IKEA Kallax Series
The IKEA Kallax series is a popular choice among vinyl collectors for its affordability, versatility, and perfect fit for records. Many users recommend the Kallax shelves, with options ranging from 2x2 to larger configurations like 4x4 or even 5x5, depending on your collection size [4:1]
[5:1]. Each cube can hold approximately 50 records, making it easy to calculate how many cubes you need based on your collection
[4:1]. The Kallax units are also available in various colors and can be found both new and used
[5:4].
Alternative Modular Options
For those looking for more modular solutions, the Simple Wood Goods cubes offer flexibility as they can be stacked and expanded as your collection grows. They also come with optional doors to protect records from dust and pets [2:3]. Another modular option is the IKEA Eket line, which provides a higher quality finish and can be customized with wooden or metal feet
[2:1]
[2:2].
Unique and Stylish Storage
For a more unique and stylish approach, some users have recommended mid-century modern options like the Mid Century Walnut Record Cubes [1:1]. Additionally, front-facing storage solutions such as those offered by LPBin provide an attractive way to display your collection while keeping it easily accessible
[2:6].
Budget-Friendly Alternatives
If you're on a budget, Walmart offers a similar product to the IKEA Kallax under the Better Homes and Gardens brand. These cube organizers come in multiple sizes and finishes, providing a cost-effective alternative for vinyl storage [5:2]. Another affordable solution mentioned is using egg crates, although this is less ideal for long-term storage due to lack of protection and organization
[4:1].
In summary, the IKEA Kallax series remains the most popular and versatile choice for vinyl storage, offering a range of sizes and configurations to suit any collection. For those seeking something more unique or modular, options like Simple Wood Goods and LPBin provide stylish alternatives. Budget-conscious collectors can also find suitable solutions at retailers like Walmart.
I'm decorating a new apartment right now and am looking to upgrade from the small IKEA cube that's currently holding my records. If you have a personal favorite way to store and display your collection, comment with a link or picture!
As an example, I recently visited someone's home that had this cool offset cube storage thing:
I'm interested in more unique options like that but also in TV stands or bookshelves that work particularly well.
I just keep my vinyls in a black plastic garbage bag in the corner. Cheap, lightweight, keeps the Coronavirus off your babies...
Lmao
Having a small-ish studio apartment, I needed to make the most of space and thus went with the Lappland TV storage unit. It combines the utility of the cube shelves with a nice spot for the flat screen.

And then next to that, have the Novogratz turntable stand from Amazon/Wal-Mart. Pretty cheap little unit, but with some wood glue and drilling a port in back for cables really took it a step ahead.

This looks similar to the one in the picture - Mid Century Walnut Record Cubes
Some options for just records:

Wooden Record Multimedia Shelf
Options for TV stand combinations:
Open Shelf Asymmetrical Darren Media Stand
Carson Carrington Shorewood Mid Century Modern Wood Entertainment Cabinet with Doors

hey everyone! as the title says, i'm currently in the market for vinyl storage. i currently have a four cube organizer, but have ran out of space and am looking for something that is durable and holds more records
thank you in advance!
The new(ish) IKEA Eket line is fantastic.
I bought two 2×2 for all mine.
It's a huge step up in quality compared to older Ikea designs that were used to store vinyl. Plus, you can get wooden feet to add to these ones to give it a little bit more of a polished look for a room.
I always recommend the Eket. It’s well built, the albums fit well within the cubes. I don’t suggest getting the solo cubes though, as they are designed to all be the same height if you stack them, so the single cubes are too short for some double LPs that are taller.
I find mine worn great, and I have them on the metal feet, from IKEA also, to get them up off the floor a touch.
yeah I got two of the cubes and stacked them, they are a tight fit. I am about to get a 4x4 one as well soon (though my collection isn't that big yet). I am planning on putting my record player on top of it. Any thoughts on how rigid they are? What I like about the single box/stacking is they seem very rigid, I am a bit worried the large version may be a bit wobbly and could pick up vibrations from me walking to close to my player.
ninja edit: I do love how modular the system is though, and how easy it is to grow it with your collection.
I have bought these: https://simplewoodgoods.com/
They are cubes, but they stack and you can add as many as you want. they also have doors to keep out dust and cat claws. I looked pretty hard a few years ago and this what I settled on. I'm up to 8 of the cubes. The owners are super nice too.
Damn its a damn good option! Do you know if larger sleeve or boxset still fits in?!
Edit : damn they quite expensive tho ahah. I would AT LEAST need 12 of them so I'm out .
Yea, most of my box sets will fit. This is one of the "cheaper" solutions if you need the records closed in. I looked a few other options that were basically giant filing cabinets that closed. If you don't need the doors, there are cheaper options.
You need a little bit of space but there's nothing better than having front facing storage. Assembly was easy and it's super sturdy
Front facing all day
I know it’s fuck walmart, but i’ve had these for years.

also Ikea sells Kallax’s, that’s a very popular one for collectors.
I just have them lined up on my shelf, I want something more substantial
What I do is I get a shelf and I line them up on there.
My shelf is enclosed by a door. I believe the kids are calling it a cabinet these days.
Genius! Not enough up votes for this answer!
The way, this is
What other sort of storage are you imagining? There's not much else you can with them.
Lined up on my shelf.
Lined up at various depths, on my shelf.
On the ground, outside. Preferrably in the dirt and rocks of my driveway, but only in the sunny parts. None of that awful shade for my babies.
I got me a shelf and line them up there. It is both my favorite and least favorite way to store vinyl.
My dad unfortunately passed away on Christmas Eve but he left all of his records to me since we shared a passion for music and I had started my own collection. I inherited close to 500 records not including 45’s. They are just sitting upright in egg crates at the moment but I live in a quite small apartment and can’t stand the thought of them just being cramped on each other. It makes it difficult to find what I want to listen to as well. What can I use which would free up more room but hold a good amount of the vinyl without me having to spend out a huge chunk of money?
500 records will fit in am 8 cube record kallax.
Ikea kallax
Just bought this and am so content with the purchase and application
My condolences. I've been looking into storage options as well and it looks like the Ikea Kallax is the best option at a low price. I'm looking at a 2x4 so I can place my amp and turntable on top of it, but there are also larger options like 3x4, 4x4, 5x5. I estimate one cube has space for around 50 records so you would need at least a 3x4 which go for around 90 euros new, but you can also find them on the used market very easily.
Thank you so much for this! I really needed that ratio! I will be looking into them and ordering one as soon as possible!
Hi Groningen! I miss the NL. It has been over a decade now . Seeing your username made me smile :)
Did you know, the widely accepted plural of vinyl is vinyl (or just "records")? Many incorrectly use the term vinyls, due to its widespread misuse - but now you're in the know! It's silly, but conventional. Anyway, here are some cats.

thank you bot.
good bot
What is the go to for cheap record storage? I'm looking for room for 100+ records as I expand my music collection.
Another vote for the Kallax shelves. If there isn't an IKEA near you, Wal-Mart has their version of it in different sizes and colors:
Another vote for Ikea Kallax, 2x2 or 1x4 would fit your needs, they ship them for $9.
I found a Kallax 2x2 used online and love it
Ikia KALLAX
All the cool kids get IKEA’s Kallax shelving. It’s cheap, looks nice and is a perfect fit for records. I have a 2x4 unit in my living room.
Hmm, my repurposed cardboard shipping box doesn't seem to be an option...
I prefer to use the over door vinyl roll holder,it is space-saving and keep a good amount of vinyl rolls .
Neither. I keep mine in a drawer.
Don't you think it's hard to see what you have when you need them ,because all the vinyl rolls are piled up ?
I don't actually have enough that it's a problem.
I have one of those shelves with the cube baskets and keep them in there.
It is easy for you to get your preferred vinyl rolls when you need them ?
I have a bookshelf 😅 I also have an insane amount of vinyl
Bookshelf is also a good option, but I think the over door hanging vinyl roll holder is even better ,because you can see what you have at a glance and maximize your space .
I keep mine in 12x12 scrapbook boxes
I think boxes are second best ,they are all stacking up on top of each other in the box ,so you have to spend some time to search for the one you need.
Mine are actually still rolled! I have them rolled tight enough to fit in the box and I can fit 6-7 rolls in each. Only one box has the flat pieces because that's what my parents bought lol
Not sure what your budget is, but if you can swing to pay a little more than ikea, I can 100% recommend this company.
Built like a fucking tank
369 bucks ?! America you crazy
For real! For $400 you can build a whole ass cabinet to place the turntable and speakers on with much more storage.
By the way, I ordered my lpbin. I’m expecting tomorrow. I appreciate yours and everyone else’s input. Thanks again, man.
Awesome man! You will not be disappointed. It’s as easy to assemble as an ikea item but built like a freight train. Make sure to post a pic once you’ve set it up. Enjoy!
I second this!
For about $50 of lumber and screws my wife built me the second one from the top on that site. Holds about 200-250 depending how tight you pack em. There are plans on how to build somewhere here on Reddit
I’ve made two of these with those same designs. Wasn’t that difficult if you have the tools and space it’s a good weekend project. I gotta make a third but lumber prices have gotten wild.
Dude love that Econochrist record
Love that Econochrist album.

There’s a Deadguy documentary a bandmate helped work on. It’s petty good!
It’s an awesome doc. A couple of friends of mine were interviewed in it.
I'm an old guy , I'll be 65 next month . When I was 14 in '72 I convinced my parents to help me set up my own stereo system. One of the first records I bought was Bolan's Electric Warrior along with the discwasher brush. I made it a habit to never play a record without first using the discwasher brush. Fast forward to 1990 and I had to relocate and I was unable to set up my turntable. Because of cassettes and CDs I ended up with a collection of about 200 + LPs. I kept these records in a mellon crate that was stored in the back of a closet. For the next 33 years I moved these records from place to place storing them in closets and only playing my CD's . I bought a new turntable and speakers late last year . When I dropped the needle on Electric Warrior after 33 years in storage it was whisper quiet and I was amazed at the sound . I have an ML shaped stylus that gets deep in the groove and almost all my old records sound awesome because I kept 'em clean. Heed this old man's advice and keep your records clean , only handle them by the edges, and when done playing, lock them in their jackets and store upright.Discwasher is no longer available but there are similar systems out there.
Love this! My dad is a bit older than you, but I recently convinced him to let me have and enjoy all of his old records as he hasn’t had a player in years. He was thrilled I wanted them and we built a nice stand for all of the records and my player. One of the things he gave me was this discwasher, box and all. I will absolutely treasure this collection for many many years.
Good news! Groovewasher is based on the old Discwasher formula https://www.groovewasher.com/pages/story
This is what I use to keep my records clean now . They make good products.
How does this compare to the Spin Clean record washer?
That’s the same record brush I have. I’ve had it for many years.
Discwasher is absolutely still available! They even started making D4 again.
Discwasher was popular in the 70's , I still use mine dry for a first sweep of a dirty record before 'wet' cleaning.
Maybe I should make a public service announcement to those considering getting a brush like this , especially for those that partake of botanicals. Brushes like this have a big chunk of wood attached to them and to use one properly you have to use a rolling motion . There is going to come a time when that brush rolls out of your hand and onto the record and you will immediately shit your pants. Like all hard lessons in life , you just won't ever do that again .I promise you that you will develop a monkey grip every time you use the brush from then on.
LOL , this sounds worse than it actually is . It has happened to me maybe twice and no damage was done to the record , but the part about shitting your pants is true because it scares the shit out of you when it happens.
What I wish I could share with this community is what it was like to play the first record I ever bought when I was 14 and what it felt like to listen to it again at 65 after being in storage for 33 years. Overwhelming is the first word that comes to mind !
My mom has the same one. I was taught early on to always wipe down before dropping the needle.
I’ve been debating whether to buy these or not as I’ve been looking for crystal clear outer sleeves that are durable and protective, I also really like the concept of the dual pocket design, they’re quite expensive to just try out though. Does anyone have experience with these sleeves? Do you recommend the resealable one or the one with flaps? I’m leaning towards the flap but I also like the idea of making a gatefold sleeve with two resealable sleeves, I know they make gatefold sleeves but they’re only single pocket iirc. And can 2lps fit in the pocket with a closed gatefold if I want to just use a regular dual pocket sleeve? Thanks!
I buy all of my sleeves from Vinyl Storage Solutions, primarily single pocket outers and 2 mil inners. I can’t speak for the dual pocket products but I am very happy with all products I’ve purchased from VSS.
I just got my first batch of these last week and already have another batch on order while they’re in stock.
I got the resealable ones, but I’m going to give the tuck ones a go next and decide from there. The dual pocket design is really good, and having such easy access to your record is fantastic. The rice inner sleeves are brilliant as well, I’ve also ordered some more of those.
Until Vinyl Storage Solutions give me a reason NOT to trust them, then I’ll continue using them. Too many of the big YouTube guys who are obviously really clued up on preservation and vinyl care recommend them, and there doesn’t seem to be many (if any) negative comments in topics like this.
Yeah they seem to be great! Do you keep printed inner sleeves and other extras inside the sealable pocket or the outer pocket? Also does the pocket fit two LPs?
It honestly depends on the record. A good portion of my record collection didn’t come with printed inner sleeves, or did but not interesting enough to ever want to look at again. Those go inside the main record sleeve to effectively be sealed away. For interesting inner sleeves, I keep these in the outer pocket for easy access along with the record itself. Can confirm the outer pocket does hold 2x LP’s.
I'm not sure if this is the recommended way, but I put printed inners and extras inside the record sleeve. Then I put the record sleeve inside the outer sleeve. Vinyl in inner sleeves and in the pocket. I figure, odds are, I'm never going to look at the printed inners again, so better to just store them inside the record sleeve.
These have been a game changer for me and I’ve been slowly upgrading my entire collection with them. Resealable flaps all the way, and only a few more to go! I’m in California and they usually arrive within 5-6 days.
Any reason why you prefer the resealable ones? Also do you keep printed inner sleeves and other extras in the sealed pocket?
I think resealable is tidier, plus I rarely if ever open a gatefold and do indeed use the rear pocket for the vinyl, which I also keep in MoFi sleeves. I use both the standard size, as well as the larger version, which pretty much covers all variety of album sizes.
The clarity is great. The cover art really pops in these sleeves. I’ve been buying them for a year so I can’t speak too definitively to durability but I have no issues so far.
VSS is an awesome company. Buy with confidence!
I was wanting to invest in building my own front facing record storage, and found a schematic on Etsy that is pretty much the style I had been wanting, it says I will need 8 sheets of 3/4" plywood
My question being, what would be the best plywood for a shelf that is designed to hold 80-100 records(50-90lbs)?
I added images of what the schematic says and what it will look like when finished
Any help would be greatly appreciated
Baltic birch is the way.
Go with undermount slides, more expensive for sure but you won't regret it weight wise. Also these are hidden and won't show on drawer sides
if you can find something with 13 or more plies , that would be ideal ( like baltic birch ) and box joints for the joinery . Pocket holes are great and fast but since you are looking for strength , this can be a great option not just for strength , but this would also flat pack if you needed to break it down to move .
You can go with cabinet grade plywood, but you can still have voids in this grade unless you're very specific about what you buy. If you spec out plywood with no voids, the cost will go up. Find an actual lumberyard and talk to the them about what they may be able to order for you. Not only can you specify the quality of the plies in the core, you can select different types of veneers - rotary cut, flat cut, etc. Even though they may be special order, they might not be that much more expensive than the material they have in stock.
Most baltic birch will have zero or minimal voids, so that's a good choice, but keep in mind - Baltic Birch is usually sold in 5'x5' sheets. You can get it in 4x8, but it's not as common.
It actually says 4 sheets needed. You can use any plywood finish you like, but I’d buy from a lumber yard, not Lowe’s or Home Depot. At a good lumber yard you can find various hardwood plywoods, like walnut, oak and Baltic birch. All depends on what you like. What holds the records upright in those drawers?

Key Considerations for Vinyl Record Storage Solutions
Material Quality: Look for storage solutions made from durable materials like wood or high-quality plastic to protect your records from damage.
Capacity: Consider how many records you own and choose a storage solution that can accommodate your current collection and future additions.
Design: Opt for a design that allows for easy access to your records. Open shelving or crates can be practical, while cabinets can provide a more aesthetic appeal.
Protection from Dust and Light: Ensure that the storage solution protects your records from dust and direct sunlight, which can degrade the vinyl over time.
Stability: Choose a storage option that keeps records upright to prevent warping. Avoid stacking records horizontally.
Recommendations:
IKEA Kallax Shelf Unit: This is a popular choice among vinyl enthusiasts. It has cubed sections that fit standard record sizes perfectly, is sturdy, and can be customized with doors or baskets.
Vinyl Record Crates: Wooden or sturdy plastic crates are great for portability and can be stacked. Look for ones specifically designed for vinyl to ensure they hold the weight properly.
Record Storage Boxes: These boxes are ideal for protecting records from dust and light. Look for acid-free materials to prevent damage over time.
Custom Built Shelving: If you have the space and budget, consider custom shelving that fits your aesthetic and storage needs perfectly.
