Best Training Routines for Sub-Zero in Mortal Kombat 1

TL;DR Focus on mastering his 50/50 mix-ups, practice combos individually before chaining them, and utilize resources like video tutorials to refine your skills.

Understanding Sub-Zero's Playstyle

Sub-Zero is known for his 50/50 mix-up style, which involves alternating between overhead and low attacks to keep opponents guessing [2:3][3:2]. This approach can be particularly effective in creating pressure and forcing mistakes from opponents. His playstyle may not be heavy on pressure or keepaway tactics, but mastering the mix-ups can lead to significant advantages during matches.

Combo Practice

Practicing combos is essential for improving your gameplay with Sub-Zero. A recommended combo is B3, 2, Freeze, B1, 4, 3, enhanced slide, which deals decent damage [2:1]. It's important to practice these combos individually to get a feel for their timing and execution [3:1]. Once comfortable, you can start experimenting with chaining different moves together to create more complex sequences.

Utilizing Special Moves

Sub-Zero has several special moves that can enhance his effectiveness in battle. The ice ball move, when meter burned, can eat projectiles, making it useful against zoning characters [2:2]. Additionally, his ability to cancel certain strings into ice ball can lead to full combos from anti-air situations [2:2]. Understanding how to use these moves strategically can significantly improve your gameplay.

Learning Resources

Watching tutorials and guides can provide valuable insights and strategies for playing Sub-Zero effectively. There are comprehensive video guides available that break down his combos and offer tips and tricks for mastering his character [4:1]. These resources can help you understand the nuances of his abilities and optimize your playstyle.

Adapting to Game Changes

As Mortal Kombat 1 is relatively new, it's important to stay updated on any changes or patches that may affect Sub-Zero's performance. Engaging with community discussions and keeping an eye on updates can ensure that you're aware of any adjustments that might impact your training routines [2:3].

I like sub zero in this game too tbh I'm trying to learn Liu Kang but he's kinda difficult to learn

Imo I find him pretty easy. The only one that really feels difficult it’s kenshi. He just seems complex

Nah. All I see are a bunch of lame sub zero players that spam shit. He’s not fun at all.

Yep. One of his kick strings is super safe and super fast. They can just spam that and they’ve won

I wouldn’t call him bad but he was a lot better damage wise during the stress test. Maybe you found him godly cause nobody could best your 50/50s?

He wasn’t godly sure but I was godly with him, I don’t mean to sound arrogant but I was beating supposed “meta characters” with sub zero and he was legit B tier at best if I remember correctly, I was beating noobs mileenas lui kangs Rambo’s Fujins jades, I was good asf but here he’s so slow in the time it takes for me to one move, someone fast like lui kang can pull off a 20% kombo, he was also better in the streets test and betas because he was in a select few roster 💀

Can someone give me some tips for Sub Zero?

Posted by ZeroZillions · in r/MortalKombat · 6 years ago

Sub Zero's my favorite character by a few thousand miles but he doesn't really seem very good in MK11 so far. His combos are low damage, he seems to have no pressure options (3,3 knocks the opponent so far away there's not much follow up).

I was a Cryomancer main in MKX but he just doesn't seem to have the same style. Death circle barrage and the arctic trap seem to be reallt fun to force your opponent to guess when you'll stop attacking them and punish them for unblocking too early, but to do serious damage it seems like you need to have rising ice and/or deep freeze.

Am I bad, or does he need a buff? Could someone give me a pointer or 3?

Dude Sub is pretty good in this game he gets a lot of guaranteed damage that you can't break out of. He is great at whiff punishing. One of his ice ball moves eats projectiles when meter burned. He can slide punish projectiles and he has some extremely good pokes and anti airs.

You can anti air really far with back 2 and cancel that into ice ball to get a full combo from an anti air.

You can cancel his overhead into ice ball, cancel back 3 2 into ice ball which is a low starter. His forward 4 is super good for pressure and a lot of his strings are either safe or can be used to punish.

I wouldn't say he is the best character in the game it is still really early but Sub Zero is definitely no slouch in this game he is really good imo.

Also he does great damage from anywhere especially in the corner of you have his move that pops up that let's you really extend combos.

I would say though his tournament variations are kind of lame.

Z
ZeroZillions · OP · 6 years ago

Thanks for the heads up. But maybe I'm not using him right because his B2 almost always whiffs on jumping enemies for me. Also I don't think he has many strings with more than -4 on block, which isn't bad but not great either. Also the overhead into ice ball requires you to amplify it which is too bad because then you have to take deep freeze in 2 of your ability slots.

Is he more of a corner dominator again in this game though?

1 upvotes on reddit
GodtierMacho · 6 years ago

Back 2 shouldn't be used if the opponent is too close all though if they are it's fast enough to do a quick back dash into B2 if your reactions are on point.

Also deep freeze is great honestly I would use it, it really helps me in a lot of MU against zones as I said it eats projectiles and it's hella fast so it's super easy to connect on reaction to most projectiles.

A lot of his strings not the full strings are pretty safe because you can either block or get a free D1 although I may be wrong but I tend to pretty much oppress my opponents doing this and they get antsy and press buttons really quick.

You should watch some pro sub players play so you can see more or less what his gameplan is I would say he is best played patiently in neutral and once you get your offense going just smoother your opponent.

It's never bad to have a secondary character though for those tricky MUs

Sup dood. So since the game is still new, things may change really soon. Imo Subs isn’t heavy on pressure. Neither up close, or keepaway pressure. He’s, so far, strongest in his 50/50 overhead or low hit confirms. https://youtu.be/f5q8yNj2nKE Since you played mkx, i assume you know tom brady. if you dont tho, he’s the #1 subzero. his channel has some really good knowledge right now.

It took me a while to sit down and get down the material on the video. About 3 hrs prolly of just sitting down, understanding, then putting in the muscle and visual memory. You could probably do it faster. good luck

Not only do many of the brutalities seem to lack creativity, but the explosion brutalities seem to lack impact in MK1 too. It’s more like they just reduce to pulp and all the bones fall on the floor in about the same spot. The older games seemed to have greater explosions than the current game.

Personally brutalities are stellar this game when they aren’t like a random explosion. Some really work like noob’s but some are so random like kitana’s.

We get insanely good ones like shang’s acid stab, and mid ones like the random kabooms

Interesting because it seems like Kuai was always a brutal and harsh fighter. In MK1 I see they made attempts to switch it around to make it look like Kuai is now gentle and sub is more harsh and brutal as a fighter (in personality too) but sub seems so harsh, quick and brutal here.

Mastery: Mortal Kombat (ARC)

Posted by SerJaker · in r/RetroAchievements · 4 months ago
post image

Took me 3 years because I've been playing it off and on randomly whenever I'm in the mood. I've probably played this 300+ hours throughout my life on various consoles and on the actual arcade machine. One of my favourite games ever and I still think it holds up today.

Pretty fun set however grinding 40 matches just to get a chance to fight Reptile (and potentially lose) is a massive pain in the ass. I've only ever fought and beat Reptile on the actual arcade machine once. The AI is notoriously cheap in old MK games and it's very easy to take bullshit damage. To fight Reptile, you only get one chance ever 40 matches, which will make shadows appear in the background in the pit stage, and you can't use block and have to perform a fatality all while getting a double flawless victory. If you fuck up you have to wait another 40 matches.

The achievement where you can't use kicks is also quite rough especially against Goro where Jump kicks are basically a necessity. However Kano, Johnny Cage and Raiden all have really good jump punches.

Do you want to get better without hitting training mode? Here are 5 things you can do to improve!

Posted by shaker_21 · in r/StreetFighter · 1 year ago

I get it. Sometimes you just don't wanna sit in training mode and run drills to improve your reactions, combos, or whatever. I've been there. Outside of going to training mode to practice some setups and occasionally testing what options I have in some situations, I rarely sit in training mode (not even to queue for ranked since I queue for ranked on the menu like a monster).

Well, I've achieved a moderate degree of success in this game (a few top 3 placements in my locals and 1.6k MR), so I thought I could help some people who are like me, because outside of training mode, there are SOOOOOOO MANY resources available to almost everyone.

  1. If you're struggling with a matchup, watch replays in the game. The game makes it so easy to check replays. I filter by MR and by whatever character I'm playing, then I'll check that person's replays for the matchup I'm struggling with, and I'll see what they're doing. 9 times out of 10, I'll find a lot of useful stuff. Sometimes it won't be an easy solution, or even a solution to the particular problem I was looking for, but I'll learn other angles to approach the matchup from that end up being much more valuable in the long run.
  2. If you don't want to look for replays in the game, just look for replays on YouTube. Search for a pro player who plays your character, and you'll probably find something useful. This is one of the easiest things you can do. You can watch and learn while on the toilet, or on your commute. Same things as #1, but way more accessible.
  3. Search for a character Discord server, or check Reddit. Usually you can run a search on the character or issue you're having, so you don't need to ask anything yourself. I recommend being more judicious with what advice you take in though. While people of all ranks probably have some insight to share, insight from people of higher ranks, like 1.7k+ MR, is usually more likely to be (a) correct, (b) tested in a wider range of situations or against different options, and (c) be more rooted in fundamentally sound strategic depth. Some people will respond to those insights with more complaints, even after someone more knowledgeable with the game/character presents good solutions, and it might make it look like those solutions are therefore not worth adopting. Ignore those people. Improving in a fighting game is incredibly simple, since every set of interactions is deterministic; assume everything that goes wrong in your game is fundamentally your fault, and understand that you have the agency and capacity to correct those faults.
  4. If you're the type who's willing to watch your own replays, watch them and follow the James Chen philosophy: Ask yourself to explain every decision you made, and if you can't think of a reason why or if the reason is bad, you'll know what to work on. Justify every button you pressed. Justify every time you backed away or jumped. Why did you press that button at that range? Why did you go for that combo instead of another one? Why did you jump when you haven't earned your jumps? Why did you spend meter there? It'll help you improve your decision-making for when you're actually playing.
  5. If you can't be bothered to watch your own replays, TALK TO YOURSELF WHEN YOU PLAY. This helps a lot. Thoughts can stick better when you verbalize them. Try to stick to things you need to adjust within the set or in the next round. "I shouldn't have jumped" "I should have punished that with a jab combo" "The opponent keeps using a reversal after they block a jump-in, so I should block" "I'm getting shimmied in the corner, so I should wake up with a crouching medium kick to punish their walking" "They have less than 3 bars, so I can afford to move more and tank a crouching medium kick drive rush combo since they're forced to either let me walk more or burn out". You'll be surprised at how much faster you'll adapt.

Don't take any of this as a sign to avoid doing your labwork. Sitting in training mode is almost always a good thing when you know what you need to practice. In fact, I think my avoidance of training mode is what's holding me back from 1.7k MR, so I'll be making adjustments to my approach to things pretty soon. But I hope this helps some of you.

One thing people should really consider is also just adding and seeking players of characters you need matchup experience against. Get long sets with them in custom rooms, ask them what you should or could be doing. Some characters are very rare to find a good player on in this game just randomly but you can use discord servers or just add people you do find when it happens to play more.

But it is worth noting that there's only so far you can go without repetition, conditioning, and timing that training mode can accelerate through extensive use.

2 upvotes on reddit
Watamelonna · 1 year ago

Also, if you are lower in rank, watching aaster replay probably won't do much to you.

Find replays of people just one or two rank higher than you, you can do that with ease in CFN. You can even filter down to the control type and the opposing character.

Of course they aren't all good players but you can learn to decipher between good and bad plays and avoid the bad plays yourself.

Good advice and a good point at the end that these are not substitutes for doing your hands on training. It's like watching a million piano playing videos, studying music theory, then claiming to be an excellent piano player without touching the keys.

The single biggest thing that helped catapult me up ranks was showing replays to higher level players I knew. I did this whenever i got stuck on the way to Master and each time someone pointed out obvious mistakes I was completely missing. This is especially true before Platinum. Better players will instantly see your biggest flaws and knowing exactly what to work on is huge.

You don't know what you don't know. Go on a character specific discord, or even just make a thread here if you're stuck. There's a surprising amount of people (myself included) that are happy to share knowledge.

  1. Learn to block.
  2. Try VERY BASIC COMBOS (build that muscle memory)
  3. Don't do online matches, play the CPU on hard.
  4. Watch pro's play and pay attention to their movement.
  5. Have fun, play for a bit, take a break. The road to be decent at this game is long and hard.

All good advice, I can't remember if blocking works the same way with MK11, but if you block while standing, someone can kick you or do a lower attack, but if you block while crouching, they can do an attack like a jump kick or a higher attack, so remember to use the right block for the right kind of attacks.

It depends on what you're getting good for. If you just want to enjoy the game on single player, you need to practice against higher level AI, understand its behavior, and work on your best combos with the characters you wanna play as.

If you want to get good competitively, you need to go get your ass kicked repeatedly by people who are better than you and pay close attention to what they are doing right and what you are doing wrong. This is what will reinforce good habits and help you get rid of bad ones.

Remember that human opponents and AI opponents are two different beasts. Don't assume that just because you're good at beating one that it means you'll be good at beating the other.

You can combo with sub/sub, the damage is gonna be bad because you'll freeze off of the kameo or fighter, if not both.. freezing gives horrible scaling, it is ideally for anti-zoning. But yeah, the idea is you need to juggle them in the air, or if you have access to a restand, you can continue the combo.. as far as the restand, Ice slide into sektor's double rockets come to mind.

That ice ball isn’t gonna hit in neutral 99.9% of the time. I’d recommend looking up some videos on how to play neutral, how turns work, frame data etc, then you’ll be able to lab combos more efficiently

I know the ball won't work in a match so should I use cyrex or someone else?

His best kameo is Serena if you don’t have khameleon. Please go do his combo tutorials.

As others have said I think you should just learn the beginner stuff first then decide who you like to play. Once you’ve learnt the fundamentals then you’ll understand how to come up with all sorts of combos. I personally love this game for all the potential there is for creative combos

Them hitting the ground kills the combo so the FB can be blocked and punished.

Sub/Sub isn't much of a combo team but more of an anti zoning/mashing.

I remember Jason coming out on mkx and I watched my first “how to read frame data” video and it just killed me. Now I’m like gimmie gimmie gimmie every new character and don’t need it lol what a great joy it is to finally learn and understand

Sub/Sub is a good team, but you have to play patiently using it. The ice armor helps you ignore zoning, the parry can help you punish the opponent for mashing and armoring too much. The cold shoulder is a very safe move that you can do klone after to get a good distance away from the enemy. The freeze gives you decent combo damage and it can be done as an ambush after the ice armor which can give you safety and slide combos

Best training routines for Sub-Zero in Mortal Kombat 1

Key Considerations for Sub-Zero's Training Routines in Mortal Kombat 1:

  1. Basic Moves Mastery: Start by mastering Sub-Zero's basic moves, including his punches, kicks, and special moves. Focus on:

    • Ice Blast (Down, Forward, Back, High Punch): Great for zoning and punishing opponents.
    • Slide (Back, Forward, Low Kick): Useful for closing the distance and surprising opponents.
  2. Combos Practice: Work on chaining basic attacks into combos. Sub-Zero has some effective combos that can lead to significant damage:

    • Example Combo: Jump Kick > Low Kick > Ice Blast.
    • Practice timing and execution to ensure smooth transitions between moves.
  3. Defensive Techniques: Sub-Zero is effective at zoning and countering. Incorporate defensive strategies:

    • Use Ice Clone (Down, Forward, Back, Low Punch) to create a barrier and punish aggressive opponents.
    • Practice blocking and countering to improve your defensive game.
  4. Spacing and Zoning: Learn to control space using Sub-Zero's projectiles and mobility:

    • Keep your distance and use Ice Blast to zone opponents.
    • Utilize the Slide to evade attacks and close the gap when necessary.
  5. Matchup Knowledge: Understand how Sub-Zero fares against different characters. Some characters may have specific strategies that counter him, so adapt your training accordingly.

Recommendation: Set up a training routine that includes:

  • 15-20 minutes of basic move practice.
  • 20-30 minutes focusing on combos and execution.
  • 10-15 minutes of defensive drills against AI or a friend.
  • Regularly review match footage to identify areas for improvement.

By focusing on these areas, you'll enhance your skills with Sub-Zero and become a formidable opponent in Mortal Kombat 1!
