How to Remove Grease Stains from Fabric

TL;DR

  • Use Dawn dish soap, baking soda, and warm water.
  • Consider commercial degreasers like EasyOff or ZEP.

Dish Soap and Baking Soda Method

One of the most effective methods for removing grease stains involves using Dawn dish soap and baking soda. Apply Dawn directly onto the stain, then cover it with baking soda. Rub the mixture into the fabric, let it sit overnight, and wash as usual [1:1]. This method is praised for its effectiveness in removing stubborn grease stains on the first try.

Commercial Degreasers

For set-in grease stains, commercial degreasers such as Greased Lightning, MeanGreen, EasyOff, or ZEP can be particularly effective [2:1][5:3]. These products are designed to break down grease and can be applied directly to the stain. Allow them to sit for a while before washing the fabric in warm water [2:1].

Vinegar and Hot Water

Another recommended approach is using vinegar combined with hot water. Vinegar acts as a natural degreaser and can help lift grease stains when used in conjunction with hot water [3:4][5:1]. Ensure you wear gloves when handling hot water, as it helps melt old, polymerized oil off surfaces [5:2].

Steam Cleaning

For grease stains in cars or other non-fabric surfaces, a steam cleaner or carpet cleaner with a degreasing soap solution can be effective [4:1]. If a steam cleaner is not available, dish soap and water can be used to soak and scrub the area, followed by drying with towels or a vacuum [4:1].

Additional Tips

  • Murphy’s Oil Soap can be used for fresh stains but may not work effectively on stains that have already been washed [3:1].
  • Trisodium phosphate (TSP), found in paint supply sections of hardware stores, is another option for stubborn grease stains [5:8].
  • For persistent stains, consider trying a combination of Dawn Powerwash, Magic Eraser, and hot tap water [5:6].

I'm sure I've if you place a brown paper bag of the stain and iron on the paper bag where the stain and that apparently helps get it out..

Oh! My go to is spray and wash. I spritz the area(s….usually multiple areas with my son 🤦🏻‍♀️) and then I put some Dawn dish soap on a scrub brush and brush spots as well. Toss in washer at night and wash in am. 9 times out of 10, does the trick.

I got olive oil out of my jeans by soaking it in Dawn, then buried it in baking soda. Rubbed it together, let it sit overnight, brushed it off, and washed as usual. Got the grease stain out on the first try with no problem. I think I washed them in warm water. I wish you well and will be eager to hear what worked!

Liquid dish detergent on the spots. Then launder. Any brand will work, they're all degreasers. Speaking from many years of experience.

I learned the Dawn dish soap trick over 20 years ago when I had a bunch of employees covered in butter splatter at a movie theater we just opened. One of the moms always sent her daughter to work without any spots on her uniform. All the other employees were marveling at how she was spotless and she came back the next day and told us all the secret. It's been part of my wash routine ever since.

I use OxiClean stain remover that comes in a spray bottle or you can try a degreaser product like Greased Lightning or MeanGreen on the spots. I let it sit on the stain for a bit then machine wash with warm water.

Is there something you can put in the wash to remove grease stains?

I have to wash my clothes on cold. As a result, grease stains are pretty stubborn. Is there something I could just add to the whole wash to reliably get them out without having to find and spray each individual stain?

No, there really isn’t. Your best bet is to treat the individual stains. I like to use full strength Dawn. Just put a few drops and rub in. If it’s only a few small stains, then I don’t rinse it out but if the grease stain is huge, treat, let sit for a while, then rinse before washing in the machine. Over-sudsing in your machine will cause damage to it.

If the item with the grease stain hasn’t been washed since the stain happened, you can soak it in water with a Liberal amount of Murphy’s Oil Soap, or you can even just put the Murphy’s undiluted straight on the spot and let it sit before washing.

However, if the clothes have already been washed with the stain, it’s nearly impossible. I’ve tried every trick in the book for that situation, and have never had one work. Don’t bother wasting Dawn, people assume it will work and it doesn’t.

Steam cleaner?

Gatsby_Soup · 8 months ago

Steam cleaner/carpet cleaner with a degreasing soap solution. If you don't have one, you can use dish soap and water, soaking and scrubbing the soap/water into the area and using dry towels and/or a vacuum to remove as much of that water as you can, then repeating this "soak, scrub, remove" process several times.

Seconding this. The hotter the water the better, and make sure you wear gloves when handling. It melts old, polymerized oil off of almost any surface, my go-to when cleaning kitchens in new rentals. One box of this stuff will last you forever.

How to get grease / oil stains out of clothes?

Posted by Limp-Value-4259 · in r/lifehacks · 3 years ago

I accidentally got grease from a cookie on my pants. Unfortunately, the grease stain won’t come out.

I’ve tried many ways to get grease stains out but none of them seem to be effective. I’ve put salt on the pants to absorb the fresh stain- didn’t work (found that tip online). I then used Shout Stain remover on the pants, let it sit for a few hours and washed them. Still didn’t work😞

Anyone have any tips to help? I really love these pants and will do anything to save them!

Thanks in advance

Rub straight dawn into the spot. Then wash. Repeat until it's gone, THEN you can dry it.

1 upvotes on reddit
S

You can get it out still no problem. Dampen the fabric and scrub both sides with dish soap and toothbrush to get the dish soap deep into the fibres. Put the item in a plastic bag or bucket and let it sit for 24 hours. Then wash it. After washing, inspect the fabric and if there is still some oil, repeat the process until it’s completely lifted. You need to give the soap time to work though before washing.

I work with a lot of grease for my rods on my horizontal drill machine. One time I smeared so much it looked like poop pudding. I grabbed cat litter and rubbed on it, the bucket happened to be almost empty so there's was a little bit of dirt looking litter. I grabbed it and rubbed it against that part of my pants and it came off after a few tries.

Dab dry baking soda on it. It vanishes before your eyes. It helps to wash immediately after but I've done it right before wearing all day and it seems to work. I just tap my finger in the baking soda and rub it on the stain, then wipe away with any dry fabric.

Still needs some testing but so far I'm 100% successful after a handful of tries.

Me neither, until out of desperation (I dried all my favourite tshirts with a chapstick), I used vodka on grease stains.

I had some super cheap vodka left over from a party, I poured it on the spots, left if overnight, and washed them on warm. It got all of the stains out.

Dish soap never worked for me. Now, I keep a cheap bottle of clear alcohol in my laundry area.

How to remove grease stains from fabric

Here are some effective methods to remove grease stains from fabric:

  1. Act Quickly: The sooner you treat the stain, the better your chances of removing it completely.

  2. Blot, Don’t Rub: Use a clean cloth or paper towel to blot the stain gently. Rubbing can spread the grease further.

  3. Sprinkle Baking Soda or Cornstarch: Apply baking soda or cornstarch directly onto the stain to absorb the grease. Let it sit for 15-30 minutes, then brush it off.

  4. Dish Soap Solution: Mix a few drops of dish soap with warm water. Use a clean cloth to apply the solution to the stain, gently blotting it. Rinse with cold water.

  5. Use a Stain Remover: If the stain persists, apply a commercial stain remover according to the product instructions. Let it sit for the recommended time before washing.

  6. Wash as Usual: After treating the stain, wash the fabric in the hottest water safe for the material. Check the care label for guidance.

  7. Air Dry: Avoid using a dryer until you’re sure the stain is gone, as heat can set the stain. Air dry the fabric instead.

Recommendation: Always test any cleaning solution on a small, inconspicuous area of the fabric first to ensure it doesn’t cause discoloration or damage. If the stain is particularly stubborn, consider consulting a professional cleaner.
