TL;DR
Choosing the Right Primer
The choice of eyeshadow primer is crucial for longevity. Many users recommend primers like Urban Decay Primer Potion, Milani Eye Primer, and MAC Paint Pot for their effectiveness in keeping eyeshadow vibrant throughout the day [1:2]
[3:5]
[2:6]. It's important to select a primer that matches your skin type—some are better for oily lids, while others work well for dry skin
[1:6].
Avoiding Excessive Product Layers
Applying too many layers of product can lead to creasing and fading. Users suggest avoiding concealer on the eyelids, as it can cause creasing [5:4]. Instead, use a tinted primer if you need color correction
[5:7]. Additionally, applying translucent powder over primer before eyeshadow can reduce the primer's grip
[1:4], so it's generally advised against unless specifically needed for blending.
Managing Oily Lids
Oily eyelids can break down eyeshadow quickly. If you have oily skin, consider adjusting your skincare routine to minimize oil production during the day [2:3]. Using blotting papers or setting sprays can help control oil
[3:4]. For those with hooded or oily lids, specific primers designed for these conditions may provide better results
[3:10].
Using Cream Shadows and Setting Techniques
Cream shadows can serve as an excellent base for powder eyeshadows, providing an additional layer of adhesion [1:3]. Some users also find success with setting powders applied after the eyeshadow to lock in the pigment
[3:2]. Baking the eyes with setting powder can enhance durability, especially for vibrant looks
[4:3].
Addressing Allergies and Skin Reactions
If you experience allergic reactions or eczema around the eyes, it might be beneficial to skip eyeshadow during flare-ups [5:5]. Ensuring that skincare products do not make the eyelids too oily or too dry can prevent makeup from sliding or crumbling
[4:2]. Hydrocortisone cream can help manage rough patches caused by allergies
[4:1].
By following these tips and experimenting with different products, techniques, and routines, you can achieve longer-lasting eyeshadow wear tailored to your unique skin needs.
I am struggling with my eye makeup...
I put it on and it looks great and pigmented, but in a matter of an hour or two the colors start fading and by the end of the day, i have a very faint color on my eyes and i always get eyeshadow settling in my crease no matter how much i set that area. It's very frustrating.
I use eyeshadow primer and i use translucent powder before applying eyeshadow. And setting spray at the end... What do you guys do?
What eyeshadow primer are you using? If possible, using a primer which is good for oily eyes can help to make the makeup last longer. I personally find Urban Decay Primer Potion really good for making eyeshadow last, but.im sure other users have their favourites too.
I use essence i love stage eyeshadow base. I actually have dry skin, but it has come to my attention that my skincare "layers" maybe too much and making my makeup breakdown throughout the day.
I haven't had luck with that primer myself -- maybe give some others a shot? The Milani one is very popular.
And do make sure your skincare has fully sunken in before moving on.
The other things I do are use a cream shadow as a base (over the primer) and sometimes spritz brush with water or setting spray after getting the shadow on there. Sometimes I'll put some glitter gel lightly on a brush and tap that over it too (this takes practice or you can lift up eyeshadow when you do it, but if you do it right it kinda creates a barrier on top to protect the shadow a bit).
Hang on. You put translucent powder over your primer, before applying shadow? Don't do that. Your primer is there to grip the shadow.
I do it because it's a tip a lot of youtubers gives... I will stop doing that.
Definitely stop doing that - it’ll make a world of difference. If you have areas you need to blend more easily, choose fluffier airier brushes (yes tiny fluffy blending brushes are a thing) and only lightly roll them in colour, apply and blend, lightly roll them in colour, apply and blend. The trick is light application and building up.
I have multiple blending and application brushes with different diameters and I use them in different parts of the eye to achieve looks efficiently. For areas where I want a wider swathe of colour I use a larger airier brush and for areas there I need a narrow zone of blended colour I choose a much smaller diameter fluffy blender (we’re talking around 1/5th-1/4 of the diameter of a medium sized eye blending brush).
Another trick I do is to choose more shadows that are similar in tone and apply them using smaller brushes, and blend them into each other.
I used to do this too and ended up with my looks getting muddy. Now I apply straight on and the eyeshadow looks more vibrant. BUT since my eyes are hooded I do make sure everything is smooth in the crease before I'm done. One of my favs primer is the wet n wild photofocus eye primer. It performs better than my UD primer potion.
Imo it depends on what you want the next step to be. If you're using a sticky primer the stick can help your shadows adhere to your face, but thay also makes blending harder, so some people go over primer with a blending colour. If you're having trouble with things staying in, you can try stopping it and seeing if the blending is an issue.
Just eyeshadow primer. I don't (always) set it with powder after applying.
For my oily lids I like the MAC 24-Hour Extend Eye Base and the original clear version of the NARS Smudgeproof Eyeshadow Base. I've also tried the about-face eyeshadow primer, but I haven't gotten anywhere near the same longevity I've had with the other two (especially the one from MAC). I suspect that one may be better suited for drier eyelids.
I have oily and hooded lids and swear by the Ulta matte eyeshadow primer. I have noticed that just a little dab of it works for both lids and it stays put all day.
this really is a very affordable gem!
I use only eyeshadow primer Wet n Wild Photofocus Eyeshadow primer, and eye cream ( Eveline Cosmetics Bio Hyaluron Expert) before primer. My eyeshadow is vibrant all day and survive a bad night of sudden sleep. When I wake up I have still the eyeshadow on, little bit faded on some parts but the color is still vibrant.
Hello! First post here but long time lurker and honestly love you guys. I searched the sub for my question and couldn’t find much but I’m also impatient af so if this is an annoying repeat-type post, I apologize!
Anyway I love eyeshadow. I love to experiment and try new things, wear bold colors, etc. I have over 70 beautiful palettes including everything from drugstore to high end. Lately I have been noticing that no matter what I do (primer, primer powder, white primer, glitter glue, nothing, setting spray or powder, liquid eyeshadow from Kosas, just everything) I cannot get my eyeshadow to last more than an hour or two. It’s so frustrating! I’ll work hard on a look and love it, but then I go to the bathroom and I’m like what the fuck where did it GO?! It’s just gone. Faded to a faint hue. (Also as an add- all my mascara rubs off on my top eyelids all day too)
I should note I have no idea what my eye shape is and also that when I was younger I never had this problem…. But I’m almost 43 (on Sunday) and maybe that’s what’s causing it? If anyone has any experience with this or tips for me, I’d really appreciate it.
Aghhh! Help… my palettes are a ‘wastin
A few questions:
What shadow primer are you using? Are you eyelids oily? If you have tried all things makeup related, it could be skincare related.
I have tried so many primers… Like, name one popular one and I’ve probably tried it. Lol. I’ve tried the ones that feel like pore hiding face primers (thank me later) and kind of leave a layer, lotion-ey ones that absorb, dry powders, thicker ones like the ones in the pots (nyx has one)
As far as my kids being oily- I guess now that I look the lids before the crease do have a shine to them. I’ve always had combination skin and never noticed oiliness until like right this moment.
If they’re hooded or droopier could that be the issue? I always use a powder shadow in my crease and up but then whatever I put on my lid ends up on the skin at the crease… wtf
Edit : LIDS not kids. My kid ain’t too oily
My thought process is if you have oil that develops on your eyelids, that is visible without makeup on, it’s probably a combo of that and eye shape. The oils might break up the shadow/primer and then it can transfer/fade from the friction of your lid rubbing.
Do you put moisturizer/eye cream on your lids? If so, have you used the same thing for a long time or tried different ones?
Seconding the skin being oily. If thats not the case, are you sweating thru out the day? I suggest switching the type of eye primer you use, and/or finding a different less oily skin regimen for the AM.
ALSO, setting sprays!
Ok thanks for this. I guess skin can get oilier as you age? Any suggestions for primers? I do use crude skincare and those are oily but I don’t usually put it on my eyelids… idk. Maybe my eyeshadow days are over… wahhh
I believe anyone can wear eye shadow. I used to think I could never wear eye shadow because it wouldn’t stay, but its simply a matter of making sure the “material” (your skin) is primed for the type of application of pigment.
I personally use Urban Decay eye primer. Don’t be fooled by the price; i had one that lasted me like 5 years (beyond expiration, i know, but i still used it and it worked fine).
YES!! Never had oily eyelids until I hit 41 last year! What a pain it is. MAC Paint Pot is the only thing I've found that works for me. It doesn't hold up on the hot sweaty days of summer, but does for most normal Southern California days.
I have also found that the Laura Mercier eyeshadow sticks stick pretty well:)

First of all, I’m a makeup newb. I’m using Socialite shadow stick by color pop and immediately after putting on it rubs off in spots and I am reapplying constantly! In the picture you can so it’s around the center of my eye you can see its patches where it’s rubbed off from blinking I guess.
I’ve tried putting Winky Lux eyeshadow primer on first, and I also put Urban Decay makeup setting spray on to no avail. Any suggestions?
Milano eye primer, but also a glitter specific primer will help. Setting powder can help too.
Thank you so much! I’ve bought some Milano primer I’m excited to try it tomorrow!
The Milano eye primer is highly recommended. I wonder if it’s the oil on your eyelid and the texture of the eyeshadow. Maybe using a powder eyeshadow or just any pressed powder beforehand will help keep in place? Or finishing powder beforehand to absorb the oil?
Same! I do 24hrs shifts and the Milani primers gets me through it. Sometimes even longer. I have oily eyelids.
I also use the Milano eye primer and it's absolutely the best!
This is so helpful, and makes total sense! Thank you so much!
You might try rice paper blotting tissues, then using a cream eye shadow, maybe from Gen See or Merit.
Oh interesting okay, I’ll look into that!
Urban Decay Primer Potion (eyes) I have the world’s oiliest skin - but my eye makeup stays put. I’ve used it for 15+ years & wont use anything else.
Interesting. I’ll put this on my radar. And due to this whole fiasco I’m realizing I think I have hooded eyes and it makes me so sad! I think that’s part of the problem here.
I also have hooded eyes. You can grab a sample / travel size for a lower investment from ulta. It’s amazing, I promise it’ll help!
Satin to matte concealer!! Just make sure you had a light shimmer base eyeshadow over it, eyelid all the way up to the brow bone. Then proceed to creating the eye look your going for on top of that base !!
My eyes have been what I think is reacting to something on my eyes which has been affecting my eyeshadow. As you can see in the first picture, it starts out with the corner of my eye with like lines that seem to be the eyeshadow not wanting to stick to my eye or something like that. In that photo I’m wearing colorpop’s All Amethyst pallet (shades high grade, trigonal, and sunbird) with NYX ultimate shadow eyeshadow primer, which I’ve stopped wearing. It then escalates to crumbling or sticking, whatever you like to call it. My left eye is also generally very watery when this happens, which doesn’t help. It tends to water shortly after I put my makeup on, and then won’t stop “crying” for generally the whole time I have makeup on. I don’t know if it’s a reaction or what, but I don’t know how to fix it. For the first 3-4 years of me wearing makeup, with the first 2 being with Mary Kay eyeshadow and no primer, the next one being color pop eyeshadow and no primer, and the last being color pop eyeshadow with the NYX primer, this didn’t happen at all. Then in the past year to year and a half it just started, and hasn’t really stopped. Any advice would be great, I’ve been trying to figure out why this is happening and have not succeeded so far. In the second and third photos I’m wearing Juvia’s Place The Candy Shop palette for the lighter pink (shade 5 [I can’t find the name]), and their Garden of Juvia’s palette for the darker pink (shade peony) with NYX ultimate shadow eyeshadow primer. In the fourth and fifth I’m wearing Mary Kay Chromafusion Eye Shadow- shades Sunlit Rose, Frozen Iris, and Sweet Plum, with Urban Decay Original eyeshadow primer. I used Urban Decay All Nighter setting spray for both the Juvia’s palace and Mary Kay looks. Maybe this can help with why this is happening, idk. I’ve tried removing eyeshadow primer from my looks but it doesn’t tend to help, but I’m not sure if it’s the eyeshadow brand either.
Hey love I would suggest trying the urban decay primer potion or the milani eyeshadow primer, which I’ve heard is a dupe for the UD. This is the only primer that’s worked for my oily, sweaty lids that crease easily. Blend it out while it’s wet, allow it to dry and make sure there’s no creasing on the lid before you begin your eyeshadow. I would also suggest investigating your skincare, specifically any eye creams, to see if that might be a factor by making the lid too oily or too dry, which could cause the shadow to slide around/crumble up. I hope this helps, good luck!!!
How do you blend the urban decay primer potion out? Do you use just your finger, a makeup sponge, or something else? And how long do you let it sit for? I’ve tried researching how to blend it and how long to let it sit but haven’t had much luck.
I just use my finger. I blend it out immediately or at most let it sit for about 30 sec because I’ve found if you wait too long to blend it out, it crumbles and pills up on my lids and will make my shadows apply patchy. I wait until my lids no longer feel tacky to apply shadow, like you would wait to apply powder to set your foundation.
This is how I do my eye makeup and it never fails 1- moisturizer 2- primer 3-concealer If ur eyeshadow is creamy you add that it’s good You pack ur eye makeup do ur things and you’re going to bake yes bake ur eyes with setting powder Leave it for a bit then dust it off it’ll look good especially the color transaction
So you put concealer over the primer, and then eyeshadow? I never heard of that!
Yes, it sets a beautiful base and helps the shadow stick to ur eye !
Also, that’s a makeup tip I got for u use ur brown lip liner as an eyeliner instead or/ with ur liner Pulls the look together ( sharper it before use to its clean from before usages and you can draw with it )
And if you got any other questions you can always dm me
I had a pretty aggressive allergic reaction to ColourPop eyeshadows, too, and when you described the eye watering, it sounded familiar. Might want to try a different brand of both the shadow and primer and see if it fixes the problem.
The same happens when I’m allergic to makeup. You said this started a year ago? Did you get a new eyeliner or mascara? Or even undereye concealer or powder? Something you’re using seems to be triggering that watering.
I did get a new mascara. Maybe not using that would help. Bc I stopped using a lot of eyeshadows and it didn’t seem to help, and I’m just starting to use the urban decay primer potion instead of my NYX eyeshadow primer, so I can’t say for certain if the primer was the cause yet. I think I’ve been using that eyeliner for longer than a year, but I’m not certain. Might be that as well.
If you notice any rough patches around your eyes after you take all makeup off, then it’s likely an allergy. My makeup won’t ever adhere to those rough spots, and it kinda burns when anything is applied to them. I use hydrocortisone cream on them occasionally and it helps them fade away so makeup can adhere! I hope you can figure out your eyeshadow situation even if it isn’t allergy related!
Do not put reg moisturizer on your eyelids. Only an eye cream underneath and on brow bone. Not the lid. Use a primer then use shadow.
Routine: I have chronic eczema and sometimes get around my eyes, so I have to heavy pre-moisturizer with la roche-posay cicaplast mixed with double repair. Followed by super goop glow tinted screen, urban decay eye primer, concealer, then eyeshadow (tinted eyestick),followed by Eyeliner/mascara. Lastly tarte maracuja setting spray. It does not matter the brand of eyeshadow I use, it always ends up looking like this :( Also happens when instead of using super goop, I use hourglass tinted moisturizer. Please help 😩
maybe try setting the eyes with setting powder before applying eyeshadow? you could also try an eye cream instead of a heavy cream on days when your eczema isn’t bad.
Cream shadows on top of all the other cream skincare will do it. Try powder shadows or go easy in the skincare on your lids.
The concealer is making it crease. Use a primer that is the same color as your skin if you want the same effect as concealer without the creasing. I use the Sigma eye primer when I want my eyelids to be blank and set it with powder eyeshadow
It's the heavy moisturizing on your eyes. I also get eczema around my eyes and skip eyeshadow on those days until my flare-up subsides.
Yup, on flare up days I skip make-up around eyes. It probably something I made up in my head, but I feel like heavy moisturizing will prevent future flare ups lol. Probably just wishful thinking haha
Moisturizing does prevent my flare-ups, but I do it at night and that's plenty for me!
The skin around your eye is very thin. You cannot use a bunch of products and expect longevity.
Also, why are you using a primer and concealer? Typically people do either or. Although I'd never advocate for concealer use on the lids.
I have dark hyperpigmentation on my eyelids, a lot of the tutorial I saw online use both primer and concealer. Actual some use primer, color corrector, and then concealer.
That's too much product. Tinted eye primers exist for this reason. Why color correction if you're gonna put a shadow on top, ya know? My fave is the Anastasia.
Are you not meant to use primer before concealer ?!
Why would you use concealer on the eyelid period 🤢👎🏾👎🏾
Ok, I’m going insane!!
I cannot for the life of me keep my eyeshadow from creasing!! I’m 42f and I have hooded eyes(always have) and this has never been a problem since I started using eyeshadow primer about 16 years ago!
I’ve always used Urban Decay eyeshadow primer and Urban Decay eyeshadow with great success…but not anymore! After 2 hours it starts creasing.
I’ve tried using the most minuscule amount of primer, I’ve tried using the amount I usually use(pretty tiny amount), I’ve tried using more. I’ve tried using over the top of foundation and without foundation. I’ve tried buying new primer and eyeshadow thinking that was the issue. I just tried the Clinique eyeshadow primer and it was just as bad. I’ve tried ColourPop eyeshadow also and it creased even more.
I use Tarte Shape Tape setting spray(a good amount) and let it dry before opening my eyes.
I’m losing my mind over here! What can I use to prevent creasing?
Mt ride or die eyeshadow primer is Mac's prep & prime. Its the only one that works for me where my eyeshadow doesn't crease after a few hours. Just don't use too much, you only need a little bit and let it set down after you apply it so it gets a little tacky first! Imo a good eyeshadow primer shouldn't require you to set it with powder, it should just work!
Thank you for this! I feel like I’m going crazy because I used to not have this issue! I haven’t used MAC in a long time, so I’m definitely going to try this out!
Mac paint pots or the Mac 24 hr eye base.
Seconded. I use Paint Pot in Painterly. It works better for me than any eye primer I’ve ever tried.
Yep, it's great for my 40 year old hooded eyes
Mac Paint Pot in Painterly but I’m also playing around with one from elf that seems to be a close dupe for the NARS which I can’t find in stock anywhere anymore. NYX glitter glue has been great for more sparkly stuff.
Mac works way better for me than using any other kind of primer. Kind of wish they could make a clear version.
They have a proper eyeshadow primer (24 Hour Extend Eye Base).
52 and I’ve used Elizabeth Mott’s Thank Me Later for years after UD stopped working for me. Love it.
😮 Hair primer? Do tell!! my hair is wild. It’ll do whatever you want, but you have to force it into submission. Pain in my ass.
Milani.
I've tried the UD ones (I'm currently using one up now) and Milani's is so much better at a fraction of the price.
Hope it works for you! I get it from Amazon.
I'm a college student who wears high pigmented eyeshadow everyday. About half way through the day it is looking patchy/creasing. I use Fondation and power on my eyelids before shadow because it's all I have. Any recommendations for primers for eye shadow is appreciated. I want my makeup to last all day (about 10 hours)
You need a setting spray.

I love the too faced eyeshadow primer - I have oily eyelids
Have you tried MAC setting spray? I heard it’s really good.
I have not, I'm open to trying a setting spray I don't really understand how to use it or how it works 🙃
I love urban decay all nighter
You can spray it on your face about almost arm’s length away or spray it away from you and walk through the mist.
I use either Urban Decay or Nars eyeshadow primer
Use an eyeshadow primer I love the profusion pigment base and the price is only 4 bucks !!!!
I have a love/hate relationship with glitter pigments. I love the way it looks and catches the light, but I cannot figure out what combination of primer and setting spray will actually keep it where I put it. I primarily like glitter for eye looks, and I have issues with expensive pigments as well as cheaper alternatives.
For the past couple weeks I've been experimenting with different primers and setting sprays - nothing seems to work for me. I end up with huge creases and sometimes little clumps of glitter just sort of fall off my lids.
I have very hooded eyes, and my lids are fairly oily. I have tried, in order of useless to sort of okay:
no primer or setting spray at all (as a control - glitter creased in less than 20 minutes)
NYX Ultimate Shadow & Liner Primer (almost as bad as using nothing, my glitter was almost completely gone by the end of the day)
Karla Cosmetics Primer (even using it with only Karla Cosmetics glitter pigment and setting spray, I had crazy creases after work)
Elizabeth Mott Thank Me Later Eye Primer (worked a little better at keeping my base eyeshadow in place, but the glitter I put on top was basically gone)
I have tried all the above primers with Karla Cosmetics setting spray (honestly I don't understand the good reviews for this product, it was about as effective as water) and On 'Til Dawn setting spray (worked better but glitter still transfered to anything that touched it, and I don't like the mattifying affect on glitter).
I've tried layering setting spray between products, just applying it at the end, and also spritzing my brushes before picking up product.
I have tried applying glitter both heavily and lightly, with a brush and with my fingers, on its own, over powder eyeshadow, over cream/liquid eyeshadow, and it's just creases all the way down.
I'd like to try Urban Decay Primer Potion with glitter, because I know it keeps matte shadows on my eyes beautifully, but I got a bad batch or something, my last tube was really liquidy and separated. I ordered a new one, and hopefully that fixes my glitter problems, but until I have it I figured I would ask for advice.
(BTW, Urban Decay customer service reimbursed me for the bad primer even though I bought it at Sephora and it was outside the return window. A+ policy, love them forever)
I also stopped using Urban Decay setting spray because it travels horribly and I can never keep it from leaking in my makeup bag. But maybe I need to go back to it?
I just want to feel confident with my makeup at the end of the day without being forced to stick with only mattes and shimmers.
What's your secret sauce for glitter looks? What glitter pigments actually stay where you put them?
Edit to add: I left a primer off the list - I have also tried Naba Cosmetics pigment glue, and even with their own pigments, it was pretty useless.
I suggest using a glitter primer. NYX has one & it is different from their regular eye primer.
This is what I use, and it works pretty well for me! I use an angled eyebrow brush to apply it + the glitter (since I typically use glitter to accentuate my eyeliner rather than for eyeshadow) and hit the whole face with setting spray. Very little glitter droppage like that unless my eyes water, haha
How does this perform under matte shadow with glitter layered on top?
I’m not sure if it’s the proper way to use it but normally I do my shadow like normal and then put some of this on top & then the glitter. Be careful though, pat, don’t swipe so you don’t ruin your look. I prefer using a brush to be more precise. Sometimes I also put some on my hand and tap my brush into it then go with my glitter.
I use this one and it’s ok. It doesn’t solve all problems. I also don’t have hooded lids but they are oily enough I need a serious eye primer setup to get regular eyeshadow to work.
a makeup artist i watch on tiktok mentioned she uses clear eyebrow gel to adhere glitter!
I like to go to an occasional rave and the random little packs of glitter glue I got for those always works way better than any glitter shadow.
I've heard a lot of good things about Fyrinnae Pixie Epoxy.
Glitter glue. Here from 2016 makeup! Look for a glitter glue eye primer. Too faced used to have one and so did nyx. If mainstream brands no longer carry them look for indie brands. They tend to have shimmers. I was a makeup hoarder so I’m still going through my nyx ones hence idk if they still sell them
Calling all fellow sufferers of the oily and hooded eye combo - at my wits end with this one so thought I’d throw it out here. Have had it with buying super nice palettes after hearing they are amazing (and they are, pigmented and lovely and EXPENSIVE) only for the formula to last about two seconds on my eye area. I know prep is key so I am drying the lid beforehand, using an oil absorbing base powder, then a primer (have tried countless primers at this stage) and setting spray and absolutely nothing works. So now I want to know if there are any eyeshadow formulas out there that will give me a fighting chance before I drop the cash again.
Brands I’ve tried:
I have also tried eyeshadow sticks, creams vs powders, you name it. I feel like I might just be relegated to the ‘bit of smudgy eyeliner as eyeshadow’ crew forever. Any tips/advice/reality checks welcome.
Are you using a primer? Which one?
Currently using a Nyx one as the latest try - previously I’ve used the Urban Decay one, wet n wild, Elf (eye and regular primers), Mac and then Thank Me Later.
Try the Nars eyeshadow base. It's really good and has made the Huda eyeshadow last for hours. It's been a game changer for me. How are you finding the Nyx one?
Another vote for Beauty Bay here too along with Urban Decay Primer Potion. I’m not sure I fully understand your prep steps though. I would cleanse the lids with whatever works for you usually (I use a cream cleanser in the morning then a balm in the evening). Then apply the primer potion, then do my eyeshadow. I often use a Mac paint pot to colour correct so if I’m doing that, that would be the next step, then apply powder shadow. I don’t set the primer in anyway as it defeats the purpose of it gripping your powder shadow. I also make sure I don’t get foundation or concealer on my lids.
I wonder if maybe this is actually one of the things I’m doing wrong. I might try some of the suggestions here tomorrow and leave off the setting spray totally (on the eyes at least) and see if that helps?
Second beauty bay! Best I've ever bought and won't buy any other brand now.
I used to love sigma eye primer but can't seem to find it now. Not sure if it got discontinued or what
When ELF discontinued their Putty Eye Primer, I found Maybelline 24 Hr Colour Tattoo Eye Stix in the shade I am Confident it is brilliant as an eye primer
I personally like Cosmic Brushes eyeshadow; I too have hooded oily eyes and they last decently, plus they’re good value for the quality.
Yes, Cosmic Brushes eyeshadows are amazing, highly recommend! Also came here to suggest the P.Louise eyeshadow base, it’s been a game changer for me. It’s really great for helping with eyeshadow blending and longevity on hooded eyelids.
When you say you dry the lid - you mean dab it with tissue/towel or fully clean it? You definitely need to be fully removing any oil from the lids - by washing it or a through wipe down with micellar water or something! That makes a big difference.
Yep I hear you - I’ll do a face wash in the morning then use micellar pads to wipe down the oiliest bits of my face (eyelids included) - then make super sure they are bone dry before applying base stuff. I used to use a toner too but had to dial back a lot of my skincare after a dermatitis outbreak.
Hmmm if you’re cleansing and drying out the eyelids before make up, it could be a case of over cleansing, leading to more oil production. Even though I’m oily, my skin actually functions better and seems more balanced when I use hydrating products. I’d still add a moisturiser around the eyes before primers etc
Hopefully the pictures are clear enough, I have a deep under eye crease and can’t seem to stop my eyeliner or eyeshadow from creasing. I have greasy lids and dry watery eyes from wearing contacts which makes it worse. I am pretty much a total noob at makeup but I’ve included a pic of my inspo so you can understand the types of looks I’m hoping to eventually achieve! I mostly use brands available in Canadian drugstores, willing to buy more expensive products from Sephora if they are really worth it! The primers I’ve used/tried include wet n wild photofocus eyeshadow primer, nyx ultimate shadow & liner primer, personelle eye & lip primer, and nyx face glue gripping primer. The eyeliners and eyeshadows I’ve used/tried include covergirl perfect blend eyeliner, revlon ColorShare crayon eyeliner, wet n wild kohl crayon, Sephora 12h crayon, wet n wild semi-matte multi-stick, the OG ABH norvina palette and I have a single black eyeshadow that I think is either rimmel or revlon. I use maybelline lasting fix setting spray. I’ve had the best results using the nyx face glue gripping primer, wait till tacky then use wet n wild semi-matte multi-stick and then dabbing with a beauty blender sprayed with the setting spray but still doesn’t last very long before creasing 😖
Eyeshadow primer. UD Primer Potion or MAC Paint Pota
You need to use much less eyeshadow on your lower lash line. Apply it as close to the lash line as possible with a thin brush and avoid blending it out.
Use eyeshadow primer, then dab with white eyeshadow or translucent face powder. Then apply your eye makeup. I’ve been doing it this way for years and found it works best. I sweat on my face a lot which is why I started doing this. Once in a while if it’s a bad sweat day it’ll still affect my eye makeup but way less than it used to.
I will try that! Any recommendations on translucent powders to buy?
lol unfortunately my tried and true was discontinued a couple of years ago and I’m still on the hunt for a new one. The one I’m currently using is the Clinique pressed translucent powder. It’s okay but I definitely couldn’t give it a full recommendation as it ends up adding a bit of undesired texture.
I’d like the recommend the Kim chi powder. I know it was like. Popular on TikTok or whatever but I bought it and it genuinely works amazingly
Be sure not to skip your eyelids when it comes to moisturizing your face. Your eyelids may be trying to overcompensate for the lack of moisture by producing oil. You can also use a mattifying primer or an oil blocking translucent powder
I literally set my lids with concealer and then a beige shadow before applying my colours. They pop more that way and they stay in place.
I also think it helps to use a good quality shadow. I use the MAC single pots for every day and prefer higher end palettes generally, because they have more pigment (so you don’t need to use as much) and better formulas that are less “chalky” so they don’t move around so much.
how to make eyeshadow last all day
Here are some key considerations for making your eyeshadow last all day:
Start with a Clean Base: Ensure your eyelids are clean and free of oils. Use a gentle cleanser to remove any residue.
Use an Eyeshadow Primer: Apply a good quality eyeshadow primer to your eyelids. This creates a smooth base and helps the eyeshadow adhere better, preventing creasing and fading.
Choose Long-Wearing Formulas: Opt for eyeshadows that are specifically labeled as long-wearing or waterproof. These formulas are designed to withstand heat and humidity.
Layering Technique: Apply a cream eyeshadow as a base and then layer powder eyeshadow on top. This adds depth and helps lock in the color.
Set with Powder: After applying your eyeshadow, lightly dust a translucent setting powder over your eyelids to help absorb any excess oils and set the color.
Use a Setting Spray: Finish your makeup routine with a setting spray designed for eyes. This can help lock in your eyeshadow and keep it looking fresh throughout the day.
Avoid Touching Your Eyes: Try to avoid rubbing or touching your eyes, as this can cause the eyeshadow to wear off more quickly.
Recommendation: For a reliable eyeshadow primer, consider products like Urban Decay's Eyeshadow Primer Potion or Too Faced's Shadow Insurance. Both are well-reviewed for their effectiveness in prolonging eyeshadow wear.
