Ninja Turtles and X-Men!
Was going to say exactly the same. Whenever I've been to a place with arcade games in recent years, X-Men and TMNT are almost always my first go-to's.
Damn I knew I forgot a ton, you are right on both of those!
The only correct answer!
Street Fighter, TMNT, Tekken
Tekken.
Killer Instinct my fav.
C-c-c-combo breaker!!!
Spider Stompin'
Addams Family Generator
Tower of Power
Marvel vs. Capcom
Nicktoons Racing
My local arcades were Sportsworld (Route 17, Paramus, NJ), Chuck E. Cheese (Route 4, Paramus, NJ), The Purple Room/Fun & Games (Willowbrook Mall, Wayne, NJ), Dave & Buster's (Palisades Center, West Nyack, NY), Jeepers! (Palisades Center, West Nyack, NY), Fiends (Palisades Center, West Nyack, NY), Fun City Arcade (Palisades Center, West Nyack, NY), and an arcade at Paramus Park (Paramus, NJ.)
I’m a teen if the 90’s and no matter if it was the mall, movie theatre or putt putt golf I always had to get on the arcades. I had a few favorites but what was your go to arcade even if it’s not listed?
TMNT
To this day buying the 1up ninja turtle arcade machine has been my best adult purchase.
That game was addicting, had to have ur quarters ready for that one
An arcade opened up near me a few years ago and it was still a single quarter. (All games were).
My son and I beat TMNT for about $10.
Simpsons arcade game took about the same.
(Sadly, they’ve moved to a gamecard system now, which works out to like 75-80 cents a credit.)
As fun as the original was Turtles in Time was way better.
Raiden or Area 51
Raiden was a fun arcade game.
NBA Jam for sure. Boom shakalaka!
You win 😂
From what I've seen, the late 80s and early 90s has seen the release of all-time classic video games. Particularly in the arcade industry. Which do you think were the best arcade games to come out during this period?
Here's some picks of mine in no particular order:
As for how where I think the years this era spans, I'd say from 1987 to 1992.
Here's a few I remember, in no particular order:
Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles / Turtles in Time
Roadblasters
Chase HQ (and its sequel)
Outrun (and its sequel)
Double Dragon / Double Dragon 2
Ghouls & Ghosts
WWF Superstars / WWF WrestleFest
Altered Beast
Golden Axe
Final Fight
Narc
Arch Rivals (predecessor to NBA Jam)
Terminator 2
Super Offroad
Smash TV
X-Men
The Simpsons
Michael Jackson's Moonwalker (yes, really)
Sunset Riders
Dragon's Lair II: Time Warp
Asterix
Lethal Enforcers
Missing Robocop and Splatterhouse
I'm missing a lot of games. I can't say that I ever played those on the arcade, but I've played the console ports. I remember Splatterhouse being a big deal at one point.
You got two that first came to my mind. Double Dragon & Golden Axe.
Honorable mention to Super Sprint and Pac Man.
I was trying to keep my list to the years they asked for, but Super Sprint and Pac-Man are definite goats.
That Moonwalker arcade game was dope. I remember it released back when Pepsi was giving out their "License to Chill" cards in malls. Pepsi had card swipers on that Moonwalker cabinets, so if you had one of these cards you could use it to play the game for free.
The Simpsons arcade game is a classic.
This is the one, when I was a kid the arcade left it on free credits once and my brother and I beat it because of that. That took a lot of continues and no way would we could have afforded to beat it otherwise. The game just starts over after you win so we just passed it on.
Going by OPs date range of 1987-1992, Rampage (1986) and Gauntlet (1985) don't qualify.
But to heck with OPs date range, those are great games!
I'll add:
Black Tiger (1987)
Rolling Thunder (1987)
Gain Ground (1988)
Vindicators (1988)
Cadash (1991)
Ikari warriors
I loved Black Tiger, particularly the slight RPG elements like collecting Zenny and buying weapon upgrades.
NBA Jam
Was Dig Dug a very popular game in the arcade in the old days? If you played it when you were very young, did you have a lot of fun with Dig Dug?
So many quarters into this game. And it was one of the more popular ones at the arcades I went to.
Wasn't popular at the 2 arcades near me at all, I loved it. That an Pooyan I had top spots. Didn't get top on qbert either.
Yes!!! Dig Dug, Centipede, and Q-Bert were the 3 arcade games that were my favorite! Q-Bert & Dig Dug were harder to find (They weren’t at my roller rink unfortunately, but Centipede was) and they weren’t as popular as most other games.
Dig Dug and Q-Bert were my favorites.
I heard Qbert when I read this. Remember the rave/techno/whatever we called it then song from 91ish that used the game sound?
What song is that?
It was very popular and I loved it. It's actually at a local arcade/pinball hall and I pop over and play it every couple of weeks.
I can HEAR the soundtrack and sounds lol. I wonder if there's an emulator out there for it?
I can hear the sound effects and the music as well! It’s one of the reasons why I loved this game so much!
I loved this game but was horrible at it and didn’t have enough money to “get good” at it. But I always played it whenever I went to the local pizza parlor (which had a ton of video games!) along with Centipede!
When my kid was little and I was trying not to curse I’d say “Dig Dug”. It became a thing at our house.
I love it! 😆🥰
Asteroids was my game. My record was turning it 14x on 1 quarter
PAC man
Donkey Kong
Pong
NBA Jam
X-Men
Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles
This is the correct list and I'm the correct order.
Jam is so fun still! Ewing!
Robotron
Gyruss
Tron
Nice list! Thanks for all of the lists!!!
The Simpsons
2-in-1 Galaga/Ms. Pac-Man
Street Fighter 2 Turbo
Bonus: 1941 Battle of Midway.
Were you able to play this in the arcade long ago?
Were there any long lines of players waiting to play Dig Dug when you were young?
Is Dig Dug an arcade favorite of yours?
I miss this game
Those were the days ❤️
yes, yes it is.
This and Mr. Do! I would try to dig the entire board.
I'm looking for somewhere in tbay that has older arcade machines. Trying to avoid wackys.
The only older stuff you'll find is probably pinball machines. The entire arcade scene died when Ron died.
You'd be better off to just download Retroarch or Retrobat and grab some MAME dumps.
Raiden. I don’t know where to play it, but that was my favourite in the 90’s.
Around 2001, the college actually had a Raiden machine tucked away in a little corner. It’s long gone now, but I bet it found a new home in Thunder Bay somewhere.
It used to be in the Study in the early 90’s. That was the machine that got me hooked on it.
There were other variations that showed up at silver city and other places…. Modern takes in the game. But they never quite had the feel of the first.
Tilted turret has some pinball machines
The bar next to On the Links has a couple... Free too.
Dawson Trail Craft Brewery. I put so much time into Defender at their original location...
If I remember correctly Dawson Trail has a few pinball and a few arcade games.
The arcade ones are free. Last time I was there it was a few sports themed arcade games plus Centipede. Believe the bartender told me they get them from Tilted Turret. Not sure what they have at Tilted Turret; haven't been there in a couple years and I think it was primarily pinball there.
Groggy Toad coffee shop (which is no longer in business) had a couple arcade machines that had a whole ton of games on them. Not sure what happened with the machines - if the current tenants of the building have them, the owners took them with them, or they ended up somewhere else.
All things considered, it was actually a really cool game. There were a lot of crappy licensed games during the 90s and this stands out as one of the better ones.
Great game. Went to a classic arcade convention recently and they had a Moonwalker machine. Played it for a few hours.
Still think the Genesis version is better though.
I played the first level (vid) hard to get into
I have a copy of it for the genesis sitting on my MJ shelf

John D. recently posted this on the Iconic Arcade Facebook group, and it's generating some interesting disucssion. He's overtly soliciting feedback on our favorite arcade titles, so let's tell him in the comments what Iconic Arcade might want to consider focusing on next!
Per John D:
There’s been some lively debates regarding favorite eras of arcade. But we need to establish the eras to start the conversation.
Here is the official eras of arcade gaming:
I grew up during the Golden Era, so that’s where a big part of my nostalgia comes from. I was brought back to the arcades starting with SF2, which sparked the revival era of the 90’s.
At Arcade1UP, sales of 80’s games outside of Pac Man sold significantly less than games of the Revival Era. IMO, the revival era games hold up better than the Golden Era games, but that’s a controversial opinion. (I love me some Robotron, Mr and Ms Pac Man, Galaga, Missle Command, Double Dragon, Dragons Lair and Star Wars)
Will Iconic Arcade focus on just 90’s and 2000 games? Heck no, but at least our chipset can handle these titles with ease.
Also, look at the lists of bangers from the revival era. 90% of these games have huge sales potential.
What was your favorite era?
Here’s mine, which were the years I went to college:
1990
1991
1992
1993
1994
1995
I am not too picky. I do prefer 90s titles though. I really just want an Xtreme cab for each company. Essentially a Capcom cab which is coming, a Midway cab (MK 1-4, NBA Jam, Crusin USA); Konami Cab (Turtles, Sunset Riders, Xmen, Simpsons, Bucky O hare); Sega Cab ( HOTD2, Golden Axe, Daytona etc); Namco, NEO Geo and so on. If you can buy additional licensed game packs for each company on that specific cab like the SF cab is expected to do, it would be awesome. Most of the 2000 and later arcades i played were typically light gun or racing games, those might be harder to pull off. I don’t play a ton of 80s arcade games, but do have a Pac Man XL which is fun. I would consider replacing it if Iconic came out with a version of their own. I think Double Dragon is their next cab, I hated Double Dragon on NES and won’t be picking up that cab. Data East games were weak and dated in my opinion. I would prefer having 3-4 quality Iconic XLT Cabs where i can add games instead of 20-30 A1up cabs
Revival era, for the most part. I do enjoy playing staples from the other eras, but there’s no question that the graphics and programming took a giant step forward in the late 80’s to 90’s.
1990s easily.
90's
Didn't you post something similar to this in the Arcade1Up sub recently?
The breakpoints feel a bit odd, but i voted "decline and recovery" in that poll. But i'd argue the late "recovery" is really tied into the "revival" phase. As the popularity of many late 80s games, and hence revival of arcades in general, were directly responsible to SF2 WW being imported at all.
The earlier period had some great games, many which havent aged well, but ideas were being formed, and so a game quickly got replaced with something "better". There's still things like Bosconian which feel like an older era game, with it's design maybe influencing Sinistar etc.
Later games started to feel very samey, safe, and just (minimal) iterations. I'm not surprised it has the most votes, and would be interested to see each vote option filtered by age (ie: did someone vote for the 3rd one, who wasnt even born in the 70s/80s). Graphically obviously the best, hardware had improved.
But the middle section has stuff which is very playable now: Ghost and Goblins, Elevator Action, R-Type, TMNT, Final Fight. If one could sneak SF2:WW in there, i'd happily ignore the revival era.
Really to give feedback to Iconic arcade, i'd say keeping a variety of games on a single unit is better than theming it entirely around one franchise / type of game (ie: only street fighter).
I'd be far more interested in cross-company games in one unit: give me Taito, Capcom, Atari, Namco all for more variety.
Showing here the arcade flyer of the classic game Dig Dug. I never had the chance to play it in the local arcade. My first time playing it was on console.
How young were you when you first play Dig Dug in the local arcade?
Ooomeef day habla
Aiyaiyai
