TL;DR
Apple iPad
The iPad is a popular choice for digital note-taking among students, especially when paired with the Apple Pencil. Users praise its long battery life, high-quality display, and smooth writing experience [1:1]
[1:3]. The iPad Air is often recommended as it offers a balance between performance and cost
[4:1]. Apps like GoodNotes and Notability are frequently mentioned for their robust features, including PDF handling and organization capabilities
[1:2]
[2:6].
Samsung Galaxy Tab
Samsung's Galaxy Tab series, particularly the S8 and S7+, are also recommended for note-taking. These tablets offer versatile functionality, allowing users to import PDFs, clip diagrams, and insert photos into notes [2:7]
[1:8]. They come with a pen and have been noted for their long battery life
[1:9].
ReMarkable Tablet
For those who prefer an e-ink display, the reMarkable tablet is highlighted for its exceptional battery life and paper-like writing experience. It supports various file types and includes features like handwriting-to-text conversion [5:1]. However, some users have reported issues with software stability
[2:2].
Additional Considerations
When choosing a tablet for note-taking, consider your specific needs such as screen size and additional functionalities. Larger screens, like the 12.9-inch iPad Pro, can provide a more paper-like experience but may be bulkier [3:3]. For those who prioritize battery life over multifunctionality, e-ink devices might be preferable
[2:1]. Additionally, using a paper-like screen protector can enhance the writing feel on traditional tablets
[3:2].
Hello, I’m a Chem major in university and just finished first semester. I’ve used like 6 notebooks and it’s very time consuming to take notes, especially in organic.
I feel that a tablet for note taking would be very productive, but I don’t know which to buy.
I’m looking for something with good
Any recommendations are appreciated Thanks! :)
Someone already mentioned it but iPads are really good and are pretty popular. I was taking all my notes by hand for the first three semesters before switching to a tablet(Bio major) and it’s amazing. I have a 10th gen iPad with the Apple Pencil to go with it.
Battery last all day for both the tablet at pencil. Screen quality is also really good. It was weird at first getting used to writing but after awhile it’s really smooth. Lots of people use Goodnotes but I don’t wanna pay for a subscription so I found CollaNote. I just downloaded my lecture PowerPoints and open it up in the app easy peasy. Microsoft OneNote is another free alternative I know some people use.
Now the iPad and Pencil combo are quite pricey but a lot of students forget that there’s a lot of discounts for students, that’s how I got mine at a reduced price.
Notability is another good app for note taking on the iPad. It isn’t free, but the price is reasonable.
i’m going to have to check out collanotes! I’m also a bio/chem major and have an ipad. I couldn’t figure out how to organize my notes well so I mostly use it to read but writing on powerpoint slides would definitely help me a lot!
Definitely give it a try! It’s not as fancy as Notability or Goodnotes but I found it really easy to use. It doesn’t have a limit for how many pdfs/powerpoints you can download and draw on which was a massive plus for me
I 100% agree I have the same iPad and pen combo. I think the iPad has really helped me organize my notes as well! It’s very user friendly. I would try to get the discount as well, and normally, Apple has these deals running until school goes back in session. When I bought my iPad, I ended up getting a free Apple Pencil, due to the gift card that they gave me for buying the iPad.
I recently switched to a tablet for note-taking in my Chem courses, and it's been a game-changer. For your needs, I'd recommend the iPad Air with the Apple Pencil. It has great battery life, an amazing display, and handles PDFs and other files like a champ. Pairing it with Afforai has made organizing and summarizing my research a breeze. Good luck!
I’ll go ahead and say the iPad, I have an iPad Air 5 64gb with an Apple Pencil and it lasts me all day and charges pretty fast. I also use an app called Goodnotes that is great for importing my textbooks and other pdfs, and can easily export notes to pdfs to send to your email too. They are pretty pricey, but I decided to splurge since I use it for other things and am planning to hand it down to my sister when I no longer need it.
I like Samsung's Tab tablets. You can import PDFs into its note software. The files there can also be saved into several formats such as PDF and Word. And if you're bad at drawing like I am, you clip in diagrams and pictures from the book or PowerPoint and while able to resize the picture and write notes on them. You can also insert photos taken with the tablet into the notes as well.
Galaxy s9 fe+ comes with a pen and the thing last like 3 days charged if only use it for notes
What are your recommedations for a digital notebook? I'm searching for either a tablet or digital notebook for education purposes. Must haves would be changing correcting handwriting to a decent looking readable text. A multifunctional tablet would be a bonus but no requirement.
Thanks in advance.
I use iPad pro 2nd gen and Apple pencil 2, they work wonderfully for me so much that I have almost left using paper.
I use an 12.9 2nd gen and an ipad mini 6 both with paper like screen protectors which helps with the lack of friction when writing.
I did own a remarkable, it was perfect to write on but the software/hardware was really glitchy and i had to return it as it just didn't work which was a shame and it was hard to send back.
What app do you use to write notes and to store Them?
Any iPad with Apple pencil support + Notability for note taking + Concepts for mind mapping.
Check out the Samsung Galaxy Tab S8 or Tab A8. Multiple versions of each.
I have the prior version S7+ and absolutely love it. I write notes all day, and check emails, surf the web, watch shows etc. Brilliant tablet.
I just got the most cheap one and I love it. I have a samsing tab 6 lite, it's great. I use it a lot, and I don't need anything more powefull.
What is your budget? For only notes i would advice you to go with a e-ink device because it has a better battery life then a ipad etc. but if you like to do more then i would get a ipad.
Are tablets for note taking worth it? (money is not a problem I think) Is there more money that needs to be spent after the tablet is bought? Also, I want to use this mainly for my organic chemistry, biochemistry, math, and biology academic classes at Berkeley. Thank you in advance for your help.
I invested in a tablet recently and I think it's worth it. I used to take notes with paper and pen and I liked the feeling of a notebook too much to give it up, but printing out worksheets and trying to take notes with powerpoints became a bit of a pain. I'm taking bio and ochem right now and my tablet makes my life a lot easier for submitting worksheet assignments. It also cut down on the weight of having a bunch of notebooks in my backpack when I want to go study. I did buy this paperlike screen protector to give it a "notebook" feel.
Thank you!
If you can afford it, buy it. It is absolutely great.
Make sure you buy a tablet with big screen. I have iPad 12.9 and it is so much better than the small one because it is like writing on A4 paper without having to zoom in. After you buy it, you might need to buy an apple pencil, note taking app (e.g. goodnotes), screen protector for writing (e.g. paperlike - I prefer this because it makes the screen less slippery), and tablet case.
My iPad helps me be very organized. All my readings, slides, homework, discussion worksheets, and notes are in one place. I can easily search my handwritten notes. Writing and submitting homework is also much easier. No need to scan anything and you can copy each problem statement on one page and write solution below it without having to look back at the worksheet.
Thank you!
If you’re going to be taking ochem, you’ll be doing a lot of mechanism arrows. It is just easier to take notes on a tablet and it’s much more organized than paper in my opinion.
It is also great for notes in other classes. I always envied those who had tablets in math bc I make so many mistakes in math and by the time I erased 20 times , my paper was wrinkly. Now, I feel so much better after using it.
I love how you literally add pictures or diagrams right next to your notes too
Thank you!
Yes. It eliminates clutter since all your notes are in the tablet. Note taking apps also let you drag whatever you wrote to other areas on the page as well as shrink or expand things that you wrote.
Thank you!
yes i’ve definitely gotten my moneys worth
Thank you!
Would you recommend an iPad for college? If so, which one? Which app is the best for note taking?
I can’t stand typing on iPads.
I think a 13 inch notebook computer with long, long battery life would be better. No more than 3 lbs weight. Check independent reviews.
Hey there! Choosing the right setup for digital note-taking can really impact your study efficiency. An iPad can definitely be a game-changer in college, offering portability and a paper-like experience.
As for which iPad, the iPad Air is a solid choice—powerful enough for most tasks, but without the Pro's price tag. The standard iPad is also good as a more budget friendly option.
For note-taking apps, it really depends on your needs. GoodNotes and Notability are popular for their handwriting experience and organization features. If you prefer typing, consider apps like OneNote or Evernote, which also sync across devices. Experiment to see what clicks with your workflow. To complement your note-taking, consider turning your notes into active recall questions using an AI-powered tool to really solidify the information. You can check out SuperKnowva to create interactive questions from your notes, I initially created it to help with my own study struggles and it has helped a lot of students in similar situations.
Best of luck finding the perfect setup for your studies!

Currently a senior chem major. I have used my iPad Pro since high school, and it works very well. I have the 12.9 inch, but that is honestly really big and a smaller one would work just as well. The battery life is only now starting to suffer (I got it 5 years ago). Apple pencil connects/charges easily.
I had a reMarkable e-ink tablet that I used religiously in grad school. It has the same sort of display as a kindle paperwhite, so extremely long battery life. It doesn't have an internet browser, but you can send documents as one of various file types via email. Lots of features, including highlighter and markers in a couple of different colors for when you view it on a different screen, handwriting-to-text conversion, plenty of document background varieties (college ruled, yellow legal pad, plain white, graph of various sizes, perspective, sheet music, guitar tabs, etc) that could be useful even outside of school, and it's a joy to write on.
Very cool thanks
I'm very inclined towards handwritten notes, but the sheer amount of paper and time spent flipping through notes is becoming inefficient, so I want to switch to digital while still having that pencil & paper notetaking feel.
I'm looking for a tablet that has the following characteristics:
Feels good to write on & handwriting into text conversion
Access to full Microsoft Office suite (Excel, PP, Word) along with internet access obviously
Keyboard & mouse/trackpad compatibility
If anyone has recommendations or suggestions, I'd really appreciate it. Thanks in advance.
You should look into getting an iPad, there are even keyboard cases you can attach to also type up notes and papers as well
Definitely high on the consideration list, along with Galaxy S9 FE, reMarkable 2, and MS Surface Pro (not sure what generation).
The remarkable is good, but I would recommend a box of you are going eink. More flexibility for college
I’m gonna go against the grain here and say keep your habdwritten notes. You’ll miss the feeling of writing on paper. And idk about you, but I like flipping thru my papers rather than looking for files on my computer. Disclaimer: I’ve used an iPad to take notes
iPad 100% - if you're worried about price (1) the base iPad is probably cheaper than you expect and (2) you can probably get a good deal on a used or refurbished iPad. Make sure you remember to factor in the separate cost of the Apple Pencil though. Also you can get screen protectors which mimic the feel of paper, but they will wear down the tip of your pencil.
I love the paper screen protectors! Game changer
I never owned one, but I've used iPads and windows tablets, and I gotta say: windows tables suck
Nintendo DS Lite Pictochat
they said notetaking not rizzing
Looking into a tablet/iPad for note taking that can:
- write/highlight text in diff colours
- Has word search to easily find parts of my notes
- convert to google docs
- feels good to write with, "like paper" / doesn't make my hand writing super messy etc lol

Budget option is the galaxy tab 9 fe I think it’s called, best option is an iPad Pro gen 6 or above. Both will do the job, one of them will be a bit nicer if you can afford it. Don’t go for e-ink devices, the screen breaks too easy, had that issue.
thank you! i was actually looking at some e-ink ones so thats good to know :) i noticed most dont have color font at all anyway
I just got myself a galaxy tab 9 fe and I’m obsessed!
Do you think it would be ‘hard’ to use if I’m not familiar with android?
Answered
Well it depends on your budget. What phone do you have etc.
I choose 2nd handed Samsung Galaxy tab s6 lite and I'm pretty happy with it. I have paper like foil which eats tips pretty fast but I will be buying metal ones.
Other stuff you are mentioning: you can write and it will change to normal font but It wasn't perfectly accurate. It will let you make Google docs from it or find text in it. Otherwise if you would like to keep your notes handwritten it isn't possible without 3rd party software like paperless or smith else. But you can export in pdf which is enough.
Best tablet? Depends on your preferences. If you have apple phone pick some ipad pro 2024. If you have android pick Samsung Galaxy tab s10 ultra. These are tops but pricey af.
But as I mentioned I have Samsung s6 lite which is the cheapest tab for note taking I found and I am pretty happy. It lags times to times when switching apps but the note taking is really nice.
ty!!
Starting my new position next week and I’m considering getting the iPad 11th gen 128mb with the Apple pen for note-taking and managing my work while moving around the office. I expect to mostly work with the usual file types, with .pptx files being the largest. Also expect to be cloud-based on OneDrive.
I’d welcome any advice, experience, what worked for you, what do you use now for tablets? Looking to stay within reasonable cost but keeping efficiency in mind.
Also would love to hear what your favorite note-taking apps and methods of summarizing are (AI is a plus in this realm).
ETA: I’d be buying this with my own money as a personal luxury/upgrade from my usual mode of notebook/phone/company laptop.
I never was able to commit to note taking on the iPad. It didn’t feel right to me. Notebook, fine…laptop, fine…phone, not ideal but works in a pinch. I just found the functionality want quite where I needed it for me.
If in a MS environment with OneDrive and SharePoint, I'd go with a Surface Pro over an iPad. Maybe your new company already issues Surface Pros. I'd just use my laptop as there's no benefit to me in having a tablet as well, but that's just me.
I do not use AI at all for meetings as I need actual minutes and not summaries.
Are you buying this with your own money?
Is it necessary? I use a notebook and pen. Or just bring my (office supplied) laptop with me to meetings.
With my own money because it’s not a necessity, although if they did offer a stipend I’d definitely reimburse myself. I’ve lived off of notebooks my entire career and at my last company I used my company laptop when possible but usually worked off my phone and notebook, which is doable but has its limitations. This is more of a personal luxury/upgrade and something that isn’t a laptop (I’m not sure if I’ll have a stationary set up in my office workspace).
I would love this but not allowed for a lot of the calls we are in. Interested to see what you end up purchasing.
Favorite note taking AI based app is Grain.com, but it is optimized for video calls on Zoom/Teams/Google Meet.
For AI based transcription you can do on your phone, Otter.ai is the best, although they're in the news lately for privacy violations, so be wary.
Favorite tablet notetaking device is the Remarkable. Much better writing surface and battery life compared to an iPad, plus a lot cheaper.
Recently came across someone using the Remarkable2 in a meeting, and now I’m going down the rabbit hole. So what have you found to be the best device?
Seems like the Supernote is user friendly and doesnt require the pencil replacement tips, in comparison the Remarkable 2 is nice sized as well but why pay for the subscription service and tip replacements? Do you have better options?
I got an iPad about a year ago and it's awesome for note taking
Second this. iPad with goodnotes app. It’s also nice because I can do other things with the device besides just notes
Yep, we don't have a TV and watch out shows on it. Also if you were considering it only for note taking then you don't need to go for the last most expensive ones. And if you back your files up you don't need much space on the iPad itself
iPad with paperlike screen protector and Apple Pencil or Surface Go and surface pencil. I use Onenote but am tempted to try Goodnotes given the number of recommendations.
I had a supernote for a while and did like it, but remakable2 feels more like paper, and truthfully the RM2 feels better to use; the SN feels kinda cheap and plasticky imo
So I use a Galaxy Tab S6 due to price here in Brazil.
My main use is for studying and flying (using it for maps).
The Note Taking app is the standard Samsung Notes, no complaint here, works for what I need.
I mainly have Apple products but the iPad was way too expensive for me. Everything is so similar in my opinion that depends if you have Samsung or Apple products.
My daily note taking device is my Tab S8+. But I'll check these out! Love learning about different tech
I am just going to use it for writing notes, memos, reminders ( not for drawing). Appreciate if you guys could provide some input
Supernote A6 X2 is in pre-order and you may be interested in the smaller size. But check out www.ewritable.com for all the devices out there, and see if you can narrow down some of the other pressures you might need.
I am looking for a digital notebook that will replace my a4 paper notepad. I dont want to type, but want to write my notes ( like pen and paper). Appreciate your response
Ah then you definitely want something larger lol. I don't know too much about 13" tablets, which seems like the right size for you, but you can look at all the info on the site I linked
I was just on their website and couldn’t find anything about the pre-order status
It's now in production and order fulfillment times are normal
I love my reMarkable 2 it has just the right amount of friction, making it feel like I'm writing on actual paper.
I also own a Remarkable 2, and it's the only device I've used that truly feels like writing on paper.
Remarkable 2 is the way to go. LOVE it. I have not written on any piece of paper or paper notebook. This is the best.
Does it require the description or does it work fine without?
I LOVE the RM2 as a note taker, journal, client note for my coaching, and reading PUB files of books.
However there is no “alarm” capabilities for reminders. RM2 is basically the same as a regular notebook. You want a place to take notes. This is it. You want an alert? Nope.
Thanks for your response. Ideally I am looking to replace my A4 size paper notepad, so interested in something with the same writing feel and size.
Best tablets for digital note taking
Key Considerations for Digital Note-Taking Tablets
Screen Size and Resolution: A larger screen (10 inches or more) with high resolution (at least 1920 x 1080) enhances readability and provides ample space for writing and drawing.
Stylus Support: Look for tablets that support active styluses for a more natural writing experience. Some tablets come with their own stylus, while others require a separate purchase.
Battery Life: A tablet with long battery life (8 hours or more) is essential for extended note-taking sessions without needing to recharge.
Operating System: Consider whether you prefer iOS (iPad), Android, or Windows, as this will affect the apps available for note-taking.
App Ecosystem: Ensure the tablet supports popular note-taking apps like Notability, GoodNotes, or Microsoft OneNote, which can enhance your note-taking experience.
Storage Options: Depending on your needs, choose a tablet with sufficient storage (at least 64GB) to hold your notes, documents, and apps.
Recommendations:
Apple iPad Pro (11-inch or 12.9-inch): Offers excellent performance, a high-resolution display, and supports the Apple Pencil for precise note-taking. The iPad ecosystem has a wide range of note-taking apps.
Samsung Galaxy Tab S8: A great Android option with a vibrant display, S Pen included, and solid battery life. It’s perfect for those who prefer the Android environment.
Microsoft Surface Pro 8: A versatile Windows tablet that functions as a laptop. It supports the Surface Pen and is ideal for users who want a full desktop experience along with note-taking capabilities.
Apple iPad (9th Generation): A more budget-friendly option that still supports the Apple Pencil and offers a solid note-taking experience with a good selection of apps.
Choose based on your preferred ecosystem and specific needs for note-taking!
