TL;DR
Mizuno Running Shoes
Mizuno has a strong following among athletes, particularly for their Wave Rider and Neo Zen models. The Wave Rider is praised for its versatility, comfort, and durability, making it suitable for various types of runs from daily miles to marathons [2:3]. The Neo Zen is highlighted as an excellent daily trainer due to its lightweight design
[1:10]. Mizuno's upcoming Hyperwarp line is generating excitement, with comparisons being made to the Asics Metaspeed line
[1:6].
Saucony Running Shoes
Saucony's Kinvara and Ride series are highly regarded by runners for different purposes. The Kinvara is often used for tempo runs due to its light and responsive nature [5:1],
[5:5]. The Ride series is appreciated for easy and recovery runs, offering comfort and support over longer distances
[5:6]. The Triumph model is also mentioned as a fun shoe with great cushioning, although not particularly speedy
[5:2].
Brooks Running Shoes
Brooks offers several popular models such as the Ghost and Glycerin Max. The Ghost is recommended as a mid-range daily trainer suitable for various running needs [4:7]. The Glycerin Max provides more cushion, ideal for longer runs
[4:3]. Brooks shoes are noted for their comfort and durability, making them a reliable choice for many runners.
Nike Running Shoes
Nike's Pegasus series is frequently mentioned as a versatile option for daily training [4:7]. While some runners have experienced issues with blisters when switching to other brands like Hoka, Nike remains a staple in many athletes' shoe rotations
[3:9].
Considerations for Choosing Running Shoes
When selecting running shoes, it's important to consider the type of running you do—whether it's road, trail, or track—and your specific needs such as speed, distance, and comfort [4:1]. Visiting a running store for a gait analysis can help identify the best shoe for your mechanics and preferences
[4:5]. However, be cautious of marketing gimmicks and ensure you receive advice from knowledgeable staff
[4:9].
Seen a few comments on Instagram about Mizuno’s next top-end running shoe line, but this is the only image I’ve been able to find (see link below). As my post history indicates, I’m a big Mizuno fan, so looking forward to seeing what they’ve improved from the Rebellion line.
https://www.instagram.com/reel/DKZ6ww9MTZV/?utm_source=ig_web_copy_link&igsh=MzRlODBiNWFlZA==
This is allegedly the World Athletics shoe line Mizuno is testing:
Look a lot like Asics Metaspeed line. I’m excited, the Wave Rebellion Pro line’s geometry has always been a bit much for me and I’d prefer something more “normal”
The geometry of the first version was great for me. The second and third started wearing on my calves and achilles, so I only use them for speed work or races now. The Rebellion Pro Natural and Rebellion Pro Low are fantastic, however.
I have only run in the 2 and 3 but yeah, they’re fast but my ankles and stabilizing muscles around my lower calves take an absolute beating afterwards which limits how often I use them.
yeah trying them on (work at a running store) I immediately thought of the metaspeed line.
Lol my wife has some old Mizuno r2s in this color way and she got all excited when I showed her these.
Mizuno neo Cosmo is about to drop, it's basically a neo zen with a normal upper and slightly lower stack, looks like a banger daily
A rep came to the store I worked at, I got to try them on and run in them for a few minutes, they’re legit
Same, they were nice. Incredibly light.
I only tried the elite and pro tho, he didn’t have the pure with him
Hi all,
Started running back in October, having dabbled with it in my younger years. I've caught the running bug big time and am wanting to upgrade my kit.
So, back in the day I ran in the Mizuno Wave Rider 18's, which I love with all my heart and would buy 10 times over if they still made them. I've got a half marathon booked for September so am going to be putting in the miles during training and am very conscious that they won't last that long, I'm probably already running on borrowed time. I went for my gait analysis etc back in December and walked away with the New Balance 1080's.
I hate them.
Stuck with them in hopes I'd get used to the difference but I can't comfortably run over 5km in them and find they start to hurt my calves and my toes get pins and needles after 3km. Tried everything I can think of to make them work but I think I'm just going to cut my losses and sell them.
I'm looking at going back to Mizuno Wave Riders but they've obviously changed so much since I bought my trusty 18's I was just wondering if anyone has experience running in the 18's and the 27's / 28's and if they'd recommend?
TIA :)
I have run in mizuno for 14 years, I absolutely loved the shoe wave and rider , but I found they have changed so much in the last 2 years, the last 2 pairs i bought, I felt I was running in my slippers, I just don’t feel any support from the ground contact in them. I am going to switch to another shoe now.
I do! The 27/28s are among my favorite running shoes of all time. Just about perfect. Versatile, comfortable, durable, and a pleasure to run in. I’ve done everything from daily miles, to tempo runs, to full marathons in them, and they are stellar across the board.
I will say that they have evolved a good deal from the 18s, but generally for the better
Perfect, you've really put my mind at ease, was a tad nervous after forking out for the 1080's and not getting on with them. Thank you!
Not the OP but a fledgling Mizuno fan. So glad to hear that they are so versatile. I started with the Inspire but have recently obtained a pair of second hand Rider 27 which feel promising.
The Wave Rider really hasn’t changed much in the last 15 years aside from some updates in the upper and slight changes to the cushioning. People either love that shoe (and I mean LOVE) or it’s meh. I think Mizuno has correctly realized if that made a massive change to how the shoe rides they would have a revolt of there most hardcore fans on there hands, so they have kept the same firm, responsive and versatile feel the wave rider has always had. If you like the 18’s you will like the current model as well.
I’ve been a longtime runner but had to take time off last spring due to a foot fracture. Since starting up again I feel like a lot of my old go to brands have been slowly lowering their quality, but maintaining the same prices (ASICS, Hoka, Brooks). What is your favorite running shoe brand? What keywords should I look out for these days?
Note: I prefer shoes on the cushioned side with high arch support and primarily am on pavement/track/or finely milled gravel. (Not concerned about price, as I’m not trying to repeat my last injury!)
Back to back Mizuno Wave skys 3,4,5.. they are so comfy and durable, the outsole grip is superb and best in class, 1000km with each pair before retiring them, only downside is they are bit heavy and slow, so only use them for easy long runs, using Nike tempo next % for faster training runs, and alphafly for Races
Definitely loyal to NB - love my 1080s and Fuelcell RC elites, loved my Rebel V2s before they were retired…have tried ON, ASICS, Nike and kept going back to NB so now they’re all I buy.
Love my Rebels, love my 1080s. I tried to switch from NB to Hoka and blister city.
That's what I get for trying to be a cool kid, I guess 😂
1080s are a great shoe
Hoka’s Clifton series have been my favorite shoes. I’ve found that they size very narrow, so I buy wides (*only time in my life I’ve needed wides). Maybe their narrow fit contributes to blisters. Brooks are my #2, followed my ASICS.
I have tried a lot of shoes and none of them compare to my NB 880s. I’m loyal to NB now.
880s are they best running shoes I’ve owned!
I like Saucony best atm, mostly because the pair I happen to have fits me very well. Only know 3 brands, so take it with a grain of salt.
Saucony for me also. I had my gait assessed professionally years ago, and an earlier version of the Ride was recommended to me at that time. Have tried a couple of others through the years, but I always return to the Saucony Ride.
Saucony gang, have you tried Mizuno? I used Saucony for many years after testing out a bunch in the store, but I went to the store a few years ago and tried a bunch. The only ones that even felt decent where Saucony and Mizuno. What other brands feel good to you?
Kinvaras for racing. Been running for 20 years. 19 of them in asics. Still love them. They are my everyday trainer but man do I love Kinvara 11s and 12s on race day or long runs. Only discovered saucony recently but that shoe has changed my life. No more knee pain, faster times. Some people say you need to break them in, I’ve worn every pair out of the box. Only downside is their shorter lifespan.
Add me to the Mizuno list as well. Wave Inspires for the past 14 years, and they have become my running shoe, but also my everyday shoe.
I’m in the market for a new pair of running shoes and it feels like the options are endless cushioned, minimalist, carbon-plated, trail, road it’s overwhelming.
I’ve seen people swear by brands like Brooks, Hoka, Asics, Saucony, and Nike, but it seems like the best shoe really depends on the person and the type of running you do.
So I’m curious what’s your go-to running shoe, and why? Is it comfort, durability, or just that it feels right when you run?
Speedland. The price scares people but they are the most comfortable shoes I’ve ever worn and last more than twice as long as other high end shoes I’ve tried
I go back and forth between my Saucony Endorphin Speed and my Brooks Glycerin Max. I wear the Endoprhins for my faster paced runs which tend to be in the 2-4 miles range. And then I wear my Brooks when I am either going for a long run - 4+ miles - or if I am going for a longer run. The Brooks have more cushion but are heavier. The Endorphins feel like air to me. They are so light and nice.
Running store treadmill ‘assessments’ are mostly a marketing gimmick! Your best option is to choose a mid range daily trainer- every brand has one of these and they are quite similar.
Consider Brooks Ghost, Nike Pegasus, Saucony Guide, ASICS Nimbus.
I was recommended some insoles by one of those 'gimmicky assessments' and it changed my running game completely and elimitated several painful issues I was dealing with. They suggested some expensive shoes, but I found the insoles were the thing I really needed.
I would agree on the treadmill test but I think having them use the scanner on your feet at the running store is beneficial. I found out I was wearing the wrong size and it changed my life lol.
I never did the treadmill test but I liked having some knowledgeable people recommending the best daily shoe for my needs.
The issue is that often the people in the chain /big box running stores are sales people rather than runners. They don’t have any insight and are just saying whatever.
Sometimes there are people who are genuine runners and can offer you some good advice.
If you're not sure what shoe you want or need. Get to a running store, most will be able to asses the mechanics of your running form and recommend a shoe based of the data they record.
Once you know the types of shoe you need this will norrow down options somewhat.
Then it's a case of getting a shoe for your needs, daily runs, long runs, speed runs etc. Start simple though get a good all rounder and build from there.
This 100%. They can scan your feet watch your mechanics and recommend shoes based on that. I walked in looking at brooks or hokas but left with asics. They didn’t even bring hokas out for me to try on
Well it definitely depends.
What kind of running are you doing?
20 mile road runs?
Trail runs?
Tread mill runs?
Short/fast track runs?
5Ks? Marathons?
Race day? Trainers?
😂😂
2023 is almost coming to an end, and we've gotten many wonderful shoe drops this past year; whether it be ASICS, Adidas, Nike or Saucony! of all the amazing releases this past year up till now, what are you favourite go-to daily trainers that you love? for me, it has to be the new gel Kayano which stability and cushion gives me much comfort and enjoyment when running with this shoe. comment down and let me know what your favourite daily running trainers of 2023!
my triumph 20s. i wasn’t sure how the 10 mm drop was going to be but i honestly don’t think about it. such a fun shoe. great cushion. it’s not super speedy but as a recreational runner it works for what i need it to when it comes to work outs.
They're great, did most training miles for the NYC marathon on them.
I just picked up a 2nd pair even though I only have 300km on my first pair. They were on sale for $80 off, and I want them as backup.
Also I discovered a half-size up is even better than my regular size in these. And I got the "Vizipro" colorway when I usually just go for black.
I ’m considering buying Triumphs for easy and recovery runs. Other shoes in current rotation: Saucony Guide and Kinvara Pro. I’m using the Guides for everything except speed/workouts.
Unfortunately the 20s are out of stock everywhere. The 21s are 180-190 euros, which seems a lot for a non-plated daily trainer. Are they worth it? Or would you look somewhere else for that price?
Going to guess I might be the only one with this answer but Kinvara 13 for tempo and Saucony Ride 15 for the easy slow miles.
I’m getting back into running after a long hiatus and once I prove to myself that I’m truly sticking with it, I’ll buy more exciting shoes for daily trainers!
Sacony ride for me too. If my knees are feeling OK I do about 10 miles a day. It is slow Moderate pace. It is a nice easy run
That's exactly me. Kinvera for tempo and Rides for long and recovery runs. 🤝
Sounds like we just became running potnahs. Let me know which shoe we’re buying next! 😄
I loved the Kinvara 13.
I thoroughly enjoy the Kinvara 13! It's a super light and quiet shoe - someone else here had described it as ninja running.
Puma Velocity Nitro 2
Nick from the run testers…is that you?
Tryna get fit, and still flex a little. Looking at the Nike React Elements and the Rivaderchi, 'cause I like going on some trails, but I'm open to all suggestions! Thanks!
i’ve been running in Zoom pegasus for a couple months now. no complaints. nice, light, comfortable
HAHA I'm just looking at those now, they might be it, thanks!
is there a Nike store near you? if so, their service is incredible for picking/fitting running shoes. might be worth a swing by
Waterproof ones are excellent if you live in a shitty weather place like Virginia
Do you live in the US?
Check out running warehouse.., their return policy is the best in case you don’t like the shoes. I’m a runner, have done marathons, half’s and a couple of ultras.
Finding the right shoe was a mission. Nike in my experience aren’t the best. Check out Saucony and Newton’s. Also take into account if you’re a neutral runner or if you heel strike all that stuff.
Thanks I'll check that out! *Cheers with coffee mug*
Zoom Pegasus, or maybe an asic.
ASICS* it's an acronym.
r/iamverysmart
Nike element react are not maid for running try
nike epic react
Ultraboost
Nike pegasus 35 turbo
To name a few
Pegasus Turbos, or Brooks. Be sure to get what is best for your gait, and level of pronation though.
First time bumili ng expensive shoes na solely for races and breaking PBs. Anyone tried adizero adios pro 4? Medj excited na ibreak in hihi
Please don't use it just for race days. Recipe for injury yun hahaha. You should be using your "race day" shoe for race specific workouts. Like goal pace simulation long run workouts for example. Dapat sanay ka to run on your race day shoe.
Yes to this. Incorporate your race day shoes in your training block para masanay and magfit in paa mo sa shoes. Sabi nga, nothing new on race day.
(Minus mo na lang yung fact na super saya gamitin pro 4 to the point na ayaw ko na gamitin other trainers ko 😅)
Ohhh. Thank you si tips guys! 😇

Hi! What’s a good choice of running shoes that’s great for daily and race day? My only running shoes are the Nike Air Winflo 9’s and I’m planning to upgrade. I have my first 10km race day soon 😺
Someone recommended you Hokas, so I feel I should counter by recommending barefoot style shoes. I run in Xeros.
But seriously, it does depend on your personal preference.
I find by keeping my feet strong and not allowing cushion and a drop interfere with my natural pronation, I have less foot and leg pain and better balance. There are a lot of people on the barefoot shoe subs who have fixed foot and leg issues by slowly getting rid of the drop and cushions.
However, some people probably actually do better with shoes like Hokas and don't have any trouble. You have to find what works for you.
I always try and get Asics on sale, got a pair for $75

The ones that fit your feet and running style. Go to a local running store, have your gait analyzed, try on a bunch of shoes and invest in the ones that feel the best.
I did this! Was the best thing I decided to do! Also got a 90 day return if I wasn’t happy - but so far so good, went with the Brooks Glycerin 22
And once you find the ones that work stick religiously to them.
Until they change the model so much that they don’t feel good. Which is the worst!
Are those shoes working for you? Are you running comfortable and pain-free? Then stick with them.
If not, feel free to go shoe shopping. But for the love of the running gods - remember - NOTHING NEW ON RACE DAY!!!!
Yes!! Nothing new on race day!! Still have time to train though!! Thank you!
Couldn't fit all the brands. Altra, Brooks, etc.
Also which is your favorite pair that you own?
Been a Nike guy forever, but I‘m very much leaning towards Saucony right now, their models these last few years have been amazing to me.
In terms of global sales of running shoes, Adidas is #2 in the world and Brooks is #3. Following behind them are On Running #4, Hoka #5, Salomon #6, and Inov-8 at #7. Surprising (to me, at least), Decathalon's Kalenji is #8. Topo at #9 and Altra at #10. I was very surprised to learn neither Saucony or ASICS aren't in the Top 10. Nor is New Balance. If only North America were considered, all three of those brands would likely bump three of the others.
What's your source on this? Zero chance Topo or inov8 are ahead of asics
My source for that comment was: Consumer Market Insights, Global Running Shoe Market 2023. The statistics are in a subscription-only report. When all global sneaker sales (not just running shoes) are considered, ASICS jumps up to #5 behind Nike, Adidas, Skechers, and Puma per this public and linkable report from Statista. It would not surprise me if ASICS were #1 in Japan and perhaps several other Asian markets. My personal opinion is that in terms of running shoe innovation, ASICS is in the Top 3. What surprises me the most is that Saucony and New Balance don't rank in either list despite the strong popularity of both brands in North America, the largest global running shoe market.
Right?! ASICS are by far one of the most popular brands where I live, if not #1. This list sounds off.
Puma
Puma
Of the ones listed, only Saucony and Asics have a competitive model in every category (plated tempo, race day, max cush neutral, plate-less all-rounder, stability). For 2023 it is a hard choice between these two.
I personally like Nike and Under Armour ones, but I would like to know which shoes you recommend?
Fourth it here- I wear ASICS and others just to switch up now and again, but Brooks are consistently the best for me.
I wear Altra Lone Peak running shoes. I like them because they were cheap, zero drop and cushioned. I had some Merrell zero drop running shoes before, but the sole was so thin the bottom of my feet would kill me.
I've done Altra Superior 3.5 and 4. Both great but less cushioning. Now I am running Timp 2 and they are just fantastic out of the box. Might need to look at Lone Peak for prices
Lone peaks are my go to trail shoe. Altra escalate 1.5 or 2.5 for road work. They hold up well and my shin pain has gone away since changing to them.
Saucony Kinvara have been my one and only for close to a decade.
GT-2000's are by far the best shoe I've ever used. Even the Kayano can't hold a torch to them.
I always end up coming back to Asics after I try other brands.
Asics GT-1000 for me. I have had this shoe or something similar for five years, and they fit the same and wear out (gel padding and traction) about the same.
I second Asics
Asics are the top for me.
Mine too. Brooks are great; get them online?
Currently wearing my GT-2000s while warming up!
