What Redditors are Saying

Best Time to Book a Rideshare

TL;DR

  • Early morning rideshares can be booked on demand, but scheduling in advance might offer peace of mind.
  • Consider local taxi services or backup plans for remote areas.

Early Morning Availability

Rideshare availability in the early morning hours can vary based on location and demand. In cities like Albuquerque, riders have successfully caught early flights using Uber without prebooking [1:1]. However, some users have experienced issues with scheduled rides not being fulfilled [1:2]. It's generally recommended to give yourself extra time by booking earlier than needed, as drivers often work during these hours for higher pay [1:3].

Scheduling vs. On-Demand Booking

While scheduling a rideshare in advance can provide reassurance, it doesn't always guarantee a driver will show up [3:9]. Some drivers honor reserved rides, especially for airport trips [3:1], but it's wise to have a backup plan such as a local cab company [3:2]. Checking the app early in the morning to see available vehicles can help decide whether to book on-demand or reserve in advance [4:5].

Pricing Considerations

Scheduled rides can sometimes incur higher costs compared to on-demand bookings [4]. For instance, scheduling a Lyft ride to the airport was significantly more expensive than a regular fare [4:4]. Surge pricing is common around airports, so be prepared for potential rate hikes [5:2]. Comparing prices with local taxi services might offer cheaper alternatives [5:4].

Remote Locations

In remote areas, availability can be unpredictable. Users staying outside small towns or in mountainous regions should consider reserving rides well in advance [3]. Having a backup plan, such as contacting local cab companies, is advisable if rideshare options are limited [3:7].

Additional Tips

For those traveling to airports, signing up for programs like Spot Saver can expedite security checks [5:1][5:6]. If rideshare costs are high, parking at the airport might be a more economical option depending on the length of your trip [5:9].

ORIGINAL POST

I'll be leaving my house in NE Heights at 4:30 am on a Sunday to catch a flight at the Sunport. I won't have a vehicle available to drive myself, so I'm curious how available Ubers or Lyfts are at that time on Sundays and if that's a good option.

I don’t know, but I’d try to schedule in advance with a good tip.

It just make sense! When I’m on work travel I always do this especially if I’m not sure how availability is in the city. I ran into an interesting one in Augusta Georgia, I was staying just across the river in South Carolina and apparently that state requires extra certifications so many drivers won’t cross the state line 🤣 one afternoon I just walked across the bridge and I got to see some alligators which was interesting…

This.

Book it the night before, because sometimes there are all of three cars between Santa Fe and Las Lunas, in the early hours (or, so I have been told).

Its always better to schedule in advance but i find some people just work at that time because they get paid more when there are less drivers out

I would not bank on it at 430. Schedule ahead or get someone to give you a ride.

I was able to get a 3 am Uber, basically the same trip, with no problem. Schedule in advance and tip well.

I've made this work before, catching an early flight like that on a Tuesday or Wednesday. I do it once every month and have never missed a flight.

I see suggestions on here about prebooking. I tried that once before and it was a disaster. I suggest not relying on that and having a backup plan if you do thay, such as scheduling it for earlier than 430 so you still have time to take a regular ride, which might take 20 to 30 to arrive.

I'm trying to do some last minute ORD to KEF/BCN/FCO/ATH the next few weekends before those seasonal routes are finished on United. My only problem is that FCO and ATH leave too early (~3:45 pm) and KEF never seems to have any seats available :(

Going to airport at 8:30am from somewhere kind of remote. Should I do reserve or order it in the morning?

Posted by KateDeLu · in r/uber · 23 days ago

I am staying at a friend's house, which is five minutes up a mountain road outside of a small town in Colorado. I got an Uber here no problem two days ago from Denver airport. I need to be picked up around 8:30 tomorrow and I'm not sure whether I should reserve ahead of time or just start looking to book an Uber around 8 AM tomorrow. Any advice on what is most likely to be successful? If I were to go to the airport right now it says an Uber could pick me up in 15 minutes so I think there are definitely some around but I am pretty new to this all so I don't quite understand how it all works. Thanks for your help.

Open the app and check how many vehicles are around you. It’s visible. Do it early in the morning too so you can judge if you want to reserve in advance.

Reserve doesn’t hurt you but it gets a vehicle for sure. I am a driver and if a driver accepts a reserve they normally are on the road an hour or two in advance to get that reserve. Of nobody picks it then it goes into the local pool and assigned to a driver when the time comes. They could still decline but the chances are slim. Always have a backup plan for a local cab company in case it doesn’t come through or somebody to help get you to airport if you are scared you are too rural.

Reserve. Depending on how remote, you may want to have a backup plan in case there aren’t any drivers around.

Let me tell you as a Driver. I Honor my reserve rides specially if it’s Airport. And showed up to every one of them once I accepted. So I don’t get it why these folks are saying with 💯 reserve won’t show up.

I’d say give yourself plenty of time. Reserve for an hour earlier than original just to be safe.

Getting a rideshare in the middle of the night

Posted by plantmama104 · in r/StPetersburgFL · 28 days ago

I'm leaving for a trip this week but my flight has me needing to be at TPA at 5am on a weekday. This would mean getting a ride around 4:30am if I want to avoid paying $20/day to park at the airport. I don't have Uber but I have Lyft. A normal ride to the airport is $20 but to schedule it it's $50+. Is it unreasonable to think I'll be able to get a ride that early in the morning without scheduling it? I'm on a tight budget for this trip, lol.

5am uber to SeaTac?

Posted by toastsockplate · in r/redmond · 1 month ago

Hi everyone, I scheduled a 5am uber to SeaTac for a 7:20am flight on a Monday later this month. How likely am I to be matched with a driver for a ride this early? Should I use Lyft or another service instead? (I do not have a car so driving myself is not an option, and public transit is infeasible for my situation). Thanks!

I don’t think you’ll have much of a problem, as you are going to SeaTac and Uber and Lyft drivers swarm SeaTac for opportunities. What you may fall victim to are rate surge hikes, because often fares are more expensive going to or coming from the airport.

34 upvotes on reddit
typicalrowerlad · 1 month ago

Early morning and late night ubers to and from SeaTac are borderline criminal pricing- I think my last one was $120?

If you can, I'd just be tempted to stay with a friend near the 1 line and train in.

toastsockplate · OP · 1 month ago

So uber is charging me $66 for the ride via schedule in advance! It’s also getting reimbursed by my work :) unfortunately I have some logistical complications that make public transit infeasible from my location. Thanks for your response!

There are Uber drivers circling around Bellevue basically 24/7/365, and a lot in Redmond too. 5am is not early. If it was 2 or 3am, then you should stress a little, but 5am is like normal business hours for Uber. Source: former driver.

Use a taxi. They are cheaper from Redmond and always arrive on time. Taxis from Redmond to Seatac have improved in the last 3 years. Good, clean cars and drivers. I always pay $20-$25 less for taxis compared to Uber/Lyft.

Colorado CO-OP Ride share Relaunches July 16th.

Posted by FoxPriestStudio · in r/Denver · 2 months ago

Hi l'm Randy one of the drivers with Colorado CO-OP RideShare.

There's a complete refresh of the CO-OP and APP after listening to all the feedback from drivers and users. We're officially relaunching July 16th with new user and driver phone apps. And we now officially support Airport Rides.

While many people have tried the co-op in the past PLEASE give it another chance.

CO-OP EXCELS AT SCHEDULED RIDES My fellow drivers and I are committed to be there for your important ride and the drivers have had lots of education to support that.

If you need an instant ride, the other platforms currently are faster, sadly because the other platforms are over saturated with too many drivers and with poor pay.

With CO-OP you are paying no more for your ride, and potentially less, as it's competitive with other platforms, but CO-OP pays me the driver most of the fare. With the other platforms it's less than 50% after they take all their fees.

The CO-OP does not do surge pricing and 80% of the money goes to the drivers.

Advice on a scheduled ride

Posted by BabyGirl06301 · in r/Lyft · 2 months ago

I have never taken Lyft before, and I need to get from Newark, NJ to Washington Heights, NYC early on a Saturday morning (I'd like to be in the city by 8 AM, and the ride would be about 40 minutes). I want to schedule a ride ahead of time, but I'm not sure a driver would accept it, and if they don't, I don't have a way to get to my destination.

I just wondered if someone had knowledge that could reassure me that I can schedule this ride ahead of time, and it would be especially helpful if anyone had insight on whether a driver would accept a job going from NJ to NYC. Thank you.

EDIT: I guess my real question is how likely it is that a driver would accept my request, given it's going from one state to the next and it's a long drive.

I live out in the country and someone will always take the scheduled ride. Add a $7, pre tip and you are golden. I did an airport ride at 3am the other day, driver was flawless and the car was brand new.

1 upvotes on reddit

Scheduled rides give a false sense of security. They really aren't any more reliable than just requesting a ride when you're ready to go.

4 upvotes on reddit
reddiwhip999 · 2 months ago

Maybe try from the airport. The problem drivers have there is, if they're not from the city, they can't do a pickup in Manhattan, and have to deadhead back to NJ. So, maybe at Newark airport, you'll get a NYC-based driver who is fine with taking someone into the city....

1 upvotes on reddit
DFW-Extraterrestrial · 2 months ago

This is going to all come down to how much Lyft is actually willing to fork over to the driver for doing it. This is the scary part.

3 upvotes on reddit
bigheel2k2k · 2 months ago

Don't try to time it too close. You may have to schedule it way early and just find something to do if it actually gets accepted quickly. Most drivers won't accept it or if they do, will cancel once they find out where the ride is going because they can't pick up a ride until they get back to NJ.

What are my chances?

Posted by DependentTraining473 · in r/Lyft · 3 months ago

Hey so I need to be at a bus station that's about a 30 minute drive from me at about 6:30-7:00 in the morning. I'm still labeled as new since I haven't done 20+ rides (I'm at 18) but I've never had trouble getting a lyft to and from that general area. I'm just worried that since its so early in the morning no one will be available to do it or accept if I schedule it. I like to think I tip decently for these rides as I tend to tip 25+ which even if I do only 25 that is normal 50% of my upfront cost. What are my chances of being accepted?

I definitely plan to schedule it that’s what I meant by making reservation( I did edit that part out and replaced it with schedule for clarity). I’m just worried that even if I do that no one would be able to or want to do that drive because of how early it is.

There are quite a few drivers like myself who only do early morning scheduled rides. You can add a tip with Lyft at least when you schedule the ride. Depending on how big your city is it shouldn't be an issue. Just book the pickup for about an hour before you need to leave where you are at to get to the destination.

AI Answer

🤖

best time to book a rideshare

Key Considerations for Booking a Rideshare:

  1. Time of Day:

    • Peak Hours: Avoid booking during rush hours (7-9 AM and 5-7 PM) when demand is high, leading to longer wait times and surge pricing.
    • Late Night/Early Morning: Rideshare services can be more affordable and quicker during off-peak hours.
  2. Day of the Week:

    • Weekdays vs. Weekends: Weekends, especially Friday and Saturday nights, tend to have higher demand and surge pricing. If possible, book during weekdays for better rates.
  3. Events and Holidays:

    • Special Events: Major events (concerts, sports games) can significantly increase demand. Plan ahead and book early if you anticipate needing a ride during such times.
    • Holidays: Expect higher prices and longer wait times during holidays (New Year’s Eve, Fourth of July).
  4. Weather Conditions:

    • Rain or Snow: Bad weather can increase demand for rideshares, leading to surge pricing. If you can, book in advance when bad weather is forecasted.
  5. Advance Booking:

    • Pre-booking: Some rideshare apps allow you to schedule rides in advance. This can be useful for early morning flights or important appointments.

Recommendation: To save money and ensure a timely ride, aim to book during off-peak hours, avoid weekends and holidays if possible, and keep an eye on local events. If you know you’ll need a ride during a busy time, consider pre-booking to lock in your fare.
