TL;DR
Picture Quality
When it comes to picture quality, LG's OLED TVs are frequently praised. They provide exceptional color accuracy and deep blacks, making them ideal for movie watching and gaming [1:1],
[4:6]. Sony TVs also receive high marks for their display quality, particularly those running on Android TV, which offers a robust app ecosystem and ease of use
[1:8],
[1:10].
Operating System and Usability
The operating system is a significant factor in choosing a smart TV. Many users prefer using external devices like Apple TV or Roku for a better interface and performance [3:1],
[3:5]. However, if you prefer built-in systems, Sony's Android TV is well-regarded for its speed and reliability
[1:8], while Samsung's Tizen OS offers a variety of apps and content options, albeit with some ad-related drawbacks
[1:6].
Budget-Friendly Options
For those seeking value for money, TCL is often mentioned as a strong contender in the budget space. While not as premium as LG or Sony, TCL provides good performance for its price point, especially when paired with a streaming device like Roku [3:2]. Hisense is another brand that offers affordable smart TVs, though they may have limited app availability compared to more established brands
[5:2].
Avoiding Ads and Privacy Concerns
Many users express concerns about ads and privacy on smart TVs. Some recommend disabling WiFi on the TV to avoid these issues or opting for "dumb" TVs with external streaming devices [5:4],
[5:6]. Alternatively, using an ad blocker or choosing a TV brand known for fewer ad intrusions, like Sony, might be beneficial
[1:10].
Additional Considerations
When selecting a smart TV, consider your specific needs such as room size, viewing habits, and whether you'll use additional devices for streaming. For example, a large 77” OLED may be ideal for home theaters, while smaller models might suffice for casual viewing [2:4]. Always prioritize picture quality and usability over built-in smart features, as these can be supplemented with external devices.
Hello everyone, can you guys share your experience/recommendations regarding smart TV purchase. Especially regarding picture quality, ease of use and service support, which brands/companies do you love use?
none...they are all underpowered to provide the best streaming experience and the display / monitor itself will likely outlive the usefulness of the embedded apps
it's nearly impossible to avoid buying a "smart TV", but no one is being forced to use the built in streaming capabilities...buy an external streaming device
Agreed. We use the Xbox on (smart) one tv for streaming, and a Roku on the other (old and dumb) tv .
Too many of the settings are only accessible through an app. I don't want an app on my phone to control the picture mode... That's what the remote is for!
LG for OLED. On my third, an absolute pleasure to watch.
LG OLED with an AppleTV 4K, it’s perfect with infuse except for height channels in TrueHD Atmos.
The main feature is a universal Home Screen. So my next up to watch is tracked across all apps. The screen mirroring works great as well. And I have the same home page with my suggested next up on my phone iPad and tv.
Plus with new smart home features the new ones are thread enabled. So it acts as a hub
It doesn't lag when changing apps/looking for movies. I've sold 5 Apple TVs with this one phrase and I don't even work at Best Buy.
Samsung Smart TV has so many more features compared to Apple TV.
I have an Apple TV connected to the Samsung Smart TV but I only use it to access ad-free YouTube without paying premium by using VPN; as a Homekit Hub; and when I know exactly what I want to watch and want to get there fast.
Other than those 3 reasons, I mostly use the stock Samsung apps. It's not as fast as Apple TV but definitely has a lot more options and free content if you're just exploring to see what's out there.
Sony - Because Android TV and I have no issues.
Everyone in this thread acting like smart TVs are going to murder their families.
Some providers like Samsung serve ads via their os that sucked.
I have two mid-high end Sony TV's android TV is great. One TV is 5 years old and is holding up really well.
Sony is hands down my favorite consumer electronics manufacturer.
The fact that it ships with android TV is the icing on top.
I absolutely despise Samsung televisions - AdOS just feels like spyware.
Got a Sony Bravia 85” with an Apple TV because the built in navigation is cancer
We have 3 AppleTV’s and almost never touch the TV remotes. For streaming movies the picture and audio quality are also better with the AppleTV’s. Another nice thing about a peripheral is that you can take it with you when you travel. That’s very handy when you have young kids who are spent after a long day.
Alright, I’ve gone down the rabbit hole of YouTube reviews and “Top 10 Smart TVs of 2025” listicles, and honestly… most of them feel like paid ads. Every reviewer says “this is the best” until the next sponsor comes along.
I’m looking for a smart TV that actually gives you the best bang for your buck — not just some overpriced OLED with features I’ll never use. Do I really need a $1,500 TV just to watch Netflix and play a few PS5 games?
Is TCL still killing it in the budget space, or has someone else taken the crown? I’ve heard mixed things about Hisense and even Samsung’s cheaper models.
What’s the smart TV that actually makes you say, “yeah, that was money well spent”?
Best TV for your buck is incredibly subjective as it requires knowledge of your budget, what you intend to use it for (including content and distance) and where (room), which none are in your in post.
You mention OLED ‘features’ being overpriced, but no one buys OLED for the features. It’s the best picture quality you’ll get in any room except the brightest and they’ve come down in price over the years.
Drop the term smart tv
Nobody makes dumb tvs anymore
We just have tvs now
A $1500 OLED is a 77” TV and is the best technology around for picture quality in my opinion. I don’t know what features you won’t use unless you intentionally watch a shitty picture somehow.
Smart TV? Literally every TV sold is a smart TV.
I don't think you'll get too many replies in this thread.
You haven't given a price range and you don't seem to have an idea about what you're looking for, other than a "smart TV."
One that has the answers to jeopardy
The "genius tv" hasn't been invented yet. Those answers will come with the singularity, which unfortunately also comes with the rise of the machines. This has been well documented by Arnold
Lmao.
Go on Rtings.
I'm planning to get one that has the best operating system (ease of use, and especially speed,...). My Fire Stick crashes all the time and third-party apps keep freezing so need something way better.
I'd appreciate any replies.
Personally, I like my TCL TV and Roku Ultra. The TV has Google and several apps, but they never get used
Apple TV has good OS, easy to use. For individual app, YMMV.
Buy the TV for it's picture and video quality. Never buy based on OS/"smarts"
Apple TV.
Yup, none of the TV OS options are great. Apple TV is the gold standard.
This is the answer.
Buying a TV based upon its apps/OS is like choosing a car based upon the dealer with the best one year maintenance plan.
An Apple TV or equivalent is always going to perform better (for longer) and with less privacy concerns than a smart TV.
Yeah it has a similar chip to an iPhone 15 which will keep it snappy for years.
You can opt for an Apple TV 4k around $130 new, or you can try an ONN 4k Box from Walmart for $20. Use the Onn box for the folks back at home and it's worked great if you just wanted apps and didn't care about specific technologies. Super snappy, way better experience than my TCL r646 google tv experience.
I have always managed to buy the best tech stuff thanks to this reddit community, so please help me to find a good smart TV. There is Toshiba, LG UHD 4k, JVC UHD.....I have no idea what to get.
When buying a smart TV there are some types like WebOs and Google TV ...We have Konka that runs WebOS and in built in app of LG ThinQ...Pretty good. What type of things are you hoping from a Smart TV ...The best type depends on your needs..
Pretty basic needs, want to watch some movies (both downloaded and netflix) need good picture quality.
LG seems to be a good option for you. Sony are also good but the ones in SL are very pricy.
I use samsung QA43Q65B TV, which is 43" and runs Tizen OS. Tizen OS doesn't got much apps like in Android TV, but I have almost everything I need. Youtube, Netflix are available and inbuilt player is pretty good. One thing I miss is VLC player which can play pretty much everything.
I like the LG tvs because of their smart remote controller design.
LG, if you can go for a oled, it's expensive but trust me it's worth it
They say OLED burns after using it for awhile
We bought normal TV 55"(i think) 3 years old. Also bought google chromecast. You can also try this one 😜
May i know from where you bought the chromecast pls?
Yeah sure, searched in ikman and went to Colombo kollupitiya store and checked that, then we bought it. you can also buy Chromecast, Amazon Fire Stick, xiami also
Where did you get the tv? I'm also looking for a similar setup
There are options like Mi Box to convert a regular TV into a smart TV. Setup might not be clean as a smart TV but budget friendly.
You can Google model names to find local shops that sell those.
We have Samsung Crystal UHD. It’s great!
My Hisense I think it's Vida Os or something like that generally hasn't bothered me, as far as I can tell it only connects to the WiFi when it needs to.
Only real downside is obviously the apps are more limited than others but I have a Fire Cube anyway.
My smart TV never showed ads thankfully, but annoyed us in many other ways so we decided to turn off its WiFi. Et voilà, our TV is dumb.
You might be on to something, i would expect mine to have pop up messages asking to connect to wifi
Thankfully we don’t get any messages about the WiFi being off (LG telly). I think there might have been another setting we turned off, but I’d have to check the settings menu again. Whatever else we did, it’s doing a grand job of keeping our TV dumb.
I bought a dumb TV specifically for avoiding this issue if I wanted. And. I do.
Any you recommend? I dont even watch cable or whatever, i pirate everything into a harddrive and play video games thats all i do with a tv
A separate ad blocker perhaps.
I have an off brand I bought at Fry's in 2020 called a Silo. They don't make them anymore. But, since I was busy during the 70s, 80s and 90s antenna digital with commercials is all good for me. I don't have wifi at home. And, the 1 set that my scandalous sibling gave me has been reprogrammed by someone close enough to Bluetooth jack it. Now, it needs an LTE signal filter to be able to produce a signal that is not screwed with.
I will have to check out a Best Buy or Microcenter to see if anyone makes a stupid TV anymore.
My parents finally decided that it’s time to buy a smart tv to replace our small “flinstone” tv downstairs as a present for my dad retiring. My parents are fairly frugal with their money and splurge every now and again so no budget for a tv. The only thing they said was they wanted a TV that’s 40” or more.
Samsung smart TVs or TCL
A dumb tv with the best specs and an Nvidia Shield
Your best bet when going for something that a bit more frugal but still great quality is simply avoid the big brands like LG and sony etc, and go with a little less known brand but still solid - i recently bought a TCL smart tv after doing tons of research (55") to my kids room (the model is the number 1 on this list:https://thedebutreview.com/best-smart-tv/ ) the price is very fair (when compare to the same sony/LG tv) and I swear I can not tell the difference between this one and the much more expensive LG TV I got in the living room
Was habt ihr so und was wären eure Empfehlungen?
Hisense U7NQ mit 85 Zoll. Unschlagbares P/L. Oder halt ne kleinere Version davon. xD
Danke.
Geiles Teil
Hab den LG C2 65 Zoll, auch top.
Hab den C4 77. Geisteskranker TV
Rtings.com ist dein Freund
Wurde gesten geliefert bei mir. Bin crazy in love. So ein toller TV.

I'm looking to replace a Samsung Led 55inch "Smart" TV that is now dumb because the led backlights have gone out on nearly the whole left half of the screen, so really it's now a 30 inch TV. Was purchased for me by my wife as a birthday gift 4 years ago.
Anyways. I am looking for something that will last longer than 5 years if possible (I have come to terms with the fact that most TV's nowadays just won't last like they used to).
I hate the smart features on the newer TV's but I also understand that my best workaround is just to not connect the TV to the Internet, so no biggy.
I am running a PS5 as my media hub.
Would love to hear some recommendations specifically on brands, screen type, and 4k.
Thanks!
If this is the wrong sub, I'm so sorry.
Check out Rtings website for TV reviews and what fits your needs. Typically top tier stuff supports 4K, has OLED panel, DolbyVision support, HDMI 2.1 support, HDMI ARC/eARC are what modern TVs have. Unfortunately technology is never buy it for life, as a few years down the road they become obsolete. LG, Sony, Samsung, Phillips (overseas) are all good brands in the top tier OLED category.
This was an intense help thank you very much. I found my perfect TV.
Thank you I've been researching for 5 hours looking at different TV's and I could have saved so much time if I read your comment sooner surprisingly the TV and specs I picked for my bugget was number two on there list. It really helped me feel more confident in my future purchase
See, I always figured budget friendly was king if it cheated out on the UI, software features, etc. As long as the picture looks great and lasts a few years, that's about what I want out of a TV. I would probably steer clear of the cheapest OLEDs, you'd be better off getting a different type of panel with better brightness and contrast. Rtings is a great source though, pretty solid and trustworthy reviews. I've bought a monitor per their recommendation and its fantastic.
I almost pulled the trigger on a Bravia but the Hisense beat it.
Currently watching season 2 of Is it Cake on my Costco LG TV. Can't go wrong with Costco.
You could buy LG C3 OLED evo TV. it supports everything you could want in terms of gaming with 4 HDMI 2.1 ports for 4k/120Hz Dolby Vision gaming, VRR, ALLM, etc. you can play Xbox Series X on it and it looks amazing! By upping the sharpness to 15 and turning Super Resolution to high it looks almost 4k! Everything you will watch on it looks better than ever before and I can’t say enough good things about it.
This TV looks great. But out of curiosity... would now be a good time to buy or should I wait until black friday? This seems like the TV I want (I was previously looking at the HiSense U8k), I just want to make sure I nail the timing right.
Samsung makes Quantum Dot panels including QD-OLED panels. Sony and Samsung both use them in their models, although Sony’s TV supports Dolby vision and has more accurate colors without over saturation compared to Samsung. LG and Sony also have OLED TVs (non quantum dot).
Best TV in general (all-around) would probably be Sony A95L, which has quantum dot and OLED tech, however it is expensive, and some people may not need this.
B2 for $1000 is prob best bet, or an TCL 6 series if you don’t want to max out your budget
