TL;DR The 1990s saw several iconic video games that became best-sellers, including "Super Mario World," "Pokémon Red/Blue/Green," and "Tetris."
Iconic Titles from the 90s
Several titles from the 1990s are considered classics and were among the best-selling games of the decade. "Ocarina of Time" is often mentioned as a standout game from the late 90s due to its groundbreaking gameplay and storytelling [3:1]. Sales Data Insights
While specific sales data from the discussions was not comprehensive, it's widely acknowledged that games like "Super Mario Land" performed exceptionally well in terms of units sold during the early part of the decade [5:2]. "Pokémon Red/Blue/Green" also achieved significant commercial success, contributing to the Pokémon franchise's long-term popularity.
Legacy of Tetris
"Tetris" deserves special mention as it continued to sell millions of copies throughout the 90s. Although some comments suggest outdated data, Tetris's legacy as a top-selling game persists due to its simple yet addictive gameplay [4:2].
Cultural Impact
The cultural impact of these games cannot be understated. Many of these titles set the stage for future gaming innovations and established franchises that continue to thrive today. The enduring popularity of these games highlights their significance in shaping the gaming landscape of the 90s and beyond.

Sorry, I don't support this post type (rich:video) right now. Feel free to check back in the future!
I was trying out this bot thing, didn’t work
I was working at gamestop for the San Andreas release to this day the longest line I've ever seen snaking around the building and then down the block.
Also what the fuck minecraft.
Sonic the Hedgehog
Mario game /. Snake ladder
OG Rollercoaster tycoon. All made by one guy.
Ocarina Of Time. Late 90's in its fullest glory.
So only talking about units sold..not revenue being generated per month?
Revenue generated per month will be highest for Pay to win sort of games and free to play games
I don't think the chart data is right. Tetris has sold 500 million copies and more.
Data is definitely old. GTA V crossed 200 million units in November 2024.
Isn't PUBG Battlegrounds free? Or was it paid earlier?
Minecraft is goated man its a timeless game sales will only increase from hereon.
Then you should play terraria
It's 2D right I have heard people making fun of it So never tried it.
This chart is fake or outdated.
yeah rdr2 hit 70m units and gta v hit 210m last quarter
Also Witcher 3 hit 50 million sales long ago and human fall flat also sold over 50m copies before it went free.
I bought Minecraft for like 9 inr on Android. If that's included then of course it's the best-selling game of all time.
Though I think would still be there because of low hardware requirements and availability on every platform combined with the fact that it's a good game.
And java version is heaven for modding which is also big factor in popularity of this game
Worst chart design ever
It's interesting to see how well Super Mario Land was doing at first.
Jesus, Minecraft comes in like a freight train and demolishes everything.
can you please check out my latest video https://youtu.be/vjQK3Mj7RFg and sub if you want
Data is a bit outdated. Updated info at link below shows GTA V surpassed Tetris for #2 spot. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_best-selling_video_games?wprov=sfla1
Like Oregon Trail being rereleased since 71 is all the same game tho...
The concept of Tetris sold enough for it to be higher on this list...only including the game of version is crap
The concept of an Italian plumber jumping on enemies has also sold hundreds of millions of copies so add Super Mario Bros too then
Curious where Tetris would stand if you included all the versions together?
At over 500M, as according to the other page about the best selling franchises and series:https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_best-selling_video_game_franchises
Seems like this list was loosely put together and needs work. Skyrim sold over 60 mil too..Oregon Trails a o.k. to include all tho..IFK looks like this list was made by weirdos
Wonder what other games they are omiting special and enhanced editions for while including all GTA and Minecraft versions
Where is the Skyrim?
Right how in the world is human fall flat on here but game that's had how many releases and is still a top played game not on this list?
Skyrim is a bit lower at 40M, it's better explained in the page but at some point the director claimed 60M during some interview but never made any official announcement on the company's site or social media since it was likely wrong
It used to be a popular game back in the 2010s, then it took an arrow in the knee.
Never have I expected Human: Fall Flat to beat so many major titles.
Never heard of it before this list
It is the ultimate funny casual game
The problem with Tetris is every version on every platform is combined as one game, yet every other game the totals are separate. The Sims and The Sims 2 are separate totals, while NES Tetris and Wii Tetris are the somehow added together.
"Tetris" is more like "Tetris Franchise" and if we actually consider franchise totals, Tetris disappears from the top list.
I saw someone comment on this elsewhere and supposedly, this is only the ORIGINAL game albeit on other platforms. (so not Tetris 2 or Tetris 3D)
I was more surprised to not see any MMORPGs on there. Even though WoW had many expansions, you always had to get the core game. I'm surprised that at its peak of 12m subscribers in a single month, that it didn't have over 35m unique purchases from 2004 until now. Maybe this list excluded subscription based games even if it required the player to buy the game first? According to the Wiki, it says that over 100m accounts have been created...
Bu-but wHeRes ForTNite?
2:32 the cancer begins.
Babbage’s.. it had a great variety of quality console and PC games.
I remember the day my already nostalgia-ridden teenage self rolled up into Babbage’s and discovered Return to Zork bundled together with the Zork Anthology of text games I’d loved as a kid. Maybe the greatest day of my gaming life up to that point.
God I miss those giant boxes for pc games. They came with a bunch of books and flyers and other glorious dork gear. I don’t miss installing 5 cds though.
Toys r us! Something about getting that little paper to take to the register.
I completely forgot about that process. That was awesome.
it was so great, I can still remember the smell when you walked into Toys R Us. Plus they had the systems all set up so you can play them in the store even if you weren't getting a game
Same! I still have most of the games I bought from there. To this day, I still wonder what happened to the friend that introduced me to them.
Great selection but DAMN were they overpriced. I remember my dad paid like $90 for StarFox there.
I had completely forgotten about FuncoLand. Deep memory unlocked there.
Jeeeez no kidding. I had completely forgotten they existed and I used to go there a LOT. Got my first PlayStation there.
Software Etc.
Consoles, PC, and cool gadgets...
Love hate with them. I loved the selection but hated the buy-back amount they offered people.
What’s the difference between the two GTA Vs?
The games on the list are Vice City and San Andreas, not part of the numbered series.
GTA V and IV use the same logo for some reason. Creator is probably not a gamer.
Just go to www.google.com
Who bought Frogger and Lemmings? I thought Frogger was mostly on arcade, and I've barely heard of Lemmings.
Lemmings was a big deal at one point. But yeah I have no idea what Frogger is about there. I am assuming that it's jacked. No Donkey Kong. No Pac-Man. No Dragon Warrior. Everyone had Dragon Warrior because Nintendo Power did a deal where you got the game free for a years subscription. And it was a good magazine that made the other kids envious. The only way I ever got my mom to pay for the subscription was "Free game comes with it for less that what the game costs."
Ah, you were obviously an enterprising child. I think having a subscription to Nintendo Power was pretty much a sign that you were a rich kid. It was like the precursor to wearing designer clothes.
All this tells me is that Tetris is a monster
It was a monster in 2004 in the 4th Quarter.
This is poorly done. It has Super Mario World selling in 1989 when even in Japan it didn't hit until the end of 1990. Uses the Wii Fit U logo for Wii Fit. GTA V logo for both IV & V. And colour me skeptical about Duck Hunt continuing to sell like that through the 2000s.
Also, "Lammings?" Really?
Plus, no Pac Man? Are you kidding me?
Please I want link to your Visualization so that I can learn from your perfect Job thanks
This was probably one of the most shittiest types of videos i’ve ever seen. You clearly just tried to jump on the bandwagon with a minimalistic approach and seeing how you respond to criticism in the comments here i think i know enough
Not counting Wii Sports for obvious reasons, MK8/D is technically the 5th best selling game!
I’m more shocked that PUBG is number four
PUBG mobile is very commonly played in countries like India
Isn’t that free to play though? Otherwise Fortnite would be on this list.
The orginal PC release was huge and cost like 30 USD a pop.
It’s a pack-in for the Wii.
It is the most popular game of the 3rd most selling console. And it’s the best game in its series (defenitely in quantity, and without Bcp also quality wise)
nah man, its a hella good game, with a extremely wide appeal range - those sell like hotcakes
It got bundled with at least 85% of Wiis out there, so I'd honestly disqualify it by virtue of pretty much having high sales numbers just because it was bundled with so many Wiis....
Here's a full list of Wii bundles with Wii Sports in them (gonna use North American bundles as an example):
White RVL 001 with Wii Sports, the red RVL 001 bundle, the white and black RVL 001 bundles with Wii Sports/Resort (and MotionPlus), the other black and white Wii bundle with the two games but a Wii Remote Plus, the black RVL 101 bundle with the two games combined on one disc.
Here's what didn't get Wii Sports: RVL 001 2011 Mario Kart Wii bundles, RVL 101 Just Dance 2011 black Wii bundle, RVL 101 New Super Mario Brothers black Wii bundle, 2011 Black Friday blue Wii, Skylanders Blue Wii bundle, 2012 Just Dance 4 white RVL 101 Wii, all Wii minis
The bundles that didn't come with Wii Sports made up a small portion of Wiis sold and a fair number of them are harder to come by, so the Wii Sports sales are pretty much artificially boosted because it was a bundled game in most cases
Sorry for weird formatting and if the bundle lists are hard to read, on mobile right now
I’m more surprised pubg is 5, but no. Everybody and their grandmas dog has this game. I even bought it twice
DD and Wii didn't even look good in their time LOL. Mario Kart had always felt a little worse-looking than its peers on the same console - even other 4p games with a lot going on. MK8 was the first game that actually impressed me with how it looked, instead of just being Fine.
....what responder?? This is based on reported sales numbers from the companies making the games. They report accurate sales figures at investor meetings. This isn't based on some poll💀
