Best Time to Buy Baseball Tickets

TL;DR The best time to buy baseball tickets is often right before the game starts, as prices tend to drop significantly due to sellers' desperation. However, consider factors such as game popularity and promotional events.

Timing for Ticket Purchases

Many commenters suggest waiting until close to game time to purchase tickets, as prices tend to drop significantly due to sellers wanting to offload unsold tickets [1:1], [2:5], [3:4]. This strategy works well for less popular games or weekday matches against weaker teams [3:1], [3:5]. However, for high-demand games or those with special promotions, it's advisable to purchase tickets in advance to avoid missing out [3:1].

Choosing a Ticket Platform

While StubHub has been a popular choice for last-minute ticket purchases, recent updates have caused issues with ticket transfers [1:6], [1:7]. Alternatives like Ticketmaster, SeatGeek, Gametime, and TickPick are recommended [1:6], [5:5], [5:8]. It's important to compare prices across platforms, as fees can vary significantly [2:10].

Buying at the Box Office

Purchasing tickets directly from the box office can be advantageous, especially if you're looking to avoid service charges [5:4]. However, this option may not provide interactive seat maps, and availability can be limited for high-demand games [5:4].

Considerations for Game Popularity

Game popularity and the presence of promotional items can greatly affect ticket availability and pricing. For games with coveted giveaways or major matchups, buying tickets ahead of time is recommended to secure your spot [3:1], [5:2]. Conversely, for lower-demand games, waiting until closer to game time can result in cheaper tickets [3:5], [5:12].

Additional Tips

For veterans, there may be options for free or discounted tickets through organizations like Vet Tix or local initiatives [4:4], [4:5]. Additionally, exploring resale groups on social media platforms can sometimes yield better deals [3:2].

Planning on going to tomorrow afternoon's game against the Padres. Is there a particular window of time where you can get the most bang for your buck? Assuming Stubhub is still the best route?

Hopebeat · 3 years ago

I would wait until as close to game time as you can. Afternoon game with this team, you won't have much competition. Plenty of tickets still available on the Cubs site right now as well.

You could also buy from the guys on the street near the red line and avoid the ludicrous Cubs / StubHub fees. They should have plenty available and will haggle. If you don't like their prices, you can always fall back to the official site or StubHub.

I usually wait until maybe the 1st inning starts and I’ve gotten some pretty sick tickets for super cheap off StubHub💀 They really drop the prices once the game starts

Also a possibility. I'm pretty hardcore about not missing first pitch but it's a viable strategy.

Stubhub is definitely NOT the best route right now. They updated their app about a week ago and it has been a nightmare. Fans not getting their tickets in time for games (even instant transfer) and season ticket holders unable to sell their tickets. I would go with another vendor like Ticketmaster, Seat Geek, Game Time, etc. for the foreseeable future. Just take a look around the web and see for yourself the debacle I’m speaking of.

Glad I’m not the only one with this, I can’t believe how bad the new StubHub app is. It’s been my go to for like 5 years now for last minute tickets, and after using it yesterday to get tickets for tonight (thankfully got my instant transfers right away, didn’t realize that was an issue) I’ll probably be moving to Gametime or something. Absolute disaster on their part.

Yea, I just bought MLB tickets on Stubhub a couple of months ago, no problem. Purchased some last month for a game that is coming up and can’t get access to them. Glad you were fortunate enough to get yours. It just amazes me how tight-lipped Stubhub has been about the whole issue. I guarantee a class action lawsuit is coming.

Gonna be hot AF still, prob cheap tix. I’d check stub hub when I get to Wrigleyville and buy from there if they’re cheaper than the box office

Time? 5 minutes before the game starts.

Site? Any of the reseller sites where the sellers will be desperate 5 minutes before the game starts.

This is what I always do. Bonus if you wait until a few innings into the game at a bar across from the stadium or something

Any reseller though I've had some sketchy experiences with SeatGeek (sometimes they don't give you the tickets till like an hour before the game and one time they refused to give them to me through the ballpark app which is pretty much required nowadays). I haven't had a bad experience with StubHub yet but that's always subject to change.

As far as time that depends on the team/matchup/day/time. If it's like a Wednesday game between two shitty teams then right before the game would be best. If it's an anticipated Friday night matchup you'd probably be better off if you had the foresight to buy them a few weeks out and maybe even from the team themself.

SeatGeek has really fallen off, they used to have the best prices (and promos) but the prices are in line with the rest now and I've gotten so many "confirmed" tickets only to be cancelled hours later from them.

Seat geek's fees are way, way up now too. We're hitting Fenway in September and I found a set of tickets on Vivid Seats & Tickpick for basically the same price but like $20 per seat more on Seat geek (and the list price was the same as vivid seats).

Depending on the team, the box office is a solid move if the games don’t sell out. No fees is a plus.

I’m not sure how it else elsewhere, but Minute Maid is digital only. At the box office they just direct you to the MLB app. It’s garbage.

Minute Maid park is fun to buy tickets from.

You have to get the tickets days in advance before the spots get taken, and when you find a spot with a bunch of open seats only like a day before the game, just for you to go to the game and see that you are in the most packed area in the park

13 upvotes on reddit

Feels like it depends where you want to sit. If you just want in then last minute tends to be a good idea because sellers get desperate

Usually from the team in advance, but that's how road Yankee games go.

Who waits till game day to buy tickets?

Posted by Kingofthediamond6320 · in r/Dodgers · 4 months ago

Will be on vacation mid May for a week day game (Tuesday-Betts bobblehead vs A's). I've always waited till I'm actually in the area just in case I have flight issues etc.

Just was kind of wondering if there is normally still a lot of tickets available by that morning or at least the prior day.

Since it matters I'll only need 1 ticket. Ideally like to sit in loge section front row or I get a dugout club seat. I know prices have gone up so I'm not sure I'll do the dug out club this time around especially if it's over $500.

Last year I bought a reserve level ticket for game 1 of the NLCS an hour before the game started for $95.

I drove all the way up from San Diego, parked at Union Station, and searched through every ticket site. I ended up getting my ticket off a Dodgers ticket exchange group on Facebook (the only reason I still have Facebook).

If I go to a game alone, I usually do that method. If I'm going with a group or if it's a game against a bigger team or there's a really popular giveaway, I'll buy tickets ahead of time.

It depends on the team they're playing - I struggled to get tix when the Yankees were in town. But for the most part, regular and resale tickets are usually available

If there is a coveted promotional item or a specific matchup, I always plan ahead and get tickets before the game is sold out or the resellers up their asking price out of fan’s desperation to go to those games.

If the opponent is meh, it’s a weekday, or maybe also a day game, then I can hold out and buy tixs within hours of first pitch just so that I can avoid boredom at home for that day.

Get to stadium, go on the TickPick app and purchase there for as long you can wait. 10 minutes before first pitch you will find cheaper ticket than if you purchase when gate opens. I've done it when buying tickets and selling my season tickets.

Where’s the best place to buy Reds tickets?

Posted by AAonthebutton · in r/Reds · 5 months ago

Currently watching the Reds beat up on the Rangers. I’ve never been to a Reds game and I’d like to purchase tickets now that my son is three and is old enough to go to a game. Admittedly I haven’t been to a sporting event in a very long time. I’m looking to buy tickets for the Yankees in June. I grew up in New York and got free tickets to Yankee games because I’m a veteran. When I was in college, I probably went to over 100 games. I’ve checked the ESPN third-party ticketing app the Gametime app and these prices seemed very, but they don’t seem very expensive. I also have no idea what are good seats. I don’t know enough people in the area to find season tickets someone would be willing to sell. So I’m just checking to see the best place to buy Reds tickets thanks in advance. Sorry if this is not allowed I’ll delete.

Reds.com is great except the prices will probably be a bit higher. The seat selection is easy and you can check the views. You can also buy a parking pass with the tickets. I'm very anal about the seats I get so I don't use third party apps.

There isn't really a bad seat in the place. Generally, in left field you would be in the sun for longer if that would bother you. The upper deck in left field is bleachers so it's the cheapest

If you are local and can be flexible with short notice tickets, the Armed Forces Ticket Association sometimes gets Reds tickets to give out. It's been awhile since we were eligible but might be worth getting on their mailing list.

Also watch for the library summer reading kickoff parties. Not only will they be fun for your kid, they usually give out vouchers for discount tickets.

I just buy from reds.com. They aren’t that expensive, so I don’t want to run any risk buying from a third party.

Fellow vet, if you walk up to the box office on Monday-Thursday, they used to give you free tickets. Haven’t utilized that in years as now have a family and harder to coordinate seats. They used to just look at the CAC and have you decent seats. Again, unsure if that is still valid

Thanks for the info! Yea that’s how I got so many Yankee tix. I’d go m-t as long as it wasn’t an AL East game I’d get a free ticket. But I was always by myself. I’d always get better tickets than when I paid! But that was 2009-2013 so no idea if they still do that anymore.

It’s a jersey giveaway night so tix are usually more expensive. An option is to get the cheapest seat available online and then by 3rd or 4th inning ask your friends if they have open seats around them. Then you could join them and finish out the game together.

6 upvotes on reddit
Depressed_Sports-Fan · 3 months ago

Prices will likely be cheaper on third party sites. The Dodgers do not care if tickets don’t sell. Their prices right now on their website will likely be the same tonight.

Individuals selling tickets on third party sites will continue dropping prices up until game time. So I’d go with tickpick or a similar site.

35 upvotes on reddit
S
Spyerx · 3 months ago

This is the way. For 'lower demand' games the people with season tickets would rather sell them than not, and you'll see prices drop as it gets closer to the game time, very often below face values.

Is tonight a "lower demand" game night?

Ok thanks. I use seat geek, stub hub... they all seem pretty much the same. Guess Im wondering if tnite is a "hot" game night...

6 upvotes on reddit
Depressed_Sports-Fan · 3 months ago

I noticed another one of your comments taking about supply and demand. I’ll break it down for you.

90% of sellers don’t want to take a complete loss, while 10% are ok taking a complete loss. Those in the 90% will drop price and drop price to try and get them to sell. The 10% refuse and leave their prices elevated. The 90% usually see their tickets sell

So as game day is approaching, the 90% drop and drop and drop. On game day, usually an hour ish before the game, prices start to sky rocket. Why is that? Because the 90% have all sold their tickets, while the 10% are the only tickets left for sale.

There are no service charges for tickets you buy at the box office. I had to go there to buy tickets because of a hiccup with Stubhub who couldn’t move my tickets into the mlb app which you need to get into the stadium. Stubhub simply said sorry for the inconvenience, we’ll refund you in a couple of days & Good luck… this was on Ohtani 50/50 bobblehead night.

Only downside to the box office is they have a map of the seats on a paper and it isn’t interactive like you can see on Stubhub, but overall I had a good experience with the box office!

Best time to buy "possible" postseason tickets?

Posted by PrizeArticle1 · in r/baseball · 2 years ago

Wondering what the best strategy is when purchasing post season tickets. Is it generally a better deal to buy them before the team makes it to the game? Or wait until there is an actual game confirmed? Obviously I would think buying beforehand would be better, but sometimes logic doesn't make sense when buying tickets. Thanks!

Just for example. I bought tickets to the Raptors Eastern Conference Finals Game 3 against the Bucks halfway through Game 7 against the 76ers. I was lower bowl and got the tickets for about 175 each. The tickets next to us after Kawhi’s shot went in were going for 350+

Best time to buy is face value at ticket sales but in fairness that’s often hard as lots of people want them, you are competing with scalper bots and Ticketmaster screwing up. Next best time is before the games are confirmed to happen.

It varies alot depending on what you're trying to buy. Assuming by "best" you mean "least expensive" then yes - for new releases, they will typically be a little cheaper a couple months in the offseason, and will generally get cheaper a few months after release (and especially once other major releases or the same product's next year has been released).

I don't think older cards (i.e., players who are now retired) vary much from in-season to off-season.

Of course, if you're looking for specific cards (especially low-numbered cards or completing a rainbow) the "best" time to buy is immediately after release, because you're far less likely to be able to get what you want if you wait. It won't be cheap though.

As a season ticket holder that sells on Stubhub/Vivid, the price on game day always goes down. I always list my tix at high prices way in advance and sometimes they sell. But then I follow the market pricing as the game gets close. Day of game it seems to be a race to the bottom as we keep lowering prices to get at least something for the tix we can't use. The only difference in a Yankees game is that the unsold inventory will be lower so your choices may be limited. But if you keep checking you can find deals.

Are early ticket sales slow this year?

I normally buy tickets to several games during the Pitchers & Catcher's flash sale they've had for at least the last several years on report day. I've never noticed this flash sale be continued for an extra day, but I had an email stating it was continuing today.

This year I didn't buy during this sale, partially as a token protest of this off season and partially because I don't think I'll be able to make it to a weekday game this year. I'd be curious how many others didn't buy tickets yesterday and how early ticket sales are doing?

I hear ya. I’m a huge Cardinals/baseball fan and I really do love working at the stadium and getting to watch BP and being paid to be at the games. The slim silver lining is that they call bartenders off by seniority, so with each season I (theoretically) would be moved further down the list to be called off. But there are only so many people newer than me and if they gotta close off 10 suites I’m gonna be affected anyway ¯_(ツ)_/¯

The fact that you can still buy opening day tickets from the Cardinals website should be a sign. At this point I will be surprised if opening day is a sell out.

Opening day was on sale for quite a while last year too if I recall.

them charging $75 for nosebleed on opening day is ridiculous. other than the 2 covid years, i've been to every opening day since 2007. between the lack of ownership/mgmt changes and stupid ticket sales, i may be skipping for the first time voluntarily.

I’m not that doom and gloom. I’m pumped to see the young guys get time on the field. I want to see a full year of burly at mostly DH hitting pissrockets

I’m not going to a game this year unless they fire management. We are getting Wrigley’d. They just put just enough of a product out there to keep people coming.

Fuck this. This is the St. Louis cardinals not the damn marlins.

While I get the sentiment, we are finally doing something instead of sitting on our hands and pretending we are a WS contender. They need a few years to get out of the terrible extensions we have signed recently. Hopefully in 2 years we will be back to our old ways (the good kind)

The team isn't really doing "something". They said they would but Arenado, Gray, Contreras and Helsley are still on the team. Mo is doing what he always does and is shooting for a 500 team in a weak division and hopes that's enough for the playoffs.

best time to buy baseball tickets

Key Considerations for Buying Baseball Tickets:

  1. Season Timing:

    • Early in the Season: Tickets are often cheaper at the beginning of the season (April-May) as teams are still establishing their performance.
    • Mid-Season Promotions: Look for promotional games or special events during the summer months (June-August) when teams might offer discounts.
  2. Day of the Week:

    • Weekday Games: Generally, tickets for weekday games (Monday-Thursday) are less expensive than weekend games (Friday-Sunday).
    • Avoid Holidays: Prices can spike around holidays or special events (e.g., Independence Day, Opening Day).
  3. Last-Minute Purchases:

    • Day of the Game: Sometimes, you can find great deals on tickets just before the game starts, as sellers want to fill seats. However, this is risky if you have a specific game in mind.
  4. Dynamic Pricing:

    • Many teams use dynamic pricing, meaning ticket prices fluctuate based on demand. Monitor prices over time to find the best deal.
  5. Secondary Market:

    • Check resale platforms (like StubHub, SeatGeek, or Vivid Seats) for potentially lower prices, especially as the game date approaches.

Recommendation:

  • If you have flexibility, consider buying tickets during the early season or for weekday games. Keep an eye on promotions and be willing to check secondary markets for deals. Setting alerts for specific games can also help you snag tickets at a lower price.
