Best Settings for Xbox One on a 4K TV

TL;DR

  • Set your Xbox to output at 4K resolution.
  • Enable Game Mode on your TV to reduce input lag.
  • Adjust TV settings like contrast, white balance, and sharpness.

Xbox Resolution Settings

For optimal performance on a 4K TV, set your Xbox console to output at 4K resolution. This ensures that the console is utilizing the full capabilities of your TV's native resolution [1:2], [3:1]. However, if games appear blurry, it may be due to the upscaling process or specific game settings like motion blur [3:3], [3:5].

TV Mode and Picture Settings

Switch your TV to Game Mode to minimize input lag and disable unnecessary post-processing features [1:1], [2:2]. This setting is crucial as it allows the console to handle upscaling without interference from the TV's processing technology. Additionally, adjusting settings such as contrast, white balance, and sharpness can improve image quality [1:1], [5:3].

Troubleshooting Blurry Images

If you experience blurriness when playing games, verify that your TV is receiving a 4K signal. Some TVs have an Info button that displays current resolution settings [3:2]. Resetting picture settings and running the Xbox Calibration tool can also help optimize display quality [3:2]. Be mindful of TV settings related to motion, as they can contribute to perceived blurriness [3:2].

Additional Considerations

While setting the console to 4K is generally recommended, some users find that certain games look better at 1080p due to how their TV handles upscaling [3:3]. Experimenting with these settings based on personal preference and specific game requirements might be necessary. Additionally, ensure your Xbox model supports 4K output, as older models like the Xbox One S primarily run games at lower resolutions [2:1], [2:3].

I have a 4k tv- what resolution output should I set the console/do I need to enable anything in the tv settings as well?

You should set your TV to game mode and disable any additional post processing, it will only increase input lag and worsen image quality... let the console handle the upscaling. The only thing you should tweak on TV is contrast, white balance and maybe sharpness to your liking.

Which Xbox do you have? Did you change the picture setting to Game Mode? This should be under Settings, External Devices, Game Mode. This setting disables the picture processing technology to minimize input lag and should make it less blurry.

Well that's your problem right there. The One S only plays games at 1080p, some are even 720p or 900p.

Those 1080p games are being upscaled (stretched) across many more pixels to fit the 4k screen, so they will look blurry.

You need a One X that puts out higher resolutions with a stronger GPU.

xbox one x 4k settings.

I'm wondering if I should leave the resolution on the 1080p setting with allow 4k off when I'm playing games that apparently can hit native 4k for my tv. I have a samsung mu7000. usually when I switch the resolution to 4k; some games look slightly blurry as opposed to leaving it on the 1080p setting for some games. I don't know if it might by that my tv might just auto upscale what's on it when I leave it on the 1080p setting.

When on 4K (resolution set to 4K, allow 4K on), does your TV report that it's receiving a 4K signal? Some TVs have an Info button that will tell you.

Try resetting the picture settings on the TV, then running the Calibration tool on the Xbox. Follow the instructions very carefully, and it will guide you through setting up your TV for the best picture quality. Your TV may have an ISF/Expert mode, that may need to be enabled to access all the settings.

Some TV settings that could cause blurriness are anything related to motion (clear motion, smooth motion, true motion, anything like that), dynamic anything (contrast, color), edge enhance, upscaling, smoothing, sharpening, booster - generally, if your TV says it improves picture quality, turn it off. Chances are, it has a ton of side effects.

Gaming mode for lag free play.

Otherwise I recommend PC mode, neutral gamma (this sets the blacks blacker), tone (or warmth) set to the coolest level and scale (4x3, 16x9 etc) set to automatic.

This is one of the best things about modern tvs and old systems. You can really extract a lot from your xbox by fiddling with the image settings.

I haven't had any issues with weird artifacting or color reproduction and found its a joy to play on. Most 4K tv's do a pretty solid job at doing some up-scaling from the 1080 signal.

If you think Skate 3 could look better on your 4k TV then try this!!

Posted by JfiveD · in r/skate3 · 7 months ago

This may be common knowledge but it was a game changer for me. I have an Xbox series X but plan to test on my Xbox One S when I get back.

Go to Xbox settings > General Video Fidelity & Overscan

Use the drop down box where it says Display and switch it to HDMI. Then change Color Space to PC RGB and it may pop up a message but do it anyways. It still looks better even if you keep “Color Space” to Standard but try RGB

Then go back General TV and Display options and you should see an option for Resolution. Change that to 1440p or the highest you have I guess…and put the refresh rate where you want.

I literally can’t believe how incredible Skate 3 now looks on my tv.

Xbox Series X Display Settings & Bandwidth Testing: SHOCKING RESULTS - What is yours?

Posted by NamZIX8 · in r/XboxSupport · 5 months ago

I've been testing Xbox Series X display settings extensively to get the best possible picture quality on my Hisense 65U8K TV. After watching tons of YouTube videos and reading various articles/posts, I wanted to determine how to maximize the Xbox's 40Gbps HDMI 2.1 bandwidth and avoid unnecessary compression.

Xbox Series X HDMI & Bandwidth Limits

The Xbox Series X supports HDMI 2.1, but it caps bandwidth at 40Gbps (instead of the full 48Gbps that some TVs and cables support). This limitation affects the maximum output bandwidth that can be achieved.

My Goal

I wanted my Xbox to fully utilize the 40Gbps bandwidth and achieve the following outputs:

  • 4K 60Hz - 8-bit RGB (YUV 4:4:4) → 28.46 Gbps
  • 4K 60Hz - 10-bit HDR10 (YUV 4:4:4) → 35.64 Gbps
  • 4K 60Hz - 12-bit Dolby Vision (YUV 4:2:2) → 38.69 Gbps

Since Dolby Vision forces YUV 4:2:2, this format naturally fits within the Xbox's 40Gbps limit.

My TV & Xbox Settings used for Testing:

TV Settings (Hisense 65U8K)

  • Game Mode: Auto
  • VRR: Enabled
  • HDMI Port 4: Enhanced 144/240Hz (unlocks full 48Gbps bandwidth)
  • Cable: Certified HDMI 2.1 (48Gbps rated)

Xbox "General TV & Display Options"

  • Resolution: 4K UHD
  • Refresh Rate: 60Hz

Xbox "Video Fidelity & Overscan" (Left at Default - Affects Dashboard Only)

  • Overrides: Auto-Detect (Recommended)
  • Color Depth: 24 bits per pixel (8-bit)
  • Color Space: Standard (Recommended)

Xbox "Video Modes" Settings

  • Allow 50Hz: Enabled
  • Allow 24Hz: Enabled
  • Allow Auto Low-Latency Mode: Enabled
  • Variable Refresh Rate: Always On
  • Allow YCC 4:2:2: Disabled (Initially)
  • Allow 4K: Enabled
  • Allow HDR10: Enabled
  • Auto HDR: Disabled
  • Allow Dolby Vision: Enabled
  • Dolby Vision for Gaming: Enabled

Test Results (Default "Allow YCC 4:2:2" Disabled)

  • ✅ 4K 60Hz - 8-bit RGB (YUV 4:4:4) worked as expected (28.46 Gbps).
  • ❌ 4K 60Hz - 10-bit HDR10 (YUV 4:4:4) DID NOT WORK – Xbox defaulted to YUV 4:2:0 (11.88 Gbps).
  • ✅ 4K 60Hz - 12-bit Dolby Vision (YUV 4:2:2) worked fine at 38.69 Gbps.

I expected HDR10 to use YUV 4:4:4 because bandwidth was available, but Xbox defaulted to YUV 4:2:0 instead.

Why Does Xbox Default HDR10 to YUV 4:2:0?

After digging deeper, I found out that:

  • Xbox prioritizes compatibility across TVs and defaults HDR10 to YUV 4:2:0 to fit within HDMI 2.0’s 18Gbps limit.
  • This ensures more TVs can display HDR10, even on HDMI 2.0 connections.
  • Xbox does NOT force HDR10 to use YUV 4:4:4, even if HDMI 2.1 (40Gbps) is available.

Essentially, the Xbox prioritizes compatibility over maximizing bandwidth unless overridden.

Testing "Allow YCC 4:2:2" to Improve HDR10

Most online sources suggest disabling "Allow YCC 4:2:2" because it downgrades YUV 4:4:4 to YUV 4:2:2.

However, I wanted to see if enabling it would actually improve HDR10, given that my setup supports 40Gbps bandwidth.

After enabling "Allow YCC 4:2:2," I got the following results:

  • ✅ 4K 60Hz - 8-bit RGB (YUV 4:4:4) remained unchanged at 28.46 Gbps.
  • ✅ 4K 60Hz - 12-bit HDR10 (YUV 4:2:2) NOW WORKED at 38.69 Gbps (instead of YUV 4:2:0 at 11.88 Gbps).
  • ✅ 4K 60Hz - 12-bit Dolby Vision (YUV 4:2:2) remained at 38.69 Gbps.

Final Conclusion & Best Settings for RGB, HDR10 and Dolby Vision

  • Enabling "Allow YCC 4:2:2" IMPROVED HDR10 by upgrading it from YUV 4:2:0 to YUV 4:2:2.
  • My Xbox and TV negotiated HDR10 at 12-bit YUV 4:2:2 instead of 10-bit YUV 4:2:0, giving better color quality.
  • 8-bit RGB (YUV 4:4:4) did NOT downgrade to YUV 4:2:2, despite common advice suggesting otherwise.

Community Question: Can Anyone Achieve HDR10 YUV 4:4:4?

So far, the best I could get for HDR10 was 4K 60Hz - 12-bit YUV 4:2:2.

Has anyone successfully forced Xbox Series X to output 4K 60Hz - 10-bit HDR10 (YUV 4:4:4)?
If so, what TV model and settings did you use?

This is happening because when you set XSX too 60Hz system level - XSX switches too HDMI 2.0 TMDS 18Gbps bandwidth.

XSX set too 120hz system level will switch XSX too FRL5 - 4L10 = 40Gbps (HDMI 2.1 MODE)

Leave the XSX on 120hz system level for FRL5 HDMI 2.1

*The XSX does not work the same way as PS5/PRO, which always uses FRL4 4L8 = 32Gbps (In both 60hz & 120hz mode)

*Some times the PS5/PRO will incorrectly HDMI handshake with display and "current video output" will force YUV422 TMDS HDMI 2.0...The correct PS5/PRO HDMI handshake "current video output" should report RGB(HDR) - which equals FRL4 - 4L8 32Gbps

*Microsoft HDMI EDID SYNC (COMPATIBILITY)

  • System level 60Hz - HDMI 2.0 TMDS 18Gbps - for people who want the the NEW console but still have (HDMI 2.0 DISPLAY)
  • System level 120Hz - HDMI 2.1 FRL5 40Gbps - (4L10 40Gbps ALWAYS) For people who have NEW console &( HDMI 2.1 DISPLAY)

*PS5/PRO HDMI EDID SYNC (HIGHEST AVAILABLE DYNAMIC RANGE)

  • System level 60Hz/120Hz both output FRL4 4L8 32Gbps IF HDMI EDID SYNC recognizes HDMI 2.1 Display "correctly" & the display is not an older HDMI 2.0 Display

**IF NOT BOOT - UP can revert too TMDS HDMI 2.0 YUV422 - in 4k@60Hz Dashboard UI "Current Video Output"

**BOOT - UP for (HDMI 2.1 Display/FRL4 4L8 32Gbps) in 4k@60Hz Dashboard UI "Current Video Output" = RGB(HDR)

[EDIT]

  • Distinction between DISPLAY TYPES is important as well. -HDMI 2.1 (TELEVISION) - Internally Factory Calibrated too RGB - Video/YCC(YUV)4:2:0-4:4:4 - [Limited Range] - (16 - 235/255 SDR & 64 - 940/1023 HDR10)

-HDMI 2.1 (PC MONITOR) - Internally Factory Calibrated too RGB - DATA/4:4:4 - [FULL RANGE] - (0 - 255 SDR & 0 - 1023 HDR10)

Through further testing, I discovered that when Dolby Vision and Dolby Vision for Gaming are enabled in the Xbox settings, HDR10 games do not run in HDR10 mode. Instead, the Xbox forces 12-bit Dolby Vision (YUV 4:2:2), even if the game itself does not natively support Dolby Vision.

This means the Xbox automatically converts HDR10 content into Dolby Vision, applying its tone mapping and processing, rather than allowing the game to display in its original HDR10 format.

To force a game to run in HDR10 instead of Dolby Vision, you must disable Dolby Vision for Gaming in the Xbox settings.

I’ll be doing further testing to compare both formats and determine which one delivers the best overall experience for gaming.

Should I force 720p Xbox output instead of 1080p for a 4k TV?

Posted by raver01 · in r/xbox360 · 8 months ago

Hi, first of all I know many 360 games are either 720p or lower. I've been playing 360 in a 1080p tv setting the 360 output to 1080p, this makes the Xbox to upscale the image to tv resolution but 720 to 1080p doesn't scale perfectly. Now I'm getting a 4k OLED and I'm wondering whether is better to output at 720p and let the tv scale evenly on a 3x3 pixel grid so I can get a crispier image.

Honestly I my experience, yes. Most games on the system render at 720p, and the system just tries to scale the output to 1080p. Modern TV's scale 720p really well, so you may as well leave the native resolution

After reading the comments about 720p better scaling then 1080p I had to try it out. I set the HDTV setting from 1080p to 720p and tried it out with GTA IV. The image might be different. It is somewhat more pixelated but more crisp, whereas 1080p appears to be less pixelated but not as crisp. Might be imagining this thou as I am looking at a 50 inch Hisens 4K TV, 2 meters away.

you need to take into account the upscaling from 720p native game resolution to 1080p which doesn't scale perfectly. Then the tv upscale these minor error x4

Game internal resolutions differ, but you're right, they're about 720p roughly internally.

I have a 4K LG CX OLED. I can tell you that it makes the most sense to use the TVs much more modern upscaler. Something I do want to point out is the horrible 30fps jitter you will experience with this combination. OLED and 30fps don’t look great, add to that the lack of consistency in frame rate on Xbox 360 games and you have one heck of a headache. I personally use an older 1080p 32” LCD. I wish you luck! Hopefully the jitter doesn’t bother you!

Best 4K Settings for Xbox One X

Posted by fkjlafjlfj · in r/xboxone · 6 years ago

Settings on Xbox One X:

  1. I changed 8 bit to 10 bit
  2. Checked "variable refresh rate".
  3. Left "YCC 4:2:2:" unchecked.

For my monitor (LG 27UK-600):

  1. I only have 4 HDR settings to choose from (Vivd/Standard/Game/Cinema) I'm using HDR Standard

  2. For aspect ratio, I'm using "Original" instead of "Full Wide". (I can't see the difference between the two)

Are these the best settings to optimize my experience? Please help and thank you.

  1. Revert back to 8-bit.

The Xbox automatically switches from 8-bit to 10/12-bit when the source is in that color range. Otherwise, SDR content is in 8-bit color.

Everything else you did is fine.

Some TVs are 10 bit and support 10-bit through the xbox but by default xbox sets them to 8-bit. So it's best to check what's supported through the xbox one calibration. If it says 10-bit color depth is supported, make sure it is set to 10-bit and not 8-bit.

Yes, they have 10-bit panels and support it, but that does not mean the content displayed is 10-bit. Like I said, the Xbox automatically switches.

Best settings for Xbox One on a 4K TV

Key Considerations for Xbox One Settings on a 4K TV:

  1. Resolution Settings:

    • Ensure your Xbox One is set to output at 4K resolution. Go to Settings > General > TV & display options and select 4K UHD if your TV supports it.
  2. Color Depth:

    • Set the color depth to 10-bit if your TV supports it. This can enhance color accuracy and depth. You can find this under Settings > General > TV & display options > Color depth.
  3. Refresh Rate:

    • If your TV supports it, set the refresh rate to 60Hz for smoother gameplay. This can be adjusted in the same TV & display options menu.
  4. HDR Settings:

    • Enable HDR (High Dynamic Range) if your TV supports it. Go to Settings > General > TV & display options > Video modes and check the box for Allow HDR.
  5. Calibrate Display:

    • Use the Calibrate TV feature in the Xbox settings to optimize your display settings for brightness, contrast, and color accuracy. This can be found under Settings > General > TV & display options > Calibrate TV.
  6. Game Mode on TV:

    • Enable Game Mode on your TV to reduce input lag and improve responsiveness during gameplay. This setting is usually found in the TV's picture settings.

Recommendation:

  • Make sure to use a high-quality HDMI cable (HDMI 2.0 or higher) to ensure optimal performance and support for 4K and HDR.
  • Regularly check for firmware updates for both your Xbox and your TV to ensure you have the latest features and improvements.

By following these settings, you can maximize your gaming experience on your 4K TV with the Xbox One.
