When it comes to choosing the best skateboard, there are several factors to consider including personal preference, durability, and specific components like decks, trucks, and wheels. Here's a comprehensive look at some of the top recommendations from various discussions.
Decks
The choice of deck is often a matter of personal preference and skating style. Powell Peralta's Flight Decks and Santa Cruz VX are frequently recommended for their durability [3:3],
[5:2]. Other popular brands include Magenta, Real, and Hockey/FA, which have solid reputations and are worth trying
[5:1],
[5:2]. Some users also recommend Baker and Deathwish for their strength and reliability
[3:1].
Trucks
For trucks, Thunder and Independent (Indy) are among the most recommended brands due to their widespread popularity and performance [1:11],
[4:0]. Tensor trucks are noted for being lightweight, which can be an advantage depending on your style
[1:7].
Wheels
Ricta Clouds are highly praised for cruising and transportation, especially on rough terrain [1:2],
[1:3]. For regular street skating, Spitfire Formula Fours (F4) are a popular choice due to their durability and performance
[1:5].
Bearings
Swiss bearings are often recommended for their high quality, although some suggest that beginners might not need such high-end options initially [1:4].
Complete Set-Ups vs. Custom Builds
While complete set-ups are convenient for beginners, many experienced skaters prefer to build custom boards by selecting individual parts that suit their preferences and needs. This approach allows for more customization in terms of deck shape, truck height, and wheel hardness [1:10].
General Advice
It's important to support local skate shops when possible, as they often carry quality products and offer valuable advice [3:2]. Additionally, some users emphasize that most legitimate brands will provide satisfactory performance, so personal preference and budget should guide your final decision
[3:4],
[1:8].
In conclusion, while there are many excellent skateboard brands and products available, the best choice depends on your specific needs, style, and budget. Consider trying out different components and supporting local businesses to find the perfect setup for you.
What board brands are considered some of the best or worth the money paid for them if you're buying a complete set-up?
Or are there any notable brands to look out for as far as accessories go like wheels, trucks, decks, etc.?
At this point I know to avoid Walmart boards or Retrospec, but if you could ride a dream board what brand would you choose?
It's all personal preference. No one buys completes except for brand new skaters. Generally, its Ace or Indy, Bones or Spitfire and whatever brand decks you like. The advanced level here is not by brand but by shape/woodshop.
Ricta Clouds wheels are by far the best wheels (in my opinion) - Thunder trucks and actually CCS trucks are surprisingly good too
I agree, refuse to skate any other wheels when I am skating as a means of transportation. The 78a wheels are unbelievable on crusty terrain.
Clouds are great for cruising or filming but for regular skating they’re kinda ass lol. Can’t go wrong with F4 Spits
I might age myself here but -
I always liked Element or Girl. Featherlights were fun. Most decks will generally feel the same, though. Get something that's wide enough for your feet, but thin enough that you can still flip. I'm a size 10 and usually stuck with 7.75" decks. Ask the guy behind the counter to let you see the board and stand on it.
Trucks - Tensor, super light lows. Bearings - Swiss, but probably not a big issue here. If you pay more for really nice bearings, you might not like them/be ready for them yet. Wheels - Ricta
I was gonna mention tensor trucks and hardware if you want lighter gear!
Yall newbies focus waaaay too much on these things.
If you didn't buy it from walmart and it's 7ply (idr all the types) or more, with a concave, its 99% going to service you just fine.
Buy the brand you like/think is cool/cheap/whatever. I used to buy a lot of Girl, Almost, Baker, etc. and then started supporting my local shop buying their decks. Nowadays i just buy the cheapest shop deck my local sells, otherwise i get the cheapest blanks and sticker job the fuck out of it every time.
This. My old neighbor owned a skate shop and I'd get random sample decks from time to time from companies I couldn't name if I wanted to. They all did the job. One day on a rail and they're indistinguishable anyway.
I’ve found you can find boards on sale for cheaper than my local skate shop sells shit, even their blanks. Their blanks are $50.
You can get a mini logo for like $30, and I’ve found flips, primitives, reals, powells, and other known brands for less than the blanks my shop sells.
I wouldn't buy a complete. I'd buy the parts you want then assemble it.
For context I’m 33 have a skateboarding background. My 5 year old son into skateboarding so he’s got me back into it. Right now just skating a baker board, Indy trucks blank wheels with reds. I like to cruise the park but I also like grinding ledges and hitting rails. Flat rails or bank rails. Things of that nature. Not into flip tricks much can kick flip and 3flip was never my jam I sucked. Looking for a wider board I can cruise but also hit a ledge or stair rail. So many options these days. Was looking at heroine skateboards or polar or welcome.
Creature(never had a Santa Cruz but they’re basically sister companies) have been my go to for the past 10 years, especially love their VX boards.
Anything BBS, so baker, heroin, sci fi, etc. just find out which companies are running BBS wood and choose from there.
I can only speak for Heroin as I love my 8.5 symmetrical Heroin deck. It's been a great deck, especially getting back into skateboarding. I couldn't ask for a better deck.
LOVE THIS DECK… also glows in the dark 🤘
Yeah, man, it's been really good to me, and I recommend it to anyone.
I love shaped santa cruz decks
Idk but I want a flight deck I think the new Andy Anderson one just to say I had one.
I’ve always been obsessed with Alien Workshop boards cause I loved Rob Dyrdek but that was back in 2013/2014. I’ve been thinking of DGK but a lot of people say it’s mediocre. What are some good skate decks, mainly looking for durability since I’m still learning.
Hockey decks are good , same with Baker but they are on the expensive size of decks . Most decks function the same so it doesn't really matter . Just make sure to check what your local skate shop has as they are usually all good.
Durability? Powell Flight decks or Santa Cruz VX.
Theyre all made from the same wood, doesnt matter if you just pick a legit brand
Powell per Alta is one of the best out there, you don’t even need a flight, I’d go with a 8.5-8.75.
Yes i loved his skating back in the day too. Josh Kalis too, really the whole Love park scene. Anyways man I've had really good luck with Deathwish and Baker strength wise. Ive been known to snap a lot of decks but these do really hold up for me.
This is just a beautiful board. Element deck, Grizzly grip tape, fancy hardware, white and blue thunder trucks, 54 millimeter oj wide wheels, Swiss bearings, red bones bushings.
i got that element deck to start again last year and its rlly soft wood, not good pop. element has gone down in quality by a ton recently, they pretty much make toy boards now from what I’ve seen/heard.
My pop is with this board is just fine as far as i can tell. Ive been on many boards and i can certainly tell the difference, this one has good pop. I would say maybe im lucky and got a good one or you may have got a faulty one. But i don’t know for sure.
Are you in the US or somewhere else?
Element moved its US product production to a low end wood shop that’s the kind of quality you would find at a big box store. I think for the European market they might still be using a good wood shop (not 100% sure about the part about the European products, just think I remember reading that somewhere).
thats good at least, I was wondering how you were liking it.
Hello, I've recently got into skateboarding and I want to build a complete. I've done research but the reviews aren't that clear. I want a deck that is durable, and is good all round. Price doesn't matter. Cheers
Magenta , Real, Powell Peralta , Hockey/FA . Check out Powells 'flight decks' if money is no object
Where tf did you come up with this list
Magenta: my friend who is rad swears by them. Nice shape and solid deck, sick team as well
Real: ishod wair
Powell Peralta: classics
FA/Hockey have a solid set of riders too. Some people love the shape and swear by em and others not. Worth trying though
https://www.slapmagazine.com/index.php?topic=103057.0 any brand of this list
Creature are sick as well
I havent tried any knife or flint decks but i really love my yellowood, helm and mable lab decks. What is your favourite? Any specific shape?
After trying multiple deck brands my personal preference is high kicks and longer decks 97mm and 33-34mm. Once I knew the size I liked the brand didn’t matter as much.
Hope this helps
Urmomsfavoritefingerboards. Bro makes amazing low and medium molds. Very much highly recommended
If you wanna avoid waiting for drops Funeral is super good and I haven’t seen them mentioned
I second this funeral is top tier!
Will check them out!
If you want to try a knife deck. Get a Cowply C2, it’s the exact same mold. John just offered different shapes.
Berlinwoods are some of my fav as well, Crete doctor decks are great, catfish bbq ( he’s doing a drop today ) Chems decks are also great as well.
Good to know, I have two C2s and really like em
Snapped Co and Rizen
There's just a couple manufacturers of decks (PS Stix, BBS, and a handful of others) that all get rebranded by major skate brands. I personally like boards that come from PS Stix, so that's why I ride Glue boards (they also make Toy Machine, FA, Quasi). I found that I burned through BBS ones too quickly (DGK, Baker/Deathwish). It is entirely subjective though. I would recommend trying out boards from different manufacturers and seeing which ones you like. Largely, a board from one manufacturer will be fairly similar regardless of brand (not 100%, but similar).
Here's the list of manufacturers with their associated brands:
I burned thru BBS decks but damn do they skate the best.
I actually really dig DGK boards. They always felt amazing to me. Also just had a Darkroom that was damn good too.
Same! DGKs are amazing but from my own personal experience, I would get maybe half of the lifespan of a Glue deck. But, for a board at day one, I'd take DGK every time.
Funny how everyone has different experiences like that bc all of my favorite boards have been Baker Boys ones. Only “pro” freshie I had break in the first 30 was a Welcome. Never again lol.
Antihero, FA, Real - in that order. Snappy and seem to last longer than others. For tricks, nothing smaller than 8.5
Polar, Passport, Limosine are the ones I’m riding right now and they’re all really good. Real decks are good from the one I skated.
Not a huge fan of WKND April Almost Baker or Revive, but some of that has to do with shape/concave not so much durability.
Limosine is sick, love all their designs and they have one of my favorite teams rn
Limosine and Polar have by far my favorite teams (and the 1991 jr polar shape is one of my favorites).
Sucked to see Ville leave but might have to try a palace deck now. He and Heitor are sick and I’ve heard good things about palace decks.
The shaped polar decks are so much freaking fun too!
I bounce around from DGK to enjoi. I'm not usually picky on company, more size and concave.
I've had a Powell Golden Dragon as my main board for years now and love it. The deck has a nice pop and holds up so well with the carbon fiber construction. Trucks are solid and the wheels roll smooth. Also dig the classic graphics. I'd definitely recommend the Golden Dragon to anyone looking for an affordable, quality complete skateboard that can handle serious shredding.
Looking at getting a new set up what’s the best board maker now? I use to ride almost impact support and p.rod plan B both use to last forever looking for good recommendations on board wheels and trucks I’m guessing reds are still the best bearings right?
No skill no clue, just had to go for sth and excited to test out ace af1 trucks - there‘s also a hollow lighter version
Heard they turn well but are stable, some prefer classics for „more buttery“ grinds (not my topic yet :)
Also got some ricta clouds 86a cheap, wanted sth more quiet that handles suboptimal ground more forgiving - also saw a lot of powell dragon formula fans
Read nothing else about reds
So my globe skate deck is almost destroyed and i am looking for a new one. Can you suggest me some brands whose decks are durable? I am thinking for a primitive, baker or element one.
I started skating again at 330 lbs down to 210 and I’ve found baker brands to hold up the best as far as a traditional construction deck goes. I specifically skate heroin brand because they offer some different concave options compared to baker and deathwish, but they’ve all held up well for me
My Real deck has lasted so much longer than my Baker deck ever did. Check them out!
DLX brands are awesome
Absolutely. I would be totally fine if I only skated Real decks from now on.
If $$ isn’t problem Powell flight decks. Otherwise if you’re new, try different brands to find what you like
Stereo
I’ve tried a few different brands but my zero has lasted the longest and I’m still skating it, baker boards last awhile but razor tail got really bad after a month or so.the only brand I’ve had a problem with is creature.
Any of these are good if you are looking to start. The only difference is the width, which depends on your foot size
Board size does not correlate to foot size. Its completely preference.
I should have clarified, beginners may find a wider board more comfortable to learn on
heroin boards are a thing but i get what you mean
Is 8'' not wide enough as a beginner?
Jart are a good brand, not heard of the others but they should all be fine as beginner boards
