TL;DR
Apple Pencil and iPad
The Apple Pencil paired with an iPad is frequently recommended for digital note-taking. Users appreciate the combination for its smooth writing experience and the ability to use various apps like Goodnotes and Onenote [1:1],
[1:4]. The iPad offers additional functionalities beyond note-taking, making it a versatile choice
[1:5]. Adding a paperlike screen protector can enhance the writing feel by mimicking paper texture
[2:6].
Supernote Lamy Ceramic Pen
The Supernote Lamy ceramic pen stands out for its exceptional writing feel, particularly noted for its interaction with the writing surface [5:1],
[5:4]. Although not compatible with all devices, users have found it to be superior in terms of tactile feedback and overall writing experience.
Boox Devices
Boox devices, such as the Boox Tab Ultra C and Boox Go 10.3, are mentioned for their handwriting recognition capabilities and compatibility with note-taking apps [4:2],
[4:5]. These devices offer features like customizable buttons and support for cloud sync, which can be beneficial for organizing notes
[2:9],
[4:3].
Considerations for Screen Type
For those concerned about writing feel, the type of screen can make a difference. Glass screens may be too slippery for some users, while plastic screens can offer better control [4:4]. Choosing a device with a Wacom pen can also improve the writing experience due to its precision and responsiveness
[4:4].
Other Recommendations
The Galaxy Tab series is another option mentioned for digital note-taking, offering a good balance between price and functionality [1:6]. Additionally, users suggest exploring different styluses based on personal preferences for weight, shape, and material feel
[5:2].
In summary, the best stylus for digital note-taking largely depends on your device preference and desired writing feel. The Apple Pencil and Supernote Lamy ceramic pen are top contenders, but exploring options like Boox devices or Galaxy Tabs might also yield satisfactory results depending on your specific needs.
Recently came across someone using the Remarkable2 in a meeting, and now I’m going down the rabbit hole. So what have you found to be the best device?
Seems like the Supernote is user friendly and doesnt require the pencil replacement tips, in comparison the Remarkable 2 is nice sized as well but why pay for the subscription service and tip replacements? Do you have better options?
My daily note taking device is my Tab S8+. But I'll check these out! Love learning about different tech
I had a supernote for a while and did like it, but remakable2 feels more like paper, and truthfully the RM2 feels better to use; the SN feels kinda cheap and plasticky imo
I got an iPad about a year ago and it's awesome for note taking
Second this. iPad with goodnotes app. It’s also nice because I can do other things with the device besides just notes
Yep, we don't have a TV and watch out shows on it. Also if you were considering it only for note taking then you don't need to go for the last most expensive ones. And if you back your files up you don't need much space on the iPad itself
So I use a Galaxy Tab S6 due to price here in Brazil.
My main use is for studying and flying (using it for maps).
The Note Taking app is the standard Samsung Notes, no complaint here, works for what I need.
I mainly have Apple products but the iPad was way too expensive for me. Everything is so similar in my opinion that depends if you have Samsung or Apple products.
iPad with paperlike screen protector and Apple Pencil or Surface Go and surface pencil. I use Onenote but am tempted to try Goodnotes given the number of recommendations.
This is a follow-up to this post.
So I succumbed, and ordered an official stylus. Here are a few pics of my tests, to give you an idea of the capabilities.
My brief impressions:
For those who have a 7, what are your first impressions?
It's great to hear some positive comments about the pen. Would love to hear more as you use it more.
w
It's certainly lighter than the Apple Pencil, but writing with it feels less like scraping a stylus and more like ... writing. I haven't had any experience with the Supernote or larger Boox devices, so maybe that's why I enjoy it more, because I'm not coming from the Wacom to a different system.
Thanks finally someone who find it usefull as a note taker, I hope I can test it soon
The smaller page size is probably the biggest limitation for taking lecture or meeting notes on a regular basis. You're adding pages really quickly. But I'm in a digital detox phase, so it's good for capturing the ADHD ideas that often derail my concentration while I'm trying to read!
I just received mine yesterday and I love it! I use it as a notebook for school and is incredible.
Really cool thanks. If you can post some video it could be great and helpful.
Thanks
I found it absolutely atrocious tbh and it's the reason it's going back. Imprecise, slow and a lot of missed and wrong inputs..
iPad pro is so much better and since the writing feel is about the same on both glass screens you'll likely want a paperlike protector in each case anyways.
I'm contemplating on a supernote nomad...
That's interesting. I also have an iPad pro, and it's certainly better for split screen notes, but for some reason I still enjoy the notes on this little one. I don't think it will be replacing the serious meeting/lecture notes any time soon, though. I've heard good things about the Nomad, so I hope you find something you can love soon! 😁
Is speed good? How are buttons ?
Speed is fine. The buttons are great for most apps - you can customise volume/scroll/page turn, although the Kindle app doesn't work with the buttons, for some reason.
Can gen2 sync book with audiobook?
In an app? Depends on the app, I think. I have some that use text to speech, and that works fine.
I've never found the need to.
I use it very often for notes and for brainstorming.
Wireframing application UI or flow. Drawing still 100% for me.
Hi all, I take a lot of handwritten notes at work, mainly during meetings, 1:1s, and for general to-do lists. My handwriting is pretty messy, and I want a device that can convert it into searchable text as accurately as possible.
I’d also like to be able to store or back up notes easily (ideally to OneDrive or another cloud service).
I’m completely new to digital notepads and tablets, so I don’t know which models are reliable or easy to use.
If you’re in a similar situation, what’s worked for you? Are there any models you’d avoid?
Thanks for any help or recommendations!
I think my BOOX Tab Ultra C does a great job deciphering my handwriting, sure it gets a few errors but over all I am very pleased
Just need to work on formatting!
I am told that one of the B brands (Bigme or Boox) has special support for OneNote. But the Android version of OneNote doesn't support handwriting recognition. You have to switch to your desktop to complete that.
There are many different ereader out there that take notes. Some use color so you can use different colors to designate different things you want to do.
If it's just short notes a 7 inch and below may work. If you take a lot of notes for meetings or class work, I would not get anything smaller than a 10 inch screen.
For me my hand writing is sloppy. An ereader with a glass screen makes it worse. It's too slippery, so I use one with a plastic screen.
For decent writing you also want to make sure it has a wacom pen,
If it's only going to be used as an note taking device, you can use one that doesn't have a front light. However if you think you might read on it for pleasure in a dark room . Make sure it has a front light.
To use onedrive or any other cloud services I would recommend an android device over a Kindle or kobo.
Look at the different features you think you need, then find a device that you think will meet your needs. Then watch a few youtube videos to see if it will work for you.
All ereader will have some of features you want, and some you wish it had, none are going to be perfect.
Hi. Will be used mainly for work note taking, so 10 inch minimum and no reading in dark room
One that comes to mind then is the boox 10.3, it has one of the better note apps
Boox go 10.3?
Viwoods ai ?
I am currently using viwoods and was wondering which stylus you guys recommend for the best writing feel? Thank you in advance.
Can you specify what you mean by "writing feel"?
Do you mean the interaction of the nib with the writing surface? The output you see on screen? The latency? The weight of the stylus? The shape of the stylus? The way the stylus material feels in your hand?
Sorry, I'm a fountain pen enthusiast and in that space there's a difference between "writes smoothly" and "smooth writing feel" :P
Personally I really prefer the reMarkable 2's pro marker. The problem though, is that the AI Paper works best with the Viwoods stylus because they've tuned the stylus interaction with tablet. I've tried the rM2 pro marker, the Lamy EMR and the Samsung S-pen. None of those get treated the same as the Viwoods stylus, so the nuance of the line on the screen is gone.
So I've made the choice to use the Viwoods stylus and ignore how it feels in my hand, because I like the way it makes my writing look on screen.
I've only very shortly tested Supernote's ceramic tip and that was on a Supernote device. It has a specific feel, but it's not what I want from an e-ink tablet, it skates over the surface too much for my liking.
I have no experience with the titanium tips people advertise regularly.
You answered my question thank you for taking the time and giving me your experience. Very helpful.
I've used them all and the best one for me is the Supernote Lamy ceramic pen. It's not even close. Not compatible with the Viwoods but you might be able to use the Lamy EMR for a similar feel in the hand.
I've been thinking about getting the feel of it. Let's see if I might be able to use it. Thank you.
Supernote Lamy pen with ceramic nib
Got the Norris digital today, was using wacom one as the primary stylus for quite some time. From the initial impressions, the pencil like design feels better to me (tbh, i bought it just for the aesthetics :3).
How is the writing experience with noris compared to Wacom one I planning to buy a alternate stylus but confused between them
I have the noris jumbo version and it works excellent, there is no lag and the eraser works well
I used it on my s7+ and currently on the s10 ultra and without any problems.
norris digital lacks a button (wacom one has), which I use as an eraser (as mentioned, jumbo has that feature) but, overall, i like it's pencil like feeling.
eraser on top and easy nibs to find on amazon ... great choice.
If you have the chance..
Kindle scribe premium pen.
Imo it beats noris
Can confirm. Gifted the new Kindle Scribe to my wife and looking at the pen i thought about trying it on my Tab... I can say with 100% confidence that it is one of the best pens around. Everything works, eraser, button, etc. Will be using it more often
Got it. Thank you very much. I am new to digital writing so trying to understand how to improve writing on the screen.
does it use the same tips as a normal samsung pen ?
I dont think so. Spen is too flimsy, and wacom is stiff (stock) this is somewhere in between in my experience. The pen does come with a few extra nibs
Do you use any paper like a display screen protector?
off topic but i'm really curious...
what's that little ipod nano like device in the top left corner of the picture?
I’m not an artist so I don’t see the need for the pressure sensitivity or double tap. I just want a strong attaching stylus that charges on the iPad, ideally one that shows up in the battery widgets and connects automatically like the Apple Pencil although I know they are a little harder to find. But that’s it, because I’m mainly going to use it for Notes, PDF markup and Obsidian. I’d love to know what everyone else is using.
Logitech crayon 🖍️
I didn’t think that connected or charged magnetically.
So you don’t think the Apple brand stylus that’s designed for iPad and to magnetically attach isn’t that strong and a reason for shopping secondhand, but expect that out of a 3rd party?
Yeah but, It has all the features of Apple Pencil and works even better
Just out of curiosity, why not Apple Pencil?
I don’t really need all the features so I don’t want to spend all of the money. Since I’m just using it primarily for note taking, I’d like to find a good third party one. Don’t get me wrong I’d love a second gen but they’re expensive and the magnets aren’t that good and I can’t help but feel that I’d lose it.
Huh. Okay.
What’s your budget? I’m seeing a ton of used Apple Pencil 2 in my area going for $50-$70.
just buy the apple pencil. literally. i cannot think of any other stylus to use. buy once cry once, but honestly i have not regretted the apple pencil once. its almost as much money to get something with less features and no native support. don’t be cheap with something you’re going to use often.
I think at best you will find less expensive pencils that ATTACH magnetically, but I don’t believe you’ll find ANY that CHARGE magnetically. Usually they charge via a USB-C cable. But the charge lasts a long time so you don’t have to charge often.
You do need to be careful but there are lots of them that charge magnetically, Apple have changed the layout though so it will depend on the iPad too. The GD13 & Baseus Gen 2/3 for example will do magnetic charging on models that support the Apple Pencil 2.
goojodoq! such good dupes
Definitely the best copies. I tried a few with all sorts of issues before getting to this brand and now it's my go to reccomendation and I haven't heard any complaints yet.
Finally got a tablet and am just wondering out of all the available apps (free or with a subscription) if anyone would recommend one as a best option? I have started to use notability but before I purchase a subscription I wanted to just see if anyone has been using something else or similar for the long term now and that it blends well with Japanese note taking.
I have a Samsung Tab and I Love Notein, can upload pdf and sync with other devices. All the scencial features are free so you can give it a try and see if you like it
Notability is good but there’s no one-time payment. I’ve been using Element Note on my iPad, which is 15 AUD iirc. You can install fonts on the iPad and use it there. I use it a lot for practicing kanji handwriting.
Hello! So I tried out some pens. The included one is great but too thin for my hands. I tried the Staedtler Noris Jumbo, but I found the tip too slippery. The HP x360 11 pen is just great! Quite ergonomic, light, compatible with boox tips (which have a bit more natural drag than HP ones) and it’s dirt cheap (£9.99 on eBay!). Just thought I’d post this here to hear from fellow users what that use!
Does it have an button for erase? does it work?
The back bit is the eraser and yes it works!
My favorite is still the Lamy EMR. So far, I never had a better feeling when writing or drawing with another stylus.
Great! I really want to try the Lamy yes
Agreed. Lamy EMR is superb
Where can I buy a Lamy emr in the US?
What is that template?
You can find tons here: https://incompetech.com/graphpaper/
A custom template, will PM it! Edit: I think these are here: https://www.mobileread.com/forums/showthread.php?t=309863
Thank you!
Thanks!! I’ll check back in :)
best stylus for digital note taking
Key Considerations for Choosing a Stylus for Digital Note Taking:
Compatibility: Ensure the stylus is compatible with your device (iPad, Android tablet, etc.). Some styluses work only with specific models.
Pressure Sensitivity: Look for a stylus with good pressure sensitivity (4096 levels is ideal) for a more natural writing experience, allowing for varied line thickness.
Tip Material: A fine tip (around 0.5mm) provides precision, while a softer tip can offer a more comfortable feel. Consider your preference for writing style.
Palm Rejection: Choose a stylus that supports palm rejection technology, allowing you to rest your hand on the screen while writing without interference.
Battery Life: If the stylus requires charging, check the battery life. Some styluses offer long usage times (up to 20 hours) on a single charge.
Additional Features: Look for features like customizable buttons for shortcuts, tilt support for shading, and eraser functionality.
Recommendations:
Apple Pencil (2nd Generation): Best for iPad users, it offers excellent pressure sensitivity, palm rejection, and seamless integration with iPadOS. It also has a magnetic charging feature.
Samsung S Pen: Ideal for Galaxy Note and Galaxy Tab users, it provides great precision, pressure sensitivity, and comes with additional features like Bluetooth functionality.
Microsoft Surface Pen: Perfect for Surface device users, it offers a natural writing experience with tilt support and customizable buttons.
Adonit Note+: A good alternative for various tablets, it features pressure sensitivity and a fine tip, making it suitable for detailed note-taking.
