TL;DR
OxiClean Products
OxiClean is frequently mentioned as a top choice for stain removal. The OxiClean Max Force Gel Stick is praised for its effectiveness on fresh stains, thanks to its scrubbing top [3:1]. The powder form of OxiClean is also recommended for tough stains like pasta sauce; users suggest soaking the stained item overnight with hot water and OxiClean powder before laundering
[4:1]. Additionally, OxiClean multipurpose baby stain remover in a spray bottle is noted for its convenience and efficacy
[4:5].
Dawn Dish Soap
Dawn dish soap is highlighted for its ability to tackle grease stains effectively. Users recommend saturating the stain with Dawn, rubbing it in, and then washing the garment [1:2]
[4:4]. Combining Dawn with OxiClean powder can enhance the stain removal process, especially for stubborn stains
[4:4].
Zote and Fels-Naptha Bars
For collar stains and other fabric-specific issues, Zote and Fels-Naptha bars are recommended. These laundry bars are inexpensive and effective; users advise wetting the bar and the stain, rubbing the bar into the fabric, and scrubbing with a brush before laundering [2:3]
[3:4]. However, it's worth noting that Zote has a strong citronella scent
[2:5].
Alternative Methods
Some users suggest alternative methods such as using white vinegar or baking soda for certain types of stains [5:2]
[5:3]. Immediate hand washing with cold water can also help prevent stains from setting
[5:1]. For specific stains like red pasta sauce on white shirts, repeated applications of OxiClean or Resolve may be necessary
[4:6]
[4:7].
Considerations Beyond the Discussions
While these products and methods are popular among users, it's important to consider the type of fabric and stain when choosing a stain remover. Some stains may require specialized treatments or multiple applications to fully remove. Always test any product on a small, inconspicuous area of the fabric first to ensure it does not cause damage or discoloration.
What really helped you with stubborn stains without damaging the clothes?
Dawn works amazing. Saturate the stain with Dawn and rub it in, then toss in the wash as one of the last items so it soaks a minute before the water gets to it.

I like Shout.
I like carbona for specific stains, oxyclean for general keep up. Different stains react differently though so I keep shout and method on hand as well.
I just moved out and only know how to use dryer/washer but my dress shirt collars are getting brown and i have no idea how to remove it.
If they have Zote or Fels-Naptha bars in your area, (they are very inexpensive, in the laundry aisle) you can pick up one of those. Wet the bar, wet your collar, rub the bar into the collar. Get a small, medium bristled brush, or even a toothbrush works well, get a little of the bar on your brush and scrub. After pre-scrubbing, launder as usual.
One caveat about Zote: it smells very strongly of citronella.
That's true. I don't mind the lemony scent, and it mostly washes out when the laundry is done. Edit to add, does the pink Zote have the same scent? I'm still on my OG bar of Zote I bought a few years ago when I first heard about it.
You need a pretreater with lipase or phosphodiesterase/dnase/nuclease.
What part of the world are you in?
Western canada
If you don’t mind shopping in-person, the absolute best product for this problem is Tide Rescue spray pretreater. Superstore and various other retailers carry it.
The problem is, it’s being reformulated and the new formula sucks. You want the old formula. So you want the bottle with RESCUE on the front in inch-high white letters. Don’t buy it if it doesn’t say RESCUE.
The other pretreater option available in Canada is Puracy Stain Remover (on Amazon).
Either one of these works the same way - hit the collars a half hour or so before washing.
The presence of browning is saying that your wash process isn’t quite doing the job. It needs to be warmer, longer, have more detergency or have enzymes that target the oil. Or all of the above.
These pretreaters can make up for any detergent.
The other option is to switch detergents to one with lipase in it. The three Canadian-market options are Tide powder, Eco-Max Heavy Duty or Sport liquids or The Unscented Company tablets. Any of the three will dissolve this oil and restore the texture and color. If you go with the liquid, dilute some of the detergent 50:50 with water, and hit those collars and cuffs that same hour before washing. They’ll look great again shortly.
I’ve been using Shout, but is hasn’t been working as well as I’d like.
Whatever their standard one is is what I have. With all of them, the longer you leave it on, the better it will work.
Several years ago America's Test Kitchen did a test of stain removers, and Oxyclean's won, hands down, so that's how I started using it
Zout
I’m only using oxyclean as I’ve used it in the past, but do you see a difference between the two?
I've never used OxiClean. I've used Zout for decades and it's always done a fine job. If a stain is removeable Zout will get it.
Both Zout and OxyClean are enzymatic cleaners but as far as I know OxiClean is a laundry detergent while Zout is a pre-laundry stain treatment.
With Zout I only have to dab on a spot of of it the size of a nickel on a stain. Or a quaretr if it's a large stain. So Zout would be much more cost-effective.
Fels Naptha laundry bar/stain remover is a classic: long-lasting, inexpensive, and effective.
I’ve never heard of it. I’ll have to give it a try! Thank you!
For specific stains I use the Carbona products.
I’m only using oxyclean as I’ve used it in the past, but do you see a difference between the two?
Oxyclean's stain remover seems to be the best.
Do you pretreat or just use in the laundry or a little of both?
I use the Oxyclean that comes in a tube with blue gel. The scrubbing top on stains works really well if the stains are fresh. Sometimes hard to find, so I buy several tubes of this stuff.
Thank you!!! I kid you not, I may try everything recommend 🤦🏻♀️
What's the stain?
The process is different if you have a turmeric stain from curry splatter on a green hoodie or a pint of blood from a stolen kidney on your white shirt.
I have white shirt and it has a few red pasta sauce stains and I hate it. Cuz it's white, it's very noticeable.
Put a dime sized amount of dish soap on the stain and rub that shit into the shirt with an ice cube (not your fingers). Wash out the soap and spray some vinegar on the spot where the stain was. If you do not have vinegar in a spray bottle you can blot it with a cotton pad or a paper towel corner dipped in vinegar. Let everything dry properly before running it in the wash.
Oxiclean is just sodium perborate powder. Dollarama sells their own brand for less and Resolve oxygen bleach as well for less. All the same thing.
Wet the stain, add the powder to it, and some Dawn dish soap, which is excellent for grease, scrub it in with something like a potato brush, let it sit for a while, then wash in cold and inspect after washing. If it is still there, repeat. Do not dry it if the stain is still present, as the heat will set the stain.
Oxi clean multipurpose baby stain remover. It comes in a spray bottle and if you have any stains just spray it into the stain, rub it in, then throw it in the laundry basket and forget about it. When you do laundry it will wash right out 👍
Oxi clean or resolve
The Oxiclean powder is the best stain remover. Wet the shirt with hot water and add the powder to the stain. Work the powder into the stain. Leave the shirt soaking overnight with a bit more powder and then launder as usual with your other laundry. It should come out.
I recently had a bad pasta sauce stain in one of my shirts and it took a couple of washes but it came out using this method.
agreed. white vingar and white wine too. key is to dump cold water on the stain asap, if the material can handle cold water. 90% will come out in next wash if you do that.
Tooth paste , baking soda
They go away after a few washes eventually
Depends on the stain and the fabric.
Generally, an immediate hand wash of the area with cold water run through the fabric from the opposite side of the stain will help.
Just wanted to shout out the only laundry stain spray to never let me down. Oil stains? Blood stains? Both of these stains that have already been through the dryer? It works better than anything else I’ve tried. Give it a go if you are looking for another laundry stain remover!
Ugh yes I love this one!! Works so well. If its a white item that really needs TLC, I spray it on the item then let it sit for a few days. Then let it soak in water + the whitening oxiclean overnight and then throw it in the wash the next morning. Comes out perfect
It’s such a great tool to have on hand! It takes care of just about everything.
Will it still work good if you use it then but it in the wash? I already have wet clothes and don't have room to hang it anywhere for it to dry for multiple days
Yes you could spray and wash right away. Hope you had success!
ive only heard great things about this stuff. I think its owed to the fact that it uses everything thats usually in oxiclean plus enzymes (like spray and wash)
I’ve never used the spray, only the gel. It works really well, but I had to stop using it because the scent is so strong it gets in all my other clothes in the load. I’m super sensitive to smells.
That’s true - it smells strong so I only spray where needed. One time I dumped like a quarter cup in the wash as an additive and regretted it. I’m scent sensitive too (though maybe not as much as you!)
Thank you for letting me know. Its 2 am and trying to find a good stain remover for a whole load of clothes
I found the “wash in the warmest water the fabric can handle” to be kind of oddly phrased. Is cold water never a good option?
I always wash mine in cold and it seems to work fine.
This actually got broth stains that had settled in months ago to come out albeit it took a few washes. Didn’t even ruin the design on the shirt!
Best stain remover recommendations !?
Saliva tbh. Its made of 2 things, 1 is antibacterial to a point and the other has bicarbonate ions and enzymes that dissolve things. Saliva is honestly the best option for things like blood removal but also most organic things can be dissolved by the enzymes in saliva.
Also tonic water
What is your favorite all around stain remover to have on hand?
If the stains come from people, animals or plant matter, or anything they can eat or drink, pick one of these:
Any of them work well. Spray, wait at least a half hour, wash as usual.
If your usual stains aren’t from these sources, there may be better choices.
I recently picked up a bottle of the Sprouts stain remover on your recommendation and wow am I impressed. I had a tea towel that had raspberries and blackberries all over it and it had sat stained for a while. I sprayed it with the spray, let it sit about an hour before throwing it in my normal hot towel load. Came out perfectly clean. No stains. I also wanted to note to people that this spray does not have a scent which I found particularly nice since some stain remover sprays are heavily fragranced.
It’s mostly food related. Avocado, oil, tomato, etc…
Any of these are solid choices. The 365 is cheapest and highly effective.
Oxiclean
Fels naphtha
Simple green.
Secret Weapon: Goop.
Way under the radar. Never had something it couldn’t handle. Originally developed as a waterless hand cleaner for mechanics. Turns out it’s amazing on laundry stains. Best part is it isn’t hard on clothes. So if you stain something, you can rub Goop into it, chuck it in the hamper, leave it for a week, and then wash it. (Sometimes even works better that way.)
With 2 teenage boys, I need the best stain stick or stain remover, please.
I’ve found that liquid detergents, like Tide Ultra Stain Release or Persil Liquid, when poured directly on stains works better than many pretreaters.
Something worth trying!
I want to get rid of a spaghetti and makeup stains on my white towels but can’t find a good stain remover!! I also tried oxiclean powder, oxiclean max force spray and dawn but they didn’t do much. Would love to hear your suggestions!
Sunshine works wonders kind of bleaching them. Do it after you’ve done a good hot wash with OxiClean. Try to orient the stains directly at the sun.
Sunshine is dry heat. Dry heat will help set the stain. Don't do that.
Back in the day really rich folks had special “yards” that were enclosed with tall shrubs/trees specifically for laying clothing on the grass. Combination of chlorophyll and sunshine whitened the unmentionables!
First, I've tried them all. At least one version of all the major brands. I've found the single best item is Fels-Naptha. But to really get the stains out, I will spray with Shout, or the Pink Stuff or Oxi Clean spray, get the material wet (on top of the washing machine or counter-hard surface) and then peel back the fels naptha and grind it in. The moisture from the spray, allow the soap bar (yes, its soap vs detergent) to really separate from the bar. Let it sit for at least 10 minutes. wash with triple the amount of normal detergent. If using liquid, I'll pour some of the detergent on top of stain as well, and try and work it in by stretching the material/fibers without doing it too much (don't want to damage material), extra rinse and repeat if necessary. Wash in really hot water. Do not put, still stained clothes into the dryer, it will likely set the stain. But, I've made a home solution that contains a mixture of a few of the sprays, then add fels naptha solution (hot water and shavings of the fels napthat until dissolved) That works wonders. But for one single item, if you were stuck on an island and had to choose, I'd go with Fels Naptha. And its dirt cheap. Its a bar of soap. Also, I've included the Spray foam Dawn into things too. Especially if the stain has grease as a component of whatever spilled. Like Bolognese sauce, has beef fat in it. I've got a 5 and 7 year old, who think their shirts are napkins...with a real napkin sitting right in front of them. Its hard to break bad habits.
best stain remover for clothes
Key Considerations for Choosing a Stain Remover:
Type of Stain: Different stains (grease, ink, wine, etc.) require specific treatments. Identify the type of stain to choose the most effective remover.
Fabric Compatibility: Ensure the stain remover is safe for the fabric type (cotton, silk, wool, etc.) to avoid damage.
Formulation: Stain removers come in various forms—liquids, sprays, sticks, and powders. Choose one that fits your application preference.
Ingredients: Look for enzymes or surfactants in the formulation, as they are effective in breaking down stains. Avoid harsh chemicals if you have sensitive skin.
Ease of Use: Some products require soaking or scrubbing, while others are simply applied and washed out. Choose one that fits your cleaning routine.
Recommendations:
OxiClean MaxForce: Great for a variety of stains, including grease and food. It contains enzymes that break down tough stains effectively.
Zout Laundry Stain Remover: Excellent for protein stains like blood and sweat. It has a triple enzyme formula that works well on various fabrics.
Shout Advanced Gel: Ideal for greasy stains and works well on both fresh and set-in stains. The gel formula allows for targeted application.
The Laundress Stain Solution: A more eco-friendly option that is effective on a wide range of stains and safe for delicate fabrics.
