dickens Days" where they have horse-drawn carriages and carolers drrssed in period clothing. The main street boutiques are decorated for the season. It is a beautiful part of the state and only 45 min away from NB.
https://www.visitclintonnj.com/events-1/2022/11/25/dickens-days
Pics of clinton:
When friends visit, they say it feels like a Hallmark movie.
In the future - there are lots of breweries and river towns like Lambertville in Hunterdon County as well, but Clinton is known for this particular weekend.
Hi everyone,
I’m from England and I’ll be visiting my girlfriend who lives in New Brunswick this week. I only get to see her every couple of months so I try to make the most of the time I have and plan unique, romantic dates when I do visit. She is born and raised in NJ so planning dates/activities to that she hasn’t done already is not exactly easy.
I was wondering if anyone has any suggestions on what I might be able to do at this time of year? I’ll be visiting from June 2-11.
I don’t mind having to drive, even if it’s to a neighbouring state, if the place/activity/event is good.
Thank you, in advance, for your help :)
There's a glass blowing place in Asbury, but it's by appointment only
I also recommend this - my wife and her sister did it and had a great time.
If she has lived in NB, consider going northwest to the Delaware Water Gap. Jim Thorpe, PA is gorgeous and fun to white water raft in.
If she hasn't been to Princeton, walk around and enjoy the architecture.
Atlantic City is fun if she is tired of the usual shore stuff.
Princeton and the Delaware & Raritan canal (kayak or canoe)... Jim Thorpe... Whitewater... Morristown for G Washington's respite from the damn Brits! 😁
I was just going to suggest Princeton! I love just walking around and enjoying the little shops there! There are also places to eat and drink around there so I def suggest this! And PA for white water rafting YES!!!
Now I feel like planning this for me lol
Peddlar's Village is a lovely trip, too. If they don't mind a bit of a drive, Winterthur and Longwood Gardens are in peak season right now.
I'd caution to make ticket and meal reservation, as it gets packed quickly.
Drive down to LBI and climb Old Barnaget lighthouse. Grab some lunch afterwards somewhere on the island and play mini golf.
Second this. Don’t even have to go as far as LBI you can hittup belmar area or seaside except there’s no lighthouse. Beach is always a good date idea
Twin Lights in Highlands would be closer to New Brunswick
Make it a shorter trip.. Bahres Restaurant at the base of Sandy Hook, and the Atlantic Highlands lighthouse (twin lights where Marconi made the first transatlantic broadcast).
/Halfwhite continues down the coast.. Asbury Park.. perhaps Stone Pony has a show of interest
Please enjoy the visit .. And welcome to NJ!
https://www.sixflags.com/greatadventure/attractions/giraffe-encounter-tour
The giraffe encounter at Great Adventure. $34.99 plus park admission.
This weekend is the Atlantic City Beer Festival, music and food too. There is also Smithville and Renault Winery to do in that area.
Kevin James is going to be at Count Basie... and there are loads of restaurants walkable (Red Bank).
Charlie Puth at PNC, Holmdel. (I don't know how old you guys are).
Sandy Hook for the day, dinner at Proving Ground or Bahrs... then a later drink at Chubby Pickle, or Seafarer. Always good bands and most within walking distance.
Look up some new breweries or distilleries that are near or far to you and do a tour!
Maybe go to the boardwalk if you haven't done that together? Coney Island?
White Water Rafting in the Poconos - Jim Thorpe area? Might be chilly though.
So my fiance and I live down by the Asbury Park area. We're both in our early 30's. Typically what we do every year for the past 8 years, is on our anniversary which is mid February, when it's just cold and miserable, we started this thing of finding a nice cozy airbnb for a weekend in a cool little town. Been doing this for 8 years now so obviously we've been to a good amount of places. As I search there's alot of places that just seem way too similar. It's a (no offense) not too much to offer town with 2 or 3 blocks of a couple places to eat. Not that this is bad thing, but I'm trying to expand slightly more
So here's what I'm looking for:
Sorry I know this is a long post I just need some help.
EDIT: places we've been to already:
-New Hope/Lambertville
Phoenixville PA
Myerstown PA
Philly
We were in San Diego for one but that irrelevant
Should also note that not only am I from Middlesex but we lived there for about two years so New Brunswick and all that jazz is off the table. I know alot of these are PA places but we rarely explore North Jersey
New Hope PA and across the river Lambertville NJ.
It's exactly what your looking for.
Echoing this. You'll love it. Bucks County Playhouse is right in NH. Music Mountain theater is on the Jersey side. Plenty of restaurants, very walkable streets with shops and there's always the tow paths if you want more nature-y walks.
Also look into Clinton and the northern part of Hunterdon. Similar vibe. The famous Red Mill by the waterfall being one.
There is nothing to do in clinton
Probably should have put in the original post all the places weve been. Did New Hope. However the last time we were there was February 2020...so I think it's time to go back lol. I believe we talked about doing another trip there.
Warwick NY has a bunch of B&Bs.
I second Warwick, cute farmy town with a charming little downtown surrounded by wineries. It has a good brewery and cidery too.
In upstate NY - Warwick, Cold Spring, Goshen, New Paltz, Woodstock, Rhinebeck. Also Beacon and Kingston if you want something busier
Rhineback sounds amazing and looks nice but that's almost 3 hours from us. Like I said we try to find something at an absolute MAX 2 hours away. One because we're just going for a weekend and Two, since it's February we don't know what the weather is going to be like. And once you start going to these upstate, hilly/farmy areas, if the snow is bad things can get a little dicey. We've learned that the hard way
Got it. Warwick is the closet since it borders NJ.
Not really known as destinations but quiet towns with cute downtowns - Hackettstown, Denville, Boonton Township, Sparta - all in NJ. Vernon NJ has a ski resort where you could snow tube (no experience required).
I love Rhinebeck, they have a nice walkable area with shops and restaurants. I’m unsure about a BnB, but I’ve stayed in the Rhinebeck Inn and the original part is lovely and quaint. I’ve been there over Christmas and in February and it is still lovely.
Also, the culinary institute is a short drive away, and they have several restaurants and a cafe with amazing food-reservations are necessary (except I believe at the cafe). Also, because of the CIA, there are a number of amazing small restaurants in the area.
Easton PA, foodie heaven, Great architecture, even has the State Theater for shows n concerts.
I just looked it up this looks EXACTLY what I'm looking for. Many thanks
Any suggestions for couples activities in jersey city/hoboken?
Cooking class at Hudson Table
Yup! Just Beware of being grouped with another couple (4 per group). Warning as it’s not everyone’s cup of tea to be social with others on dates lol
RT
Betty’s Ceramics Club
I started writing and then got deja vu.
There are two archery spots you can check out in JC. You can do a pottery class just don’t wear your Sunday best as it gets messy. You can do a cute field trip to Liberty Science Center. A painting class. RPM Raceway. So many fun activities!
New to Jersey from California! Most of the places I wanted to check out, like beaches, gardens, and Grounds for Sculpture, seem more suited for summer or spring. Do you guys have any recommendations for things to do in the winter?
Bowling, axe throwing, escape rooms, paint & sips, candle making, trivia nights at local bars.
I'd check out Metropolitan Museum of Art in NYC. Bowling. Arcade.
Movies and bowling.
How is “banging” not the number 1 answer? I imagined a tie between 1. Bang on the couch and 2. Bang in a tent.
Welcome! You will love it here. I write about free events prior to each weekend on my Facebook page: https://www.facebook.com/gardenstateglobetrotter/
I also write articles about places I like to go on my website: https://www.gardenstateglobetrotter.com/
What kinds of activities do you guys like?
This weekend there is a free bazaar in Asbury Park and on Valentine's Day there is a free concert in South Jersey: https://www.gardenstateglobetrotter.com/njevents/free-valentines-day
My husband and I recently had fun doing this: https://www.gardenstateglobetrotter.com/going-out/dine-and-paint-with-spotted-frog-art-studio
Not too familiar with good spots in new jersey, does anyone have any ideas or places that would be cute for a date? Anything helps, TY!
Lambertville, cute little town on the Delaware. Right across the river is New Hope Pennsylvania, another cute town with shops and restaurants. Right down Rt 32 in Pa is Bowmans Hill tower, with a 14 mile view, especially nice right now with foliage hitting it’s peak.
On a nice day, take a picnic lunch to Goat Hill Overlook in Lambertville! When we went, we got an assortment of apps and salads from Marhaba in Lambertville and a bottle of white wine, and just enjoyed the view!!
Lots of good responses, but have to second this one. Have fun!
Downtown Princeton- Walk around Palmer Square and the University
Princeton all the way. I recommend Kristine 's restaurant afterwards for a nice French meal
PJ's Pancake House and Princeton Record Exchange
Duke Farms! Beautiful walking trails, historic buildings, a massive orchid greenhouse, and a great cafe. If you haven’t been there, you have to check it out- it’s one of my favorite places in NJ. After you’ve spent a few hours there, you can head over to downtown Somerville which is just 2 minutes away and enjoy everything Somerville has to offer.
I second this! The walking trails and cafe are great.
Silver ball museum in asbury is fun, maybe not so good in the colder months since it’s on the boards. It’s a pinball museum, pay a cover, get to play all the machines in the place.
The beach is so wonderful in the winter! And the pinball museum is less crowded, it's a win-win
basically the only good thing in that area. other than bordentown which can make a nice outing as well .
I agree, I never had a bad experience there. But you can go to GFS and then go into Princeton. There are a lot of nice places to eat there. Check reviews to see what cuisine and price point suits you. I never had a bad meal at Meditera. But I haven't been there since the pandemic.
