TL;DR
Direct Negotiation with Drivers
One effective strategy is to negotiate directly with Uber drivers for a regular commute. By discussing your needs and schedule with drivers you trust, you can potentially arrange a private agreement that could be cheaper than using the app [1:1],
[2:2]. This approach allows you to undercut the Uber fare while providing the driver with a consistent income. However, be cautious as this might not be covered by Uber's insurance policies
[5:11].
Uber Pass and Discounts
Consider subscribing to Uber Pass or similar discount programs which can reduce the cost of rides [1:2]. Additionally, using affiliate programs like Acorns can offer small discounts per ride
[3:1]. Purchasing Uber gift cards at a discount or using credit cards with high earn rates can also help save money
[3:1].
Alternative Transportation Options
Exploring alternative transportation methods can be a significant money saver. Biking, walking, or using public transportation for part of your journey can reduce your reliance on Uber [1:7],
[2:4]. For longer distances, combining public transport with Uber for the final leg can cut costs significantly
[2:4].
Become an Uber Driver
If feasible, consider becoming an Uber driver yourself. Renting a car through Uber and driving enough to cover rental costs can provide access to a vehicle for personal use during off hours [2:8]. This method requires time investment but could offset transportation costs substantially.
Insurance and Safety Considerations
While negotiating directly with drivers can be beneficial, it's important to consider insurance coverage. Uber provides commercial insurance during rides booked through their platform, which may not apply to private agreements [5:11]. Ensure any arrangement made outside the app considers safety and liability issues.
Hi everyone, I'm in the unfortunately position where I'll have to use uber for awhile after I return to work. I currently have covid and won't be able to go anywhere for awhile, but that also means I won't be getting paid. When I do go back, the only places I plan to go are to work and home. I still don't think I'll be able to afford it. Are there any uber plans or discounts that I can apply to save a little money?
Walk, take a bike, ride a bus and many more. Bike is my best suggestion
I would if I lived closed to my work. My work is over 15 minutes away by car. I think it would take about three hours to walk there. There is no public transportation around me, and the weather around here gets pretty hot with a real feel of over 100.
15 minutes ride, 2 times a day is really expensive. Try the Uber pass or something like that. Also, tips are not a requirement, contrary to what everyone may say. I would still add, driver are not rich and tips are a good part of the earnings.
I would still reaffirm, biking is the best way out. Unless it is more than 1 hour of biking one way.
Factoring in the value of your time, for that distance, car is the way to go. Uber, etc costs will likely exceed that of owning a car. Ie. $30 per day round-trip (assuming no tips, which hurts drivers) X 20 workdays, that's $600 per month. Actual cost will likely be even higher.
One can finance a decent new car with lower monthly payments than that (unless your credit is very bad and/or your job income isn't documented; working under the table). Used car would cost even less, but would recommend buying new (or at least factory certified used; under 3 years old), since the price difference is relatively narrow these days.
In the meantime, as already suggested by others, biking. Alternatively, riding a scooter, moped, or electric bike. If some of the journey includes highways, this limits options, but often there are parallel routes. Assume no one can see you and figure on cars not stopping. Not fair, but it is what it is. Car is the safest way to go other than public transit (which isn't a practical option for your situation).
In short, ride share is expensive for regular, daily use. Car is likely cheaper and certainly more convenient.
The only way is to sell your car and use the money for uber/lyft. I really like being driven around and not worry about parking, traffic or anything else.
My car is only worth 300.
What car? Few cars worth that low unless it's disabled
Uber share 5 dollars ride
Ask every driver who picks you up (the ones you feel comfortable with) if they live near you and if they would be interested in taking you back and forth to work how ever many ever times per week. What you're paying Uber and what the driver makes is considerably different. You could undercut Uber and save some money and maybe even negotiate a flat weekly rate. I know alot of posters here would be incredulous about this and go on and on about insurance, blah, blah, blah, but I've done this with several riders and it became a nice source of cash income. There's also another perk, if you're a people person, you might just make a good friend. I've gained a couple of close friends that I even hang out with sometimes.
I've been thinking about doing this. Do you carry business cards? Use a 2nd cell number?
Find another job, which pays good enough or even better work online
Write where about are you and where you need to go and how much you ready to pay a month here in Reddit, and you will have better chance finding your dedicated driver
i am in a bit of a desperate situation and need any and all ideas. i'm stuck having to Uber back and forth to work (23mi away from my house, about 30 minutes) for a while and it's my only choice unfortunately, there isn't public transportation that goes where i need to go and it isn't the safest area. it's really killing my bank account and i'm trying my best. is there any way i can save money on rides? i even had the idea to order an uber to a location close to my job and then order another so it would be cheaper but unfortunately that didn't work too well. not sure what to do and its so stressful
Here is the smartest way and it’ll take trial and error so the sad news is you’re going to have to keep draining your bank account but form really good relationships with your drivers.
Talk to them about their schedule and do they do this often and judging by your miles you can ask if they live in the perspective area or not then you boom ask them to give you a ride everyday plan out a to and from this will be tricky but it’s a win win for both you and Uber driver you said 23 miles or 30 minutes give or take you’re dropping $40-$70 depending on rush hour
Drivers only getting paid what $20 maybe $30
Ask the driver and propose to them this if they can take you you’ll pay them $30 to take you and find a driver that can take you back
So in total you end up spending ehhh $60-70 a day compared to the $80-$140 you’re spending
The numbers are rough estimates but you get the big picture idea of it all
Talk to an uber driver that you feel safe with and see if you can make a deal to do a deal outside of Uber. Also see if they can match your schedule. See if you both can be on the same page.
Also keep in mind that a lot of drivers do it for flexibility of schedule so I would suggest having a backup. Maybe have one of the terms that you set with the driver being able to text 30 minutes prior to pickup time, that way if he doesn’t, it should give you plenty of time to get an Uber.
You can also try looking at prices of both Uber and Lyft before ordering one. Also, both platforms have dynamic pricing so if you have flexibility with time before and after work schedule, try and experiment with different time when ordering a ride. Basically times with less demands for rides in your locations, the cheaper the rides would be. In general, less demands for rides usually are when most people are at work or after they get home from work. From my experiences driving (haven’t driven in a while), 4-8:30am (airport & work goers), lunch times, and around 4-7pm have the most demands during weekdays. Weekends for me are always a wildcard, could be busy or could be slow.
Trust me this is a sure path to saving money. 95percent of the drivers would go the route, discounting as low as 20 to 30 percent off Uber rate.
how far can public transport get you? what i’ve been doing for ubers is taking the bus as close as possible to my destination and then ubering the rest of the way there, usually saves me about 5-7$ on a 12-14$ ride and the bus pass for the one way is only 1.75 so for both ways im saving 10-14$ on uber and only paying 3.50$ in bus fare
Ask the drivers what they are getting paid, and then just pay them more in cash.
In my area, the driver pay is about half what the customers pays.
If a driver is paranoid about getting banned from Uber, they might report this, and then you could be banned.
lol its not illegal to develop your own private driver service
Become an Uber driver.
Rent from Uber and drive for 20 hours to pay for rental.
The car is yours for your work all other time.
Interesting, on the Uber app can you set how far you’re willing to drive? Is the 20 hrs per week or month?
A week.
Hey all!
What’s the best way to save money as a rider on Uber to get the lowest price possible does anyone have any codes?
Thank you!
Take lyft , competition is better for consumers that’s what I was told . Loyalty don’t get you anywhere except a $5 credit for $500 spend.
I don’t live In the us
Where do you live ?
Catch public transportation if you cant afford rideshare
Walk
Take pool, walk.
You can get .50/ride off if you use Acorns affiliate portal before you book. Acorns costs $1/month in fees so you need to take at least 3 rides before there’s any profit potential there.
If your employer offers commuter benefits, Uber pool supports charging the debit card as a pre-tax payment option. The IRS limits you to $265/month in pretax commute diversions.
You can purchase Uber gift cards at a discount. 10-15% is possible. Otherwise, use a credit card with high earn rate like Altitude Reserve to buy Uber cash. $100 = 95 charge * 3points = 385 points, which can be redeemed for Uber charges at 1.5 cents each, so effective discount offered of 4.28 per $95 Uber cash in app purchase. So yeah. Always possible to get 10-15% off Uber gift cards.
Heads up, drivers! Just crunched the numbers on this Uber trip: $109.84 for 193.9 miles, one way. Sounds okay at first, right? But hold up. My Nissan Rogue (27-30 MPG) would burn through about $37-$39 in gas for the round trip (that's almost 400 miles!). Plus, maintenance is gonna hit me for another $39 ($0.10/mile). So, after all's said and done, I'd be looking at a measly $32-$34 profit. Seriously? For nearly 400 miles of driving? That's a hard pass from me. This ride ain't worth the grind, folks. Don't touch it.
Ridiculous
Half off and no promise of a returned ride. Hell no.
$40 ride popped up for a 66 miles and hour twenty five in traffic. Took it cause it was dropping close to home BUT when I got there I asked him what they charged and he said $90! I asked him if I should cancel and pay me direct and he said hell yeah. I got $65 and he saved $25! Very nice!!!
If you refund the rider by canceling or manually refunding, no. Theres also been a time or two where I either forgot to do so or Uber’s system wouldn’t let me - also at least once where I just didn’t want to (asshole pax that tried to pay me much less than the fare did)
Here’s a trick… start the trip after agreeing with the rider. Then once you get to the destination then you cancel the ride on your end (so there will be no charge to the rider).
This protects you in case of accident (you were doing the ride still on the platform so covered by Uber’s insurance) and then you get the pay from the rider afterwards when you cancel (assuming no issues).
Except that doesn't work. Once you leave the pickup you can only end the ride
I had a woman in car and the Waybill showed $36. She said she needed to add a final destination. I got her to add it in the app. Her new fare became $54. My Waybill changed to $42.
Surprising it even gave you that much. I won’t let them add stops without cash. Most of my trips are short so the app charges them an extra $5-10 while I get <$2, or even sometimes nothing (especially on lyft)
Never have them add the stop just take em there especially if there’s a surge, the minute they add stop with a surge on the ride in app it takes the surge away so now when I have a surge in a ride if they want to stop somewhere I just tell them it’s fine uber will adjust based on miles and minutes as my area is still on old pricing plan
Why? Does the drivers insurance not cover the ride? I thought when you sign up to be a driver you had to inform your insurance you will be driving for uber
There are different commercial insurance policies to cover drivers operating a commercial service and transporting passengers. It's often called Livery Insurance, and usually quite a bit more expensive than a personal policy. Uber covers the commercial insurance during the time you're transporting passengers, in Florida (and many other states), that coverage is $1M , but the minimum personal insurance coverage in Florida is $10k (1/100th of the coverage). The "add-on" that you get for your personal policy is a premium because your insurance company is taking on additional risk when you drive without a passenger when Uber's policy isn't covering you. They do this because an Uber driver is going to be driving more than others and each mile is a risk. This add on will NOT protect you if you provide off-app, potentially illegal, commercial rides to passengers.
Yeah. I’m sure I’ll get the downvotes, but I report the drivers who ask me to do this. It makes me extremely uncomfortable to know the ride won’t be tracked nor insured.
Why are you reporting drivers when uber takes 50-70% of the fare? Bros are just trying to get paid fairly.
No matter what , at the end of the day , after all expenses especially their vehicle rapid depreciation, Uber drivers make $7 an hour . If you think you make more than $7 an hour , then you need to take a 5th grade math.
I always wondered if Uber insurance does anything.
If you get asked “Have you ever been here?” Say, YES because if you say no they will go an alternate route that’s longer and you have to pay more. SAY YEA.
In uber the price is calculated by the app when you order a car and is already calculated by shortest distance but this is a good tip for taxis because that charges by distance
Except that if the driver takes a different route and it diverges much from the original route, the price will be recalculated. But Uber has an option to report it and get refunded(either with Uber Wallet or for a next tripe discount).
oh ok
I've never used Uber, but don't they tell you about how much it's going to be beforehand?
I meant taxis not Uber
No you didn't because your comment 2 minutes earlier than this one said you didn't know how Uber worked and that is a good tip for taxis.
I've never paid more or less for going out of route. The price is the price as stated when I order a pickup
Go out of route is not a problem. The problem is go out of route in a way it takes much more time. But the tolerance between the correct and wrong route is pretty generous.
I've never paid a dime extra waiting in traffic or going out of route. The OP is misinformed
Imagine thinking Uber worked like a taxi.
So, I get a request for an airport ride, about 10 min from my location. Obviously this means no one is in the waiting lot - it’s a short trip but the pay is only $10.75 (missed the screenshot unfortunately). I accepted out of habit but then I started thinking - if there isn’t anyone there it’s probably surging, and $10.75 seems low. I opened uber and duplicated the the trip request… $46.98 cost to rider! And giving me $10
Unreal! I canceled and sure enough, surging. On the way I got a second request, $86 for a 90 min trip. Best cancellation decision ever . They aren’t gonna get that monster fare and keep it from me.
I once got an $85 dollar ride from the airport, asked the driver how much he’s getting, and he said $30. :)
I do airports. You gotta know the prices from where you stay to the airport and now accept bullshit offers. From here it’s usually 15-25 and of course I don’t accept anything under $20. Even if it’s slow … don’t train the algorithm that you’re desperate.
I just saw $10 for a few mile trip that was relatively close by. I didn’t realize it was airport till I hit accept. But I hear you. I usually don’t accept the garbage.
Yeah in my market they started lying about pickup point now too, I noticed. New Uber strategy not sure why
Does the main road on the airport grounds not have its own name? I know when someone is going to the airport because of the name of the road, they try to obfuscate actual addresses by giving the nearest intersection but the airport doesn't have any nearby so it just gives me the name of the road, "Ted Johnson Parkway" for my nearest international (pti), similar for CLT and RDU. Plus the locations on the map are damn hard to misinterpret unless it's coming in while on another drop-off in which case the map doesn't show it right.
So you’re suggesting to sit in a car for several days without taling rides to what…show them who’s boss?
The guy is right. Ubers algorithm absolutely keeps track of how low an offer you'll accept, and they constantly try to chip away at your minimum. I got desperate one time and broke my $1 per mile $10 minimum, and im still dealing with the reprocussions. The same exact rides they would send for $10 they started capping at $9.60....then $9.30..and so on. Im healing it now by only taking $1 per mile trips from the airport, but that one day of desperation affected me for months.
I was near the Morgan wallen concert last night and it was surging. I was getting offers for $20 rides to somewhere 23 miles away then I looked at what it’d cost the rider and uber was charging them $103. Fucking bs
>I looked at what it’d cost the rider
No, you looked at what it would cost YOU.
You should’ve told them to cancel and you’d do it for $70
I got lucky, I took someone there for $100 cash and they paid me $150 Zelle on the way back because of the traffic. We were stuck there for 1h30 min
the newest Uber scam if a UE has been sitting is bump the base to like 40$ for 4 miles then cancel as the driver gets in the parking lot and stack it as a 2$ order for some other driver. had that happen yesterday uber said "customer cancelled you get no pay" which is bull shit I saw the other on the counter walk off with another driver. Customer waiting 1 hour isn't going to cancel once the driver gets the order.
Let's say the ride is expected to be $50 pre-tip. In this situation, the driver would make less than $25 + whatever tip you give (say $10), so $35.
When the driver arrives to pick you up, tell them you're willing to cancel the ride and pay them $40 in cash. You will be hit with a $5 cancellation fee on the app, but you'll still save money, and the driver will make more than they would have otherwise.
Of course the downside is that you have to trust the driver to actually take you to your destination, and not get in an accident. So this is not something that I recommend every time. You have to make a judgment call based on vibe.
disclaimer: for probably obvious safety reasons, I dont recommend this for single female riders with a male driver
edit: to everyone saying "all this to save $5?", no you save more the longer the drive is, this was what you call "an example". Also, you're doing the driver a solid by helping them make more than they would have otherwise.
Then when you get to your destination, hop out without paying. Even more unethical
I’ve done something similar, but different circumstances.
When partying late night on the outskirts of certain cities, it can difficult to get an Uber/Lyft to pick you up to go home. (Drivers cant be found etc)
So me and my friends have gotten the personal number for the driver who dropped is off and paid extra for them to pick us up later… hasn’t failed once, but as OP noted, huge liabilities involved.
We've taken the personal number of a driver who runs their own local car service in our area. The driver became known to us and started becoming loyal, as they saw us as a consistent customer. And acts of little kindness took us a long way.
Also, since they run a local car service, their reputation is at stake - so even if they send someone else in their place, it's someone reliable. The only thing is their fares aren't cheap. But in some areas where sometimes Uber is unreliable, this is a good option.
I did this in Germany once. My taxi driver was very friendly driving me to the hotel and wanted to pick me up in the morning to go to the airport. We agreed on a time and a price. Then he never showed up.
I had a taxi driver in Anchorage, AK who we would hit up for rides before Uber was a thing there. Felix. Dude loved android phones and my best friend was a droid user so they would just chat the whole time about gingerbread or whatever the os is called.
People would be waiting outside the bar for like an hour and we’d just hit him up and feel like VIPs
I think Uber caught on. The cancellation fee last time was the whole ass trip fare
Yeah i think you have to cancel within 5 mins of when the driver starts heading towards you
This is really easy for Uber to track and identify.
I work for a similar firm, generally the driver gets deactivated and banned, never seen an impact to the passenger before
I do this all the time when I get out if a venue super late at night with like 100+ people also looking for ubers.
I go up to ever Uber Lyft driver and offer cash to cancel what ever the current person is and take us instead.
In Cancun, the drivers propose this on every trip.
I’ve had it proposed to me a few times, but only ever when I’m traveling for work and have to use the company card 😭 I always tip well of course.
Good luck robbing me, I have a CCW. Yea, I uber packing a 9mm, so what. It's against their terms of service, but it's my car and life.
I’m curious. I’m taking my dog to his next vet appointment via an uber. Thing is, we’ll be walking three miles anyway that morning for his daily walk. I figured we might as well just walk those three miles in the direction of his vet before calling the uber to save a few bucks.
Thing is, in the past sometimes I’ve been about to call an uber and then decided to walk half way (enjoying weather, stopping at shops on the way, etc) only to then call an uber and then see that it’s more expensive despite the distance being a couple miles less.
I know the pricing is dynamic and always changing, but I wonder if there are any general guidelines on how to keep costs low. Requesting at a time when others are less likely to request might be one. Any others?
Like you said, requesting outside of the general commute times (4am-9am & 2pm-6pm) is definitely cheaper. Also, not being in a hurry for a ride helps a lot. For example, do a price check about a half hour to an hour before you need to go and I guarantee, if you don’t book right away, they will send you a notification within a few minutes that says the ride has dropped in price. The longer you can wait, the better. Good luck!
really? I have never gotten a notification that the price has dropped. Only that it’s gone up. This is from callling ubers at all times for years.
Dang that sucks, maybe your market is just super busy all the time. I’m in Phoenix, AZ and there’s definitely times when it’s really slow especially outside the commute times. Or maybe it’s because you use Uber more frequently than me so they’re being predatory because they think you rely on it.
Usually right after the hour is cheaper than right before... for example : 8:02AM is generally cheaper than 7:45. I am a driver in a big city. Standing on the side of the street in the direction of your destination and avoiding busy intersections.
This is helpful!
You know uber used to have the option of walking up to five minutes so the driver could have the most efficient route. I’m annoyed they stopped that.
I live on a one way street that is flanked by other one way streets so it really annoys me when a driver has to drive several blocks around to get to my home when it would be so much faster if I just walked to the end of the block for pickup.
I always text them and offer to meet them there so they don’t have to go all the way around but usually they don’t check their texts and drive around anyway.
I deliberately set the pickup location on the easiest road to pull over for the same reason, and because the street that you turn off of onto mine is a narrow 1.5 car wide 2 way little street. Every parking session is like playing chicken because drivers love to speed through that way to cut lights.
It’s a pita with my small mazda3 hatchback. I won’t subject anyone picking me up to that risk. Plus, I’ll try and set the pickup location to the direction of where I’m going as it’s a major artery where I live
I am glad they stopped that. People just wanted a cheaper ride but never walked. We had to drive more than if they had just called a normal ride and waste a guaranteed extra 5 minutes for them uncompensated. They steal some savings at the expense of the driver's time and resources and rate drivers low for going to the designated pickup spot.
Depends on your market. By walking, you may be walking into a surged area or walking out of a surged area. It’s all about supply and demand. If you’re in a heavily populated and bustling area, it’s just a crap shoot. If you’re patient and have some extra time to waste, just keep refreshing your app until the price comes down.
yup!
When I do enable it, I keep paper towels, cleaning cloths, sanitizing wipes, and a small bag. Portable vacuum if it’s charged, otherwise, I’m typically not far from home base as most uberpets have been my general neighborhoods. There’s a ton do with dogs and eating out. And entire events around pets and the outdoors
I grew up with a variety of dogs being transported in cars. For me, it’s no big deal
I don't take most rides with dogs. Too many bad experiences.
If you are that cheap, please take the bus.
Man, this is just what every Uber driver wants. A dog, obviously on a leash and not in a carrier, that's been walked 3 miles already, plus the sweaty human that's been walking him. Yep, my idea of paradise...
Just bc the customer wants to wait to save money doesn’t mean the driver wants to get paid less. Foh with this bs uber
NYC is NEVER worth it
I take people into Manhattan a lot. It usually works out ok. And tips are decent as well. A lot of people almost flinch when they watch me see their destination lol.. mostly from ewr. I think they generally are thankful i don't give them a hard time and it usually ends up paying ok. Just my 2 cents. Once in a while at rush hour and what not I will tell them no. But off peak hours, manhattan and the Bronx are in play for me
Without fail I always hit traffic and not knowing the payout is never worth the risk to me. Especially if it’s anywhere on Long Island and you have to eat those tolls on the way back while also dead heading out. I’m from Dutchess Co area and just last week I took someone 2 hours to LGA and got $0 for a tip. I hope her flight was massively delayed lol.
They’ll be waiting and saving alright when no one picks them up!
If was heading into the city sure but any other scenario. Laughable
Even if you drive back home, thats $40 an hour
It’s easily a 5 hour trip there and back with the traffic. Idk how you think it’s $40 an hour 🤣
They still waiting
how to save money on uber rides
Here are some effective strategies to save money on Uber rides:
Use Uber Pool: Opt for Uber Pool (or UberX Share) to share your ride with others going in the same direction. This can significantly reduce your fare.
Compare Prices: Check other ride-sharing apps like Lyft to see if they offer better rates for your trip.
Ride During Off-Peak Hours: Avoid surge pricing by riding during non-peak hours. Early mornings or late evenings on weekdays are often cheaper.
Promotions and Discounts: Keep an eye out for promotions, discounts, or referral codes that can lower your fare. Sometimes, credit card companies offer cashback or discounts for ride-sharing services.
Plan Your Route: If possible, plan your trips to avoid heavy traffic areas, which can increase ride times and costs.
Use the Fare Estimate Feature: Before requesting a ride, use the fare estimate feature in the app to compare different ride options and choose the most economical one.
Consider Subscription Services: If you use Uber frequently, consider their subscription service (like Uber Pass) that offers discounts on rides for a monthly fee.
Split Fares: If you're traveling with friends, use the fare-splitting feature to share the cost of the ride.
Recommendation: Combining Uber Pool with off-peak travel times can yield the most savings. Always check for promotions and consider using a credit card that offers rewards for ride-sharing expenses.
