What Redditors are Saying

Best Strategies for Finding Diamonds in Minecraft

TL;DR

  • Strip mine at Y-level 11 or below, especially around Y-level -56 post-update.
  • Explore deep caves and underwater ravines.
  • Use Fortune III enchantment for better yield.

Strip Mining Techniques

Strip mining remains one of the most popular methods for finding diamonds. Many players recommend mining at Y-level 11 [3:6], while others suggest going even deeper to Y-level -56, especially after recent updates that introduced new cave systems [5:1]. A 1x3 strip mine is efficient, and some players also use TNT at these levels to expose more ore [3:9].

Exploring Caves and Ravines

Exploring caves, particularly deepslate caves below Y-level 0, can be a fruitful strategy for finding diamonds [5:1]. Underwater ravines are another option, as they often contain exposed diamond ores [4:3]. Using night vision potions can help illuminate these areas, making it easier to spot diamonds [5:1].

Mining Behind Dirt

Some players have found success by mining dirt patches at diamond level. This tip, attributed to streamer Philza, suggests that diamonds might spawn near dirt, although this may not be universally true [4:1][4:6].

Utilizing Enchantments

Using a Fortune III enchanted pickaxe is highly recommended when mining diamonds, as it significantly increases the number of diamonds dropped from each ore [5:4]. This enchantment can make your mining efforts much more rewarding.

Alternative Methods

Switching between different mining methods can sometimes yield better results. If strip mining isn't working, try caving, or vice versa [4:4]. Additionally, exploring structures like end cities, nether fortresses, bastions, and buried treasures can occasionally provide diamonds [5:3].

Overall, persistence and adaptability are key. Trying various strategies and keeping motivated will eventually lead you to find those elusive diamonds.

ORIGINAL POST

I can find everything else but diamonds I even x-rayed for a while just to see how many diamonds any player could be passing and not even know, a tactic I am thinking about is just mining square chunks until you find some. Anyone have any other ideas?

I need help finding diamonds in minecraft, I did some thing to see how many diamonds a player could pass without knowing and what I am thinking is to just mine a chunk yourself and then just keep doing it until you find diamonds but that would be TIME TAKING, anyways to find diamonds? Redstone tactics would also be appreciated!

Some advice carry some extra pickaxes and shovels. And be sure to have a ton of torches (especially if you find a cave)

it’s a tip from Philza a twitch streamer who streams hardcore. I don’t know why but I almost half the time find diamonds behind dirt

Usually if I need a few I'll swim around in underwater ravines, making sure to note that they're at diamond-level of course.

That is a good idea! I have actually never thought to look at underwater ravines.

Try switching up your methods. Try caving if you have been strip mining or try strip mining if you have been caving. Stay motivated and I bet you will find some eventually. Good luck!

1x1 mining tunnel using trapdoor is apaprently more efficient. You don't need to light 1x1 branches either as no mob can spawn in crawl space.

Find a deepslate cave and just walk around, you'll get plenty of diamonds below y lvl 0. The deeper the better tho. If you have access to brewing night vision helps a lot.

Strip mining has been extremely ineffective since 1.17 when they added the new caves, so I would not recommend doing that. It's also incredibly boring

Strip mine at level 12

This is debatable atm. There is evidence to show diamond generation got lowered in 1.17. On java this should not have changed but on bedrock 10-12 should work fine.

Really? I can never find them in the new caves

I think it's because more ore blocks are exposed rather than surrounded by other blocks.

They did reduce the size and frequency of ores so this is to be expected. The cave systems are the best way. Otherwise try strip mining at -59

Is there a specific level under diamond level that you have the best chance at finding diamonds? Should I clear a 2x2 hallway and look for them that way?

I usually mine at 11. I believe diamonds spawn under 12 so yeah. Also, caves are good because you dont need any digging. Just luck.

I always stair down to y=12 and strip mine. I'll mine forward for 4 Iron pickaxes and then branch off of it. I'll go to the edge of my steps and go 4 Iron pickaxes both ways and gather everything. Move down 2 blocks and do it again. I find diamonds every strip.

pikachu-exe · 4 years ago

I think the most efficent way to find diamonds is basically opening 2x2 mines at y levels of 5, 7 and 11. Most people do it only at y level 11 because the lava spawns at y 10. But they miss many diamonds underneath them. Also there will be lava so bring a water bucket

1 upvotes on reddit

Fipico · 4 years ago

People mine at level 11 because thats where the most diamonds spawn, so theyre the ones missing less diamonds actually

3 upvotes on reddit
pikachu-exe · 4 years ago

That's true, but (nearly) same amounts of diamonds spawn at y level 5 and 7, so it's more efficent to mine that way.

AutomaticOcelot5194 · 4 years ago

The most effective way is to go caving at y12ish, caving because it maximises serface area you see

No strip mining is still the best most efficient way especially for big veins, in caves it's mainly singles. But if they only have an iron pickaxe with no enchants then yeah it would probably be best to cave until you get a better mining tool

They should spawn anywhere below Y level 16. They are most common around Y = -58. If you are strip mining with an iron pickaxe I would assume it will take you a bit until you find some. Probably best to cave until you get a diamond enchanted pickaxe with fortune and efficiency.

The most effective way is strip mining, but mining near large lava pools in caves may have similar luck.

1 upvotes on reddit
[deleted] · 6 years ago

Thanks! May I ask what you do when strip mining? One straight line or sections

1 upvotes on reddit
Budderman18 · 6 years ago

Usually i go at around layer 12(diamonds spawn at the highest rates+lava lakes spawn at your feet instead of head) and i make lots of infinite tunnels, 2 blocks apart. There is another, slightly more effective way but its really hard to explain in words.

Dyldando · 6 years ago

You can also use a bucket to empty out lava pools. I’ve found many diamonds and emeralds by doing so at the bottom of ravines. It’s slow work, but it works

1 upvotes on reddit
ZealousOkapiStar · 6 years ago

Almost seems safe to turn it into obsidian and then pick-ax it away. Otherwise you have to have a place to place the lava after.

2 upvotes on reddit
Dyldando · 6 years ago

You can dump all the lava into a 1x1 square. And if you mine away the obsidian, you’ll wear down your pick, in which cause you’ll need to have several. Even with mending and unbreaking

best strategies for finding diamonds in Minecraft

Here are some effective strategies for finding diamonds in Minecraft:

  1. Optimal Mining Level:

    • Diamonds are most commonly found between levels 5 and 12. Level 11 is often recommended as it minimizes lava exposure while maximizing diamond discovery.
  2. Branch Mining:

    • Create a main tunnel and then dig side branches every 2-3 blocks. This method maximizes the number of blocks you expose while minimizing the amount of mining you need to do.
  3. Cave Exploration:

    • Explore natural caves and ravines, as they often expose diamond ore. Be cautious of mobs and lava when exploring.
  4. Use Fortune Enchantment:

    • If you have a pickaxe with the Fortune enchantment, it increases the number of diamonds you can get from each ore block. Aim for Fortune III for the best results.
  5. Bring Proper Tools:

    • Use an iron pickaxe or better to mine diamond ore. Always carry extra torches, food, and weapons to protect yourself while mining.
  6. Strip Mining:

    • This involves mining in a straight line at the optimal levels, creating long tunnels that expose a lot of blocks.
  7. Netherite Mining:

    • If you have access to the Nether, mining ancient debris can be a good strategy as it can lead to finding diamonds in the Overworld when you return.

Recommendation: Combine branch mining with cave exploration for the best results. Always keep an eye on your Y-level and be prepared for lava. Using a map or coordinates can help you keep track of your mining levels effectively. Happy mining!
