How to Get Ink Stains Out of Clothes

TL;DR Use alcohol-based solutions like hairspray or rubbing alcohol, and consider specialized stain removers for persistent stains.

Alcohol-Based Solutions

The most frequently recommended method for removing ink stains is using alcohol-based products. Hairspray is a popular choice due to its alcohol content, which helps dissolve the ink [1:2], [1:10], [5:1]. Rubbing alcohol is another effective option, often suggested for soaking the stained area [1:5], [3:4], [4:1]. It's important to blot the stain rather than rub it to prevent spreading [1:9].

Specialized Stain Removers

For more stubborn stains, specialized stain removers like Carbona Stain Devils are recommended. These products are designed specifically for ink and can be found at grocery stores or online [1:12], [4:3]. Amodex is another product mentioned that might help with ink stains [4:3].

Alternative Methods

Some users have had success with alternative methods such as cheap vodka [1:4] or nail polish remover (acetone) [3:3], [5:3]. These solvents can break down ink stains effectively but should be used with caution depending on the fabric type and color.

Preventing Permanent Stains

It's crucial to avoid putting ink-stained clothes in the dryer before the stain is removed, as heat can set the stain permanently [2:2], [5:2]. If the stain persists after initial treatments, repeating the process or trying different methods may yield better results [1:7].

Creative Solutions

If all else fails, some suggest embracing the situation by tie-dyeing the garment or dyeing it a darker color to cover the ink stains [5:6], [5:8]. This creative approach can give new life to a stained item.

These methods provide a range of options for tackling ink stains, but results can vary based on the type of ink and fabric involved.

ORIGINAL POST

I did my laundry last night and my boyfriend asked me to throw in his work clothes, which are all dress shirts and dress pants that he just bought 2 weeks ago and dropped $700 for.

I switched everything into the dryer last night before going to sleep and went to grab something for work this morning and started noticing little spots on the clothing. I tried not to freak out until I saw what it was that caused those spots, and then I saw it. A PEN. Worst possible scenario, I guess he left a pen from work in his pocket. ALL OVER his new work clothes, there’s just little spots and streaks, nothing huge but there’s about 5-8 spots per piece of clothing, so it’s very noticeable. I don’t really care about my clothes because they’re all just casual, nothing expensive, but I am in desperate need of advice on how to get the ink out of his shirts and pants.

I don’t want for him to have to get all new work clothes but I know that may be the only option, anything at all helps, we’re very desperate!! thank you!!

Just seconding the hairspray, it works really well.

The alcohol melts the ink, the ink gets bonded to the “glue” in the hair spray.

In the past I have spray ink heavily and then washed the clothes again and the ink is washed away.

I used to get pen off my scrubs with hairspray and it worked pretty well.

I had a pen leak in the 90's on a brand new shirt. Used hairspray and copius amounts of water to remove the ink. Was a mild discoloration there but even that faded eventually.

I soaked a shirt in cheap vodka to get ink out and it worked like magic.

Ink is usually alcohol-based so try some rubbing alcohol. Hand sanitizer works sometimes too. You’ll have to blot it with a white cloth or else the ink will just create rings around the alcohol spots. There’s a chance though that the dryer set the stain and it won’t ever come out.

Buy LOTS of alcohol do you can SOAK the shirt. Ink is super concentrated so it takes lots of alcohol to get it out. Thankfully most of the clothes I’ve done that too were darker colors but I’ve always had pretty good luck as long as I use enough alcohol.

I suggest doing several cycles of dabbing/dousing with alcohol and immediately putting the clothes through a cold wash cycle. Check for ink stains, blot/douse any existing ink again, and repeat. It may work and it may not, but it’s worth a try. I have some casual clothes that got ink on them in a similar circumstance that eventually didn’t have ink after a good month or two of wear/wash cycles.

My mom was a nurse in the 70's, and found out about using hair spray on ballpoint ink stains. When she found an ink stain on her white uniform, she would spray the stain with the hair spray when she put the uniform in the washer, and stain would come out in the wash.

you have to put the alcohol on something that will absorb and leave on the cloth. don't rub it will be transferred. like for a small spot I would use a qtip, slowly all the ink goes into the qtip.

Hairspray works well and it's cheap.

If that doesn't get rid of all the stain, look for the Bona stain devils is the little yellow bottles.  There are about 10 varieties and one is specifically for ink and crayon.

I used it to get one of three concurrent, different stains (along with two other stain-specific treatments) out of kiddo's fave white tee after a bad day.

Even if it went through the drier, you can use enzymes especially for ink removal. You just have to soak the areas with stains in them overnight (sometimes two nights). I used rubber bands to pull the fabric together with the bands and dip the stained areas into a little cup with the enzymes. The ones I've used for ink that have always worked are called Carbona Stain Devils (#3 is for ink). The bottles are tiny though, so if you have a lot of stains, you'll need more than one bottle. You can get them on Amazon, Ebay, my Vons (Safeway) store also carries some of them.

Yeah. I've always sworn by Zippo type 'lighter fluid' it's extremely refined petrol. I was introduced to it when studying graphic design -old skool style, drawing, cutting, sticking, 'marker rendering' -we used lighter fluid to remove sticky stuff, to blend 'magic markers' (and letraset ones too) in marker renderings. Back in the day the markers were little glass jars with a metal nib-hole and cap hiding a shaped 'felt tip' for broad or fine strokes... However, when temping as school Science tech I had to try & help a colleague who'd got ball-pen ink over her lovely, and expensive, new skirt. 95% iso-propanol was found to be most effective... We soaked well first, then placed it over a thick wad of absorbent paper / cloth, before trying to squeeze the solvent & ink out the rear into the wad, draining and turning the wad, then adding more solvent to the clothing and repeating. The lovely young teacher I assisted was most impressed, and showed her great appreciation as it became clear that her new skirt had been saved.

Dry cleaning worked (at least in years gone by, not sure about nowadays as they've gone to more 'ecologically acceptable' techniques) by squirting highly effective solvents through clothing materials, dissolving any staining matter and finally being collected ready for recycling / reuse in the system.

Depends on the type of ink. Try rubbing alcohol. If that doesn’t work, the pen might use a type of ink that molecularly bonds with the textile fibre. If it’s that kind of ink, it’s permanent.

I’m sorry. You can try a more aggressive solvent as a last ditch effort. Don’t put the items in the dryer or it will certainly set the stain.

CutieKelly · 4 years ago

You can try rubbing alcohol...but often you need to really saturate/soak the item in alcohol.

Definitely try spot cleaning with rubbing alcohol, and if that doesn't work, you could try soaking items that you really want clean in a bucket or sink. It may not be cost effective to soak everything, considering how much rubbing alcohol you'll need.

Good luck!

Cheap Aerosol hairspray works well. Really soak the stain in hairspray (place the stained section of clothing into a cup and fill with hairspray for best results) then let it sit for an hour or more. After letting it sit rinse in hot water. Repeat entire process until ink is gone.

Not sure about ink, but I’ve had old oil stains on cargo pants completely lifted without any damage to the fabric by combining Dial’s grease cutting dish detergent (the blue kind) with baking soda and hydrogen peroxide, and letting the mixture sit on the stain for an hour (or more...overnight works, too) followed by a standard cold wash in the washing machine. No specific formula; I just make a paste utilizing the baking soda to control how thick or watery it is, and I swear this combo gets everything I throw at it out!

Soak in 93% alcohol, blot, repeat. Just soaking and then washing won’t work. The other option is to outsource this to your friendly local professional dry cleaner. Solvent stain removers can do a lot.

In college we used to buy clothes from gabe's that had pen or markers stains. Take them home saturate the stain with alcohol bases hair spray, then wash them. Before drying them, make sure the stain comes out, drying will set the stain. If it didn't come out, repeat spraying with hair spray. Most of the time it comes out in the 1st wash.

If its ink from a ballpoint pen, rubbing alcohol can do the trick. Submerge it for like 15 minutes. You can use a sponge on the ink to absorb the ink (don't scrub it, just gently touch it with the sponge to absorb it), then rinse with cold water, and to the washing machine. (Stain remover, or bleach safe for clothing).

If its a felt tip, I'm not sure, sorry

Dilute the rubbing alcohol a little. Not heaps. Just enough to stop it evaporating before it can bring the ink up.

Some clothes may be damaged by milk/windex etc. So try first on a part of the clothing item where any unintended discoloration is not visible when worn. Then if there is no damage, then go for the actual stained area.

The hairspray method is best with the spray cheap kind (I don't know why) and definitely set up paper towels or rags underneath the stain and some to blot on top. Saturate the stain, blot and repeat. Let dry and treat again before washing and drying normally. Don't wash with anything else that can get ruined as the hairspray releases the ink somehow.

1 upvotes on reddit
cayce911 · 8 months ago

Hairspray has alcohol, but you already did straight alcohol. You need to use goof-off. Yellow can sold at home depot. It's like a turpentine. Put paper towels underneath the stain, pour it on, blot with more paper towels, rinse with cold water. It's okay to wash in your machine but do not use the dryer if the stain exists, it can set. Repeat if needed.

How to get ink stains out of clothes

Here are some effective methods to remove ink stains from clothes:

  1. Act Quickly: The sooner you treat the stain, the better your chances of removing it.

  2. Blot, Don’t Rub: Use a clean cloth or paper towel to blot the stain gently. Rubbing can spread the ink further.

  3. Use Rubbing Alcohol or Hand Sanitizer:

    • Place a paper towel under the stained area.
    • Apply rubbing alcohol or hand sanitizer directly onto the stain.
    • Blot with a clean cloth until the ink lifts.
    • Rinse with cold water.
  4. Try Hairspray:

    • Spray a small amount of hairspray on the stain.
    • Let it sit for a few minutes, then blot with a clean cloth.
    • Rinse with cold water.
  5. Milk Method:

    • Soak the stained area in a bowl of milk overnight.
    • Rinse and wash as usual.
  6. Commercial Stain Removers: If home remedies don’t work, consider using a commercial stain remover specifically designed for ink stains.

  7. Wash Normally: After treating the stain, wash the garment in the hottest water safe for the fabric.

Important Tips:

  • Always test any cleaning solution on a hidden area of the fabric first to ensure it doesn’t cause damage.
  • Avoid putting the stained clothing in the dryer until the stain is completely removed, as heat can set the stain.

Recommendation: For persistent stains, a combination of rubbing alcohol and a commercial stain remover often yields the best results. Always follow the care label instructions on your clothing for the best outcome.
