When it comes to tackling stubborn stains on clothes, several products have been highlighted by users as effective solutions. Here are some of the top recommendations based on various discussions:
OxiClean Products
OxiClean is frequently mentioned as a reliable stain remover. The OxiClean Max Force Gel Stick is praised for its effectiveness on fresh stains, with a scrubbing top that helps work the product into the fabric [3:1]. The OxiClean powder is also recommended for tough stains like pasta sauce; soaking the stained item overnight with the powder can yield good results
[4:1]. It's noted that OxiClean is an enzymatic cleaner and works well when left on stains for a longer period
[3:2].
Zout Stain Remover
Zout is another enzymatic cleaner that has been used successfully for decades. It is particularly cost-effective because only a small amount is needed to treat stains [3:3]. Users appreciate its ability to remove a wide range of stains effectively.
Fels-Naptha and Zote Bars
For those who prefer a more traditional approach, Fels-Naptha laundry bar is a classic choice. It is long-lasting, inexpensive, and effective [3:4]. Similarly, Zote bars are recommended for collar stains; they are inexpensive and work well when scrubbed into the fabric with a brush
[2:3].

What really helped you with stubborn stains without damaging the clothes?
Dawn works amazing. Saturate the stain with Dawn and rub it in, then toss in the wash as one of the last items so it soaks a minute before the water gets to it.

I like Shout.
I like carbona for specific stains, oxyclean for general keep up. Different stains react differently though so I keep shout and method on hand as well.
I just moved out and only know how to use dryer/washer but my dress shirt collars are getting brown and i have no idea how to remove it.
If they have Zote or Fels-Naptha bars in your area, (they are very inexpensive, in the laundry aisle) you can pick up one of those. Wet the bar, wet your collar, rub the bar into the collar. Get a small, medium bristled brush, or even a toothbrush works well, get a little of the bar on your brush and scrub. After pre-scrubbing, launder as usual.
One caveat about Zote: it smells very strongly of citronella.
That's true. I don't mind the lemony scent, and it mostly washes out when the laundry is done. Edit to add, does the pink Zote have the same scent? I'm still on my OG bar of Zote I bought a few years ago when I first heard about it.
You need a pretreater with lipase or phosphodiesterase/dnase/nuclease.
What part of the world are you in?
Western canada
If you don’t mind shopping in-person, the absolute best product for this problem is Tide Rescue spray pretreater. Superstore and various other retailers carry it.
The problem is, it’s being reformulated and the new formula sucks. You want the old formula. So you want the bottle with RESCUE on the front in inch-high white letters. Don’t buy it if it doesn’t say RESCUE.
The other pretreater option available in Canada is Puracy Stain Remover (on Amazon).
Either one of these works the same way - hit the collars a half hour or so before washing.
The presence of browning is saying that your wash process isn’t quite doing the job. It needs to be warmer, longer, have more detergency or have enzymes that target the oil. Or all of the above.
These pretreaters can make up for any detergent.
The other option is to switch detergents to one with lipase in it. The three Canadian-market options are Tide powder, Eco-Max Heavy Duty or Sport liquids or The Unscented Company tablets. Any of the three will dissolve this oil and restore the texture and color. If you go with the liquid, dilute some of the detergent 50:50 with water, and hit those collars and cuffs that same hour before washing. They’ll look great again shortly.
I’ve been using Shout, but is hasn’t been working as well as I’d like.
Whatever their standard one is is what I have. With all of them, the longer you leave it on, the better it will work.
Several years ago America's Test Kitchen did a test of stain removers, and Oxyclean's won, hands down, so that's how I started using it
Zout
I’m only using oxyclean as I’ve used it in the past, but do you see a difference between the two?
I've never used OxiClean. I've used Zout for decades and it's always done a fine job. If a stain is removeable Zout will get it.
Both Zout and OxyClean are enzymatic cleaners but as far as I know OxiClean is a laundry detergent while Zout is a pre-laundry stain treatment.
With Zout I only have to dab on a spot of of it the size of a nickel on a stain. Or a quaretr if it's a large stain. So Zout would be much more cost-effective.
Fels Naptha laundry bar/stain remover is a classic: long-lasting, inexpensive, and effective.
I’ve never heard of it. I’ll have to give it a try! Thank you!
For specific stains I use the Carbona products.
I’m only using oxyclean as I’ve used it in the past, but do you see a difference between the two?
Oxyclean's stain remover seems to be the best.
Do you pretreat or just use in the laundry or a little of both?
I use the Oxyclean that comes in a tube with blue gel. The scrubbing top on stains works really well if the stains are fresh. Sometimes hard to find, so I buy several tubes of this stuff.
Thank you!!! I kid you not, I may try everything recommend 🤦🏻♀️
What's the stain?
The process is different if you have a turmeric stain from curry splatter on a green hoodie or a pint of blood from a stolen kidney on your white shirt.
I have white shirt and it has a few red pasta sauce stains and I hate it. Cuz it's white, it's very noticeable.
Put a dime sized amount of dish soap on the stain and rub that shit into the shirt with an ice cube (not your fingers). Wash out the soap and spray some vinegar on the spot where the stain was. If you do not have vinegar in a spray bottle you can blot it with a cotton pad or a paper towel corner dipped in vinegar. Let everything dry properly before running it in the wash.
Oxiclean is just sodium perborate powder. Dollarama sells their own brand for less and Resolve oxygen bleach as well for less. All the same thing.
Wet the stain, add the powder to it, and some Dawn dish soap, which is excellent for grease, scrub it in with something like a potato brush, let it sit for a while, then wash in cold and inspect after washing. If it is still there, repeat. Do not dry it if the stain is still present, as the heat will set the stain.
Oxi clean multipurpose baby stain remover. It comes in a spray bottle and if you have any stains just spray it into the stain, rub it in, then throw it in the laundry basket and forget about it. When you do laundry it will wash right out 👍
Oxi clean or resolve
The Oxiclean powder is the best stain remover. Wet the shirt with hot water and add the powder to the stain. Work the powder into the stain. Leave the shirt soaking overnight with a bit more powder and then launder as usual with your other laundry. It should come out.
I recently had a bad pasta sauce stain in one of my shirts and it took a couple of washes but it came out using this method.
What is your favorite all around stain remover to have on hand?
If the stains come from people, animals or plant matter, or anything they can eat or drink, pick one of these:
Any of them work well. Spray, wait at least a half hour, wash as usual.
If your usual stains aren’t from these sources, there may be better choices.
I recently picked up a bottle of the Sprouts stain remover on your recommendation and wow am I impressed. I had a tea towel that had raspberries and blackberries all over it and it had sat stained for a while. I sprayed it with the spray, let it sit about an hour before throwing it in my normal hot towel load. Came out perfectly clean. No stains. I also wanted to note to people that this spray does not have a scent which I found particularly nice since some stain remover sprays are heavily fragranced.
It’s mostly food related. Avocado, oil, tomato, etc…
Any of these are solid choices. The 365 is cheapest and highly effective.
Oxiclean
Fels naphtha
FOLEX!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Secret Weapon: Goop.
Way under the radar. Never had something it couldn’t handle. Originally developed as a waterless hand cleaner for mechanics. Turns out it’s amazing on laundry stains. Best part is it isn’t hard on clothes. So if you stain something, you can rub Goop into it, chuck it in the hamper, leave it for a week, and then wash it. (Sometimes even works better that way.)
agreed. white vingar and white wine too. key is to dump cold water on the stain asap, if the material can handle cold water. 90% will come out in next wash if you do that.
Tooth paste , baking soda
They go away after a few washes eventually
Depends on the stain and the fabric.
Generally, an immediate hand wash of the area with cold water run through the fabric from the opposite side of the stain will help.
With 2 teenage boys, I need the best stain stick or stain remover, please.
I’ve found that liquid detergents, like Tide Ultra Stain Release or Persil Liquid, when poured directly on stains works better than many pretreaters.
Something worth trying!
What is the best stain removing detergent in your opinion? I typically buy the cheaper brands (which is what I can only usually afford) but lately between my two kids and boyfriend’s clothes, it’s just not working anymore. I’m willing to spend a little more if it’s worth it.
Tide Powder with Bleach, Liquid Tide or Liquid Persil…they are always on sale and if you belong to a warehouse club, you will get the best price there.
The less expensive detergents don’t have the same quantity or quality of ingredients that the more expensive ones do which is why they don’t work as well. Aside from that, you only need a minimal amount of a high-quality detergent to clean your clothes; 2-3 tbsp per moderately soiled load. In the long run, they are more cost effective.
This is a silly q. But is it effective to pretreatthe stains, or does it still help even without the pretreating?
Not a silly question at all. It depends on what the stains are; for oil stains, you could pre-treat with a drop or two of dish dishwashing liquid, but other than that, these are pretty effective on most stains. If you’re concerned, hang the items to dry instead of putting them in the dryer so that any remaining stains, don’t get set in. You can then try soaking and re-laundering, but for most stains only an initial wash should be necessary.
I always pretreat if I manage to spot the stain before it goes in. My thought process:
So, nothing to lose by pretreating, other than time and effort.
Persil does not contain lipase in the US anymore so it’s still okay, but not the best choice. I will post a recent post I made with all the US choices with lipase, and the comments have some other country’s good options with enzymes

Thanks.
Best source for ammonia? Main or rinse cycle?
Dawn dish soap on the stain
Tide just relaunched their free and clear powder under the name Clean & Gentle. It is a very, very good detergent.
Powders are more effective, and you don't need to use a huge amount to work really well. A lot of people mentioned US brands, not available to everyone. Even ALDI powders here have a decent mix of enzymes and other essential ingredients, and they are usually pretty low prices.
Powders are more effective because they have more cleaning agents. In liquid form, there's only so much cleaning agent / detergent/ enzyme that can be held in suspension limiting their effectiveness.
Adding Biz as a booster can make a cheap detergent work better. To get rid of body oils, you need lipase, which is missing from a lot of detergents. Adding Biz, which has lipase, fills that gap and takes care of the oils (which is why your clothes smell funky and gross). Read the ingredient labels in the store to find lipase! (I struggled for years and this was the solution.)
I used Fels-Naptha and have never been disappointed. It works well and is super affordable, I keep a bar by laundry, one in the kitchen and one in the bathroom.
Fels-Naptha is lIke magic. Seriously love the stuff
Good old blue dawn dish soap gets out nearly all of the stains I’ve encountered. I always try that first.
Sunshine. It works! Just wet the garment and hang it in the sun. All the stains are gone.
We cloth diaper and a day of drying on the line will get rid of ALL the stains.
Puracy natural stain remover. It’s a little pricey, but 100% worth it and takes out any stain. I won’t buy another stain remover again
Best stain remover recommendations !?
Saliva tbh. Its made of 2 things, 1 is antibacterial to a point and the other has bicarbonate ions and enzymes that dissolve things. Saliva is honestly the best option for things like blood removal but also most organic things can be dissolved by the enzymes in saliva.
Also tonic water
