TL;DR
Nail Application
Applying loose glitter on nails can be done effectively with a few techniques. For chunky glitters, using a toothpick or tweezers to place the glitter precisely can help achieve a smooth finish [1:1]
[1:2]. To ensure the glitter lays flat, some users suggest gently patting it down with a finger after each dip and using a piece of plastic to smooth out the nail
[1:5]. Encapsulation with clear gel polish is recommended to prevent edges from catching on things
[1:4].
Makeup Application
For applying loose glitter on eyelids, using a glitter glue or adhesive is highly recommended to ensure it sticks well [3:1]
[3:4]. Pressing the glitter onto the eyelid rather than sweeping helps reduce fallout
[3:1]
[3:3]. Some users find that using fingers instead of brushes gives better control and less mess
[3:8]. Additionally, using a setting spray on the brush can help adhere the glitter more effectively
[3:3].
Body Glitter Application
For body glitter, using a professional glitter glue like NYX's can provide lasting adhesion [5:2]. Mixing glitter with lotion or using hairspray as an adhesive are alternative methods suggested by users
[5:4]
[5:5]. If loose glitter proves too challenging, consider using glitter gels which are easier to apply and remove
[5:1].
General Tips
A creative hack for applying glitter involves using a stamp pad to press glitter onto nails or skin, ensuring even distribution without excess fallout [2:1]. When aiming for a textured look, pouring glitter over uncured topcoat and tapping it down can achieve a sandpaper-like texture, though it may snag on fabrics
[2:4]
[2:11]. Always consider the final look you want—whether encapsulated or textured—and choose your method accordingly.
I just got my Black Friday order from CNDD and she included a loose glitter freebie of snowflakes, Christmas trees and tiiiiiiny hearts. It's mani night and I want to get some use of the trees before the holidays are over.
I'm thinking I'd do my color layers first, then use tweezers to lay these on top of base coat and then immediately dip into clear?
I got CNDD liquids in this order too, hopefully they're slower drying so I have enough time to put them on.
Any tips? What would you do?
Your best bet might be with tweezers. I tried using some K&S glitter yesterday and I’ll be finding it in the floor boards for YEARS 🤣
Okay, the snowflake is not going to lie flat, it’s too big. You could definitely file off half of it to get it even. Sooooo, take one in your fingers and curl it. You can use a pencil or something similar sized. Finish your mani and at the end, put a small dot of liquid where you want the glitter, use a toothpick and dip the tip in base liquid, wax or wet it with your tongue, pick up the glitter with the tool and place it on the nail. Now hold it on there. You can kinda press it all down and make sure it sticks down on the nail. Now top it with clear, I suggest the pour over method at this point. I’ll try to look for a mani like this to show you.
These are large leaves, but glitter is glitter. Most important thing is to get it all stuck down so you won’t file off the edges of the glitter. Good luck!
This is such a good tip! I used round glitter today (i made a separate post) and I’ve been find edges all day that I’ve been filing then covering with clear gel polish so they won’t get caught in my hair. I’m saving this post for next time
Here is the mani I was looking for! See how it’s got all its shape and isn’t sticking up? That’s what you want. Merry Christmas!
If any of you are on facebook I do lives every week in my group and they should all be archived. I try to ask my ladies what techniques they want to see and demonstrate for them. I’ll tackle anything, it’s just nails! It’s art, it’s fun or at least it should be!
Following because I have the exact glitter from my order plus three others and don't know what to do 😭
I'm glad I'm not alone! I rarely make posts on reddit. I'm new to diy dip and I tried searching here and YouTube, but I saw only tips for decals and chunky powder dip. I don't want it to go to waste!
With the chunky glitters I gently pat loose glitter with my finger after each dip. When my 2nd layer is done and patted I activate and wait about 30 seconds. Then I get a piece of plastic (like the corner of a ziploc bag) and smooth out the nail. All the glitter is laying flat and smooth at this point. Then I do my 3rd layer in clear dip and continue on with my dip steps (activate, shape, activate, top coat x2) and it turns out smooth and even no ridges 😊
No, definitely not alone and we all start as beginners 😂 I'm better with the chunky glitter dips now and I wonder if you would treat these the same? I didn't feel these yet but I picture them thicker like craft glitter so I would assume you would want a curve on it like your nail? Maybe place a glitter (snowflake) on a pencil side and kind of roll into that curve
Doing encapsulations with dip is pretty inconvenient but I would recommend finish your color and filing, apply gel base and then glitters and hold them down tightly with Saran Wrap. If there are pieces sticking up after either cut them or try to put clear over them. One of the biggest things is don’t make the nails chunky
I just got these today too! I didn’t do anything with them yet, but I’m definitely going to try tweezers next time
Use a toothpick! Not tweezers. See my above tip on glitter application.
Hi all! I got this gorgeous BonnieBee Wedding Peach Gold Nail Glitter, but I’m not sure how to use it.
Do you just pour it on your uncured top coat, and then cure? Do you want to use a no-wipe top coat so you don’t have to worry about wiping off the inhibition layer? Do you walk around getting glitter on everything for the next two weeks?
Any advice is appreciated 😊
Edit to add: I do want to use it in sort of that textured-glitter-on-top look, rather than mixing it into gel. Thanks!
I usually do a color underneath, then topcoat, and before curing it I will pour the glitter over. Then tap with my finger to make sure there’s no pieces sticking out. I would think a non wipe top coat would make it last longer, but I’m not sure if it matters. I love the look too! But, depending on the glitter it can leave a sandpaper texture which is really bothersome for me.
Thank you 😌 Yes, that makes total sense about the texture. Do you find the glitter comes off, or does it stick pretty well? I want to try this for sure but hesitate that it might be a very glittery week haha.
I do similar as this other commenter.
But I’ll cure the top coat for about 10 seconds just to make sure the glitter doesn’t ‘sink’ in the top coat and sticks good
I’d say it sticks pretty well! After curing I’d give it a good scrub with a nail brush so any loose glitter falls off. But the remaining should be cemented on for the rest of the time :)
Thanks! Those methods in the Mylee video all have a top coat over the glitter, but looking on the product listing page, it looks like the glitter is the final step/not covered or encapsulated. That’s more what I’m aiming for, almost like how for sweater nails you pour acrylic powder on top… but with this glitter!
Maybe they used a matte topcoat? I see what you mean in the listing you linked, but I feel like one would struggle to get decent wear time out of glitter without top coating it.
I just saw a GREAT hack for this, I have not tried it myself but will be on my next set - I saw someone use a stamp pad! She did a full cure on a top coat and using the sticky residue layer, put a clean stamper straight into her pot of glitter (it was a large pot), then she stamped it right on top of the nail. It pushed all the glitter flat and it stuck with virtually no fallout. Then she did a 2nd top coat. I'm real excited about this because adding glitter (and even some chunky glitter polishes) can prevent a full cure and I'm super sensitive to it so I hardly use it.
That’s awesome! I agree, I’m always nervous about glitter blocking the light and undercuring!
You can top coat use a sponge to dab the excess before curing, this way you’ll be able to keep the texture.
Great idea! Thank you!
Fair warning- if you do it that way, it will snag on every piece of fabric you touch.
I did a Sephora class once and they recommended getting the glitter onto a brush by pressing into the palette, spray it with a setting spray, then pressing onto your eyelid (no swiping). Seems to work for me
Just tap the brush on? Gonna try these different ways and see which one works the best for me. Thank you!
Might have to be more pressure on the palette to pick up the glitter but should be a more gentle application on the lids. Good luck!
Lay down some glitter glue and then press your ring or pinky finger into the glitter and press onto your eyelid. Press, don’t sweep, you’ll get less fall out that way
Any particular glue work better? Thank you :)
I’ve only tried the too faced glitter glue but I really like it
Got this during the Summer Sale. I’ve been wanting to try out those pressed glitters but I have no idea how to actually use them. Anyone else use that “concealer” shade? Thank you!
I literally use my pinky or pointer and lightly press into the pallet, then apply on eyelid. Brushes just make a mess.
Ooh okay, thank you! Do you use any primers?
Allie Glines has a great video tutorial using this pallet! (And a dupe of it but we’re gonna ignore that..)
Thank you!
By not doing it.
That’s not what I asked 😂
I believe any very shiny eyeshadow. But if you want GLITTERS, I have no clue. Perhaps applying a thin layer of eyelash glue on your lids then putting the glitters on it?
Hello all! I purchased some NYX loose body glitter to put on my neck, shoulders and collarbones for a concert! What should I use to get it to stay on? I’ve heard some people say they used primer or eyelash glue but because I’m putting such a large amount on my body, I was looking for an alternative.
I would use Nyx professional glitter glue. It’s quite cheap and does a great job.
Seconding this. I use glitter a few times a week and this will keep it on, it’s designed to. Then comes off easy with water.
I would apply w a big brush then spray body w hairspray it won’t feel the best on the skin but it works lol
Mix it with lotion?
I know this isn't an answer to your question but if you aren't able to find a way to make the loose glitter work for you, you might consider getting a glitter gel? Colourpop has some and I've seen Wet n Wild have them on and off
I use foil glue for glitter (was a happy accident at first) and then I put at least 2 thin layers of gel top coat to even it out.
Oh that could be worth a try, good idea (or good accident ) . Definitely going to try that if the other tip is not working for me (I would have to buy the glue, so trying the cheapest first ) thank you!
I like to encapsulate the glitter with gel by applying a thicker layer of clear builder gel over the glitter. then I buff to smooth out any pieces that aren’t lying flat. just make sure that the bail prior to applying the glitter is thinner than the non glitter nails so that you don’t end up with a super chonky nail
I thought about making a thicker layer but it did feel like the nail gets double as thick as the others, so I will absolutely try the tip with the thinner layer under the glitter plus the buffing! Thank you, that helps a lot
Products are No name glitter (Amazon) Laveni color gel black and self mixed (winered, white) Jolifin sealing gel Beautilux Rubber Matte (gel top coat)
Dab dab dab make your nails look fab! Use a makeup sponge and dab it on it gives even coverage
As the good Cristine (simply nail logical) says. Dap dap dap. A sponge is the way to go, and then a good layer of glossy taco on top
Since I love her channel that's what I did thank you!
I have a love/hate relationship with glitter pigments. I love the way it looks and catches the light, but I cannot figure out what combination of primer and setting spray will actually keep it where I put it. I primarily like glitter for eye looks, and I have issues with expensive pigments as well as cheaper alternatives.
For the past couple weeks I've been experimenting with different primers and setting sprays - nothing seems to work for me. I end up with huge creases and sometimes little clumps of glitter just sort of fall off my lids.
I have very hooded eyes, and my lids are fairly oily. I have tried, in order of useless to sort of okay:
no primer or setting spray at all (as a control - glitter creased in less than 20 minutes)
NYX Ultimate Shadow & Liner Primer (almost as bad as using nothing, my glitter was almost completely gone by the end of the day)
Karla Cosmetics Primer (even using it with only Karla Cosmetics glitter pigment and setting spray, I had crazy creases after work)
Elizabeth Mott Thank Me Later Eye Primer (worked a little better at keeping my base eyeshadow in place, but the glitter I put on top was basically gone)
I have tried all the above primers with Karla Cosmetics setting spray (honestly I don't understand the good reviews for this product, it was about as effective as water) and On 'Til Dawn setting spray (worked better but glitter still transfered to anything that touched it, and I don't like the mattifying affect on glitter).
I've tried layering setting spray between products, just applying it at the end, and also spritzing my brushes before picking up product.
I have tried applying glitter both heavily and lightly, with a brush and with my fingers, on its own, over powder eyeshadow, over cream/liquid eyeshadow, and it's just creases all the way down.
I'd like to try Urban Decay Primer Potion with glitter, because I know it keeps matte shadows on my eyes beautifully, but I got a bad batch or something, my last tube was really liquidy and separated. I ordered a new one, and hopefully that fixes my glitter problems, but until I have it I figured I would ask for advice.
(BTW, Urban Decay customer service reimbursed me for the bad primer even though I bought it at Sephora and it was outside the return window. A+ policy, love them forever)
I also stopped using Urban Decay setting spray because it travels horribly and I can never keep it from leaking in my makeup bag. But maybe I need to go back to it?
I just want to feel confident with my makeup at the end of the day without being forced to stick with only mattes and shimmers.
What's your secret sauce for glitter looks? What glitter pigments actually stay where you put them?
Edit to add: I left a primer off the list - I have also tried Naba Cosmetics pigment glue, and even with their own pigments, it was pretty useless.
Glitter glue. Here from 2016 makeup! Look for a glitter glue eye primer. Too faced used to have one and so did nyx. If mainstream brands no longer carry them look for indie brands. They tend to have shimmers. I was a makeup hoarder so I’m still going through my nyx ones hence idk if they still sell them
a makeup artist i watch on tiktok mentioned she uses clear eyebrow gel to adhere glitter!
I suggest using a glitter primer. NYX has one & it is different from their regular eye primer.
How does this perform under matte shadow with glitter layered on top?
I’m not sure if it’s the proper way to use it but normally I do my shadow like normal and then put some of this on top & then the glitter. Be careful though, pat, don’t swipe so you don’t ruin your look. I prefer using a brush to be more precise. Sometimes I also put some on my hand and tap my brush into it then go with my glitter.
I use this one and it’s ok. It doesn’t solve all problems. I also don’t have hooded lids but they are oily enough I need a serious eye primer setup to get regular eyeshadow to work.
This is what I use, and it works pretty well for me! I use an angled eyebrow brush to apply it + the glitter (since I typically use glitter to accentuate my eyeliner rather than for eyeshadow) and hit the whole face with setting spray. Very little glitter droppage like that unless my eyes water, haha
I like to go to an occasional rave and the random little packs of glitter glue I got for those always works way better than any glitter shadow.
I've heard a lot of good things about Fyrinnae Pixie Epoxy.
I just tried putting glitter on my nails with regular gel. On one hand I did a layer of gel cured it, stuck some glitter on there using the stickiness then put on a top coat and cured it. The other hand i put a layer of gel only cured it for about 10 seconds to make it more sticky then put the glitter on, cured it again then put a top coat on. The only thing is they’re pretty bumpy and I wanna find a way to make it not bumpy so if anyone has any tips that would be great. I do have Biab too, i was thinking that might be better? Any and all help is welcome!
I use a loose chrome glitter, apply it with a brush after a full cure on my color, a full cure on the glitter and then apply the top coat. The brush let’s me lay the glitter where I want it and I can push it around without worrying I’m going to disrupt the color. I did have a single speck of glitter create a bump in one spot I missed…
To add, I definitely am far from a professional!! And this is just what I’ve found through trial and error
I’ll try that out! Thank you!
If it’s small I like to mix glitter with top/clear coat on palette and paint on
I like to use either a makeup sponge or a dense, short haired makeup brush. If I use a makeup sponge, I dip it in the glitter and press it onto partially cured base coat. If I used the brush, same steps but I brush the glitter on. Both ways allows the individual glitter pieces to lay super flat. You may still be able to feel some texture, but two coats of top coat fixes this for me. If it's a chunkier glitter, I encapsulate with a thin layer of builder gel.
Thank you so much! I’ll try it
So this is why my step sister keeps getting stuck in the dryer. She didn't read these directions.
"and Reddit solves another case of killer dryers"
Hahaha
Step brother, what are you doing?
Means to have a blower going as well, they don't want people to blow glitter around.
Permanent press only.
Probably a translation error between shake and tumble.
Although shake doesn't make it a whole lot better 😂 shouldn't it be fluttering or waving ? Google translate is so entertaining
Go ahead. Tumble dry. See what happens.
No no no...just heard about the monster dryers
No advice, but it looks great!
Thank you!
Don't be afraid to make some of them extra shiny by giving them points. Kind of like a star.
Good idea!! Thank you
Very sparkly!
