How to Apply Glitter Eyeshadow Without Fallout

TL;DR Use a glitter-specific primer or glue, apply with pressing motions using your fingertip or a dense brush, and consider doing eye makeup first to clean up any fallout before applying foundation.

Primer and Glue

Using a glitter-specific primer or glue is crucial for minimizing fallout. Many users recommend products like NYX's glitter glue or similar options [2:5], [5:1]. These products help the glitter adhere better to the eyelids, reducing the chance of it spreading everywhere. Some users have found that switching brands can make a significant difference if their current product isn't effective [1:3].

Application Technique

The technique used to apply glitter eyeshadow can greatly affect the amount of fallout. Pressing the glitter onto the eyelid using the pad of your fingertip or a densely packed brush is recommended [3:1]. This method helps the glitter stick to the primer and minimizes movement during application. Avoid sweeping motions which can cause the glitter to disperse beyond the desired area.

Base and Blending

Creating a base with a neutral eyeshadow color that matches the glitter can help blend the edges and reduce the appearance of an obvious line between the glitter and surrounding eyeshadow [1:2], [5:2]. Blending is key, as well as starting with a small amount of glitter and building up to the desired intensity [1:1].

Fallout Prevention

To prevent fallout on the face, some users suggest doing eye makeup first, allowing you to clean up any mess before applying foundation [2:3]. Holding a tissue under the eye while applying glitter can catch any excess [2:4]. Additionally, using setting spray on the brush before application can help the glitter adhere better, although caution is advised as this can sometimes cake the surface [3:1].

Removal Tips

For removing stubborn glitter, makeup wipes or high-powered removers like Lancome's bi-facil are recommended [2:1]. Tape can also be useful for picking up stray glitter without scrubbing, which can irritate the skin.

I stopped using glitter on my eyelids as I don’t know how to stop the obvious line it creates between where the glitter stops and the surrounding eyeshadow. For darker colours it looks weird imo on my eyes and I hate it. Unfortunately this photo is all I have so I apologise for the quality and if it’s unclear what I mean. I did try different glitter primers/glues and I found it didn’t make much difference so I’m assuming it’s my technique. I’m definitely not new to makeup but it’s something that I haven’t been able to figure out how to work around so I just stopped using it.

Blending is key... Always has been. With glitter shadows, less tends to be more. When I use a pressed glitter, I'll create a look first to go underneath the glitter. Then, I will take just a little bit of glitter on the brush and blend it out over the desired area.

1 upvotes on reddit
thewigglez206 · OP · 2 years ago

Pressed glitter is much easier to work with imo than loose though. I don’t have that issue when I use anything in a palette that has a binding agent because you can kinda blend and diffuse it over your lid. I always use a similar colour underneath, usually a pretty decent shimmer matching the shade of the glitter as closely as possible.

Edit: I realise my post didn’t specify but I’m specifically talking about using loose glitters and a seperate primer/glue.

Dylan_Is_Gay_lol · 2 years ago

I don't have much experience with loose glitter, but I think the advice still stands. Start off slow, blend thoroughly, build to desired intensity. Might be worth trying a glitter glue if you're not already using one. If you are, and it isn't helping, you could try switching brands.

Help with glitter.

Posted by Regular_Yak_1232 · in r/MakeupAddictionCanada · 3 months ago

I need help with glitter eyeshadow. I use an eyeshadow primer to lock my eyeshadow in place. I usey finger instead of a brush for glitter eyeshadow and dab it on so it doesn't spread everywhere.

How do I stop the glitter from getting EVERYWHERE? It's on my cheeks neck clothes car seat anyone I hug gets glittered.

Embarrassed I go to the event washroom pick and scrub and scrub in the bathroom to remove it and the foundation comes off and all my other make up comes off but the glitter stays stuck.

Now I have a read blotchy face covered in glitter.

I have another question. I have exceptionally sensitive eyes and skin making it next to impossible for me to purchase make up and then end up not being able to use it because it irritates me.

Times are tough. I can't just endlessly spend money trying everything until I find something reasonably priced that doesn't irritate me. My budget is enough to buy and try 1 item under 20 dollars once a monthe. How do I afford a full face of make up that doesn't irritate me that I can actually wear?

Advice and help welcome.

You might need glitter glue instead of primer to really grip the glitter, but some shadows also have way less fallout than others. Liquid glitter shadows fall out less than powders and creams.

Another thing is do the eyeshadow first. If it’s messy you can clean up before foundation. I’ve also put a tissue under my eye as I applied to catch the fallout

So try wedding, your eyelid, slightly damp it and then once you put the shadow on it’ll grip to your eye also put a Kleenex underneath your eye covering your cheek when you apply any extra glitter that’s fallen will fall into the Kleenex, not on your face

Some glitter eyeshadows are just not great. Glitter is not safe around the eyes period, but some are better than others. Festival-style large chunky glitter will migrate a lot more than smaller cosmetic glitter. Removing glitter is one of the few times I'll use a makeup wipe. If not makeup wipes then a very high powered makeup remover like the Lancome bi-facil, but it's very pricy. Wipe away from the eyes and hold the remover of choice over the glitter until it fully saturates before starting to wipe. Tape can also help. Do not scrub, because that gets the glitter into your eyes, slicing into your skin, and causes oodles of irritation.

For products, I genuinely don't know what to suggest that isn't just "try different glitters", but the Romand Light and Glitter Garden palette is insanity in terms of staying power. That stuff doesn't move at all, even if I rub my eyes. The Kim Chi Diamond Sharts are also incredible.

Glitter Fallout Help

Posted by threescreamingfrogs · in r/MakeupAddiction · 9 months ago

I went a little crazy on the Viseart eyeshadow palette sale lol and while I LOVE the matte shades I’m struggling with application on the glitters and find that they have a lot of fallout both during application and throughout the day. I typically use cream to powder style glitter eyeshadows with a finger or dry brush application and I’m struggling to get enough pigment with these methods. Anything that can help make these shades usable would be super helpful!

Please see a list of things I try that work to a degree, the nature of glitter is that it sparkles everywhere lol.

Using an eye primer like the Urban Decay all nighter or something tacky so there’s less ‘slip’. Applying the glitter either with the pad of your fingertip in a gently pressing (not sweeping) motion or a use a very short densely packed brush with the same press technique. Keep the fluffy brushes for blending your matte shadows only. If you use a brush you could spray your brush with setting spray too, but beware this can cake the surface of your eyeshadow up, forming a hard layer over time. Your eyes may be too sensitive depending on the product also. Do your eye makeup first, cleaning up the fallout with some scotch tape or makeup tape before you do your base. Try applying a baking powder under your eyes and brushing the excess off gently once you’re done. Use a setting spray once your whole face is done and letting it dry completely before you open your eyes.

I started using a concealer brush to apply my eyeshadow primer instead of my fingers. Then when I’m ready for shimmer/glitter, I take the primer brush and dab on some more primer where I want the shimmer. This makes it a bit tacky so the shimmer sticks. Then I take a clean concealer brush, a nice small one, to apply the shimmer. Works great for me.

try dampening your brush with water/fixing spray mist to improve payoff, or using a glitter glue or eye primer!

alternatively, use a sponge tip applicator to apply!

most kbeauty brands like clio usually intend their shimmers to be sheer toppers, so you can't always expect a lot of coverage/intensity from them... but they're usually very sparkly and ethereal tapped on sheerly~

Those plastic handle sponge tip things that used to come with eyeshadow? Are amazing. We threw them all out when the Youtube makeup revolution started and we all became artistes with our brushes lol. Basically any shadow that says to apply with a finger, I use these instead.

Anyone who’s been frustrated by weird formulas like the Selena Gomez eyeshadows - these spongey things are PERFECT for those.

Okay, how are we getting glitter pigment to stay put?

Posted by sad-fatty · in r/MakeupAddiction · 4 months ago

I have a love/hate relationship with glitter pigments. I love the way it looks and catches the light, but I cannot figure out what combination of primer and setting spray will actually keep it where I put it. I primarily like glitter for eye looks, and I have issues with expensive pigments as well as cheaper alternatives.

For the past couple weeks I've been experimenting with different primers and setting sprays - nothing seems to work for me. I end up with huge creases and sometimes little clumps of glitter just sort of fall off my lids.

I have very hooded eyes, and my lids are fairly oily. I have tried, in order of useless to sort of okay:

no primer or setting spray at all (as a control - glitter creased in less than 20 minutes)

NYX Ultimate Shadow & Liner Primer (almost as bad as using nothing, my glitter was almost completely gone by the end of the day)

Karla Cosmetics Primer (even using it with only Karla Cosmetics glitter pigment and setting spray, I had crazy creases after work)

Elizabeth Mott Thank Me Later Eye Primer (worked a little better at keeping my base eyeshadow in place, but the glitter I put on top was basically gone)

I have tried all the above primers with Karla Cosmetics setting spray (honestly I don't understand the good reviews for this product, it was about as effective as water) and On 'Til Dawn setting spray (worked better but glitter still transfered to anything that touched it, and I don't like the mattifying affect on glitter).

I've tried layering setting spray between products, just applying it at the end, and also spritzing my brushes before picking up product.

I have tried applying glitter both heavily and lightly, with a brush and with my fingers, on its own, over powder eyeshadow, over cream/liquid eyeshadow, and it's just creases all the way down.

I'd like to try Urban Decay Primer Potion with glitter, because I know it keeps matte shadows on my eyes beautifully, but I got a bad batch or something, my last tube was really liquidy and separated. I ordered a new one, and hopefully that fixes my glitter problems, but until I have it I figured I would ask for advice.

(BTW, Urban Decay customer service reimbursed me for the bad primer even though I bought it at Sephora and it was outside the return window. A+ policy, love them forever)

I also stopped using Urban Decay setting spray because it travels horribly and I can never keep it from leaking in my makeup bag. But maybe I need to go back to it?

I just want to feel confident with my makeup at the end of the day without being forced to stick with only mattes and shimmers.

What's your secret sauce for glitter looks? What glitter pigments actually stay where you put them?

Edit to add: I left a primer off the list - I have also tried Naba Cosmetics pigment glue, and even with their own pigments, it was pretty useless.

Glitter glue. Here from 2016 makeup! Look for a glitter glue eye primer. Too faced used to have one and so did nyx. If mainstream brands no longer carry them look for indie brands. They tend to have shimmers. I was a makeup hoarder so I’m still going through my nyx ones hence idk if they still sell them

How does this perform under matte shadow with glitter layered on top?

1 upvotes on reddit
beautylover97 · 4 months ago

I’m not sure if it’s the proper way to use it but normally I do my shadow like normal and then put some of this on top & then the glitter. Be careful though, pat, don’t swipe so you don’t ruin your look. I prefer using a brush to be more precise. Sometimes I also put some on my hand and tap my brush into it then go with my glitter.

I use this one and it’s ok. It doesn’t solve all problems. I also don’t have hooded lids but they are oily enough I need a serious eye primer setup to get regular eyeshadow to work.

This is what I use, and it works pretty well for me! I use an angled eyebrow brush to apply it + the glitter (since I typically use glitter to accentuate my eyeliner rather than for eyeshadow) and hit the whole face with setting spray. How to work with glitter multichromes?

Posted by juicytulip · in r/Indiemakeupandmore · 7 months ago

Hi all! I’m usually a low-fuss eyeshadow lady because I HATE glitter and I loathe fallout. With that being said, I got my hands on some beautiful multichromes that I want to make work. Applying them wet helps a little but the ongoing fallout makes me unlikely to reach for them. Is there some sort of product that would help with this, either a mixer or some sort of “sealant”? I haven’t had much luck with glitter glue in the past and I have deeper set eyes which doesn’t help. TIA!

I like to bind it with a drop or two of duraline then apply over a thin layer of NYX glitter glue. If it’s got tons of binder then it might come out flakie or chunky.

If you don't want to buy an extra product & have a setting spray already, that can work instead of water for applying wet. I know there's different methods of "wet" application, but I like to put a little loose powder into a plastic palette (from Dollar Tree), then hit it with a spritz of setting spray & mix mix mix. (You could also use the lid of a plastic palette for this.)

1 upvotes on reddit
thepetitepeanut · 7 months ago

I also hate glitter and loathe fallout and the only thing that gets me to wear my glittery multichromes is Fyrinnae Pixie Epoxy. It is a glitter glue but I can almost fully eliminate fallout with it. I used to have the NYX glitter glue but it wouldn't work nearly as well for shadows with a larger particle size. I still use an eye primer under it though, it isn't meant to replace a normal eyeshadow primer.

I haven't used it before, but Inglot Duraline is a mixer that I've seen used for normal eyeshadows. I think it wouldn't work very well for multichromes, especially the glitter ones, but it exists and I might be wrong. I've mostly seen it in the context of people making eyeshadows into eyeliners and such.

Get a good eyeshadow primer, like NYX glitter glue and a good setting spray, like OS On Till Dawn. But spray before you put on mascara because some setting spray can make your mascara run.

There used to be a product called "glitter glue" maybe someone on here would have info about it, I never used it and I'm not sure if it's still made. I'd be careful using actual adhesive on the skin of the eye which is very thin..I think the word glue in glitter glue is more metaphorical.

Fallout is mainly the fault of the shadow. Some formulas create a lot of fallout. However, brushes are a factor. If the brush doesn't pick up the product well, then it'll just fall off once you start applying it, instead of blending onto the skin. What eyeshadows and brushes are you currently using? Also, make sure that your using the right kind of brush for certain applications (for example, blending brushes vs. packing brushes).

If you have a really bad problem with fallout, do your eye look before applying any face products so that you can simply clean the skin under the eyes. Or, place a lot of translucent setting powder under the eyes to catch fallout, then brush it away when you're done.

You definitely want a fluffy brush for blending, but you want a packing brush for shimmers/foils. They'll apply much better and it may reduce fallout.

No problem!

Always make sure you tap off excess. Use a wet brush/spray the brush with a setting spray or face mist. And if all else is still failing it could just be the eyeshadow. And you might have to be light handed with it, and use a big brush to lightly dust away any unwanted debris.

How do you apply glitter eyeshadow without fallout

Here are some key tips for applying glitter eyeshadow without fallout:

  1. Use a Sticky Base: Apply a glitter primer or a sticky eyeshadow base to your eyelids. This helps the glitter adhere better and reduces fallout.

  2. Choose the Right Brush: Use a flat, dense brush or your fingertip to apply glitter eyeshadow. This helps pack the glitter onto your eyelids rather than sweeping it across, which can cause fallout.

  3. Apply in Layers: Start with a small amount of product and build it up gradually. This allows for better control and minimizes the risk of excess glitter falling onto your cheeks.

  4. Spray with Setting Spray: Lightly mist your brush with a setting spray before dipping it into the glitter eyeshadow. This can help the glitter stick better and reduce fallout.

  5. Do Your Eyes First: If you're concerned about fallout, do your eye makeup before applying foundation. This way, you can easily clean up any fallout without ruining your base makeup.

  6. Use a Fan Brush for Cleanup: If you do experience fallout, use a clean fan brush to gently sweep away any excess glitter without disturbing your makeup.

Recommendation: For best results, consider using a high-quality glitter eyeshadow like the Stila Glitter & Glow Liquid Eyeshadow, which has a built-in adhesive and minimizes fallout.
