Understanding Surge Pricing
Uber uses a dynamic pricing model, which means prices can fluctuate based on demand. During peak hours or high-demand periods, Uber implements surge pricing, where fares increase to incentivize more drivers to get on the road. This typically happens during rush hours, weekends, holidays, and major events [3:2].
Off-Peak Hours
To find cheaper rides, consider using Uber during off-peak hours. These are times when there is lower demand for rides, such as mid-morning after the morning commute, early afternoon before the evening rush, late night after bars close, and weekdays outside of typical commuting hours. By avoiding high-demand times, you can often secure lower fares.
Location-Based Variability
Surge pricing can vary significantly by location. Some areas may experience higher surges due to local events or specific traffic patterns. If possible, try to request rides from areas less prone to high demand or move a short distance away from a crowded area to potentially reduce the fare.
Using Fare Alerts and Promotions
Uber sometimes offers promotions and discounts through their app. Keeping an eye on these offers can help reduce costs. Additionally, some users have reported that Uber occasionally sends out exclusive offers or discounted rates to encourage usage during slower periods [3:1].
Alternative Ride-Hailing Options
If Uber's pricing is consistently high, consider exploring other ride-hailing services like Lyft, which may offer competitive rates or promotions. Comparing prices between different platforms can help ensure you're getting the best deal available [3:7].
I have valid drivers license and insurance but im not 19 yet so the only option I have is ebike delivery
Try it then report back here.
If you don’t go over 20 mph you’ll be fine… unless a bunch of people your delivering to reports you
You can’t.
You’ll get e-bike orders which means low pay orders and you’ll be saving too little after all the effort
Eventually Uber will notice your orders are getting there faster than expected and boot you. Maybe consider actually using an Ebike?
I am not sure what to make of it, uber kept sending me, and i kept declining the same $15 scheduled trip for six hours , which was slated for Thursday..Is this happening to any of you drivers?
Uber should stop offering the trip to the same driver that once declined.
Is this affect to AR rate?
That’s nasty…
Yes, they sabotage
I wouldn't say they "send" you the call. Uber offers the advanced reservation as a notification. You just ignore it or you open it and hit decline and tick the box to not receive the offer in the future. Done.
That’s what I’m thinking, he didn’t rejected or declined. Simply, didn’t accept an offer. As far as I know it doesn’t even affect the acceptance rate.
But how would that feed his victim complex?
I just love it when you hit the match button 3 or 5 times and you do not get the ride and all the sudden it's an exclusive offer.
It means you are the only driver available. lol
To the contrary, too many drivers in my city. But What i suspect is I declined about four not worthy airport scheduled/reserved rides within 15 minutes early this morning. So uber thought if $28 is not good enough for you, we gonna bombard you with the same $15 scheduled trip all day long. There is no other way around it. i even uninstalled the app and reinstalled it thinking it was a glitch, to no avail.
Clearly this is your FBI contact trying to get in touch with you. CIA? NSB? KGB?
They'd rather make 0 than pay more.
I was sitting at the airport today and realized 2 things…
Surges are higher at the pickup point than at the waiting lot. Why? Because the rider will pay a higher surge price, but the driver will receive a lower surge payout. Uber pockets the difference. Out of curiosity, I cruised by the pickup area and picked up the extra surge price. Didn’t get a request for 20 minutes and when I did the base fare was ridiculously low.
Again while sitting at the waiting area… I was holding a $10 surge. Surge went away and a driver pulls in next to me (so no surge for him). Match comes in for an airport pickup. I immediately click Match. 2 seconds later I wasn’t matched but the driver with no surge pulls out. Why? Even though I was ahead of him in the queue, he got the ride because he wasn’t holding a surge. So Uber didn’t have to pay him the surge, therefore they gave him the ride.
Uber is playing effing games. They have mastered the art of manipulation to maximize their profits and screw the drivers (and passengers). They’re downright evil with their bs. So I don’t care one bit about my acceptance rate or helping uber with their algorithm. I’ll take the rides I like and they can pound sand with the others.
My favorite is when they send an open trip out for anyone to grab on trip radar. I will refuse 99% of all offers because they’re a joke but then uber will send me the exact same ride as an “exclusive offer”, much of the time for a little less money. So they know I have no interest in the trip that’s why I refused and then send it as an exclusive simply so they can manipulate your acceptance rate. I see this dozens of times every day and it should be criminal.
I know what you mean! If you notice my post at the end. Even though I have declined Trip Radar it offered it again as an exclusive! That’s why my AR is 0%! No means No Uber! Stop raping us lol
Yeah but you got to take some rides. Never understand a 0% acceptance rating. Do you want to work? Just sit at home declining rides?
If Uber sends me 100 garbage offers in a row, I’ll go to a 0% acceptance rate. I’ll just do orders for DoorDash
True! But I would rather not make money than lose it. I can always wait.
There is an interview online of the Uber CEO saying that exact same thing when they first introduced Upfront Fares. He stated that if the driver fares were too low, then drivers wouldn’t accept the trips and then the algorithm would increase the trip fares based on unfilled demand.
Lyft is doing the same thing. It’s total bullshit. I was platinum tier for years. All I had to to was give 1500-1600 dollars worth of peak hour rides and I was platinum for over two years straight. Now with this new acceptance rate criteria it’s impossible to stay platinum. Not just because of low paying but rides to and from dangerous areas as well.
Their simple way of putting an impossible bar to achieve for drivers and them getting bigger margins.
I thank that it is implemented just there are to many drivers that take the low ball offers.
Only because there are still many drivers out there who don’t realize they’re getting screwed and care more about their acceptance rate than money.
It IS actually. I wish people would understand that taking garbage, playing into their games are bad for everyone. If the trash trk stopped TOMORROW… the system would turn every call into $25! I don’t know the exact numbers/workings of it. DD used to put a dollar or two on it every time someone would decline it. Sooo if they wanna drop rates… let THEM foot the bill!
I order some food from Kwik Trip last week Monday. A 2 liter of soda, a fish sandwich, and 2 beef stroganoff dinners. I didn't receive my 2 beef stroganoff and I wasn't at my phone when I got a call about it. I put it on my order that I didn't receive those items. Uber won't give me a refund because I'm ineligible for getting too many refunds.
I can't help that there's a history of restaurants/stores and drivers that have forgotten things or given me the incorrect item. I just want what I paid for or my money back.
Uber Eats, Door Dash, Grub Hub, are so expensive and so often SHAFTING their Customers and SHAFTING their Drivers, ,
You need to have your phone with you whenever you place order for shop & pay. The driver may have informed you while shopping that your requested item is not available and needed your approval for replacement. If this approval is not received by the time the driver is done with shopping, then the item is permanently removed. It is your responsibility to keep your phone with you for changes during your shopping.
Sorry for having an incident that pulled me away from my phone for two minutes. Also, this establishment does the "shopping", not the driver. The establishment should've automatically taken the items off of my order but they didn't.
The one time i got in a long spat with support the moment i mentioned the word “lawyer” they gave me a refund
Contact your bank account and credit card to: Contest the Charges, on grounds of "items NOT delivered/received"
I use PayPal to pay but I've already filed a dispute there.

(I made it sound like an ad AGAIN lol)
On Sept 3, I placed an order from Costco through Uber eats platform totaling over $240. Unfortunately, the order was never delivered to me.
Initially, I realized the delivery address on the order was incorrect. I immediately contacted the delivery person through the app and provided the correct address. He confirmed he would deliver there. However, after waiting over 3 hours at the correct address, the driver never arrived. The order was instead marked as “Completed.”
To ensure there was no misunderstanding, I personally went to the original address listed in the app and confirmed with the front desk that no package was delivered. They mentioned a man did come by, but he left without dropping anything off. Additionally, during our chat, the driver requested my PIN. I provided it, but he was not at the correct address, nor did he deliver my order anywhere.
This means my order was never delivered—neither to the original address nor to the corrected one I provided. Despite contacting four different Uber Eats support agents, no one has been able to help me reach the driver or resolve this issue. For an order of this size, this lack of resolution is extremely disappointing and unacceptable.
I requested either the order be redelivered promptly, or a full refund, but all they said is that I changed my address therefore I’m not eligible for refund. What in world?! I request at least a redelivery of my full order to my correct address. Since the driver works under Uber Eats, this is not my responsibility. The excuse about me changing the address does not apply, because no delivery was made at all. It is not even delivered to the right address. I should get either my delivery or refund. It is $240 not $24!
As someone living in Canada, I feel extremely sad. I feel that the integrity of our country is disappearing. I was deceived by the driver—I waited downstairs for more than two hours, but he never came, the items were never delivered, and I received no refund. Must we all become dishonest to be treated fairly? I don’t want that. I only want a normal, reasonable resolution to this issue. Again I am really disappointed with this experience with Uber eats. Anyone can give any advice as to how I can deal with this issue? Thank you in advance!
Never, never, never give the pin until you are face to face with the driver.
This right here. Uber will take any excuse not to refund you, and this gives them all they need.
Because I thought the driver had a time limit 😭and it was my request for him to change the address😢
Don't give the pin until you can see them. Once they call you or text you through the app they get a timer. When the timer is up (8 minutes in my market), it basically turns into a leave at door delivery. They take a picture and leave. Had that happened, there would have been a picture at the old address and the front desk person could have confirmed (hopefully with additional security cam footage) that the driver took a picture and then stole your stuff and you'd have a case for driver theft.
Sounds like you did not change delivery address in the app, but simply request that the driver come to a different address.
The whole point of the PIN is to ensure delivery actually happens. I don't understand why anyone would give it out otherwise. Just not thinking I guess.
FYI ordering from Ubereats has become extremely risky, due to drivers stealing orders. Also since you gave the driver the pin before you had possession of the order both Costco and Ubereats will blame you for trying to steal from them. Quit using Ubereats and never give a pin out until you have the order.
Why would you give out the pin number over the phone???? Why????
Because I thought the driver had a time limit 😭and it was my request for him to change the address😢
Why did you give them the pin if they weren’t there??
Because I thought the driver had a time limit 😭and it was my request for him to change the address😢 I regret that deeply…
Pay more attention next time. This type of post happens every day ... "I used an old address, it wasn't delivered, and now they won't refund me." That's literally the one thing they won't do ... Last time that happened to me the support agent told me to dispose or eat the food (real address was 1 hour away).
Also ... like everyone else said ... give them the PIN when you're physically with them ... you didn't pay attention and then broke the one rule uber put in place to prevent this exact thing from happening.
Sure looks like foreign companies are making bank in NZ, but paying basically no tax. Imagine how many nurses, teachers etc we could buy if these guys just paid a fair share.
Even if we argue about what a 'fair share' is, this aint it.
edit - spelling
They do pay GST, and drivers pay tax in their earnings.
I guess there are a lot of multinationals avoiding corporate tax in NZ and elsewhere
Yep which is why Jack tame went so hard at Chloe in the q and a interview.
Tax avoidance needs to be looked at but carefully weighed up.
The other thing is Uber eats is making less annually than iwis. They need to start paying their fair share too.
Interestingly, if you had said 'Uber Eats is making less annually than all the Churchs combined, who also take full advantage of our tax law"
I wonder how that would have gone down?
>The other thing is Uber eats is making less annually than iwis. They need to start paying their fair share too.
If you want this bold claim to stay up, you are going to need to link some evidence for the claim please.
We all pay GST mate, so maybe we shouldn't pay tax either. Boy, love this sub. /s. We need a wider tax base to keep a functioning country the way we'd all prefer. So yes, tax all these multinationals...does Netflix pay tax for example...
>Boy, love this sub. /s
I know you're being sarcastic and we love some snark but please try not to run people in this community down just for having a different opinion. We want people to feel OK about sharing different opinions here and comments like this might discourage that. Have a read of Rule 1.
That's revenue, not profit. They paid ~1m tax on ~3.5m profit.
Profit is revenue minus expenses. Break down their expenses by line item and the majority will be reasonable, but there will be licensing fees that their overseas parent companies charge them for operating in NZ that offsets the tax burden from NZ to another country.
Unsurprisingly, solving international tax burdens is complicated for a number of logistical, diplomatic and accounting reasons. The Digital Services Tax resulted in retaliatory threats from the US if implemented, and that was pre-Trump!
Ultimately I think we need to pull the trigger on something like a DST at some point, but it should be timed alongside inviting European and Chinese competitors into the country.
I wonder if the actual profit is artificially low like other businesses that have huge costs (brand fees etc) to countries that are tax havens like the Netherlands and Ireland. That was profit is tax free on another country! Otherwise 3.5m profit on that huge turnover seems unrealistically low to me.
It's the aforementioned shifting around of costs. A simplified balance sheet would look like this.
Revenue:
Expenses:
It's not that the expenses are fake, it's that Uber can put their thumb on the scale for what the NZ company is liable for, reducing their profit in NZ and increasing it in Ireland, which has a lower corporate tax rate.
In the same way that contractors might embellish their expenses without being fraudulent about it, this is hard to combat. It's made worse by the fact that the countries that these parent companies belong to will happily punish NZ if they perceive us to be taking from their tax base.
Perhaps if we went directly to the food outlet and bought the food rather than voting for convenience because we are too lazy to get off our obese arses, the local business will benefit with higher returns, the tax will be paid, and the money will stay in NZ.
That overweight horse has slowly bolted. It is now out of breath,
It was to me.
Its hard to get income tax out of multinationals. More serious countries than ours struggle with this. We can still benefit from having companies here even when they do not pay company tax. They still employ people and provide goods/services.
Our Government has the option to rule that Uber drivers must be treated as employees not contractors.
What’s the most rides you’ve done in a day? I don’t remember what my highest was because i was off the app a long time, but put in 54 last night between uber and Lyft. I think I’m going to try push for 70 one of these days for fun.
That’s just more gas and miles on your vehicle. If I can make $100-$150 on a single trip why would I worry about doing 35 more trips? It’s Not about how many, it’s about how much!
Not if the trips are all a mile or two or less.
I focus on quality over quantity. My market is spread out enough that even if I wanted to rack up some numbers it wouldn't be much more than I do now and it would mean even less earned after expenses.
Most i have done is just on uber i hit 40

Damn only $260 for 36 rides is crazy work. I did 15 once only because I was trying to finish a challenge which was like $300 or something for 4 hours of driving.
Oh my God, you almost did like sometimes more than a week of my Ride in a one day
😂😂, did another 44 yesterday as well
My weekly average out between 38 to 44 ride
How are you able to go online for 14 hours in 1 day?
Im stationary a lot of the online time which doesn’t count towards the active 12 hours.
Rip I made 213 with less rideable 14
Solid day sure. I was trying to hit $400 but called it quits at $395 since I had a $5 cash tip.
Ahh I didn’t read the botttom double apps!
That's a lot of rides
The other day, I called an Uber expecting to wait quite some time, as it was really busy.
Within a second of submitting my request I got “Your driver has arrived!” Wait - what??!! Yes the car parked up right next to where I was standing was in fact, my Uber.
Maybe this is a common thing for some people - anyway, my first time, and it tickled me.
Happens all the time to me in Los Angeles.
The ride offer is sent to the nearest driver and you can’t really throw a cat in LA without hitting an uber.
I’ve dropped someone off then got a request from the house next door to them as I was pulling out and I basically just did a circle in the street.
Got a good laugh out of everyone cuz they waved at each other and then it hit them what happened lol.
Once I was exiting an Uber on the driver’s side as someone entered on the passenger side. Another time someone was trying to get in as I was trying to get out (this happened in front of my building).
When I was in south Florida this happened three times in a row, our uber dropped someone off and we immediately got in. It was pretty sweet.
Probably had just dropped someone off where you were at or was driving by accepted immediately
As long as your driver didn't tickle you
Cheapest times for a an Uber
Key Considerations for Finding the Cheapest Times for Uber:
Off-Peak Hours: Generally, the cheapest times to use Uber are during off-peak hours, which are typically late at night (after 10 PM) and early mornings (before 7 AM) on weekdays.
Weekdays vs. Weekends: Weekdays tend to have lower demand compared to weekends, especially during business hours. Avoid peak times like Friday and Saturday nights when prices surge due to high demand.
Surge Pricing: Be aware of surge pricing, which occurs during high demand periods (e.g., concerts, events, holidays). Use the app to check for surge pricing before requesting a ride.
Promotions and Discounts: Keep an eye out for promotions or discounts offered by Uber. They often have deals during specific times or for new users.
Pooling Options: Consider using Uber Pool (if available in your area) to share rides with others, which can significantly reduce costs.
Recommendation: To save money, plan your rides during off-peak hours, avoid weekends, and check for any promotions in the app. If you can be flexible with your travel times, you can often find the best rates.
