Best Seafood Restaurants in Busan

TL;DR

  • Jagalchi Fish Market for a true Busan experience, though it can be touristy and overpriced [1:2], [2:4]
  • Millak Fish Center by Gwangali for fresh seafood with panoramic views [3:1], [3:2]
  • 풍원장 꼬막정찬 마린시티점 for a feast of shellfish dishes [1:1]

Jagalchi Fish Market

Jagalchi Fish Market is one of the most recommended places for seafood in Busan. It's famous for allowing you to pick from the day's catch, haggle on prices, and then have your selection cooked upstairs [1:2]. However, some locals caution that it caters heavily to tourists, which might result in higher prices and less authentic experiences [2:4], [3:2].

Millak Fish Center

Millak Fish Center is another popular choice, located near Gwangali Beach. It offers stunning panoramic views and a variety of seafood options. The set menu is highly praised for its taste and variety, including unique banchan (side dishes) and live octopus [3:1]. While some believe it to be overpriced, others appreciate the quality and the views [3:12].

풍원장 꼬막정찬 마린시티점

For a more local dining experience, 풍원장 꼬막정찬 마린시티점 is recommended for its delicious shellfish dishes like 꼬막무침 (seasoned cockles) and rice dishes [1:1]. This restaurant provides a hearty meal with numerous side dishes, making it a feast for seafood lovers.

Gijang Crab Market

If you're a fan of crab, the Gijang Crab Market is worth visiting. It's known for offering various types of crab at reasonable prices [5:1]. This market provides a more specialized experience for crab enthusiasts compared to general fish markets.

Unique Experiences

For those looking for unique seafood experiences, visiting outdoor seafood markets near Haedong Yonggungsa Temple can offer a chance to try fresh raw seafood, including live octopus [3:6]. These markets are frequented by locals, providing an authentic taste of Busan's seafood culture without the usual tourist crowds.

Budget Considerations

Seafood prices in Busan can vary significantly depending on the type and location. For example, a plate of sashimi can cost around 30,000 won, but prices fluctuate based on seasonality and demand [2:3]. It's advisable to inquire about prices beforehand, especially at markets where haggling is common.

ORIGINAL POST

Hi, I just landed in busan today as a solo traveller. Will be here for 3 days. Is there any recommendations for where I can find nice seafood since busan is famous for it?

I arranged a dinner at Chef Gon. Hope it's good.

I always recommend Jagalchi Market.

You get to pick from the day's catch, haggle on prices, and then go upstairs where they cook and serve your food that you just picked out. It is a true Busan experience!! Freshest seafood in the city!!

Awesome! What’s your opinion of the place?

One great place is 풍원장 꼬막정찬 마린시티점. The two main dishes are 꼬막무침 and the dish with the rice (which I prefer). Both are KRW 22,000 (USD $15.70) tax included. It's a veritable feast with lots of delicious side dishes.

After that, a visit to the cafe at the Park Hyatt Busan will give you one of the prettiest sunset/evening views of Gwangan Bridge. It's only a little less than the amazing meal for a single drink, but it's well worth it for people who are traveling - unless you're a hobo troubadour scraping up 1,000 won bills to get to your next destination. There's also Dongbaek island and Haeundae Beach within walking distance.

Seafood recommendations in Busan

Posted by memorypops · in r/korea · 6 years ago

Hi everyone, I'll be visiting Busan this October and would like to know any recommendations for seafood dishes. I'm open to trying anything! What are the must-try seafood in Busan? And what can I expect to pay for that dish? I really love crab, so what would the average price be for a fresh crab (not king crab)? Thank you so much!

A good place to go if you like crab is the Gijang Crab Market. Info on how to get there. Also for seafood in Busan I would suggest going to Jagalchi Fish Market down in the Nampo-dong area. Plenty of seafood suggestions here.

My favourite seafood dishes in Busan would have to be 꼼장어 Hagfish, 낙곱새 Octopus, Intestine and Shrimp stew (if you interested go to 원조 조방낙지 next to Dongnae Station) and fresh sashimi at Millak Waterside Park in Gwangalli Beach (there is a seafood market there which you can choose what seafood you want, then they fillet it and you eat it while overlooking Gwangalli Beach - very popular spot).

If you want more information about anything I have said feel free to PM me.

Thank you so much for the recs!! I'll definitely check these places out. I'm more concerned that I'll spend too much money on food (because I want to try everything) so if you have any info on budget or the cost of food, I'd really appreciate it!

Like, how much would a typical dish be for a sashimi dish? (I know there's a lot of different types, but what kind of sashimi would be most expensive?)

A plate like this costs about 30,000 won. Generally I ask for 광어 Flounder, 우럭 Rockfish and/or 전어회 Herring (if in season). They will sometimes give you free side foods like 산낙지 Raw Octopus and/or 멍게 Sea Squirts (super-salty).

A lot of people will recommend Jagalchi Fish Market but it’s overpriced and caters to tourists. So, if you want to pay those tourist prices for food made for people who aren’t expected to be repeat costumers, by all means check it out.

As for a quality restaurant, there’s a great Daegu-tong restaurant on the far side of Haeundae beach. (Cod fish soup). A lot of celebrities have frequented that place.

The price constantly fluctuates so I can't help you with that. You will likely see king crab, fur crab, snow crab, hanasaki crab and flying crabs. They are all good.

I'm a big fan of 꼬막 구이 (grilled cockles). They'll bring you out plates of shellfish, some with sauces/ seasoning added, that you grill yourself like at a 고기집. You can find a place worth going to in pretty much any neighborhood near the coast in Busan.

Busan Seafood Recommendations

Visiting Busan for the first time next month. Need some recommendations for seafood restaurants, ideally by the seaside but anywhere else is fine. I also need feedback on the Jagalchi Market - is it worth going? Any particular stalls to go to (to avoid being scammed / over charged)? thanks! 😀

Visit jagalchi just for the experience but avoid eating there as it is extremely overpriced. Go to Millak fish center by Gwangali, hands down, best place to get your fresh seafood from

To be honest I think Millak is also overpriced. There are some smaller 회 restaurants in the neighborhood with much more reasonable prices. The views from Millak 회 Center are great though

I do love a good view!! By the way, do you know if Millak fish Center sells cooked seafood? My dad can’t eat raw foods so if we do go, it’ll have to be a place that can do both raw (for me) + cooked food (for dad) !!

I second Millak - after some research I went to this one: https://naver.me/GwIScYMy Panoramic views of the beach and the 35k set menu (the cheapest one) was just never ending and very very tasty. Big plus for some less than common banchan and also it was an opportunity to try the “live” octopus (the last ended up grilling it for us after we each braved one bite). It was a mix of cold, raw and cooked and warm stuff, which we really enjoyed.

Thank you for this! I might give this a try since it’s not too far from my accommodation. Do you know if they do cooked seafood as well? My dad can’t eat raw stuff 🥲

I can’t remember the name exactly, but near this temple:

[Naver Map] Haedong Yonggungsa Temple 부산 기장군 기장읍 용궁길 86 해동용궁사 https://naver.me/FAQXhhz7

There is a outdoor seafood market in tents right by the water, it serves tonnes of fresh raw seafood if you are into that. Live octopus and all that stuff, you can try a load of things you’ve never tried before in a unique way. Might be worth looking up. I’ll try find the name after I finish work if you want to check it out. Really unique experience, full of Koreans and 0 tourists, if it wasn’t for my girlfriend I’d have never found it!

They did like muscles or something cooked in a soup that came with the platter we got but everything else was raw unfortunately!

Looking for vegetarian friendly seafood restaurant

Posted by ChoiceAwkward7793 · in r/busan · 1 year ago

Before you guys bash me, I know, it's ridiculous looking for vegetarian options in a seafood restaurant but I'm gonna try anyway.

I am traveling to Busan / Jeju with my elderly parents for the first time and they are vegetarians for most of their lives. I cannot leave them alone while I feast on seafood (language barrier), so it will be good if I could get the best of both worlds while we dine together, especially since I have heard great things about Busan's seafood.

I just came back from Seoul and I could find a few vegetarian options in a marinated crab restaurant (e.g. kimchi pancake/seaweed fried rice etc). So I'm hoping I could do the same in Busan.

Please help and any advice is appreciated! TIA!

Not really the answer you're looking for, but I haven't found any luck (as a vegetarian) with this scenario. If a place has yachaejeon, awesome, but most of the time I'm SOL (please note that kimchi pancakes often have meat in them). You might want to have a place nearby where you can get your parents a veg meal (here's a place near jagalchi: 부산 중구 광복로55번길 14-1 https://naver.me/5D3Ilk2r ) and then go and feast on seafood. Good luck!

Most food in korea has fish sauce or other ingredients derived from fish/seafood. Are those off the table or do you just not like eating fish itself?

Gotcha so yeah there is plenty of non fish-based food. But you will still have lots of seasonings, sauces and stuff derived from fish products.

You wouldn't be able to avoid those ingredients very easily but it sounds like thats not a major problem.

Some of the non-fish based foods that are super famous in Busan include:

  1. 국밥 (gukbap) - a hot pork soup with rice in it
  2. 족발 (jeokbal) - pigs feet, sounds a bit strange but honestly it's just like a nice plate of ham
  3. 밀면 (milmyeon) - a cold noodles dish typically found in the summer. If you are here in other seasons this could be a bit hard to find so I reccomend it's warm counterpart 칼국수 (kalguksu)

Great fresh seafood / sashimi restaurant in Busan?

Posted by aestheticsofuse · in r/koreatravel · 1 year ago

I'm with my elderly relative who really wants to eat sashimi, basically, but we went to Jagalchi Market and were a bit turned off by the pushy atmosphere - I also saw a thread saying Jagalchi is really aimed toward tourists and locals don't really go there. So where DO the locals go in Busan for fresh delicious sashimi (not sure what it's called Korean) that's reasonably priced? I've tried to search but just keep seeing Jagalchi mentioned - we'd love more of a typical sit-down restaurant vibe. We're staying in the Jagalchi area but will be visiting Seomyeon and maybe Songdo tomorrow, so we're open to anywhere near those areas!

The Korean word for sliced raw fish is 생선회 (sangseon-hoe, pronounced like "hweh"), if you plug that into Naver Maps it'll give you what's nearby you. I don't have any personal recommendations but searching in Seomyeon these ones look good and have good reviews:

[Naver Map] Lucky Sanghoe 부산 부산진구 중앙대로680번가길 75-1 https://naver.me/xi5BnSYn

[Naver Map] Daerim Tuna 부산 부산진구 서면로 48-1 https://naver.me/x4iwddCi

You can also get Japanese style sashimi platters at izakayas or sushi places. Search "사시미", "스시" or "초밥"

I just realized I never replied to this post, because I saw it in the morning as we were scrambling to get out the door for the day – but I was able to pull up your post when we were in Seomyeon and copy 생선회 into Naver Maps to find great sashimi! It wasn't either of the ones you linked, but it was delicious...wish I had thought to note the name (rookie mistake). Anyway, huge thanks from me and my relative, who was absolutely thrilled with the meal!

[Local Recs] What I showed my friends on a quick 1-night trip to Busan

Posted by Swimming-Turnip395 · in r/busan · 3 months ago

🇰🇷 Hi!! I’m Korean, and recently had friends visiting from Jeju, so I gave them a quick 1-night, 2-day tour of Busan. It turned out great, so I wanted to share our itinerary in case anyone’s planning something similar!

AND… we were 5 people, not gonna lie, food was a major part of the trip — so if you’re into eating well while sightseeing, this is for you! Also, we had a car, so we got around by driving.

☀️ Saturday

💭 Arrive at Gimhae International Airport

💭 Lunch in Seomyeon

📍 Lee Jae Mo Pizza Seomyeon Branch (link)

→ Korean-style cheese pizza! Highly recommend ordering the kimchi fried rice on the side. Honestly, the portions are huge. We were stuffed after just 2 slices each.
→ You need to put your name down for the waitlist in advance!! (use the “CatchTable” app – it’s popular in Korea for restaurant bookings!)

💭 Coffee in Jeonpo Café Street

→ Super crowded on weekends, so you might not get into your first-choice café. But since all the cafés are packed in one area, you can just hop into any place with available seats!

Some good options to try (get on the waitlist early if you can):

  • 📍 Den Bar (link)→ We ended up going here. Loved the vibe, but the coffee didn’t really hit the mark — also available on the CatchTable app!
  • 📍 Month Coffee Bar (link)
  • 📍 Bunker (link)

💭 Coastal walk at Igidae

📍 Igidae Coastal Walk (link)

→ Super scenic and not too intense — a great way to enjoy Busan’s ocean vibes!

💭 Head to Haeundae

→ Hotel check-in + rest + get on the waitlist for dinner at:

📍 Haeseong Makchang (LCT Branch) (link)

→ Makchang here refers to grilled beef intestines. It’s super flavorful and chewy, but definitely an acquired taste. Some Koreans avoid it too, so it might be a bit intense if you’re not used to it — better to know before you go! 😅

💭 Dinner at Haeseong Makchang (LCT branch)

💭 Walk by the Haeundae beach, take some photos

💭 Drinks nearby (round 2!)

📍 Clam Haeundae (link)

→ Not the most mind-blowing food, but the ocean view and outdoor tables make up for it. Great place to enjoy a beer by the sea!

☀️ Sunday

💭 Wake up + Check out

💭 Morning coffee in Haeundae

📍 Momos Coffee Marine City Branch (link)

→ Beautiful spot, great coffee! My favorite place in Busan. And don’t skip the cheese terrine — it’s a must with a hot coffee. ☕🧀

💭 Lunch at Gwangalli

📍 Dongmyeonshik Milmyeon (link)

→ Milmyeon is Busan’s take on cold noodles — super refreshing and loved by locals!

💭 Walk along Gwangalli beach, take some more photos

💭 Head back to Jeju . . ✈️

++ Extra Tip!!

If you’re traveling in Korea, Naver Maps is a must. It’s way more accurate than Google Maps here, and it shows tons of local restaurants and user reviews that you won’t find elsewhere.

Also, Koreans really hate waiting in line, so we use waitlist apps all the time. The two most popular ones are CatchTable and Tabling — both are used for booking at trendy or busy spots. I’m honestly not sure if they work without a Korean phone number (especially for foreigners), but I thought I’d mention them anyway just in case!

And not every restaurant is listed on CatchTable or Tabling, but it’s still a good idea to check the apps before you go.

Places to eat at seomyeun

Posted by Austin854 · in r/busan · 1 month ago

I'm going to Busan with my friends. I've been to Busan a lot because my mother's family lives there but never really went out because I don't have friends there. Now I'm going with my friends at the end of this month and I don't really know good places to eat and drink(alcohol). Any recommendations for restaurants will be great especially kbbq, sashimi, and local foods as well. My friends and I booked hotels at seomyeun. Thank you in advance.

Jeju Rooftop is amazing! It’s a bbq place that has some other options like marinated crab. Small place but the food is incredible and the service fantastic.

Beer Shop in Jeonpo (one station south) has the best beer selection in the city. Lots of Korean craft.

I have my favorite KBBQ in Seomyeon. I just discovered it recently, and I love it.

There is another one. it's a buffet set kind of restaurant where you can also do KBBQ. For this, you have to be there in the late afternoon since due to the long waiting line, you might wait for some time or even miss the best side dishes.

Hope this helps.

Chakhan is a massive nationwide chain that uses frozen meat. Do not go.

best seafood restaurants in Busan

Key Considerations for Seafood Restaurants in Busan:

  1. Freshness: Look for restaurants that source their seafood locally, as Busan is known for its fresh catches from the surrounding waters.

  2. Variety of Dishes: Consider places that offer a wide range of seafood options, including sashimi, grilled fish, and traditional Korean seafood dishes.

  3. Ambiance and Location: Some restaurants offer stunning views of the ocean or are located near popular attractions, enhancing your dining experience.

  4. Local Recommendations: Check reviews from locals or food bloggers to find hidden gems that may not be as well-known to tourists.

  5. Price Range: Be aware of your budget, as seafood can vary significantly in price depending on the type and preparation.

Top Recommendations:

  1. Jagalchi Market: A must-visit for seafood lovers, this bustling market allows you to choose fresh seafood and have it prepared on-site at one of the many restaurants.

  2. The Fisherman’s Wharf: Known for its variety of seafood dishes, including grilled fish and sashimi, this restaurant offers a great dining experience with a view of the harbor.

  3. Suminine: Famous for its fresh sashimi and seafood stews, this restaurant is popular among locals and offers a cozy atmosphere.

  4. Gukje Market: While not exclusively seafood, this market has numerous stalls and eateries serving delicious seafood dishes, making it a great spot for a casual meal.

  5. Haeundae Beach Restaurants: Many beachfront restaurants offer fresh seafood with a view, perfect for enjoying a meal after a day at the beach.

Tip: Always check for daily specials or seasonal catches, as these can offer the best flavors and value.
