TL;DR
Speed Queen
Speed Queen is frequently mentioned as a top choice for washers due to its durability and repairability [2:2],
[3:5]. Users appreciate its simplicity and robustness, making it a popular choice for those who prioritize functionality over features
[4:1],
[5:3]. However, there are mixed opinions about their dryers, with some users finding them less effective compared to other brands
[5:4].
Miele
Miele appliances are renowned for their build quality and longevity. They are described as "solid as German tanks," with some users reporting decades of trouble-free operation [5:1],
[5:2]. While they come with a higher price tag, many users believe they offer excellent value over the long term due to their reliability and performance.
LG
LG washers and dryers receive mixed reviews. Some users and sources like Wirecutter recommend LG for their water efficiency and advanced features [3:1]. However, others criticize LG for potential reliability issues, particularly after the warranty period expires
[3:4],
[3:6]. It's important to consider these factors when evaluating LG as an option.
Samsung
There is a strong consensus against Samsung appliances, with numerous users reporting frequent breakdowns and poor customer service [2:9],
[3:7]. Many users advise avoiding Samsung altogether, citing personal experiences with various appliance failures.
Other Considerations
When choosing between front-loading and top-loading machines, consider your space and water efficiency needs. Front-loaders are generally more water-efficient and can be stacked to save space [2:5]. Additionally, consider the availability of parts and ease of repair, which are often highlighted as advantages for Speed Queen and Miele models.
Hi! I just moved to a quite small apartment (Belgium), which doesn’t have the space for 2 machines next to each other or on top of each other.
What is the best washer dryer combo (1 machine) in your opinion? (Fyi, I love my quick washes and have lots of delicate clothes.)
At the moment I’m thinking about Miele and AEG, but I’d love to hear about your experiences with washer/ dryers ✨
Check out the YouTube channel 'Ben's Appliances and Junk'. He provides a lot detail in his reviews with a lot of history thrown in there too.
Hello readers. My husband and I are closing our first home next month. We can finally have our own washer and dryer (in garage) and was hoping to get some ideas of what's best and what's not. I heard that Samsung should be avoided, but if you have one please tell me below how you like it. Also, what's the pros and cons of front/top loading or is it based on preference? Thank you all in advance
I posted this in another sub. We opted to make an "investment" and bought a SpeedQueen washer dryer set. (TR7003WN/DR7). Yes, a little pricey, but they have a 7-year full warranty. After having multiple issues and repairs with a Fridgaire set, the warranty was a welcome piece of mind. We are in year 4 of 7 and it's served our family well. I can't recommend these enough.
Just pay the money now. Save heartache later. After all, the post said "Best washer and dryer".
I love my speed Queen and I just love the steam sanitize feature especially with a puppy who's still learning about peeing outside.
Speed Queen is the best in my opinion but our Costco currently has Maytag top loaders on sale! Can’t beat the price.
Get the cheapest Costco LG that has direct drive. If you can hold off get them on the Labor Day sale.
Front loading is way more water efficient, and is a requirement for direct drive. Direct drive (as opposed to belt driven) is a much higher efficiency mechanism of spinning the washer drum. It wicks much more water out of your clothes so your dryer doesn’t have to work as hard, and is much more quiet than belt drive.
Washer WM4080HBA and matching dryer
LG top loaders are direct drive too.
Speed Queen
A nice top loading with agitator, no smart electronics speed queen.
Perhaps the absolute best washer and dryers made today. Top load washer, front load dryer.
I’m almost ready to pull the trigger on a Samsung washer and dryer set. What sucks about them?
See below. They certainly have all the bells and whistles, but as far as getting the job done without breaking, fuhgetaboutit. You'll spend more time and money keeping the Samsung appliance working than you would with any other brand.
Samsung is quite literally the worst appliances I have ever owned. Every single thing…TV, Fridge, Oven, dishwasher. Even more washer and dryer! They are a piece of shit from the beginning. I can’t stress it enough…never buy a Samsung!!! I’m typing this as I stand over my UNBALANCED washer with 1 towel in it. 😡😡😡
Can't repeat that enough. They're the most miserable appliances we've ever owned.
Getting ready to make an offer on our first house and we'll need to buy a washer and dryer if we get it. Just looking for some suggestions 😁
Here are the recommendations from TheWireCutter. You probably want an LG front load washer and matching dryer.
Here's their article about the Speed Queen meme washers. In short, they're good for landlords, but are about the worst possible washer for anyone else. They cost a lot to use in terms of water and energy, clean poorly, and are harsh on clothes.
Thank you very much for the Speed Queen article. I've been wondering for years if I should get a Speed Queen despite strongly desiring the space advantage of a stacked front loader. I will wonder no longer.
I wonder if you could shed any light on the LG "controversy"? They are highly recommended by some authorities, including WireCutter and (I think) Consumer Reports, but they have a terrible reputation in online forums (including comments on this post), and my repair guy strongly disrecommends them.
My house came with a Samsung washer and dryer which tend to have a higher failure rate. I can tell you that if no one in my house ever overloaded my laundry machines I would have never needed to do any repairs. But because my family loves to stuff laundry machines as full as they humanly can, I've had to do some fixes. In particular, the main drum bearing on my dryer wore out twice until I bought an upgraded aftermarket version that uses a metal ball bearing. In any case, it was pretty easy to open the machine and see the obvious broken bit, search the part number on Amazon, and buy a replacement (or upgraded after market version). Unfortunately when my Samsung washer died the problem seemed to be a burned out motor and there was no low-cost fix (the motor is much of the price of the washer). I really wanted to buy a non-Samsung machine...until I got to the store and the Samsung washers were on such deep discount it was stupid to buy anything else.
Consumer Reports thinks LG are the most reliable brand of washers. What if, for example, LG put a lot of care into making all the wear-related components like the bearings and such super durable, so they basically never wore out. That might mean that if a washer did have a problem, it would be in a component like the motor or control board that is difficult to economically replace. To a repair guy, that could mean "any time someone calls me with an LG washer problem I have to tell them to throw it away instead of replacing something simple, so LG must be junk" while at the same time meaning the average homeowner never has a problem that requires a repair guy.
Sometimes LG won't have parts available after a few years and can't be fixed, but the washers function well.
That said, if you like your clothing and want them cleaned gently and well, get a Miele set.
My Speed Queen has not increased my water consumption by any measurable amount (checked my records for the past five years). Same with my electricity.
I have not noticed any issue with cleanliness or harshness compared to past washers.
Anything under the Whirlpool umbrella (Maytag et al) are work horses. Aesthetically bland but mechanically bulletproof.
LG and Samsung are notoriously unreliable after their one year warranty expires.
FYI Kitchen Aid has 25% off for HCPs, vets, and first responders. Lead times were slow but it was a nice discount.
For reliability, Speed Queen. Unfortunately, they are all too large to fit in my laundry space, but they get top ratings for reliability consistently. They don't have all tye belts and whistles, but most people only need the basics.
Not Samsung
100% this. I bought a Samsung washer/dryer. The welding in the dryer drum is super cheap/crap done and the wheels to rotate them basically broke. Doing some research and they are well known for this.
Budget?
Hi! I don’t have time to do much research — so much information out there it’s overwhelming and I don’t know if much content is sponsored (I don’t trust youtubers really much). I need to purchase a washer dryer very soon. What are the best ones ? I like the tower/ stackable options because I feel like it would give me more space. But I’m open to regular dryer + washer if models are significantly better. Saw at Home Depot some AI/wifi fancy stuff, is this worth it? (I do about 5 laundries per week)
Thanks!
UPDATE: THANKS all for your feedback. I ended up getting this one : LG WashTower Single Unit ELECTRIC with Center Control 4.5 cu. ft. Front Load Washer and 7.4 cu. ft. Dryer with TurboSteam
Electrolux
Speed Queen
The answer is always Speed Queen.
I sold speed queen, and I agree,,, if you had a commercial laundromat, they would they run 24 hours a day what you would buy would be speed queen
Can't go wrong with Speed Queen.
My thoughts exactly. I love mine!
I’ve learned that Samsung and LG are both crap (thanks to this subreddit). But what brand is worth buying?
Miele has been fantastic.
I second that. Miele appliances are as solid as German tanks! My washer/dryer combo is 20+ years old and both work like on day one. Never had a problem. They are expensive initially but they’re worth every penny.
Edit: For what it’s worth, apparently Steve Jobs did quite a bit of research and ended up buying a Miele too. LOL
I bought a Speed Queen washer because, in addition to its durability, it can be repaired and the parts are readily available. I have heard, though, that their dryers aren’t as good.
My parents have speed queens they bought recently. The washer is great. The dryer does fuck all units in normal cycle which is hard on the clothes. Usually had to be run a few times. My mother loathes it.
My family lives and dies by Speed Queen.
Speed queen is highly recommended
Speed queen. There is no 2nd place.
What is the best washer dryer set to buy? Whirlpool? Ge? Lg?
With all things considered like price, repairability and just just straight up reliable
LG Frontloader for life!! Mine is still kicking after a decade. Speed queen a very close second.
Pro-tip: I also love this cheap little door prop to prevent mold/mildew
Maybe u lucked up and got a good one but the guy who fixes our Samsung dryer, he told us that Samsung and LG keep him in business.
Speed Queen for reliability, repairability. But they don't make pretty colors, front loaders or water-saving machines. They make old fashioned workhorse washers and dryers.
Speed Queen is definitely a really good option; I've had nothing but pleasant things to say about them. But, since I moved house recently and I needed something a bit more compact, I bought this LG WM3998HBA front-load washer and dryer combo unit. I was looking to make it a permanent replacement for the old Speed Queen that I still had in the other house, and it seems to be working well for me so far. The LG unit does have a large capacity, so it's pretty good for folks here who need to do laundry for the entire family at a time. Overall, the LG washer/dryer is pretty reliable, but if anything rears its head, I'll probably update it here.
This is my answer. 8 years of appliance repair. Speed Queen is the only washer and dryer worth buying.
Thank you so much...your reviews helped me want to buy a Speed Queen!!! Can you tell me...can the top loader wash a king comforter? I don't have a very puffy one. We have a Maytag right now and I didn't know that Whirlpool bought them...we have had problems with it spinning and had a tech come put a new part in it only 6 months ago and it is doing the same dang thing again!!! Pisses me off because if we knew Whirlpool made Maytag, I would of NEVER bought the Maytag a few years ago!!! We had problems with our Whirlpool all the time. I want a washer that's gonna last..sick of this crap with washers!!!
As others have stated, the LG frontloaders are "the bar" — they are the standard. Anything else can only be a comparison, as they are superior in all ways.
Agreed. Replacing a 17 year old front loading set from LG. Wouldn’t consider another front loader than LG. That said, Speed Queen is the best.
Is there a particular model of LG front loader that is better or worse?
100% agree. the LG frontloaders are the state of the art, affordable, and nothing else compares. I had to learn that the hard way.
LG front loaders
Speed Queen Classic Set has a promotion going now. $150 rebate
I know a lot of washer-dryer combos aren't the best, but I'm wondering if they've improved over the years. Are there any good ones out there that don’t take four hours to wash and dry, and actually dry clothes well? Thanks!
I got a f&p combo maybe four years ago.
I don’t use the drying function much as I wear lots of cotton and so try to use the line or racks inside as ironing shirts from the dryer sucks!
But when I do use it either as a full wash dry cycle or just to dry if things are damp, it does the job ok. I use dryer balls to help out.
It doesn’t produce that dryer smell that standalone dryers have, which I kind of miss!
If space is an issue, the combo will do the job for sure.
Not sure about Combos, but we just got a new Fisher & Paykal 10Kg front loader. Compared to our old one:
- WAY quieter.
- Way bigger tub.
- Has add an item while running feature.
- Does NOT do a "i'm finished" chime but then not let you open the door for 2 minutes...
Really impressed with it, didn't realise how bad the old one was...
I have a 8kg f&p front loader as well. Really impressed with it. Mine does let me open the door any time though.
I work for a company who repair whiteware, I wouldn't get a combo machine nor recommend them but that's just my 2 cents. If it is mainly due to space, is it possible to have your dryer up on the wall? Or if you have a F/L, you can get a stacking mat for the clothes dryer to go on top of it.
Thanks for the advice. Will definitely have a think about it
I’m waiting for a heat pump washer dryer combo.
We've got the Fisher and Paykel combo and absolutely love it. Takes 3 hours to wash and dry an average load. We didn't have a dryer before, so find it really handy when we need it.
I’ve got the same one & also love it
That's awesome.thanks
I know a lot of washer-dryer combos aren't the best, but I'm wondering if they've improved over the years. Are there any good ones out there that don’t take four hours to wash and dry, and actually dry clothes well? Thanks!
I'll go a bit against the tide. We got the Bosch series 6 one and are pretty happy with it. Once you get the hang of it generally get everything to dry fine. At worst after you've done a wash dry cycle you need to run it on dry for a bit longer. The caveat it's just two of us without kids and we kind of needed the space.
Wash takes “about an hour” heat pump dryer takes “about three hours” This is how two separate machines work. You’ll not better this with a combo.
The biggest catch with combos is that the dryer capacity is usually less than the wash. This means that often folks fill a wash and then get left with damp clothes. This isn’t the combos fault per se. In order to use them in sequence you can only do a half wash.
Combos are a great space saver BUT are a compromise by design. For houses that require a combo, they are only good for 1-2 person families. Anything bigger and you’re better off having a decent washer and using a clothes line / laundry rack with a dehumidifier.
2 person household we got a Samsung smart combo and I LOVE it, haven’t had any issues with washing and drying but they’re always going to take longer than seperate units, we’re used to it now but mostly use a wash cycle followed by a timed dry cycle which can be controlled on my phone.
Yeah nah they all take forever unfortunately. By nature of their design.
We have a Miele washer-dryer, originally for convenience and also space. Now around 3 years old.
I would not do this again. It works, and we went for Miele for the quality, but clothes, when dried as well, come out very very wrinkly, much more so than a normal dryer. I think it has to do with the method of drying. I don't usually bother with even thinking about ironing, but we have to iron now at least the shirts.
Thank you for the info
Hi, I'm moving into a new home and need a new washer and dryer set! I've been hearing about home appliances that break down in just a few years. I don't want that. I want something that will last or is known to last for a long time and can preferably handle large loads. Thank you!
Had a matching Amana set for over 10 years and beat the snot out of it. The washer and dryer finally started failing - could’ve repaired them, but decided to get LG top loaded and dryer set - I’m happy so far. I like having WiFi notification that they’re done washing/drying.
Speed Queen electro mechanic washer. No expensive electronics to screw you over. Built like a tank just like the Maytags were in the 1970s.
Amanda dryer for the same reason. Pretty much everything that usually goes bad is easily repairable and in view by just pulling off the back panel, even for a novice.
You're all set for at least 10 years.
Don't get anything Maytag, Whirlpool or Samsung. Look up technicians on youtube they'll give you the specs on why to avoid. I can't wait to get rid of our Maytag bravos XL's

I agree. My Whirlpool set I bought in 1997 is 28 years old. The only downside is my water bill. The county I live in has raised it's water rates almost every year for the last 5 or so years, so I wash with much more discretion than I used to do without much thought. I'm considering a clothes line for the summer months.
Our current washing machine is on the verge of dying, and we thought in getting one that is combined with a dryer. Getting a separate dryer is not an option due to lack of space, so it's either a combo or just a standard washing machine. I am afraid that a combo will break within the first two years, but maybe there's something that will last more than that?
Been using an LG washer/dryer combo machine (4.3 cu. ft.) for almost fifteen years. Live in an A-frame, so only room for one machine, would loose my bathroom window if using a stacker type unit. Only need 120V, hot/cold water (must have cold water, or the machine will not dry properly) and a drain. Have had to repair it three times so far; drain pump, first time was after about seven years, second was two years later (had bought a cheap pump), third was two years after that (small rock got past filter and bent pump shaft). I'm handy, so machine was easy to repair myself. It's been a great machine, but as others have said, you will need to adjust to how it's designed to work. I wash/dry most items (half loads, as the dry function only works with the drum half full), but usually only wash jeans (hang them dry). Average wash/dry time is about four hours (greatly depends on fabric weight). Set the machine for delay and when you (wake up/return from work/get home from errands), your clothes are finished. I clean the machine every month or so (built in cycle with about 1/4 cup bleach). So used to this combo machine now, not sure if I'll go back to individual machines when I buy a house with room for both. All this being said, this is used for two adults. Couldn't imagine having more than a family of four using this machine. Good luck!
I bought this exact machine about two years ago. It's just fantastic. I'm a person who forgets to move laundry, so being able to set it & forget it is a life-saver. I can't speak to the older ones, but ours is practically silent, and it plays a lovely little song when it's done. Ours also has a pretty wide variety of options, so you're not stuck with a "full" cycle every time (you can do dry only etc). On one occasion we had to move it and—while it was hefty—my wife and I could do it ourselves.
Can you get washer/dryer that stack? Never heard of a good combo really. Jack of all trades and such.
Miele. Got one for 10 years - still going strong.
Miele - anything by Miele is built to last a lifetime. A bit expensive, but will almost always last a very long time!
I wouldn’t worry about lasting less time time than other machines. The experience is what is lacking. It just takes so long it isn’t worth the trouble to dry. Just get a smaller stack.
Can confirm. Had one in Japan and it took pretty much all day to dry a load.
First, I don't think appliances are buy-it-for-life items anymore. They're just not engineered for durability.
Second, I think washer/dryer combos can be a good solution for tight spaces—you just have to understand that you'll be doing laundry differently.
For example, you can't wash a full load of say, jeans, and expect to dry that full load.
I've had a decent experience with LG combo washer/dryers. We bought our first one while living in a tiny apartment in Paris. Had it 5 years with no problems. We also bought a combo for our Chicago condo. The first one was used by our renters, and it lasted a little over a year. I suspect it broke because the tenants didn't use it properly. We replaced the broken unit with a new LG unit, and that's been working without a problem for two years.

Key Considerations for Choosing the Best Washer Dryer:
Type: Decide between a washer-dryer combo (all-in-one unit) or separate washer and dryer units. Combos save space but may have longer drying times.
Capacity: Look for a washer dryer with sufficient capacity for your household needs. Typical capacities range from 4.5 to 5.5 cubic feet for washers and 7 to 9 cubic feet for dryers.
Energy Efficiency: Check for Energy Star ratings to ensure you're choosing an energy-efficient model, which can save you money on utility bills.
Wash and Dry Cycles: Consider the variety of wash and dry cycles available. Look for options like steam cleaning, quick wash, and specialized cycles for different fabric types.
Noise Level: If noise is a concern, look for models with noise-reduction features or those specifically designed to operate quietly.
Smart Features: Some modern washer dryers come with smart technology, allowing you to control and monitor cycles via a smartphone app.
Recommendations:
LG WM3998HSV: This washer-dryer combo is highly rated for its efficiency, large capacity (4.5 cu. ft.), and variety of wash/dry cycles. It also features smart technology for remote monitoring.
Samsung WF45R6100AW & DVE45R6100C: If you prefer separate units, this pair is known for its excellent performance, energy efficiency, and user-friendly features. The washer has a 4.5 cu. ft. capacity, while the dryer offers 7.5 cu. ft.
Whirlpool WFC8090GX: Another great combo option, this model is compact, efficient, and offers a good range of cycles, making it ideal for smaller spaces.
Choosing the right washer dryer depends on your specific needs, space, and budget, so consider these factors carefully!
