TL;DR
Immersion and Gameplay
Ultrawide monitors are praised for their immersive experience, especially in games that support the aspect ratio. The wider field of view enhances peripheral vision, making gameplay more engaging compared to standard monitors [1:1]. However, not all games support ultrawide resolutions perfectly, which can lead to issues like black bars or zoomed-in cameras
[1:2]. When games do support ultrawide displays, they provide an unmatched level of immersion, rivaling multiple monitor setups or VR
[1:7].
Top Recommendations
Several models stand out as top recommendations for ultrawide gaming monitors. The Samsung Odyssey G9 is frequently mentioned for its impressive size and performance [1:3]
[2:3]. The LG 45” OLED 5K2K is noted for its unbeatable quality for both work and gaming
[1:5]. The Alienware AW3423DW is another popular choice, praised for its OLED panel which offers superior contrast and color accuracy
[2:2]
[3:3].
Panel Types and Features
When choosing an ultrawide monitor, consider the panel type. OLED panels are favored for their excellent color reproduction and contrast, though they may have issues like burn-in over time [3:8]. IPS panels, such as those found in some LG models, offer good image quality and response times but might lack true HDR capability
[4:2]
[4:7]. Refresh rates are also crucial, with many gamers preferring monitors with at least 120Hz for smoother gameplay
[2:3].
Size and Compatibility
The size of the monitor can impact your gaming experience. While larger screens like the 49” G9 provide a more immersive experience, they may not be fully utilized by all games, leading to black bars [2:2]. A 34” ultrawide is often recommended as a balanced option for most games
[3:2]. It's important to ensure that your chosen monitor's resolution and size are compatible with the games you play, as this can affect your overall satisfaction with the purchase.
Curious if the best ultrawide gaming monitors live up to the hype for immersive games and multitasking. What are the main pros and cons compared to standard monitors? For those who use one, does it make single-player or competitive games better? Interested in hearing about panel type (IPS, VA), refresh rates, and any issues with black bars or game compatibility. Does the wider field of view really change gameplay, or is it mostly for aesthetics?
Been running a 49” G9 for about 3 years now. For gaming I think it’s the best thing ever. YMMV
Been on mine for about 6 months. It heavily depends on how much and how the games you play support it. Some games the support is so bad or non existent that i end up going to regular 1440p resolution. Others it's great until it isn't because the camera is zoomed in expecting as much height as there is width leaving little vertical room. Some let you play with the FoV while others its locked.
TL:DR super ultrawide monitors, when they work flawlessly they are untouched except by multiple monitor or vr for immersion. When they don't work you are wasting a lot of screen resolution on nothing at best, or having to find work arounds or not playing at worst.
Yes I have the Samsung 57” odyssey Neo g9 and it blows my mind now not all games support this size but a lot do and the games look amazing.
G9 57 and dont look back
You can't look back! Everywhere you look there's just more monitor!
Yes!! Pair it with a vertical 24-27" monitor and I think it's the perfect setup!!. Anything from 34-38" is fine. Those super ultrawide I find super annoying to use.
>Those super ultrawide I find super annoying to use.
When they get support and work, only multiple monitor surround/vr comes close. When they don't work it is annoying to use.
Yes. Get the LG 45” OLED 5K2K
Unbeatable for work and gaming.
5120x2160 resolution
LG 5K2K is the real deal now days
It is actually worth it for work and play.
Work - you can view more data on the same display. Even though viewing data on 2 monitors is not much different but… no bezel viewing of data on an ultrawide is going to be a big change for anyone moving to ultrawide from a dual display user.
Play - this depends…as long as the game supports it, you are going to have a much better view. You may look at the middle of the screen but you have peripheral vision which matters. The problem with standard monitors … you have tunnel vision which requires you to constantly spin the view to see if you missed something or an enemy. The peripheral vision allows you to play the game more naturally. Also, the view of world does look much much better.
Many games support ultrawide now except for competitive games …. That’s really the only con.
Sizes:
Types of ultrawides:
There are 1080p ultrawide but .. it’s pointless. Too low resolution to be good but… this is the only low cost option now.
3440x1440 - this is the standard ultrawide at 34” main or 39”/40”. Just go 34” and you won’t really have an issue. The ppi of the others are just not good and you really don’t get a price benefit.
5120x1440 - the super ultrawide, this is not as supported like the above and this can be a bit of a handful. You will like it or not. This is not for everyone and you will need a better gpu to play reasonably well.
5k2k - the new best option. You have 45” oled for gaming and 40” ips which is mainly for work. You really need a great gpu that supports dp 2.1 to get the best out of this monitor. You may or may not like this one due to the heavy curve of the lg 45”. Personally, I’m waiting for a 40” 5k2k oled.
57” Samsung miniled Va monitor - this is the only 7680x2160. You need a monster of a gpu to game on this and similar to the 5120x1440… it may or may not work for you.
Panel types:
IPs - these are going eol and being replaced by oled. The best low cost option - m34wq is no longer available. The next best is the mag401qr which is becoming harder to find, it seems to be eol as well or almost. Companies need to continue to make these….
Va - many cheap options available but…. I would not go this route. Ghosting is an issue with Va and it can be bad.
Oled - this is what everyone is making. They are great gaming monitors so many companies are making them.
Refresh:
They can be from 60hz up to 240hz. Oled monitors are 165/175 and 240 depending on the model. Choose depending on how much you want to spend and can your computer handle the higher refresh.
This is the best answer btw OP. I've been using an X34 since release, so almost 10 years now.
I’m in the market for a new ultrawide monitor primarily for gaming and wanted to get some recommendations from you all. I’ve done a bit of research online, and a few monitors that consistently come up as top options are:
While these seem like solid choices, I know nothing beats firsthand experience. If you’ve used any of these or have other recommendations, I’d love to hear your thoughts!
I play a mix of competitive games like Valorant and more immersive titles like Cyberpunk 2077, so performance, color accuracy, and minimal ghosting are important to me. Let me know what you think!
Thanks in advance!
The Philips Evnia 34 OLED widescreen is great that's what I'm using. My hubs had a 49". We both agree 34" is the perfect size because most games don't utilize the entire screen after that and you'll have annoying black bars on the side.
I been using U4025QW for awhile now. It's a pretty solid Ultrawide with 120hz and decent PPI. The only one with decent PPI in your list is G9, but it does have quite a bit of defect problem that you gonna be gambling on.
Buy one of the new 45" 5K/2K Oled Ultrawides coming this year. I'm gonna swap my oled G9 to one as i personally think they are the end game
please dont get the LG, I had that one and their quality control and customer support is absolute garbage.
Not the alienwares, reviewers apease audiences by failing to mention that all the presets including sRGB use the old sRGB gamma curve instead of gamma 2.2 of over the past decade. Blacks are elevated and everything is generally more washed out lacking contrast, especially on the 32".
The MSI 240hz Ultrawide is the absolute best. With unique hdmi 2.1 with no dsc at 240hz, while the gigabyte competitor has tons of issues and I won't even mention samsung.
The best 34 inch i’ve seen is the (ASUS TUF 34 Inch Curved Gaming Monitor VG34VQL1B). In other 34 inch ultrawide, all i see is bad reviews and costly.
Any of the OLED models (AW3423DWF, etc). OLED does everything for gaming better than any IPS does.
Your question is "the best 34 inch gaming ultrawide curved monitor", it's going to be costly.
I heard something about burn in and faster deterioration over time for oled’s, is that accurate?
Samsung g8 odssey and alienware aw3423dwf are the best options ı would say
I second the Alienware aw3423dwf. Absolutely amazing monitor all around. Been using it for a few months now.
It flickers. My eyes are burning.
isnt that an overpriced piece tho?
just got one Saturday and I'm in heaven :D
g8 has a loud coil whine according to some reviewers. not sure I wanna go back to the old CRT age
It depends on your budget, sub 500€ the Asus is the best you can find. But going past that, the AW3423DWF is probably the best one out there.
The Alienware 34DWF
Picking a 34-inch curved ultrawide for gaming gets tricky with all the refresh rate and resolution trade-offs, so you might want to check out the discussion here for more on nailing the right setup.
I currently have a Samsung G27 27" (VA, 240hz, 1440p). It's been really nice spec-wise and I did not have technical issues at first. A week or so ago I noticed a "line" of light was filtering through the top and the front panel is actually peeling off! It's getting larger.
It's still warranty but it made me very wary of Samsung and I intend to sell it once I RMA it to buy an ultrawide monitor from another brand. Would you have recommendations?
EDIT: if possible at max 700-800 price point and not OLED since I'd like to work on it.
LG has some solid IPS gaming ultrawide monitors although none of them have real HDR capability...
If you’re looking for a 34” I’d say alienware dw/dwf
Those are OLED aren't they though? I edited my post because I need to work on it (coding, writing) and that's actually why I want an ultrawide.
Ah in that case, you might want to check out LG Ultragear 34” nanoIPS monitor, from what I’ve seen it is the best non oled of its size on the market.
I'm looking at the DWF oled and the LG 34gn850-b IPS panel as my next purchase.
I've have the LG 34GN850B for 3 years and it's still running perfectly. Use it mainly for gaming and love it.
Just got the LG one a few days ago, I absolutely love it! Was afraid of the contrast after coming from VA, but it’s not that bad once you have it imo. I set the brightness to 35 and I’m not bothered at all.
I'm not 100% on an oled screen, and someone suggested that LG and the reviews look good. HDR is probably going to be pants, but image quality and colours are good, as are response times, so it's top of the list right now.
LG 34gp950 something...
The most popular panels are produced by Samsung :). I think, at least
Looks very good. I'm a bit wary of the IPS though because I often play in low light settings...
Second this. This size and resolution is just about perfect. Can’t go back to 34” and 1440p after getting used to my LG38. Tried using a 27” OLED 1440p display and missed ultrawide.
Waiting on an OLED in this format or at least 42” 4K ultrawide but doesn’t seem likely to be produced at this point.
Choosing the best monitor for gaming depends on a few key factors, including your budget, the type of games you play, and the performance of your gaming setup. That said, several models consistently stand out for their overall performance, features, and value, making them excellent options for most gamers.
One of the top choices currently is the LG UltraGear OLED 27GR95QE-B. This 27-inch OLED monitor offers a 1440p resolution and a 240Hz refresh rate, which hits a sweet spot for competitive and immersive gaming. OLED panels are known for their perfect blacks, incredible contrast, and near-instantaneous response times. This makes the LG UltraGear excellent for fast-paced games like first-person shooters or action titles, where motion clarity and low input lag are crucial. The colors are vibrant and viewing angles are wide, though OLED monitors are more expensive and may require care to avoid image retention or burn-in with static UI elements.
If you prefer a larger display, the Samsung Odyssey Neo G8 is another standout. It’s a 32-inch 4K monitor with a 240Hz refresh rate and mini-LED backlighting. This means it offers both ultra-high resolution and great HDR performance thanks to its high peak brightness and excellent local dimming. It's ideal for gamers who want both stunning visuals and competitive performance, especially those with high-end PCs capable of pushing high frame rates at 4K resolution.
For gamers on a tighter budget, the Gigabyte M27Q is a strong 1440p monitor with a 170Hz refresh rate and an IPS panel. It provides great value by delivering solid color accuracy, a fast response time, and smooth performance in most games. While it doesn’t have the contrast of an OLED or the HDR capabilities of more expensive models, it’s an excellent all-rounder for under half the price of premium displays.
Console gamers should consider the LG C2 OLED TV, particularly the 42-inch model. While it's technically a TV, it supports HDMI 2.1, 4K at 120Hz, VRR, and ALLM, making it fully compatible with next-gen consoles like the PS5 and Xbox Series X. Its OLED screen provides an incredible cinematic experience while still offering low input lag and fast response times, making it a great hybrid for both gaming and media consumption.
Ultimately, the best monitor for gaming is the one that balances performance, features, and price according to your needs. Competitive players may prioritize refresh rate and response time, making high-refresh 1080p or 1440p monitors more appealing. On the other hand, gamers who enjoy visually rich single-player experiences might lean toward OLED or 4K displays with strong HDR capabilities. Make sure to match the monitor’s specs to your graphics card’s capabilities to avoid bottlenecks and get the best experience possible.
The LG UltraGear OLED 27GR95QE-B is the best all-around gaming monitor with a 240Hz refresh rate, 1440p resolution, and stunning OLED visuals. For budget-conscious gamers, the Gigabyte M27Q offers great 1440p performance at a lower price.
Looking for the absolute best ultrawide monitor for the use stated above. I'm working home part time and I also like gaming (just Action/RPG/strategy games). Unlimited budget and no space limitations whatsoever.
57" g9
The extra vertical space is great for productivity, and it still makes a good monitor for basically any aspect ratio 16:9, 21:9, 32:9 depending on what's best for the game and your hardware can support.
The HDR brightness is also incredible
I have a G9 57” and a 49”, agree the extra vertical is important at work. I do not play games much but the 49” is on my photo editing machine (OLED Version) and it is amazing, but short.
This! Software engineer here, I spend 10+ hours a day in front of a monitor and G9 57 was the best purchase in last 10 years, easily! Btw, I tried and returned Dell 4025qw, HDR is really bad and slow response time kills any fast paced games
49” OLED G9. I use my MacBook by day, and PC at night for gaming. No text issues, amazing performance and Colors. Highly recommend
Budget open? Dell U4025QW. An amazing home office monitor with good gaming capabilities (to be honest haven’t had any issues with gaming). I love mine.
I totally agree! The text and colours are amazing sharp and I love to work on it. The only problem is the refresh rate and gamer display features are limited but the 120 hertz refresh rate is still good enough for me.
My problem is that I came from 144hertz and nvidia g-sync to this and it clearly has some limitations and tearing but not enough to make it a problem.
The kvm switch and quality of the colour l and text and the high pixel density is amazing. I’m using it both on Mac and windows and the old LG 3840x1600 is not even coming close to its quality and clarity. I’m thinking of buying one more for the office
5Kx2K… that’s sick. Definitely interested in seeing more in this form factor. We’re so ready to move on from 3440x1440.
Where is the love for Alienware 38? I find it to be the best sweet spot above a 34 and smaller than a 40 but checking all the boxes for this exact setup work/play
LG 38GN950-B
38 inches with 1600 vertical pixels instead of 1440 is the perfect balance. Don't go OLED since you will burn-in. Yes, some manufacturers have warranties but every company makes that a complete pain in the ass to deal with.
This monitor is incredible truly. Perfect size and no risk of burn in.
I have this too but the text clarity is not good especially if you run Mac U4025QW is so much better than this but not for gaming then the LG is better
Agreed but 57” would need a 4090 at least and even that gaming might be choppy….
It is Samsung Odyssey 49" 240hz?
What's the deal. If I really want to make my 3070 Ti suffer, cry, and die a slowly hot death, what exactly do I buy?
Good news is I plan to upgrade to GPU to a 3090 Ti or better soon, so go wild.
G9 is a super ultra wide. I use mine with a 3070ti and it’s held up well even in Star Citizen, Squad, The Finals, Jedi games, etc. There are also ultra wide monitors so decide which you really want and what kind of games and things you do on your PC and you’ll get better guidance. I think many are waiting on the 57” Samsung though which was announced at CES iirc
Current using two 34" LG 1440p at 165hz to game and work.
I hate splitting them unevenly to game though so come bonus and tax time they're gone.
Super ultra wide is what I'm thinking.
I'm very interested to hear that you also have a 3070 Ti though.
And you managed reasonable frame rates?
The original G9 is on special here for $1499 AUD which is crazy low. I'm very, very tempted.
Mine has been great. Honestly never even updated the firmware, lol.
Yeah, some of the games I play aren’t optimized well and I’ve still gotten good frames even at full resolution.
If you look at my profile you can see some posts of gaming clips I’ve done over the past couple years to get a sense.
A big upgrade for me was paring it with a 5800X3D also.
depends on what you want it for, you are right though that most people think the samsung oddysey is the best, especially for work, but also for gaming. I would check out this https://wfhgearguide.com/the-monitor-that-helped-smblawgroup-close-832m-in-transactions/
Dell Alienware AW3423DWF
Why this monitor over the Samsung OLED G8?
Better software and overall hardware. It has active cooling, Samsung G8 has only passive cooling so it automatically dims when it Displays lots of white
Strongly recommend this as well, I feel this is the best 34” UW on the market right now. I’ve been using it every day for over a year for both productivity and gaming and have had no issues whatsoever. The only time I’ll upgrade is when they release a 38”.
You must mean the dw.
The dwf hasn’t been out for a year
Philips 34M2C8600
I would buy the Philips qd Oled. Has a glossy finish everything else is like the dwf
Title above, I'll be using a ryzen 9 and a 2080ti. Upgrading to the newer generations upon release.
I play all types of games, AAA story games and FPS as well.
It’s going to come down to some personal preferences, in particular what size are you looking for?
I have an Acer X35 which is pretty damn spectacular. If you are content with a 35”, the picture quality and HDR on this monitor is absolutely stunning....
Good even with a VA panel? I only have experience with IPS so far.
This is my 2nd VA panel. Everything else has been IPS. Returned the first (Viewsonic) VA as it was unusable.
I wouldn’t say the x35 monitor is perfect (don’t think any are)... but the HDR and brightness are truly amazing. I absolutely love it....
VA has great picture quality but has issues with motion
What compromises are you willing to accept?
LG CX 48" OLED - TV's dont run 21:9, correct?
They do with custom resolutions set via Custom Resolution Utility or Nvidia Control Panel.
But without a HDMI 2.1 GPU you are limited to 60 Hz.
I own a 65" LG C9 that does this just fine and have a CX 48" coming hopefully next week.
You can technically do 4k 120hz with hdmi 2.0 on the cx, but you need to use 4:2:0 subsampling, so NOT GOOD AT ALL for desktop use, but absolutley game changing when enabled before launching games that can run at >60fps.
cant wait to upgrade my 1080ti in the future for dat 4k 120 4:4:4 though
But you can't do custom ultrawide resolutions like that afaik, they don't seem to work at anything above 60 Hz probably because you need GPU scaling to do that.
Response times should also be even better for the G9 than the LG's. We just don't know yet. But preliminary sites are reporting very low G2G response times close to 1 MS even if it sounds too good to be true.
By the way how do you like the a d processors... I've been Intel forever but may switch soon
I was looking at different ultrawide monitors and made this list based on what seems like to be the best. From my research, it's generally recommend OLED if you are focused on gaming and entertainment. If you are also going to have a good amount of productivity and work, then IPS is usually the way to go. 34" is the most common ultrawide size, but seems like they are getting bigger and bigger.
Gaming
» ASUS ROG Strix XG349C - 34", IPS, 180 Hz. G-SYNC compatible. UWQHD display with 1ms response time, ELMB Sync for blur reduction. DisplayHDR 400, USB-C, and DisplayPort for versatile connectivity. High refresh rate for competitive gaming.

I am looking for a 34 inch ultrawide monitor to replace my dual monitor setup. I work from home 2-3 days a week, so would need something that is decent for office use (I'm a software engineer and use VS code as well as documentation tools).
IPS ultrawides are pretty much extinct, unless I spend $900 on a Dell ultrasharp, which feels like overkill for an IPS monitor. I'm open to looking at the secondhand market for an IPS though.
For those of you who have an ultrawide (either VA or OLED) and use it for both work and gaming, how is it? I know OLED has some text fringing issues so I'm curious if either panel is still okay for some office use. It seems like everyone swears by the OLED alienware ultrawides, but I'm concerned about their performance for office related tasks. Let me know your thoughts!
57 inch neo 8k x 2k. You need a 5090 to really drive it but gaming is amazing on it and resolution is amazing for work.
Agreed. Incredible for productivity and any kind of work. 45" isn't wife enough and 49" doesn't give enough vertical space.
I have the Alienware aw3418dw ips ultrawide. I bought it for $150 on FB marketplace. I also recently bought the Alienware AW3425DWM Va Panel ultrawide for $350 with tax on Amazon.
For work and general daytime browsing, the ips is better. For videos and gaming, the VA wins.
The VA panel can be a little distracting for work since it's got the typical gamma shift and black level raise issues. However there is absolutely zero black smearing on my panel so text scrolling is smooth.
I also briefly owned the AOC CU34G2XP VA monitor and that panel was atrocious.
How is the VA alienware for office use? Is it unusable or just not as good the IPS? I’m not super concerned about smearing since a lot of modern VAs have gotten better and I’m not really sensitive to it
For office use:
Plusses: I actually like the 1500r curve better than the 1900r of the IPS.
Minuses: The part I dislike is on any dark screen, like I use reddit in dark mode, chat gpt in dark mode, microsoft outlook in dark mode, and my work software in dark mode, the VA panel has gamma and black level raise issues. If you are looking dead center on the screen, both the top and bottom 4" of the screen will look slightly washed out. Funny that its wash out is probably not even as bad as the base contrast on an IPS, it's just that the difference in seeing it on one screen is a bit annoying. No motion smearing whatsoever. And on light backgrounds or dark backgrounds where there's a lot of content, I don't notice the gamma shift. It's mainly just dark black/grey backgrounds with white text.
I've had three OLED ultrawide monitors, granted, they've all been 45" or larger. The Samsung G9 49" OLED is beautiful for gaming, but boo boo for productivity given the fringing. It also broke within two years, glad I had the Best Buy protection plan. Then, I figured I'd give the LG 45" 1440p OLED a shot and it had worse text fringing than the Samsung. Returned that one and ended up getting what had been out of stock for too long, the LG 45" 5K2K OLED. That one uses a new subpixel layout for better text clarity, but the resolution obviously helps as well. It's everything I could've asked for and fits all my needs for gaming and productivity. I recognize it's much larger than you're looking for, but probably some helpful data points.
That’s your answer, OP. I also got the 5K2K LG monitor and I code fully remote on it 5 days a week.
People are a bit worried for OLED burn in, but there’s no sign of it on mine. it always has my IDE sitting mostly in the same position for most of my shift. Let it do its cleaning cycles on your lunch break and enjoy the experience. It’s the end game for my needs tbh, and gaming on that thing is phenomenal. Since you’re actually using this to make money I wouldn’t bat an eye and splurge in.
U4025QW would be your best bet. If you want clarity for work and 120Hz for gaming, this is the only monitor in the market for this. I been looking all around and couldn't find any other monitor with decent PPI and high refresh rate.
This is what I have for these reasons. It’s an amazing monitor.
Does it have 2 inputs and behave like 2 monitors or just one? Thanks
LG 38” that is IPS and 1600p. I absolutely love it. Slightly more vertical real estate than 34”, great for daily office use and solid for gaming as well with the 144Hz. I of course wish I could turn it into an OLED on command but I didn’t want to deal with poor text clarity and burn in concerns.
It's all subjective. Is is the best monitor for just productivity? Absolutely not. OP is looking for a monitor for both productivity and gaming, and you're not going to find another ultrawide like this one.
Best ultrawide monitor for gaming
Key Considerations for Choosing the Best Ultrawide Monitor for Gaming:
Resolution: Look for a monitor with at least 2560x1080 (UltraWide Full HD) or 3440x1440 (UltraWide QHD) for sharper images and better detail.
Refresh Rate: A higher refresh rate (144Hz or more) provides smoother gameplay. This is especially important for fast-paced games.
Response Time: Aim for a low response time (5ms or lower) to reduce motion blur and ghosting during gaming.
Panel Type:
Adaptive Sync Technology: Look for monitors that support G-Sync (NVIDIA) or FreeSync (AMD) to reduce screen tearing and provide a smoother gaming experience.
Size and Curvature: A 34-inch monitor with a slight curve (1800R or 1500R) can enhance immersion and provide a more comfortable viewing experience.
