TL;DR
Effective Products
Several products have been highlighted across discussions as effective stain removers for upholstery. The Folex Instant Carpet Spot Remover is frequently mentioned due to its simplicity and no-rinse formula, making it ideal for quick clean-ups [1:2],
[5:5]. Krud Kutter Cleaner/Degreaser/Stain Remover is praised by an upholsterer for its ability to remove tough stains like hot glue without damaging the fabric
[5:1]. OxiClean Max Force Gel Stick is noted for its effectiveness on fresh stains, with users recommending it based on personal experience and product tests
[4:1],
[4:2].
Application Techniques
The application method can significantly impact the effectiveness of stain removers. For instance, using a brush to gently work the cleaner into the fabric can enhance results, as suggested for products like Folex [5:3]. Similarly, a combination of warm water, mild dish soap, and vinegar has been recommended for coffee stains
[5:7]. It's also advised to clean the entire area around the stain to avoid leaving a noticeable clean spot
[5:6].
Specialized Tools
For those looking for more comprehensive cleaning solutions, tools like the Hoover CleanSlate XL and Bissell Little Green are recommended for their powerful suction and portability [1:1],
[1:2]. These machines can be used in conjunction with stain removers for deeper cleaning.
Alternative Options
Other alternatives include Woolite carpet and upholstery cleaner, which comes with a built-in brush for convenience [3:1], and Whip-it Cleaner, known for its general cleaning capabilities
[3:3]. Additionally, Zout is mentioned as a cost-effective enzymatic cleaner for pre-laundry stain treatment
[4:3].
In conclusion, selecting the best stain remover for upholstery depends on the type of stain, the fabric involved, and personal preferences regarding ease of use and additional tools.
I’d go with the Bissell Little Green — compact, powerful, and works like magic on spills and stains.
If you want something cheaper, Folex Instant Carpet Spot Remover is a great spray-and-go option. No rinse, no fuss.
This post helped me finally clean up my couch without wrecking the fabric. Worth a scroll!
Perhaps try /r/CleaningTips, if you would.
Thanks 🙏
Based on your situation, the best upholstery cleaner for your couch is the Hoover CleanSlate XL. Its powerful suction and specialized tools are perfect for deep cleaning, while the XL capacity tank minimizes interruptions. The portable design makes it easy to use across various areas, ensuring thorough cleaning without hassle.
Hey there! I work at a furniture store (started pretty recently) and I sold a floor model dining set to a customer. One chair has a small stain on it as displayed in the photo. I told the customer I'd see if I could do anything to remove it, and now here I am without any ideas for doing so without risking further issues. I have no idea what caused the stain in the first place. Any advice is greatly appreciated. Thanks!
I’ve used carpet cleaning powder in the past, scrubbed on with toothbrush. Don’t use too much powder and leave for 10 mins and brush or vacuum off
Probably whatever your grandma would recommend lol. Water lemon and soap or something?
Also use a brush (toothbrush or something plastic bristle) to gently swirl the stains out. Has worked well on all the auto seats I clean. We actuall have a powerful degreaser and stain remover called “Red Power” and that removes anything. Have to dilute it with water first tho.
Thank you!!
Nothing serious, just what you keep around to treat stains as they happen. Pet accidents / kid vomit / things like this. One of our toddlers recently had a pretty gnarly stomach bug and threw up a bunch of red pedialyte.
We’ve had “Incredible!” for awhile which has worked pretty well (not a fan of the pour tip top) but I’m curious if you experts have other ideas.
I use the Bissell carpet cleaning solution concentrate meant for the industrial ones you rent from Lowe’s. I put a tiny bit on a wet cloth and it’s taken every stain out so far without ruining the carpet.
Awesome. Would you mind sharing a link or tell me where to buy it? Google has a couple different options… is it the Max clean and protect?
I don’t remember the specific name but It was sold right next to the rentals at Lowe’s. I remember it said only to use it with the big rental carpet cleaner machines but that didnt stop me from using it everywhere lol
Whip-it Cleaner.
Woolite carpet and upholstery cleaner- the one with the green plastic brush thing on top- is my favorite for basic staining. I love it for my living room chair arms, but I’ve successfully used it on many smaller carpet stains, too.
Thank you!
LOL
I’ve been using Shout, but is hasn’t been working as well as I’d like.
Whatever their standard one is is what I have. With all of them, the longer you leave it on, the better it will work.
Several years ago America's Test Kitchen did a test of stain removers, and Oxyclean's won, hands down, so that's how I started using it
Zout
I’m only using oxyclean as I’ve used it in the past, but do you see a difference between the two?
I've never used OxiClean. I've used Zout for decades and it's always done a fine job. If a stain is removeable Zout will get it.
Both Zout and OxyClean are enzymatic cleaners but as far as I know OxiClean is a laundry detergent while Zout is a pre-laundry stain treatment.
With Zout I only have to dab on a spot of of it the size of a nickel on a stain. Or a quaretr if it's a large stain. So Zout would be much more cost-effective.
Oxyclean's stain remover seems to be the best.
Do you pretreat or just use in the laundry or a little of both?
For specific stains I use the Carbona products.
I’m only using oxyclean as I’ve used it in the past, but do you see a difference between the two?
Fels Naptha laundry bar/stain remover is a classic: long-lasting, inexpensive, and effective.
I’ve never heard of it. I’ll have to give it a try! Thank you!
I use the Oxyclean that comes in a tube with blue gel. The scrubbing top on stains works really well if the stains are fresh. Sometimes hard to find, so I buy several tubes of this stuff.
Thank you!!! I kid you not, I may try everything recommend 🤦🏻♀️
I’ve tried so many various stain removers for clothing and upholstery. Looking to see if anyone has any particular recommendations. For context, I am in the market right now to attempt to clear what seems to be a coffee stain from the upholstery of this office chair!
Folex and an extraction cleaner like the little green machine
Would you soak the stain in the Folex and then extract that with the green machine? Or would you dry it after the Folex and use whatever cleaner is usually inside the green machine?
Don’t soak but saturate with the Folex and work it in with a brush. Then use the green machine with just water. If that doesn’t get it all, you can do another pass with the green machine using the Bissell cleaning solution.
On white fabric, try sorrel salt (or oxalic acid), with hot water, it works very well, otherwise, injector vacuum cleaner with a car fabric cleaner, you soak, you rub, you let it act, and you vacuum, and it comes out perfect
Also you need to clean the entire seat, not just the stain. Otherwise you’ll end up with a clean spot on a dirty chair! Honestly, we had ours steam cleaned when our carpets were cleaned and that worked the best.
warm water and full drops of mild dish soap and vinegar help to remove coffee stain and works great.
The best secret of all is Krud Kutter cleaner/degreaser/stain remover. I am an upholsterer and it is great. I have had hot glue fall from the gun onto a chair and got it off with this without ruining the fabric. removes wax too.
OH and its food safe, non toxic and biodegradable. Can't beat it. They also sell carpet cleaner, which I use in my carptet cleaner machine or spot treat. I buy both of the products by the gallon.
I bought mid-century vinyl chair, that I thought I might have to reupholster and this product cleaned it to new condition. They sell it in most hardware stores or giant hardware stores.
Best stain remover recommendations !?
Saliva tbh. Its made of 2 things, 1 is antibacterial to a point and the other has bicarbonate ions and enzymes that dissolve things. Saliva is honestly the best option for things like blood removal but also most organic things can be dissolved by the enzymes in saliva.
Also tonic water

They sell a can spray oxy cleaner at Oreillys that stuff works!
1 part Dawn dishwashing liquid to 2 parts Hydrogen Peroxide. Store in dark, glass spray bottle.
Apply to stain for at least 10 minutes prior to washing, longer if need be, for tougher stains. Launder as usual and watch your stains disappear! Best stain remover ever and it costs pennies to make. Another great benefit is that it’s biodegradable!
I keep a spray bottle of hydrogen peroxide in the laundry room for blood, wine and berry stains. They literally disappear as it foams.
I’ve never had any item of clothing damaged or spotted by doing so.
Thank you! I’ve been trying to get this point across 😊
Oxiclean is dry hydrogen peroxide!
“You can use any hydrogen peroxide, even the common three-percent dilution you’d buy from a drug store, directly on a fresh stain” 4 alternatives to Oxiclean
beware - hydrogen peroxide will bleach your shit, yo.
noticeably.
No, it won’t. I’ve used 3% Hydrogen peroxide on all types of household materials, let it sit for 24 hours and have yet to see anything discolored. I use straight 3% hydrogen peroxide on my wood floors without ever having an unwanted reaction, too. Chlorine bleach is quite a different story though.
Only in high concentration
Stain remover treatment is often specific to the type of stain.
Dawn covers all the grease stains and hydrogen peroxide covers all the organic ones. That’s likely a broader range of stains than a commercial product would be effective for.
You can also make a GREAT bathroom cleaner or countertop cleaner using the same ingredients, plus water:
1 part hot water 3 drops of Dawn (swirl to mix in the Dawn) 2 parts 3% Hydrogen Peroxide
Spray your shower or bathtub after each use to keep it sparklingly clean! No need to scrub or wipe off.
For the naysayers: Nitpick all you want, but this is an old remedy that’s proven effective. It doesn’t cause white spots on clothing and it’s a safe treatment (biodegradable too). Seriously, if you’re really bent on arguing about a stain remover, maybe you should make your own post about what’s better. I try to pass on something that’s been so great for my family and so many others …and I get nonsense here. If you don’t like this method, move on. If it doesn’t apply to your stains, move on, but don’t insert negativity about a simple remedy.
I have couches and carpets that will surely get stains once in a while, what’s your guys holy grail nonwash stain removal?
Spot Shot spray (in a can). Works great, essentially dry cleaning fluid in a spray can
One of my fondest college memories is of my drunken roommate excitedly screaming FOLEXXXX! and running out of the room to grab the bottle when someone spilled wine on our carpet at a party. I’ve never seen someone more excited about getting the chance to use a cleaning product.
Was I your roommate?
Ohh! And it is inexpensive. I have some recent cat puke stains on a carpet that I’ve tried so much on but is still faintly there. I am going to try this out. Thanks for the tip.
Home Depot sells it by the jug!
The first picture is puke/bile stains!
I use this on laundry too and so far no problems
Good tip. Clothing stain remover.
We sell it at Home Depot , and a gallon is just under $20 much better buy than Amazon
Seriously. It's only ever on our rugs! Ugh...
Everyone raves about this
And rightfully so!
-Two senior dog household.
I rarely have a raving endorsement of products, after all I buy something because I expect it to work for the purpose it's advertised for. It's kind of the agreement under which they get my money.
But Folex seems to get headscratchingly good results on the worst of stains when so many other shampoos and spot cleaners simply make the stain less apparent, but don't remove it.
I have dogs, kids, and do auto detailing and I have yet to find a stain that couldn't be lifted with Folex, a bristle brush, and a few towels for blotting. It's so satisfying, I kind of get excited now when I find a new stain to tackle.
