TL;DR
Tablets vs. Laptops for Graphic Design
Many professional designers emphasize that laptops or desktops are generally preferred over tablets for graphic design due to their superior performance, file management capabilities, and compatibility with Adobe software [1:1],
[1:2]. Tablets are often used as secondary devices for sketching or illustration rather than primary tools for comprehensive design work
[4:1],
[4:3].
iPad Pro for Drawing and Illustration
The iPad Pro is frequently mentioned as an excellent device for drawing, particularly when paired with the Apple Pencil [1:4],
[5:1]. The app Procreate, which is exclusive to iOS, is popular among artists for its robust features and ease of use
[5:1]. However, there are limitations when it comes to running full versions of Adobe software on the iPad
[3:3].
Wacom Tablets for Professional Use
For those looking for a more traditional graphic design tablet, Wacom offers reliable options that are well-regarded in the industry [1:7],
[3:6]. These tablets can be connected to a computer and used with a stylus, offering precision and control for detailed design work.
Microsoft Surface Pro for Versatility
The Microsoft Surface Pro is suggested as a versatile option that combines the portability of a tablet with the power of a laptop [4:2]. This makes it a suitable choice for those who need a device that can handle both design tasks and general computing needs.
Considerations for Budget-Conscious Buyers
For students or those on a budget, older models of the iPad Pro or entry-level Wacom tablets might be worth considering [3:5],
[5:2]. These can offer good value while still providing the necessary functionality for graphic design tasks.
I've been thinking of getting a tablet, mainly for drawing but I want to do some graphic design stuff on it (photoshop/indesign) and maybe work on my personal website with it. I didn't see anyone asking this question right off so: What is the best tablet for design work/drawing?
I've googled it but it's so hard to tell what's sponsored now, but it looks like most sites list Ipads as number one with Samsung and the cheaper Windows tablets following up, does anyone use these?
thanks for any tablet advice!
The question actually gets asked a lot here, and the answer is most designers don't use tablets for design. I know tons of designers and most don't even own a tablet, much less use it for their work.
Why? Because everyone working in the field has a laptop or desktop, and if you have that, it's going to be superior for using Adobe (the apps are different on tablets), file storage and transfer, and all the other ways a laptop is more robust and useful than a tablet.
My question when a newer designer asks about a tablet is always, "Why do you want to use a tablet for graphic design?" And the answer is never because they heard or saw other designers using it, which is really all the answer you need.
I know this is an old post but I don’t want to make a new one since as you said, that Q gets asked a lot.
Personally, I want a tablet bc this would be a side hobby for me and I’m just trying to get my feet wet without spending a ton of money. Thoughts on how I should go about picking a tablet or something similar?
I understand but I don't have any answers. I know lots of designers but none of them use a tablet for design. They never would.
You've never heard of a graphic designer using a tablet either – because it's just not done. My only advice no matter whether it's a hobby or something more that you want to do is to buy a laptop powerful enough for design work.
If you have the ability, go to a Best Buy or Apple Store and ask for a demo of something like InDesign or Illustrator. You'll see tons of limitations, and you'll realize what you're hoping for isn't realistic.
What kind of laptop would you recommend then?
I've been interested in a tablet because I like the idea of using a stylus to draw and be more hand on. But I think I just don't know enough about what my options are. I'm not looking to make a big career out of graphic design but I'd like to be able to do high quality work when I want.
I understand your preference/desire to use a stylus. But still – no designer uses a tablet as their primary design tool.
I've used Macs only for over 30 years. I have almost no PC knowledge. So I'm not an unbiased person to ask, but I would recommend a MacBook Pro M2.
Surface for what you want probably
iPad Pro is amazing for just drawing, but the graphic design and dev stuff on it isn’t going to be as good
It depends on what else you’re working with. Microsoft is OK but if you already have another Mac you’d be missing out on a very efficient workflow—esp when using AirDrop and Adobe. Also, the latest Apple Pencil is far better than any other tool when it comes to lag and distance from the interface. It’s so close to analog.
Have you decided on a tablet yet? I'm considering this Wacom Intuos Pro for its versatility in design and drawing.
I hear you on the confusion! Have you checked out this pen display? It seems like a solid choice for both drawing and design work.
Hi, il try to keep it brief. So basically I’ve got a LOT of business ideas in my head, most of them pushing towards a full brand. My only problem is I’ve hired about 4 different designers up to now, and every single one of them is perfect; until they receive payment, then their ideas turn to mush and they start trying to pass me clipart standard graphics for £50-150 per time.. At this point I’ve wasted just under £500, and rather than spend anymore on these digital cowboys, I am looking to get myself a cheap(ish) tablet, that I can use to draw freehand, or generate graphics and place them together to create images etc..
I have got quite a few designs I’d like to do; but I need something that can; Create vectors/graphics Create wordart Basic graphic editing (crop, flip, bg remove etc) Content creation for social media posts and stuff like this.. not state of the art, but a bit more advanced than the usual cheap browsing tablet..
Does anyone have any suggestions for brands etc to look out for? Budget is currently around £200-300, although I am not against buying second hand etc if it means I can finally get these done, as the designs are the only things needed for my launch..
Thanks in advance for any help 🙂
The only benefit to having a tablet is to allow you to transfer any drawings skills you’ve developed, direct to software, without scanning traditional pieces. A mouse can pretty much handle a lot of design needs, as a lot of the digital operations you mention don’t require drawing skills. If you still want to get one, Wacom have a good reputation for hardware, but you could use almost any budget brand + entry model
The only reason I was looking at a tablet, is because they’re portable so I can use my commute times to multitask and get some design work etc done..
I always seem to disregard laptops/desktops for design for some reason.. would you say a laptop would perform better? Obviously with the utilities etc like drawing pad as you mentioned?
Il be honest I have quite a lot of experience with canva, but it lacks freehand options, and because my artistic skills ain’t as good as required, my plan was to just print templates of the stuff I want to draw, and draw over them on tablet/stylus.. freehand digital art is a completely new thing for me, but with how many business ideas I go through, I am keen to learn myself, even if basic, just so I can have a rough idea for my plans and see if it makes sense to spend the money on expensive design work sort of thing
If you have your heart set on one, go for it; a mouse would be technically more portable, and the majority of design software functions can be accomplished using one, even faster when you learn keyboard shortcuts for various software.
My friend is selling his tablet for moving out, she used it for 6 months and it is in a great condition without any damage and comes with its original box. You can check it out: https://ebay.us/m/YSB5MN
Guys please suggest tablets for graphic design under budget (I'm a student so I really need GOOD but affordable options)
either. I personally like iPad Pro. it's what I have. screen is bigger, and I believe Procreate is only for iPad( but don't quote me on this). it's also nice that can airdrop a file/images to my MacBook Pro without having to email it or put it in g-drive/box/dropbox.
Which gen?
fuck I don't remember what mine is. I'm so fuckin lazy to find out haha. my guess is gen 2. got that mofo (love it) back in 2021 or '22. my memory is shot dawg :(
As your primary/only device or in addition to a proper computer/laptop?
I do have a smoothly functioning laptop, but I was planning to buy it as my primary, only device
Apple tablets can’t run Adobe software.
I just got a used iPad on Amazon for procreate. Also had it on my old iPad but it was time for an upgrade. iPad Pro 11 3rd gen
Wacom has some pretty good cheap options.
A good windows machine will be cheaper rhan a decent mac. I don’t know any tablets that have the horsepower for real design work. Especially any that are affordable.
I am a first year graphic design student and I am in the market for a new laptop/iPad. I was just wondering if anyone could share their advice on what devices are the current best for purely graphic design purposes. Thankyou
Despite some advances, we're still a little ways off being able to design fully using tablets. Any mid range laptop will do. The Microsoft Surface Pro offers some tablet functionality while still being a full laptop.
I haven’t had a great experience using the iPad for real design work due to the inability to easily manage fonts. I know the iPad seems appealing but it’s always a waste of money everytime I try to integrate it in my work flow.
I’d go with laptop/desktop. The iPad currently only acts as an accessory for drafting and light edits to photos.
Yeah I think I’m leaning more towards a mac, I was imaging certain things like that would be more difficult if I only had an iPad but Thankyou
IMac. I’ve been working with my current one since 2013. Work horse.
The new Mac M1s have what you need. Fairly affordable too if you get a Mac mini.
Would you suggest the air or the pro, or does that not really matter as much
Doesn't matter. Just make sure you get the ram upgrade.
What kind of tablet should I get for design?
Most designers don't use tablets as their primary design tool. Laptops are by far the #1 tool of designers, often connected to additional monitors for increased screen real estate. Desktop computers are used for design as well. The use of tablets is growing, though at this point they are much more commonly used for sketching, illustration, and for displaying work to clients than for actual doing actual design. Animators, hand letterers, and photo retouchers are likely to use tablets for their work as well.
I want one with a screen but I don’t know what brand to get. If anyone has any recommendations or advice on how to choose one, that would be wonderful!
Definitely get an iPad. You can get older ipad pro models pretty cheap but if you have the funds get the new one!
Thanks for the advice
I know my Graphic Design instructor LOVES and highly recommends ProCreate on the iPad. I hope that helps you
Thanks! It does!
Hello all i am new to the group, hope my post is allowed here as it is on the border of drawing but not drawing as there is some technique needed for it. A lot of talented individuals out there with some beautiful drawings. I want to be able to mess around on a graphics tablet doing similar designs for example pencil work, shading, adding colour or watercolour to an image.
I will be saving up for whatever beat options are recommended, I dont mind a more expensive tablet as il save up for it eventually. Thanks to anyone here who has took the time to read and possibly help me out, this will be a part time hobby for me as nowadays I dont use a pen/pencil much for anything other than bills or filling in forms. I want to avoid wasting any spare time on TV and take up a new hobby and get myself doing something productive 🙂. Have a nice Christmas all and thanks for reading
One of the higher end models of Huion tablets (what I currently use) with a screen or the brand XPPen has been recommended by some YouTube digital artists. Range: $2-300
Those are some of the best quality but for beginners or if you don't mind a screen there are some inexpensive ones that produce quality results for under 50 in the Huion brand.
Thanks for the reply! Il have a look! It may be a better solution in terms of cost Vs an iPad. I did have an iPad a few years ago but the screen shattered and I just didn't want to pay the money to have it repaired. I know they're really good for everything but didn't even consider art/design like the other commenter suggested. I seem to be aiming towards the Huion tablet currently so will do a bit of research 👍
Yeah, I bought an iPad about a year ago just so I could use Procreate. I use a Huion on my MacBook with Krita, Sketchbook and Blender.
iPad, Apple Pencil and Procreate. It's so enjoyable that it will make you want to draw just so you can use it.
Thanks for the reply! Is that any iPad in particular?
I bought a new iPad Air nearly two years ago. I'd never owned an Apple product before, but I went with one that had a decent screen size and wasn't outrageously expensive. I don't use it for anything else.
If money hadn't been a consideration, I would have bought an iPad Pro because of the larger screen size. I often use a split screen so I can have Pinterest open on one side as a reference and Procreate on the other. The Air is perfectly serviceable for this, but obviously a bigger screen would be more convenient.

Hi, I am sort of getting in to graphic design and digital art, and I was wondering what tablets are recommended? I'm having a hard time understanding what exactly I should be looking for, as I am fairly inexperienced.
Anything more than 1.5k is definitely too expensive (I don't know how much they cost).
Also, I have done several small design and art projects for local businesses and some work for a university project, but I don't have any design qualifications. I was wondering if there are any online courses that would be best to take to improve my skills? It is more of a hobby for me at the moment, but I'd like to get more serious about it.
Any suggestions are appreciated.
I used to use a Wacom. Then I bought an 11.9 iPad pro. And use Astropad and procreate. My Wacom gathers dust in the corner
("Pro" with 13 years exp. Work at reputable studio.)
And if you get sick of design, You can look at reddit on it. Can't do that on a wacom
that is very true. I'm very sceptical about spending so much on a tab that can't be used for anything else. I'm not much of an apple fan, so I don't know a lot about their products, but are iPad pros generally considered good for design work? I've seen a few recommendations for them.
Yeah. I use one professionally. Every day. With Astropad and Procreate. Apple pencil is awesome.
To claify; Astropad is an app that lets you use the iPad as a "Wacom/cintiq" style tablet.
Procreate is a painting app.
Literally use both of these app every day.
If you're new to the field and the work, I'd recommend a cheap non-display pen tablet. You need to build up a little hand-eye co-ordination but that will take a few days of practice. The Wacom Intuos line is a safe bet and the brand is well known and respected industry wide.
I recommend this as a starter tablet to let you see work effectively while you decide if the field is for you. If it's not, then you've not shelled out too much money for a tablet you might not use again. If you decide in a few years that you're in this for the long haul, then you can look at investing more money in a screen tablet if you want to.
You absolutely do not need to spend a lot of money on a super expensive screen tablet to be able to work well in graphic design and digital art, there are many professionals out there happily using non-screen tablets for decades for their work.
thank you for the suggestion! I have been looking at non-display alternatives, and have used one in the past for a school project. Unfortunately, I have a lot of problems with hand-eye coordination due to several brain injuries and vision issues. It is likely that I will eventually be able to use a non-display type tablet competently, but it will take a lot longer for me than normal. I'm not sure if spending the extra money to save me the frustration would be 100% worth it, but I am more likely to give up if I can't get used to the non-display. I think I'll have to write up a pros and cons list for each option.
Ah, my apologies then. In that case, check out Huion tablets, they have a variety of screen tablets at a range of sizes that won’t cost you the earth. If you’re also in need of a laptop, the Microsoft Surface Pros are great at doing both jobs.
I’ve had multiple wacoms and nothing has beat my iPad Pro and Apple Pencil. You can get them refurbished for pretty cheap and you don’t necessarily need the newest one. I use procreate and astropad(if I want to go in the computer and use illustrator.) I got mine for about $500 with the pencil.
Thanks! I've seen a lot of recommendations for iPad Pros. I don't have a mac computer though, and I'm wondering how compatible it would be with my windows pc? In terms of how easy it is to transfer files, and application compatibility etc. Is it necessary to have a mac?
I wouldn’t think so...I’m not sure if astropad works with pc though. My friend uses a surface and loves it. Maybe go to the store and try one!
Most pros are using Wacom tablets. They're pretty expensive. I thinks the new surface pro could be an option for you and a little less expensive. Good luck.
I have a Yiynova MSP19 and love it. Was about 1/4 the price of a similar Wacom.
oh wow, that looks pretty good. thank you!
I am just starting out as a designer and i dont have a macbook , neither do I have a budget over 40,000. Would it be a good deal to buy ipad 10gen?
I’d recommend an iPad more for an illustrator. A decent laptop or computer for a graphic designer.
You really do not need an apple device in the first place, you can start on any kind of computer. It’s not ideal but you literally won’t even comprehend the difference for the first 2 years. It’s frustrating to me when people go and spend hundreds/thousands on the ideal hardware for something. You probably already have a device you can use photoshop with and if not you can probably get one used for sub $400.
Your knowledge makes up 90% of design and the hardware is the last 10%
Adobe products can run on most midrange hardware. You could probably find a used MacBook or something on EBay and be fine. I still use adobe photoshop, Indesign and Illustrator on my 9 year old MacBook.
iPad is an AWFUL device to graphic design. The screen is actually very good, but you can't have a proper workflow with it. You don't really need a macbook either, any laptop with a good screen is good for the most of the cases.
I want to buy a tablet that you can use to create twitch emotes, drawings and design in general. I got the recommendation to buy an I pad wich sounds good because of the performance and the ability to use photoshop. Any tips for me? What should I do?
The base iPad and Apple Pencil are a great platform with loads of software.
Thanks!
Following this post. Seems like a battle between iPad Pro and the Wacom. Could any experienced users list their pros and cons for them? I also suck at drawing off the screen so I need a tablet that shows exactly where my pen tool is.
Big one is that a Cintiq only works attached to your computer, while the iPad Pro can go anywhere.
iPad Pro for sure
Why pro? What's the difference between that and the normal one?
If your later drawing on a pro you can have way more layers then basic iPads. I have an Air 3 that still supports a lot but the pro can have the most because of processing power.
Edit> layer not later.
Wacom Cintiq is pretty common in agencies because of their workstation support with MacOs or Windows. You can use all Adobe Software, but you have no Independent system.
The iPad Pro got in the last few years a lot of popularity. It cost much, but you can use this everywhere. if you like using Adobe you have to wait 1-2 years. Adobe Draw ≠ Adobe Illustrator. Same for Photoshop or InDesign.
Hey all,
I hope I'm in the right place... I'm looking to get a standalone (portable) drawing tablet that I can take with me so that I can draw anywhere. I've been doing a lot of research and every time I think I've found a good one, I find that it needs to be plugged into a computer to work...
I'd like it to run Adobe Illustrator if possible. At this point I'm wondering if the only option left is to bite the bullet and buy either a MacBook or iPad Pro.
Any options welcome, I'm a bit overwhelmed/lost rn...
If you need Adobe Illustrator, it's either Macbook or iPad
Macbook will get you the full desktop version of Illustrator.
iPad gets you the tablet version.
As to which iPad to get really comes down to how much you want to spend.
Thank you for your reply, what if I don't need A. Illustrator but software that's still decent? Like Ibis? I'm a traditional artist wanting to learn digital. I appreciate any info/recs
If it is for drawing, there are many options. See this list

If you need vector, layout, typography, it would be an iPad , Mac or Windows.
best tablets for graphic design
Key Considerations for Tablets for Graphic Design:
Display Quality: Look for a tablet with a high-resolution display (at least 2560 x 1600) and good color accuracy (preferably 100% sRGB or higher) to ensure your designs look vibrant and true to life.
